The Marine League lowdown

| | Comments (0) |

The Banning boys soccer team secured its spot atop the Marine League standings when it won at San Pedro on Wednesday, 4-2. But first-place Banning is just one game ahead of Narbonne, which most likely has to win at San Pedro on Friday night to stay in the title hunt. If both Banning and Narbonne keep pace, they will play for the Marine League championship next Friday at Banning.
Gardena and San Pedro are tied in third place. Gardena has been the better team overall and could be the frontrunner to take the third slot. The two teams meet next Friday in the regular-season finale for both squads.
Look below at the Marine League standings, which start with the overall records then follow with the league records for each team.

1. Banning 9-2, 6-1
2. Narbonne 10-2-2, 5-2
3. Gardena 12-4-2, 4-3
4. San Pedro 7-9-1, 4-3
5. Carson 6-10-1, 2-5
6. Washington 0-7 in league

The Bay League lowdown

| | Comments (0) |

The Palos Verdes boys soccer team created a little bit of separation when it beat West Torrance on Wednesday night, 2-1, at West High. If Palos Verdes takes care of business on Friday against Hill rival Peninsula, which is winless in league play, it should all but have the league title wrapped up.
Palos Verdes appears to have everything but a legitimate striker, but still might be the best team in the South Bay.
The battle for second and third place intensifies with West, Mira Costa and Leuzinger all in the hunt and Redondo not far behind. If Mira Costa's game at Leuzinger on Friday night produces a winner, the loser will have an uphill battle making the playoffs.
Fifth-place Redondo is no slouch, and could play a spoiler role down the stretch with three league games remaining before the playoffs.
Palos Verdes is the only Bay League team ranked in CIF Southern Section's Division I at No. 6.
Look below at the Bay League standings, which start with the overall records then follow with the league records for each team.

1. Palos Verdes   17-3-3, 5-1-1 (16 points)
2. West Torrance  10-6-5, 4-3   (12 points)
3. Mira Costa       10-3-4, 3-2-2 (11 points)
4. Leuzinger          8-5-3, 3-3-1 (10 points)
5. Redondo           5-8-5, 2-3-2  (8 points)
6. Peninsula         2-11-3, 0-5-2 (2 points)

The Pioneer League lowdown

| | Comments (0) |

The North Torrance boys soccer team has the  Pioneer League all but wrapped up for the fourth straight year, and can clinch the title on Friday when it hosts Lawndale. North's speed gives everyone fits.
South   Torrance, which may be playing the best soccer in the Pioneer League right now, sits firmly in second place while El Segundo and Lawndale are in a  tight race for the third automatic CIF Southern Section playoff spot out of the Pioneer League.
Torrance and Centennial are down and appear out of the playoff race.
The Pioneer League is not getting a lot of respect from the CIF Southern Section, as it has no teams ranked in Division IV, not even North, which  reached the semifinals last year.
Look below at the Pioneer League standings, which start with the overall records then follow with league records for each team.

1. North Torrance 10-4-6, 6-0-1 (19 points)
2. South Torrance 8-6-5, 4-1-2  (14 points)
3. El Segundo      5-8-3, 3-3-1  (10 points)
4. Lawndale         9-9-2, 2-3-2  (8 points)
5. Torrance          6-11-4, 1-4-2 (5 points)
6.  Centennial      2-10-1, 1-6 (3 points)

Lee signs with USC; Onwuasor chooses Arizona

With the cameras rolling, Serra receiver and defensive back Marqise Lee delivered his big announcement on where he will play his college football.

"I'm staying in my backyard. I'm going to USC," Lee told Fox Sports News Wednesday on National Signing Day, pulling the USC cap on his head over the Oregon and Miami caps.

Lee rejoins former Serra teammate Robert Woods at USC and will attend with Serra receiver George Farmer, who had committed to the Trojans in November.

All three are close friends, and the trio won a CIF and state title last season during Lee's junior campaign..

"It's going to be amazing," Lee said of reuniting with his teammates. "I enjoyed playing with them my sophomore and junior year. To play with them another time is going to be great."

Lee said Woods and Farmer didn't put too much pressure on him.

"They didn't bother as much because they went through the process. They knew how tough it was," Lee said.

Lee made his announcement with five family members standing behind him.

Lee has shown a propensity to score on either side of the ball, playing defensive back almost exclusively as a junior before stepping up for Woods on offense this past season. Lee is also a lockdown defender in basketball with a remarkable jumping ability.

"I'll probably play offense, but if I have to play defense, I will," Lee said. "Whatever gets me on the field quicker. I'm comfortable with offense or defense. It doesn't matter to me.

While Inglewood linebacker Jaswha James had firmly committed to Oregon State, Inglewood receiver Patrick Onwuasor entered the school library for their signing ceremony a bit conflicted.

Onwusaor wore a University of Arizona T-shirt, a University of Miami cap and had an Arizona State cap attached to his belt.

Then he made it official in front of the cameras.

"Patrick Onwuasor, University of Arizona," Onwuasor said, trading his Miami hat for an Arizona cap.

Onwuasor sifted through 21 offers during a dizzying process, including Miami, Arizona State, Nebraska, Washington, USC, Utah and Boise State. Onwuasor said there were endless texts, phone calls and emails.

"At first, this was fun, then it got heavy," Onwuasor said. "I prayed over it with my family and my coaches. Coach Thomas, Coach Ali and Coach Bass helped me through it."

Onwuasor had taken trips to Nebraska, Arizona, Hawaii, Miami and Arizona State. Onwuasor took his Miami trip with Lee, Farmer, Moala and former Narbonne and Harbor College star Byron Moore.

Onwuasor liked that Arizona offered him a chance to play receiver.

"Compared to other schools, Miami is on a chart by itself," Onwusaor said of the recruiting trip. "But I really liked Coach Stoops and Coach Nichols at Arizona. Coach Nicholas and I had a great connection. I feel it's the best fit for me."
