1. Palos Verdes (15-1-3 overall, 2-0 in Bay League): Fifteen different players have scored for Sea Kings, and none of them are named Michael Meissner, the returning Bay League MVP who has battled injuries. Meissner is back on the field and slowly rounding into form. Last game: Beat West Torrance 3-2. Next game: Tuesday at Peninsula.

2. Leuzinger (13-5-1 overall, 1-1 in Bay League): Olympians survived against Peninsula without explosive striker Sebastian Cortez (red card previous game). Now he's back and rearing to go. Last game: Beat Peninsula 1-0. Next  game: Hosting Mira Costa on Tuesday.

3. West Torrance (10-2-3 overall, 0-1-1 in Bay League): Warriors off to slow start in league, but there's no reason they won't finish strong as usual, is  there? Last game: Lost to Palos Verdes 3-2. Next game: Hosting Redondo on Tuesday.

4. Narbonne (7-4-4 overall, 1-0-1 in Marine League): Very talented and appear well-tuned at times. We may not have  seen their best yet. Last game: Tied San Pedro 1-1. Friday: at Banning.

5. Banning (6-3-1 overall, 2-0 in  Marine League): Star Peter Velazquez trying to play with a banged-up ankle. Pilots will need him to keep up with Gauchos. Last game: Beat Washington 13-0. Friday: Hosting Narbonne.

6. North Torrance (8-6-2 overall, 0-1-1 in Pioneer League): Hard to believe four-time defending league champion Saxons winless after two league games. Look for the trend to change. Last game: Tied  South Torrance 1-1.  Next game: Hosting Lawndale on Wednesday.

7. South Torrance (7-5-3 overall, 1-0-1 in Pioneer League): Skilled players need to stay healthy for South, which is looking to dethrone North Torrance. Last game: Tied North 1-1. Next game:   Hosting Centennial on Wednesday.

8. Redondo (6-4-2 overall, 2-0 in Bay League): Young  club players starting to mesh for Sea Hawks, who jumped out to quick start in Bay League. Last game: Beat Mira Costa 3-1. Next game: At West Torrance on Tuesday.

9. Mira Costa (6-5-6 overall, 0-1-1 in Bay League): Mustangs are solid but looking for a consistent scorer or  two before it's too late. Last game: Lost to Redondo 3-1. Next game: At Leuzinger on Tuesday night.

10. Lawndale (6-3-5 overall, 0-0-2 in Pioneer  League). Cardinals can play most  teams tight and could end up with a lot of ties. They boast a couple of quality wins as well. Last game: Tied Torrance 0-0. Next game: At North Torrance on Wednesday.

Honorable Mention: Peninsula (6-7-3 overall, 0-2 in Bay League); Animo (7-8-2 overall, 2-0 in Coastal League); Morningside (4-4-1 overall, 1-1 in Ocean League).

Tony Ciniglio

Tony Ciniglio has been covering sports at the Daily Breeze since 1997 and is the Prep-JC Editor. Ciniglio graduated from Malibu High (home of the mighty Sharks) in 1997 as part of the school's second graduating class before attending powerhouse Pepperdine (Class of 2001), thus shattering any reader's preconceived notion that he has any personal bias when it comes to South Bay Preps.

Dave Thorpe

Dave Thorpe was a self-proclaimed, slightly above average baseball player back in the day at Torrance's West High, who went on and had an unspectacular, injury-riddled stint as a third baseman at El Camino College. Trading bat for pen, Thorpe wrote sports for the Long Beach Union newspaper at Long Beach State University, then worked as the sports editor for the Palos Verdes Peninsula News for seven years before climbing down the Hill to the Daily Breeze, where he has been a sports writer covering local sports since 2007.
