Carson's quest for a third consecutive trip to the L.A. City Section final is now in the hands of Jimmy Nolan.

Carson principal Wendy Warren confirmed to The Daily Breeze Friday night that the school has hired Nolan as its new football coach.

Nolan replaces Elijah Asante, who left for St. Paul after back-to-back L.A. City Section Final appearances.

Nolan spent the last two years at Compton Centennial, where he went 14-10 and spearheaded a number of ambitious fundraising efforts to help raise money for pads, uniforms and other football-related equipment.

"We felt he had a vision for the whole piece, a very clear and specific vision," Warren said. "We liked his game strategies, his ideas for reaching out to the students and developing a sense of family and community,"

"We were impressed with his big picture package."

Warren also said Nolan came highly recommended by Centennial's principal.

"They were sad to lose him, but were full of compliments about him," Warren said. "One of the most important things was did he work well with the school, did the community embrace and welcome him? And the students loved him. That speaks louder to me than anything else."

Check The Daily Breeze tomorrow for a more in-depth look at Carson's new coach.

Tony Ciniglio

Tony Ciniglio has been covering sports at the Daily Breeze since 1997 and is the Prep-JC Editor. Ciniglio graduated from Malibu High (home of the mighty Sharks) in 1997 as part of the school's second graduating class before attending powerhouse Pepperdine (Class of 2001), thus shattering any reader's preconceived notion that he has any personal bias when it comes to South Bay Preps.

Dave Thorpe

Dave Thorpe was a self-proclaimed, slightly above average baseball player back in the day at Torrance's West High, who went on and had an unspectacular, injury-riddled stint as a third baseman at El Camino College. Trading bat for pen, Thorpe wrote sports for the Long Beach Union newspaper at Long Beach State University, then worked as the sports editor for the Palos Verdes Peninsula News for seven years before climbing down the Hill to the Daily Breeze, where he has been a sports writer covering local sports since 2007.
