Marine League Standings

1. Banning (11-4-1, 7-1)
2. Narbonne  (11-6-4, 5-2-1)
3. Gardena (8-10-1, 5-3)
4. Carson (3-7-1, 3-4-1)
5. San Pedro (5-9-4, 2-4-2)
6. Washington (0-8 in league)

Notes: The biggest game left is Banning at Narbonne on Wednesday afternoon. Narbonne needs a win to have a chance at first and keep Gardena off its  tail. Narbonne is on a hot streak at home and Banning star Peter Velazquez's availability (ankle injury) is a question mark. Banning finishes at  Gardena on Friday in another dangerous game. Carson and San  Pedro are fighting for fourth place and a possible playoff berth. The L.A. City Section usually  takes three to four Marine League  teams. Fourth place may or may not be good enough.

STANDINGS

1. Leuzinger (18-5-1, 6-1), at Mira Costa, Friday, 3 p.m.
2. Palos Verdes (19-2-3, 6-1), hosts Peninsula, Friday, 3 p.m.
3. West Torrance (12-4-4, 2-3-2), at Redondo, Friday, 3 p.m.
4. Mira Costa (8-7-7, 2-3-2)
5. Redondo (6-9-2, 2-5)
6. Peninsula (7-10-2, 1-6)

Notes: Who will blink first between the Sea Kings and the Olympians with three regular-season games left? A tie could be enough for one of them to slip out of first place, and no team in the Bay League is an easy opponent ... Either Redondo or Peninsula could play spoiler ...  Leuzinger gets a big test on Friday at Mira Costa ... Leuzinger slipped past Mira Costa in overtime in the first meeting ... Palos Verdes looking to capture back-to-back Bay  League titles ... West and Mira Costa in a tight race for third place ...

Boys Soccer Top 10

| | Comments (0) |

1. Palos Verdes (15-1-3 overall, 2-0 in Bay League): Fifteen different players have scored for Sea Kings, and none of them are named Michael Meissner, the returning Bay League MVP who has battled injuries. Meissner is back on the field and slowly rounding into form. Last game: Beat West Torrance 3-2. Next game: Tuesday at Peninsula.

2. Leuzinger (13-5-1 overall, 1-1 in Bay League): Olympians survived against Peninsula without explosive striker Sebastian Cortez (red card previous game). Now he's back and rearing to go. Last game: Beat Peninsula 1-0. Next  game: Hosting Mira Costa on Tuesday.

3. West Torrance (10-2-3 overall, 0-1-1 in Bay League): Warriors off to slow start in league, but there's no reason they won't finish strong as usual, is  there? Last game: Lost to Palos Verdes 3-2. Next game: Hosting Redondo on Tuesday.

4. Narbonne (7-4-4 overall, 1-0-1 in Marine League): Very talented and appear well-tuned at times. We may not have  seen their best yet. Last game: Tied San Pedro 1-1. Friday: at Banning.

5. Banning (6-3-1 overall, 2-0 in  Marine League): Star Peter Velazquez trying to play with a banged-up ankle. Pilots will need him to keep up with Gauchos. Last game: Beat Washington 13-0. Friday: Hosting Narbonne.

6. North Torrance (8-6-2 overall, 0-1-1 in Pioneer League): Hard to believe four-time defending league champion Saxons winless after two league games. Look for the trend to change. Last game: Tied  South Torrance 1-1.  Next game: Hosting Lawndale on Wednesday.

7. South Torrance (7-5-3 overall, 1-0-1 in Pioneer League): Skilled players need to stay healthy for South, which is looking to dethrone North Torrance. Last game: Tied North 1-1. Next game:   Hosting Centennial on Wednesday.

8. Redondo (6-4-2 overall, 2-0 in Bay League): Young  club players starting to mesh for Sea Hawks, who jumped out to quick start in Bay League. Last game: Beat Mira Costa 3-1. Next game: At West Torrance on Tuesday.

9. Mira Costa (6-5-6 overall, 0-1-1 in Bay League): Mustangs are solid but looking for a consistent scorer or  two before it's too late. Last game: Lost to Redondo 3-1. Next game: At Leuzinger on Tuesday night.

10. Lawndale (6-3-5 overall, 0-0-2 in Pioneer  League). Cardinals can play most  teams tight and could end up with a lot of ties. They boast a couple of quality wins as well. Last game: Tied Torrance 0-0. Next game: At North Torrance on Wednesday.

Honorable Mention: Peninsula (6-7-3 overall, 0-2 in Bay League); Animo (7-8-2 overall, 2-0 in Coastal League); Morningside (4-4-1 overall, 1-1 in Ocean League).

Perspective on Marqise Lee's honor

| | Comments (0) |

Many of you likely saw the weekend story about recent Serra graduate Marqise Lee being named Cal-Hi Sports' Boys State Athlete of the Year.

http://www.dailybreeze.com/preps/ci_18588902

Columnist Mike Waldner also touched on Lee in a column this morning about Lee and his former Serra/current USC teammates George Farmer and Robert Woods.

http://www.dailybreeze.com/ci_18606191

To put in perspective the elite list Lee just joined (and Woods joined the year before), here's the all-time Cal-Hi list, which includes retroactive selections for athletes before the 1978-79 school year.

El Segundo's Scott McGregor is also on there, but so are the likes of Jackie Robinson, Ted Williams, John Elway, Jason Kidd, Mark Spitz, Greg Louganis, Darryl Strawberry and C.C. Sabathia among a host of others.  Any way you slice it, some pretty elite company for a pair of Cavaliers who appear to have bright futures at USC and beyond.

The Marine League lowdown

| | Comments (0) |

The Banning boys soccer team secured its spot atop the Marine League standings when it won at San Pedro on Wednesday, 4-2. But first-place Banning is just one game ahead of Narbonne, which most likely has to win at San Pedro on Friday night to stay in the title hunt. If both Banning and Narbonne keep pace, they will play for the Marine League championship next Friday at Banning.
Gardena and San Pedro are tied in third place. Gardena has been the better team overall and could be the frontrunner to take the third slot. The two teams meet next Friday in the regular-season finale for both squads.
Look below at the Marine League standings, which start with the overall records then follow with the league records for each team.

1. Banning 9-2, 6-1
2. Narbonne 10-2-2, 5-2
3. Gardena 12-4-2, 4-3
4. San Pedro 7-9-1, 4-3
5. Carson 6-10-1, 2-5
6. Washington 0-7 in league

Friday's Marine League schedule
Narbonne at San Pedro
Carson at Gardena
Banning at Washington
