San Pedro Girls Volleyball team unhappy with playoff seeding

| | Comments (0) |
San Pedro's girls volleyball is once again in the L.A. City Section Volleyball playoffs, but for Coach Kyle Ross, there isn't much to be thrilled about.

When the Division I seeding was announced last week, San Pedro (7-7, 7-5) drew the No. 15 seed and an unenviable first round trip tonight at 7 p.m. to No. 2 seed Granada Hills.

Ross was unhappy with San Pedro's seeding.

"I don't understand the whole seeding thing, it's obvious they want us to get knocked out in the first round," Ross said. "I don't understand why the CIF doesn't step in and do something to make this more fair for the kids."

Ross pointed to the fact that San Pedro finished third in the Marine League behind Narbonne and Carson while Cleveland (9-12, 2-6), which took fifth place in a West Valley League that also includes El Camino Real and Granada Hills, the top two seeds, earned the No. 6 seed, ahead of both Carson and San Pedro.

"None of this makes sense to me," Ross said. "It seems like the Valley pretty much controls the seeding. How does a fifth place team get a higher seed than second place Carson? How do they get a higher seed than us?"

Ross said he planned to fire off letters to the appropriate parties within the City section expressing his displeasure with the current seeding system.

"The way it looks, it's set up to be El Camino Real and Granada Hills in the Finals," Ross said. "Now what's the fun in that when they play each other twice a year?"

Don't expect the unrest over seeding issues to effect the Pirates on the court. Ross said his squad is more than ready for tonight's tough test.

"They obviously want us to get knocked out in the first round, but we're going to have some fun with it," Ross said. "We have a great team and we're going to practice and play as hard as we can and try to get some respect for the Marine League."

What to Watch for Tonight in South Bay Prep Sports

| | Comments (0) |
Tonight should be a big night for the Bay League in a variety of sports, starting with girls volleyball where Mira Costa and Redondo will renew their rivalry tonight at 7 p.m. at Mira Costa. Redondo finally got over the hump with a league title last season, but expect the Mustangs to be out for revenge. With both teams off to a 3-0 start in league play this will go a long way toward deciding the league champion.

There's also a couple of huge tilts taking place on the Hill - Peninsula's girls volleyball team playing at Palos Verdes and Peninsula's girls tennis team playing host Palos Verdes in a key league showdown.

Heading over to the pool, Mira Costa will be out for payback when it travels to Peninsula for a 3 p.m. Bay League water polo clash. You may remember that Peninsula topped Mira Costa for the first time in at least the last eight years just a couple of weeks ago to capture the South Bay Tournament championship.

South Bay Volleyball powers look strong early

| | Comments (0) |
It's been a stellar first week for some of the South Bay's traditional volleyball powers.

As you may have read in Friday's newspaper, Redondo got off on the right foot with a 25-20, 25-21, 25-16 win over Havard-Westlake. With Skylar Dykstra moving into a starring role as Redondo's top hitter, the Sea Hawks look primed for a big season. She finished Thursday's match with 12 kills and six aces.

Mira Costa on the other hand, didn't win it's season opening game, but that wasn't a big problem for Coach Lisa Zimmerman.

Although the Mustangs couldn't hang onto an early lead in a season-opening 23-25, 30-32, 25-12, 25-20, 15-13 loss Thursday at Edison, Zimmerman was more than pleased with what she saw, especially without key players like Maddy Klineman and Lan Nguyen sitting out.

To make up for the absences, setter Corie Bain stepped in as a hitter for the first time in her career and was dominant, finishing with  32 assists, 25 digs, 11 kills, three blocks, two aces.

"Corie is awesome and that's just the kind of player she is," Zimmerman said. "She'll do whatever you need her to do and she can do it all. She was big for us."

Edison came into the match ranked No. 4 in CIF-SS Division I while Mira Costa entered ranked No. 8.

Meanwhile, three-time defending Pioneer League champ South Torrance (3-0) is off and rolling early after a 25-19, 25-23, 25-20 win over La Canada in the semifinals of the Gahr Tournament. The Spartans get a big test Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the tournament final against Los Alamitos.

"We've been playing in (the Gahr Tournament) every year since it started and this is our first time reaching the finals," South Coach Robert Kutsch said. "So we like how we're playing right now but Los Alamitos will really show us where we're at."

Perspective on Marqise Lee's honor

| | Comments (0) |

Many of you likely saw the weekend story about recent Serra graduate Marqise Lee being named Cal-Hi Sports' Boys State Athlete of the Year.

http://www.dailybreeze.com/preps/ci_18588902

Columnist Mike Waldner also touched on Lee in a column this morning about Lee and his former Serra/current USC teammates George Farmer and Robert Woods.

http://www.dailybreeze.com/ci_18606191

To put in perspective the elite list Lee just joined (and Woods joined the year before), here's the all-time Cal-Hi list, which includes retroactive selections for athletes before the 1978-79 school year.

Perfect Storm for Chadwick Volleyball

| | Comments (0) |
The Chadwick girls volleyball team had a breakthrough home victory earlier this season when it took down Prep League foe Mayfield, which was ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division III-AA at the time.
Chadwick, now ranked first in Division III-AA, proved it was no fluke when it won at Mayfield, now ranked third, on Tuesday night in four games.
With Val Geiger and Corinne Hemmersbach leading the charge, Chadwick remains undefeated this season and is hitting on all cylinders.
"We're putting away balls and not letting many balls drop," Chadwick coach  Michael Cass said. "I think it's just a great group of girls who get along and are playing at a high level."
Will Chadwick be able to sustain this level of excellence?
"It's kind of the perfect storm at this moment," Cass said. "Hopefully the girls can sustain it through the playoffs."

Chadwick's breakthrough

| | Comments (0) |
The Chadwick girls volleyball team hadn't beaten Prep League powerhouse Mayfield in a while when it finally broke through on Thursday night -- and with a sweep no less. Host Chadwick's 28-26, 25-12, 25-22 win may announce a shift of power in the Prep League. Going into the match, Mayfield was ranked first in CIF Southern Section's Division III-AA and Chadwick third. Those rankings will most likely change next week.
Mayfield has won three straight CIF titles.
"It was great for the girls to get the win and know they can take on anyone in the division," Chadwick coach Mike Cass said.
And the keys to the breakthrough win for Chadwick?
"We minimized our errors and stayed more composed than in other matches," Cass said. "It's dawning on them that they are a good team. If they just go out and play hard the right things will happen."
Abbe Holtz had 11 kills, Zoe Hamilton had nine kils, Lizzie Yates had 27 digs, Corinne Hemmersbach had 17 assists and 12 digs and Sarah Lucinti had eight assists and five aces to help Chadwick's cause.

Rainouts/power outage

Due to the heavy rainstorms in the Torrance area, the Daily Breeze suffered a power outage that knocked out electricity and phone service to its building for much of Friday night. The Breeze apologizes to those coaches and scorekeepers who were trying to call in their game scores. We appreciate your patience in this situation. We tried to reach as many of you directly as we could.

Rainouts
Coaches and administrators, if your school had a competition rained out Friday, please inform us about the rescheduled date at sports@dailybreeze.com.
