What to Watch for Tonight in South Bay Prep Sports

| | Comments (0) |
Tonight should be a big night for the Bay League in a variety of sports, starting with girls volleyball where Mira Costa and Redondo will renew their rivalry tonight at 7 p.m. at Mira Costa. Redondo finally got over the hump with a league title last season, but expect the Mustangs to be out for revenge. With both teams off to a 3-0 start in league play this will go a long way toward deciding the league champion.

There's also a couple of huge tilts taking place on the Hill - Peninsula's girls volleyball team playing at Palos Verdes and Peninsula's girls tennis team playing host Palos Verdes in a key league showdown.

Heading over to the pool, Mira Costa will be out for payback when it travels to Peninsula for a 3 p.m. Bay League water polo clash. You may remember that Peninsula topped Mira Costa for the first time in at least the last eight years just a couple of weeks ago to capture the South Bay Tournament championship.

DAILY BREEZE BOYS WATER POLO TOP 5

1. Palos Verdes (10-2): Senior Charlie McBee was the hero in PV's 8-7 win over Mira Costa -- James Robinson, Erik Najarian and goalkeeper Alek Ruzic are among the others who make the Sea Kings No. 1 in the pool.
2. Peninsula (11-3): Panthers feature a balanced attack led by Charlie Wood, Connor Ryan and Jim Blackwood and boast an experienced and savvy netminder in senior Nick Lopez.
3. Mira Costa (6-8): Matt Thornton leads a stellar defense for the Mustangs, who must find guys who can score in crunch time.
4. Chadwick (11-4): The Blake Range & Matty Gallas Show has received contributions from its supporting cast lately, which will come in handy against top teams.
5. El Segundo (6-7): Evan Peterson is the main man for the Eagles -- Oscar Chen and Parker Blacksten are among the others looking to become legitimate offensive threats to help him out.

Tony Ciniglio

Tony Ciniglio has been covering sports at the Daily Breeze since 1997 and is the Prep-JC Editor. Ciniglio graduated from Malibu High (home of the mighty Sharks) in 1997 as part of the school's second graduating class before attending powerhouse Pepperdine (Class of 2001), thus shattering any reader's preconceived notion that he has any personal bias when it comes to South Bay Preps.

Dave Thorpe

Dave Thorpe was a self-proclaimed, slightly above average baseball player back in the day at Torrance's West High, who went on and had an unspectacular, injury-riddled stint as a third baseman at El Camino College. Trading bat for pen, Thorpe wrote sports for the Long Beach Union newspaper at Long Beach State University, then worked as the sports editor for the Palos Verdes Peninsula News for seven years before climbing down the Hill to the Daily Breeze, where he has been a sports writer covering local sports since 2007.
