Our Spanish-language blog

In our effort to cover sports in a lot of different ways, we've added a 14th sports blog at dailynews.com.

The difference in this one will be obvious right away: It's written in Spanish.

Take a shortcut to the new blog, Deportes Daily News, by clicking here.

The blogger is Alonso Tacanga, a 23-year-old journalism student at Cal State Northridge who writes for the campus newspaper, the Daily Sundial, and the university's monthly Spanish-language publication, El Nuevo Sol. Alonso did a nice job covering the Matadors' men's basketball team this year -- in English -- for the Sundial.

Alonso has been busy keeping up with all the news about the Lakers, since Deportes Daily News debuted on the day of game 1 of the NBA Finals. He posted 10 times that first night.

At the same time, the Daily News achieved what might be a "first" for the newspaper by translating one feature of our game 1 coverage into Spanish. The game-at-a-glance box published in our four-page Lakers special section Friday morning was a Spanish version of the box that appeared on page A-1.

The translated feature in the newspaper was the idea of Daily News Editor in Chief Carolina Garcia. The Spanish-language blog was my idea.

"The Lakers are the hottest thing in town, and readers want to rally behind the team," Garcia says. "We want to give our Hispanic community some of the excitement from the games, and adding a Spanish-language blog on the Lakers is a great way to reach a Spanish-reading audience. We're an incredibly dynamic and changing Valley and an even more diverse metropolitan area. The Daily News wants to reflect that change and growth."

We expect that after the Lakers-Celtics series is over, Deportes Daily News will branch out and write about all of the biggest sports news, adding a fresh voice to L.A.'s multifaceted sports community.
