Flag poll: 1 for the Dodgers
I just saw a Dodgers car flag for the first time this season -- maybe ever. We associate car flags with Lakers championship runs. Which brings up a subplot of this Dodgers surge.
It has been so long since the Dodgers have gone even this far, and both the Dodgers brand and Los Angeles have changed so much, it's hard to know what form the city's excitement might take if they beat Philadelphia and move on to the World Series.
Would the Dodgers be as cool as the Lakers are when they're winning? Could the Dodgers reclaim from the Lakers the crown of L.A.'s essential pro sports franchise? It's been just as long since both teams were good at once -- 20 years, since L.A. won the baseball and basketball titles in the same year, the Lakers behind Magic Johnson and Big Game James, the Dodgers behind magical Gibson and big-game Orel.

Kevin Modesti watches sports from a new angle since his promotion from sports columnist to sports editor for the Los Angeles Newspaper Group. In his new blog, Modesti not only comments on the big sports stories of the moment-- he talks about what makes them big. Think of it as a conversation with readers about how these stories should be covered.
