Megaman Legends 3 Canceled

A message posted to Megaman Legends 3′s Developer Room site has confirmed the worst: Megaman won’t be returning to his RPG-lite series on the 3DS.

The project had elicited the help of fans in designing a new character for the game as well as a new robot enemy through contests designed to bring fans closer to the production of the title.

Regular updates were made by the staff within a “Developer Room” site at Capcom’s Japanese and North American sites, fielding questions and keeping everyone updated on the project. It was a rare level of transparency that Platinum Games’ had also engaged fans with through blog entries following the development of games such as Bayonetta.

When Keiji Inafune had left Capcom shortly after Capcom had revealed their Megaman Legends 3 project for the Nintendo 3DS, fans were understandably worried over whether the project would survive without him.

It was already a huge surprise to many considering that the last Legends game, Mega Man Legends 2, came out in 2000. The Mega Man godfather had even mentioned interest in doing a follow-up to Legends 2 in an interview with Gamespot in 2007.

Capcom did their best to assure everyone that the the game wouldn’t be impacted by Inafune’s departure, though it’s hard not to think about the kind of influence one-time series producer could have brought to the game. Yet the collection of blog postings and updates at Capcom’s Developer Room had shown that the team behind the game was working to make it a worthy successor to the series that Inafune had started.

And now, it looks like we’ll never know how it could have turned out at all.

Capcom wants you to make a mecha for Mega Man

Or rather, a Bonne Mecha! The Bonnes are a family in the Mega Man Legend RPG series who specialize in building special robots that perform a variety of different tasks. This time, Capcom’s devs are reaching out again to their fans to see who can make a “Bonne Mech” to feature in the new Mega Man Legends 3 title they’re working on for the Nintendo DS.

It’s been quite a few years since the last Mega Man Legends game had come out – on the PS1. While it seems aimed at older fans that remember the games on the PS1, putting it on the DS will also re-introduce this little slice of Mega Man’s RPG world to a new generation. It’s slated to come out sometime in 2011.

This contest follows a previous one where the devs had asked fans to design a heroine for the game. To help inspire budding mech designers, they’ve provided some material to go over to help spur imaginations at their official developers blog. You can’t submit new ideas yet, but they’ll let everyone know when the floodgates are open. Who knows? The mech that players cry over for being the toughest thing they’ve ever fought might just be yours. How’s that for lasting fame?

Your world. MEGAFIED.

The retro risks that Capcom had taken with Mega Man as downloadable games on both Live and the Playstation Store seem to have paid off as the Blue Bomber is coming back for another adventure. But hints from the trailer below, created through a collaboration between iam8bit and Buddy System Studios, seem to indicate that he won’t be alone. Either that, or he’ll be inheriting some new powers with Capcom’s history serving as the source for each one.

The implications are pretty huge, but I’ll just let you enjoy the trailer instead and make your own guesses as to what Mega Man Universe is going to bring to your world when it arrives. And in keeping with the retro fever that Mega Man is sweating under, the trailer uses stop motion animation with a few effects thrown in, to give this presentation the feel of an old-school commercial. Can’t wait to hear more on what Capcom has planned for this one!
