Review: NBA 2K12

NBA 2K12 is a testament, in video game form, to America's love of professional basketball. Perhaps more than any other sports video game*, 2K Sports' latest offering shows a respect and love for its source material that most other titles do not match.

And given the labor troubles afflicting the NBA this season, NBA 2K12 may be the only way basketball fans will be able to enjoy the professional game for a long time. That makes it a little harder to decide if NBA 2K12 is a "must buy" for the fan and his or her hard-earned $60.

On the "pro" side, NBA 2K12 offers a quality single-player experience and by featuring a dozens of NBA legends in its "NBA's Greatest" mode, 2K Sports offers a worthy successor to 2K11's "Jordan Challenge" feature and thus has probably done more than any other developer to make annual sports titles feel like a worthwhile experience.

On the "con" side, real-life business issues mean consumers may not be able to use this year's game as a mirror for the real-life NBA for several weeks, if at all.

A die-hard NBA fan who is most interested in the opportunity to play as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird or any of the other all-time greats featured in the game will probably get his or her money's worth from NBA 2K12. But someone who wants to play online matchups with current NBA rosters will be disappointed. It may not be fair that a real-life labor dispute between NBA players and owners may reduce the game's value, but that's life.

Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will be released Nov. 20 for the Wii console, Nintendo announced today.

Nintendo announced a "Holiday" release at the E3 convention, which took place in June in Los Angeles. Skyward Sword will be the first  traditional Zelda title designed specifically for the Wii console's motion controls. Its predecessor, Twilight Princess, was originally designed for the GameCube before being rebuilt for the Wii.

I would like to say that Nintendo also announced a release date for Kid Icarus: Uprising, its highly anticipated 3DS title, but that would be a lie.

Captain America: Super Soldier might actually be the first movie tie-in game that doesn't suck. At least not as badly as some of its predecessors have.

NCAA Football 12 (unasked-asked-for editorializing: I always preferred it to Madden) comes out today for PlayStation 3 and XBox 360.

The 2012 edition of EA Sports' college football franchise not only lets players assume the role of head coach or player, but also conference executive. The game's features include an option to realign conferences, allowing fans to relive the fun of the last off-season's conference moves and (I assume) create their own Pac-Integer or put San Diego State in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Whatever players do, it can't be much loss logical than the Big 10 having 12 teams and the Big 12 having 10 teams. (You've heard that joke before? Sorry.)

Other features include the "Road to Glory" and "Coaching Carousel" career modes as well as animal mascots and team-specific pregame traditions. I haven't had a chance to play this game yet, but college football is generally awesome.

Nintendo came on strong in their press conference. Hot on the heels of the 25th Anniversary of the Legend of Zelda, Nintendo also took the time to finally unveil their successor to the Wii. Did they win everything? I felt their conference did really well for them. But calling it the Wii U? Either they're being zen about the name, or Nintendo is basically telling everyone that no matter what they call it, they're ready to print money.

Movie tie-in games are a staple of the industry along with the notoriety that they often bear as quick cash-ins. Not every movie gets one, though whenever one is made, it's usually greeted with a mixture of dread and fear by those that know their reputation. Exceptions to the rule are rare. The hope that the next project might break the curse also often disappears almost as quickly as the game does into the bargain bin.

Thor: God of Thunder from Liquid Entertainment tries to shatter that reputation, building on the excitement surrounding the film. Yet even for the mighty Nordic godling empowered by Marvel heroism, it proves to be a fight even he can't win.
Here's the new preview for "Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game." This one focuses on the Lego-fication of the Disney franchise's third installment, "At World's End."

The game is scheduled for a May 10 release for Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Wii, PC, PlayStation 3, Sony PSP and XBox 360.
