It's soooooo good to have newly-crowned Australian Open champ Serena Williams back at the top of the tennis world after two years of limited play. She was asked about her fitness after her win over Maria Sharapova and, thank God, spoke her mind: "I'm definitely in better shape than I get credit for. Just because I have large bosoms and I have a big ass. I swear my waist is 29-30 inches. I swear I have the smallest waist. And just because I have those two 'assets' it looks like I'm not fit. I was just in the locker room staring at my body and I'm like, 'Am I not fit? Am I really not fit? Or is it just because I have all these extra assets that I look not fit.' I think if I were not to eat for two years I still wouldn't be a size 2. No matter how slim I am, I always have this [points] and that [points]. We're living in a Mary-Kate Olsen world. I'm just not built that way. I'm bootylicious and that's how it's always going to be."

My friend Henry predicted this result. Roger Federer captured his 10th Grand Slam singles title without dropping a set, finishing a dominating run through the Australian Open by beating Fernando Gonzalez of Chile 7-6 (2), 6-4, 6-4 in Sunday's final. Before the tournament began. I thought American Andy Roddick had the edge since he seemed hungry and maybe Federer was due to lose.
WRONG!
Federer improved his winning streak to a career-best 36 matches, became the first man in the Open era to twice win three straight majors and has won six of the last seven Grand Slam titles -- his only loss was in the French Open final to Rafael Nadal. It also was the first time that a champion went through a major without dropping a set since the 1980 French Open, when Bjorn Borg did it. The 25-year-old Federer now is within four of Pete Sampras' record 14 Grand Slam titles.
Congratulations to Roger Federer!!!

Was out in West Hollywood this afternoon having lunch, running errands then went to see "The Last King of Scotland" at the Sunset 5. Before I knew it, it was time for the Australian Open women's final between Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova. "Oh shit! I'm gonna miss it!" So, I duck into a bar and a grumpy bartender lets me change one of the television sets to ESPN. I wasn't there for long. Serena, whose ranking had actually dipped below 100 last year due to an injury-plagued year, beat the top-ranked Sharapova 6-1, 6-2. And she was wearing HUGE earings when she did it.
She dedicated this improbably victory to her late sister, Yetunde Price, who was tragically shot to death in Compton a few years back. So, Serena now seems top be back on the road to imortality. By winning her third Australian Open title, she now has eight "grand slam" titles in her collections (2 Wimbledons, 2 U.S. Opens and 1 French Open). She needs one more to match Monica Seles' haul then will only trial Billie Jean King (12), Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova (18 apiece), Steffi Graf (22) and Margaret Court (24).
Serena, who used to date director Brett Ratner, is a fun superstar because not only is she an awesome player, she also loves the limelight and has even done some acting on the side. And she makes no bones about how much she loves herself! Who can blame her?
