Rebates under 'Cash for Clunkers' program viewed as tax exempt

The state Board of Equalization has announced that rebates under the federal Car Allowance Rebate System program are exempt from state sales and use taxes. The CARS rebates, paid by the Transportation Department's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, are considered nontaxable sales to the U.S. government, according to the news release.  More information: (800) 400-7115, www.boe.ca.gov
