State Controller releases tax statistics for July
State Controller John Chiang has released his report on the state's cash balance, receipts and disbursements for July. The state started the fiscal year with an $11.9 billion cash deficit, which grew to $16.5 billion on July 31. From July 2 through 31, the state issued $1.493 billion worth of registered warrants, commonly known as IOUs, according to the release. Personal income taxes in July were 11.5 percent, or $335 million, below the same month last year. Sales taxes were up 20.8 percent, or $185 million. Corporate taxes were up 9.1 percent, or $18.9 million, from July 2008. Information: www.sco.ca.gov
