Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market has announced the recall of 12-ounce bags of washed spinach with an “enjoy by” date of Oct. 16.
The El Segundo-based company announced the recall after a test conducted on behalf of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration confirmed to be positive for listeria monocytogenes.
No reported illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled spinach.
Listeria monocytogenes is the same species of bacteria responsible for a deadly outbreak of listeriosis traced to cantaloupes farmed in Colorado.
Symptoms of listeriosis can include high fever, severe headache, nausea and abdominal pain. The illness can be fatal to young children, frail individuals or the elderly. The disease can also cause miscarriages or stillbirths.
Anyone in possession of the recalled spinach is advised to immediately throw it away.
