Two 16-year-old boys were arrested Wednesday in the shooting death of Melody Ross. One is from Bellflower and the other from Long Beach. Police have not revealed which one was the shooter. To read the full story, go to:

To Mayor Foster and City Council members:
Please pass legislation immediately that calls for Long Beach public schools to play their varsity football games during daylight hours on Saturday. Please prohibit games that are scheduled to end after dark.

Mr. Allen you are an Idiot. Like gang related crimes and/or shootings only happen at night. Obviously, you never played the game in high school and do not know the tradition and the feeling of playing under the lights.
This isn't Pop Warner were they play on Saturday afternoon's. Come to think of it, they also play night games. Are you going to request legislation against them also?

It's tradition to play Friday Night Lights. Are we going to keep our kids locked up and never let them go to a mall, movies, or a concert at dark? Should we move to Alaska where there is daylight most of the time and crimes are still committed? We need to let kids be kids and have more security at the games. Will this type of crime still happen, yes, but if more security is at the games, then maybe, just maybe, the 'thugs' will think twice.
I'm not saying we should play our games on Saturday afternoons, but I believe some of the south L.A. schools play afternoon games for the same reasons Mr. Allen suggested.
The only reason those schools play in the afternoon is because they probably don't have lights. I went to high school in South LA and we played our games at night. Playing in the afternoon isn't going to make anything different. If some fool wants to shoot they do it anytime.

Yes, most gang related shooting occur after dark. But don't take my word for it, instead have the crime reporters at the Press-Telegram check it out and you will see that I am correct.
Yes, I played high school football in a large city with many inner city schools. And yes, we played those inner city schools on Saturday afternoon...this is not a new proposal, although it may seem new to you.
You want to stand up for your rights to have Friday night high school football? Tell that to Melody's friends. After all, how many lives are worth having Friday night football...one, ten, or a hundred?
If the tradition of Friday night football is so important to you, then play the games without fan attendance, which is also done in inner cities. I say to hell with tradition; let's put our kids in a safer environment.
