Not to backpedal on the motocross and Dodger Stadium, but nearly 800 comments later, what have we learned?

i-4c36d8b80225e39244b139f8f4825a2f-batt.jpg

Thank you, I believe, is the proper response to all the emails, comments and phone messages that have been posted and left following the recent column (linked here) on Dodger Stadium yielding its facility to last Saturday’s AMA Motocross and an upcoming Monster Truck show.

Thanks, as well, to those who have been provoked to participate in what has become an unintentional sociological experiment into how people today consume, digest and respond to the media.

Apparently, since many voices needed to be heard on the subject, today’s technology has made that easier. Admirably, many signed their names to their opinions.

My ultimate regret is that the point I tried to make was lost in the noise this created. The focus of the story was to point out that of the many uses the stadium could undergo, it’s a shame that a place considered to have one of the best baseball diamonds in the country would be buried by tons of dirt — whether it be for a motocross, monster truck event or this was a shame

It was written in humor with the intention of sharing the history of the stadium, with no intention of insulting any particular group.

Have a look at previous blog items posted here several days before the event (linked here and linked here).

You stereo type motocross racers and fans as if your precious Dodgers were God sent. These racers are FAR better athletes then any basball player. I’m not knocking baseball..I AM a fan of baseball…
But the fact is, Motocross and Supercross packs STADIUMS with more FANS than any other venue in the country. All those numbers add up to great deal of revenue for the local community as well as the stadiums !….As for your “best baseball diamond in the country”, do you honestly think that this is the first time the hard working track crew has burried a ball diamond?…they work very hard to ensure there is no damage to the field.
According to the record of the Dodgers, I don’t think it would matter what kind of grass they were playing on! Before you go getting all tree hugging about your grass, think about what your bat is made out of!

  • mxforlife

listen dude, dont try to backpeddle yourself. were not stupid. your articles focus was not on how many changes a stadium can undergo it was about us motocrossers. man up and apologize like a man. tell us your sorry you made fun of an entire community without any basis on how much of a family sport motocross really is. all you did was compare it to a brett michaels concert. maybe your so mad at brett michaels casue maybe thats where you were conceived after ur parents split a bottle of goldschlager. or maybe your hatred towards motocross comes from high school were the love of your life left your for the back seat of a cb450. either way i was always told if you dont have anything nice to say then keep your mouth shut. so i suggest maybe you should follow the golden rule and shut your mouth especially since you know nothing about motocross. you tryed to mock an entire community and what did we do? as a community we all stood together and stood up for ourselves. we dished back exactly what you dished to us, only difference is we got a possitive outcome and you did not.

  • PamF

For shame. First you write a story replete with inaccuracies and mean-spirited jabs, then follow up with a whine on how it was all a misunderstanding and a “sociological experiment”.

If you’ve got enough guts to post the first story, then keep your head high and stand by it, or hang your head low and apologize.

  • motodude

    you wrote this in the initial article;

“Buy me some ear plugs and Winston Lights. I don’t care if we get in a fight.

On an otherwise beautiful Southern California beachy-keen Saturday in January, Dodger Stadium was transformed into a giant truck stop just outside of Blythe. It was a cross between a Bret Michaels concert, an NRA convention and hog-calling contest.

Big hair, meet big air. No tattoo was taboo. More leather than Garvey, Lopes, Russell and Cey. ”

How does writing that not insult motorcyclists? Why don’t you grow some balls, and just apologize for your derogatory insult to motorcyclists? Or, do you believe the stereotype that all motorcyclists are dangerous heathens? I should send you a picture of my two elementary school age daughters riding there dirtbikes. You can print it out and keep it for a wake up call whenever you seek to denigrate motorcyclist again.

BTW…I think baseball is incredibly boring and a complete waste of time. I would not write an article saying that all baseball players and fans are somehow defective because they like baseball, just because I think it’s stupid.

  • barclaybotch

“Sorry if I upset you” doesn’t count. Maybe you should think back to how the baseball players and other jocks treated you back in high school. “Hatred is the coward’s revenge for being intimidated” – George Bernard Shaw.

  • Andy Northrup

you say that your main point was “it’s a shame that a place considered to have one of the best baseball diamonds in the country would be buried by tons of dirt”. why is that a shame? the precious grass will be fine after the dirt is removed, so why does it matter? if seeing anything other then baseball at dodger stadium bothers you so much, then don’t go in the future. there were about 42,000 people that didn’t have a problem with the dirt in the stadium.

  • cogren

I posted on the other wall and was politically correct but after reading your worthless apology, I realize that we are dealing with someone that is an ignorant piece of crap and even if we tried to be politically correct your to dumb to understand it. First off, you dont do an experiment at a sporting event with over 47k fans. Especially if you are going to trash and bash the fans, like you did. I bet you 50% of the people at that event make twice as much money as you; I bet 40% have a higher education than you; and I BET 100% OF THE FANS THERE HAVE MORE FAMILY VALUES THEN YOU!! I challenge you to write this same type of report on the fans of a NFL team and see what you get. You are a worthless reporter and you should be fired!! FIRED!!!!!!!!!!!

  • mxforlife

WHY WOULD U DELETE MY COMMENT? your a trashy reporter.

  • mxforlife

if i do remember correctly baseball fans like to intentionally throw up on little girls. so shove that up ur ass hoffarth

  • Bretzky

Your more of a coward than I first though.

The first article upset me. This infuriates me, because it shows a man (unsure if whether we can really call you that) who cannot own up to what he says and give a proper apology.

    “First off thank you?”

Really? If you were really thankful for our comments it should be because they opened your eyes to something that you missed. By reading your follow up it shows that nothing has changed. Your just as stuck up and blinded by your pride in your beloved dodgers, and ther beloved grass, to see what is going on around you and the community that you have insulted by your “attempt at humour.”

I’ll give you a better first line… “First off I apologize.”

Try and run with that and we’ll see if I can post a more positive comment to your next article.

  • mxforlife

it wasnt an experiment that was a useless excuse to try and back up what he wrote. hes a jerkoff he should be fired. the article he wrote was complete discrimination we all should band together and file a class action suite. lets sue this guy.

  • Greg Mahoney

    Mr. Hoffarth,
Actually you are backpedaling, whether you choose to acknowledge it or not. Why don’t you come out and admit that it was a poorly researched and insulting article instead of trying to cover your butt and call it some kind of “unintentional sociological experiment”.
In your follow-up article you state that the focus of the article was to “point out that of the many uses the stadium could undergo, it’s a shame that a place considered to have one of the best baseball diamonds in the country would be buried by tons of dirt” and that It was written in humor with the intention of sharing the history of the stadium, with no intention of insulting any particular group.”
If your intent was a discourse about the use of the stadium and not to insult a particular group, why then do you print inflammatory statements like:
Buy me some ear plugs and Winston Lights.
I don’t care if we get in a fight.
    Big hair, meet big air.
    No tattoo was taboo.
More leather than Garvey, Lopes, Russell and Cey
It was a cross between a Bret Michaels concert, an NRA convention and hog-calling contest.
taken over by a gang of Harley Davidson bikers
Dignity dug itself a hole and crawled into it.
Did you attend the event? Did you walk among the crowd? I am not saying that all Supercross fans are upstanding citizens but neither are all baseball, basketball, football fans either. Families that are involved with motocross are strong, supportive and loving families. Your characterization of supercross fans is repugnant and insulting.
Evidently you do not have the quality of character to admit that your article was intended to be a hit piece and that you did intend to poke fun at a particular group of people.
My family has been involved with motocross for years, my kids are better people because of their racing experience. It is not a sport for derelicts as you imply. It takes courage, focus, discipline and fitness. Kids learn sportsmanship and how to maintain their equipment. Most of the kids who race competitively are also exceptional students, that is where the focus and discipline learned in the sport translates to other areas of their lives.
Instead of an insincere thank you, how about a genuine apology?
BTW: Supercross and Motocross are not the same, try to mix in some research next time.

AND BY THE WAY NOT ONCE DID U MENTION IN YOUR ARTICLE ABOUT HOW MANY CHANGES A STADIUM COULD UNDERGO YOU FOGUHT IT BY SAYIN WHY DISTURB THE GRASS YOU DUMB FUCK.

  • racer56sdad

My family attend at least one race every year and the finals in vegas! one thing Mr. Mahoney missed is out of the other sports ie baseball basketball ect.. when a rider wins a championship in supercross you dont have to call out the national guard to protect the city from supercross fans! When have you ever heard of supercross fans tearing up a city?

  • mxforlife

AND WHAT DO YOU MEAN WHAT HAVE “WE” LEARNED. WHAT HAVE U LEARNED HOFFARTH

  • Jaybo

Greg Mahoney said it best….”try to mix in some research next time”

Get off your high horse. You think Dodger Stadium is hallowed grounds? Talk about one of the least friendly atmospheres in all of sports. How many people were stabbed at Dodger games last year?

Supercross is one of, if not the most exciting sport around, and for you to bad-mouth the entire community of motorcycle enthusiasts on the basis of “your” dirt getting ruined, you should be slapped in the face. For once, actual athletes graced the diamond at Dodger Stadium.

Clearly you have a deeper agenda against us than just bad hops on the ballfield, since the argument is null anyways. They tarp and plywood the field and have been doing that for close to 30 years at ballparks all over the nation. I’m pretty sure they have the process dialed, and even replace the sod for you crybabies.

Maybe if the Dodgers weren’t such a disgrace, they wouldn’t have to rent out the facility in the offseason. Seems like your bone should be picked with the McCourts and not the SX community. But they write your checks right?

Go back to curling! You obviously don’t appreciate actual sports!http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff139/Ingerson/20090804_112744_DS00-HOFmain_500.jpg

  • mxforlife

I THINK TOM HOFFARTH IS CRYING

  • Cblanchard

Okay, your story was a total attack and misrepresentation of motocross racers and fans. Motocross racing is a much more dangerous, highly competitive, and more physically exerting than baseball. And deserves to get much for credit then being writing as a silly, dirty redneck sport. As you have written. Shame on you.

  • mx

That was the worst article I have ever read. Very disrespectful

I will be canceling my subscription to Daily News for hiring such close minded, ignorant writers

  • jd4moto

Mr. Hoffarth, what a poor “apology”. Since you had such a vivid imagination on the supercross race, let me try to stereotype you just by your article and bio pic: You are a fat, out-of-shape, Pat-looking jackass who has no appreciation for true athleticism.

  • superjet

    Mr. Hoffarth,

After a reading your article I simply dumped it in the trash where it belongs and wrote it off as just another wannabe writer trying to be clever about a subject he knows nothing about. But then you sunk to a new low with a lame attempt to spin it as an “unintentional sociological experiment” instead of being a man and simply apologizing. To say that your article was “written in humor … with no intention of insulting any particular group” makes you either a complete idiot or a cowardly liar.

  • Tony Pybus

This article is more pathetic than the first one.

  • DIRT SQUIRT

Mr. Hoffart, where on earth did you go to school? Your grammar is atrocious as well as your ignorance and prejudice to the sport on SuperCross.

Do you realize that SuperCross is the most physically demanding sport in the world? Try to run a 20 minute moto let alone one lap around a track.

I cannot believe your editor allowed such drivel and flatulance to spew from your cakehole, you sir, should be fired and removed from society. Your generalization and prejudice remarks should bar you from stealing anymore oxygen.

I find you disgusting, putrid, vile, immature and a liabilty to the Daily News. I hope and pray you run into Mike Alessi’s or James Stewarts father in public one day to give you the punishment you deserve, and trust me, Alessi’s dad will have you for a snack.

  • Jfish

Your title says it all “NOT” to back pedal.

Never heard of you and hope to never hear from you again. I won’t bag on baseball I happen to love the sport. Just wondering why you think Dodger stadium is sooooo special? I’m a D-Backs fan. It’s just another place for un-athletic types go to “write” about baseball. YES, I mean you.

maybe your article wouldn’t have been taken so badly if you hadn’t insulted so many people. I am sure you never smoked cig or drank a beer. But if you have you’d be a hypocrite, which I think you are. Be honest with yourself on this point.

Angel stadium has had 3 races in 1 month for the last couple years, and they don’t seem to have a problem getting the field ready for opening day. Same with the D-backs field, but with two less races.

I would really like to insult you but that would mean coming down to your level of open mindness, which you have none. Opps thats about as bad I can do, since I have never heard of you before.

dirt squirt, im on ur side but if your gonna act like your grammar is perfect then how bout you proof read your comment. you started off by spelling his name wrong and it gets worse. jack ass

Get used to it. Supercross (and dirtbiking in general) is a sport that (like baseball) appeals to parents and kids alike. It teaches kids the responsibilities of physical fitness, good sportsmanship and proper machine maintenance. It allows the participant to compete on personal and team levels allowing them the personal glory of excellence as well as the satisfaction of playing for the team. Sure there are overbearing parents (just like at any Little League game) but in the long run it’s the effort, concentration and skill of the individual that answers for itself. It’s a growing sport that, if it doesn’t sell out, at least stuffs the rafters of every venue it visits. The pits open to the casual attendee, it’s Nascar and F1 for the common man (and woman), it invites him/her in and says “come on – be part of something bigger than yourself”. The stars reach out, sign autographs and talk with the fans. Supercross is what’s coming, and since it’s inception as the Superbowl of Motocross, it’s been around for decades. It’s noisy and exciting. The athletes are at the peak of physical conditioning and the demands of the sport require a clean inward lifestyle for success. When the gate drops and the adrenaline rises it makes other contests pale in comparison. There are many forms of sport all with their benefits but one of the biggest that Supercross lays claim to is – IT IS EXCITING. You won’t see a 7th inning stretch at any Supercross. It’s here to stay so get used to it.

  • dumpweed

OH NO! NOT THE PRECIOUS DODGER STADIUM GRASS! Supercross coming into dodger stadium was the best thing that has happened in that stadium since 1988. News flash dumbass, THE DODGERS SUCK. Besides, the groundskeepers will have that grass looking good again in a month, so shut the fuck up.

    Sports??

Sport involves death or the risk of.
    Bullfighting is a sport.
    Bear wrestling? Passable.
    Motor racing? Always.

These boys put their butts on the line.

    Baseball???
    Please…. Just a game.

Should be honored someone with some testicular fortitude graced the stadium with some respectful sport.

  • Adrenalinejunky

I did not think that a follow up article could possibly make you look any worse than you already do. Your off base assumptions and direct insults to the motocross community are completely uncalled for. The simple fact that you went off on an unfounded rant without any knowledge whatsoever of the people you directed it at is one thing. But to then after being called to the table on your irresponsible writings follow it up with an explanation that aims to poke even more fun at the intelligence of your audience is unacceptable! If you or your editor had anywhere near the character that these men that just graced Dodger Stadium you would write an immediate retraction followed by a sincere apology.

    Tom Hoffarth-
You are a pathetic excuse for a journalist!

Please do the world a favor and commit suicide

  • Heighton109

Mr Hoffarth your article was an unfactual arrogant slur against a sport you know nothing about nor care to educate yourself upon. You tried to sound witty and clever with your article, if you can call it that.
Now my two cents and chance to have a slur. Supercross fans would rather have another race in Anaheim than be in the Dodgers stadium. The stadium is a dump within a dump (Los Angeles). Parking is atrocious, the fans were hearded like cattle due to gang tensions in the area and alcohol sales were suspended early due to the aforementioned – need i continue…..
You may have been disappointed in the use of your “sacred turf” however this should not provoke such a generalisation on the typical supercross fan as you would not like me to generalise Dodgers fans and being a bunch of gang banging Mexicans! I am pretty sure the fans in attendance reflected the area of the stadium rather than the typical supercross fan. This is a family sport where generations of racers tend to enjoy professional racing at it’s best all over the country.
All in all your writing was pompous and arrogant and should never have been printed in the first place, if I was your editor i’d have shredded it. Think before you speak or rather think before you publish next time.

800 responses from the Moto community? How many from the baseball community?
