By the numbers

David Schwartz, the info-man extraordinaire for the Gameshow Network (GSN), has a heads-up about a new book called "Now Batting Number ...: The Mystique, Superstition, and Lore of Baseball's Uniform Numbers" by Jack Looney and Jack Tremmel, about the history of baseball uniform numbers.
And what interested Schwartz most ...
Schwartz's report as he was thumbing through the Dodgers section of the book while watching the Dodger game, he found some interesting trivia:

-- Before Sandy Koufax wore #32, it was used by Bill Antonello in 1953 and Cal Abrams in 1952.
-- Only two players have worn #53, Bob Milliken in 1953 and Don Drysdale from 1956 on.
-- Before Walt Alston wore #24, Hank Edwards had that number in 1951.
-- The first Dodger to wear an uniform number above #40 was George Jeffcoat, who wore #42 in 1939.
-- The first Dodgers to wear a uniform number in the 50’s were Preston Ward (#52) and Roy Campanella (#56) in 1948. Campanella later switched to #39.
-- The first Dodger to wear a number in the 60s was Earl Robinson in 1958 who wore #61.
-- In 1940, two Dodgers used #77, Joe Medwick and Chuck Dressen.

-- The first Dodger to wear #13 was Burleigh Grimes, the manager in 1938. Other Dodgers who wore #13 include Kirby Higbe, Ralph Branca (above), John Douglas, Jim Hughes, Joe Ferguson, Don McMahon, Roger McDowell, Antonio Osuna, Alex Cora and Oscar Robles.
