A Xtra helping of Big Joe

Player_Single_Logo.pngIt was just a matter of time before Joe McDonnell found a new regular time slot to fill in the weekday lineup at Xtra Sports 570-AM, and starting Monday, that'll be the new 7-to-11 p.m. window that's currently taken up with repeats of the Phil Hendrie show. McDonnell's show will also run after Lakers games once the NBA season starts.

If only it could have been the Mancow morning slot..

McDonnell's reemergence comes at the same time when Lee Klein won't have his contract renewed to continue his 10 p.m.-to-1 a.m. weeknight show.

The residual effect: How will Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton (not his real name) blow his stack when he come to grips with the fact that program director Don Martin has kept him shoved back on the weekends instead of reintroducing him to the regular weekday audience that still can't be completely satisfied with how the new afternoon drivetime show has been sounding since he was pushed out.

Mixed blessing. I think Lee Klein is tremendous, and have enjoyed his nightime show. That written, it will be terrific to have Big Joe on weeknights.

Congrats to Joe, who's cool enough. But man, talk about your addition by subtraction. There can't possibly be a more mind-boggling thing in radio today than Phil Hendrie's fake show entertaining a sober adult west of the Mississippi. That he's on the air in Los Angeles, and on a sports station, is off-the-charts bizarre. Go Joe!

Will Lee be staying on doing post Lakers/Clippers games?

Phil Hendrie and Lee Klein were the only shows worth listening to on this decomposing carcass of a radio station. Reruns of Hendrie were better than any live programming the station ever produced. Even listening to that staticy, screaming, drunk Greek is better than the afternoon abortion AM 570 puts on. "Feelin' You"?? Are you kidding me? Hopefully Joe and his 300 lbs of excess skin will be fired yet again in favor of some combination of Lees. There must be a station of Joe's caliber in Barstow or Bakersfield or Little Rock. I never thought I'd say it, but there is such a dearth of decent sports talk in Los Angeles (save for some selected national shows) that I actually miss Hacksaw. Show me your lightning bolt, Encinitas!
