Union Rescue Mission to the rescue on Super Sunday
If the Union Rescue Mission in the Skid Row section of downtown L.A. opens its doors to the poor and homeless on days like Thanksgiving and Christmas, why not Super Bowl Sunday?
Consider it done.
Offering two TV sets and providing as much chili, seafood gumbo, pasta, pizza and beverages as possible, the Union Rescue Mission says it'll have its own party for guests on the first floor of the facility on San Pedro Street, just north of 6th Street, this Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m.
"It is a deliberate effort by URM to bring our homeless friends into activities and events that are on a large, world-wide scale that shut-out the homeless because of their circumstances," said Andy Bales, President of the Union Rescue Mission. "Inclusion in community and activities that people take for granted is an important part of
recovery for the homeless in re-connecting with a sense of normalcy."
The Union Rescue Mission is a non-profit organization started in 1891, the oldest in the city dedicated to serving the
poor and homeless with food, shelter, clothing, medical, and dental care, Christian recovery programs, transitional housing, legal assistance, education, counseling, and job training to needy men, women, children and
families.
