So Cal's All-Time Roster: No. 17
No. 17:
Our pick:
==Billy Kilmer, UCLA football (1958-'60)
Jackie Robinson made a name for himself at UCLA back in the late '30s by lettering in football, basketball, baseball and track. Kilmer almost did the same, making himself the big man on campus as a star in football, basketball and baseball. A single-wing halfback, he was named All-American and team MVP in 1960, leading the nation in total offense and finishing fifth in the Heisman voting. That season, he ran for 803 yards, threw for 1,086 and had 1,889 total yards, not to mention averaging 42.3 yards a punt to lead the team.
As a pro, he really made a name for himself with the San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints and Washington Redskins, playing in the '73 Super Bowl. He was inducted into the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame in 1999.
Runner-up:
==Jari Kurri, Kings ('91-'96), Ducks ('96-'97)
==Jimmy Carson, Kings ('86-'88, '92-'94)
Other No. 17s:
==Erny Pinckert, USC football ('29-'31)
A two-time All-American and MVP of the '32 Rose Bowl. Made it to USC's Athletic Hall in '95
==Rick Fox, Lakers ('97-'04)
==Carl Erskine, Dodgers ('58-'59; also in Brooklyn from '48-'57)
==Mike Battle, USC footbal ('66-'68)
==Alex Johnson, Angels ('70-'71)
==Darin Erstad, Angels ('96-'02, also wore No. 27)
==Mickey Rivers, Angels ('70-'75, also wore Nos. 3 and 5)
==Roy Smalley, USC baseball
==Jeff Cirillo, USC baseball

Along with Luc Robitaille, and Steve Duchesne, #17 Jimmy Carson was part of the NHL All Rookie Team for the Kings. Carson became the second American to score 50+ goals as a member of the Kings (I think it was 87-88). Then of course during the summer of 88, he was traded to Edmonton for Gretzky. I don't remember what Carson wore when he came back with the Kings a 2nd time...but that first tour the teenager wore #17.
