So Cal's All-Time Roster: No. 47
No. 47:
Our pick:
==LeRoy Irvin, Rams (1980-'89)
The Pro Bowl cornerback ('85 and '86) set the record for most punt return yards in a single game (207) against the Atlanta Falcons in 1981. One of only a few players in NFL history to be named all-pro at two positions.
Other No. 47s:
==Andy Messersmith, Angels ('68-'72), Dodgers ('73-'75, '79)
He went into spring training in '75 asking for a no-trade clause. The Dodgers refused. He played the season without a contract, leading the NL in complete games and was second with a 2.29 ERA. He won his court case, was declared a free agent, and Atlanta signed him to a three-year, $1 million deal and changed his number to 17, and gave him the nickname "Channel" so he could promote Ted Turner's cable TV station.
==Joey Browner, USC football ('79-'82)
==Ryan Nece, UCLA football ('97-'01)
Sports Illustrated's choice for the all-time No. 47: Mel Blount, over Tom Glavine.
