So Cal's All-Time Roster: No. 49
No. 49:
Our pick:
==Tom Niedenfuer, Dodgers (1981-'87)
First, the good stuff: 64 saves in six-plus seasons (310 games). A 3-1 record in 17 games with two saves on the Dodgers' '81 World Series team.
All things considered, Buffalo Head is etched in the minds of Dodgers fans for something he couldn't do. Twice.
In Game 5 of the 1985 NLCS at St. Louis, Niedenfuer gave up a walk-off homer to the left-handed hitting Ozzie Smith.
In Game 6 at Dodger Stadium with first base open, Tommy Lasorda had Niedenfuer pitch to Jack Clark in the ninth inning. Clark hit a three-run homer and won the pennant.
A year and a game later, he was sent to Baltimore.
But, at last report, he's still married to one of the Landers sisters -- Judy, not Audrey -- and their two daughters, Lindsey and Kristie, have cut a country-pop CD.
Other No. 49s:
==Charlie Hough, Dodgers ('70-'80)
The knuckleballer who went on to much better seasons once he left L.A., he's known as one of the three Dodgers pitchers who gave up a home run to the Yankees' Reggie Jackson in Game 6 of the '77 World Sieres.
==Charles Phillips, USC football ('72-'74)
==Dennis Smith, USC football ('77-'80)
The Santa Monica native was a consensus All- American as a senior. Lettered four times in football and three times in track. He posted 205 career tackles and 16 interceptions, and played in two Rose Bowls.
==Marvcus Patton, UCLA football ('86-'89)
==Tom Candiotti, Dodgers ('92-'97)
==Rod Perry, Rams ('75-'82)
Had 28 career interceptions and two trips to the Pro Bowl
==Tim Belcher, Dodgers ('87-'90)
Sports Illustrated's choice for the all-time No. 49: Ron Guidry.
