So Cal's All-Time Roster: No. 58
No. 58:
Our pick:
==Isiah Robertson, Rams (1971-78)
The six-time Pro Bowl selection and AP Defensive Rookie of the Year has a website to attract those interested in hiring him as a speaker. But the cool part is an endless loop of him picking off a Sonny Jurgenson pass against the Washington Redskins in a 1974 playoff game and returning it for a 59-yard touchdown and helped put the Rams into the NFC title game.
"Butch" is also famous for being on the wrong end of a play in '78 against the Houston Oilers where he head-butted in the sternum and run over by Earl Campbell on his way downfield.
The Rams made Robertson the 10th overall pick in the '71 draft, and he ended up starting 163 consecutive games, recovering 14 fumbles, starting 13 playoff gams and making 24 interceptions for 349 return yards and four touchdowns.
After retiring from the NFL in 1983, Robertson was president and owner of a cellphone system franchise, got wrapped up in drugs, lost his home, family and business, and took three years to recover, making his new career as a speaker even more important. He founded the House of Isaiah drug and alcohol treatment center in Mabank, Texas.
Oh, and about that time he chased Herald Examiner reporter Doug Krikorian around the practice field in a fit of rage ... here's some more background on that and more about his drug recovery.
Other No. 58s:
==Roman Phifer, Rams ('91-'94, plus four more years in St. Louis)
==Lofa Tatupu, USC football ('03-'04)
==Al Sparlis, UCLA football ('41-'45)
Sports Illustrated's choice for the all-time No. 58: Jack Lambert, over Derrick Thomas.
