So Cal's All-Time Roster: No. 72
No. 72:
Our pick:
==Don Mosebar, USC football (1979-'82), Raiders (1983-'95)
The 6-foot-7, 270 pounder was a unanimous All-American in '82, playing in the '80 Rose Bowl and '82 Fiesta Bowl and helping carve a path for Charlie White and Marcus Allen. Mosebar won the Howard Jones Incentive Award in '81 for the greatest increase in his GPA. He also took USC's Gloomy Gus Henderson Award in '82 for most minutes played. A member of the 1981 USC track team as a shot putter, Mosebar finished fourth in the 1978 state high school meet and won it in '79 as a member of the Mt. Whitney team from Visalia (that same '79 meet, future L.A. Rams star Henry Ellard won the triple jump for Hoover High of Fresno).
Mosebar was a first-round draft choice by the Raiders (26th overall) -- perhaps, knowing they'd need a familar face on the line for Allen. Mosebar was there for that '83 Raiders title team and lasted 12 years in the pros, with three Pro Bowl appearances.
Other No. 72s:
==Al Cowlings, USC football ('68-'69)
You don't really want to go there, do you?
==Jack McDowell, Angels ('99-'00)
==Brent Boyd, UCLA football ('75-'79)
Sports Illustrated's choice for the all-time No. 72: Carlton Fisk, over Dan Dierdorf and Ed "Too Tall" Jones.
