O.J.'s No. 1 at No. 32
At least The Juice has that going for him.
SI.com has put up another list of linking athletes to numbers, and this one, based on the loyalty college fans have to their teams, is likely to cause more e-mail jousting.
Following up on their list of all athletes who have rightful ownership to a particular number -- which led to our list of the top Southern California athletes a few months ago -- the new SI.com list tackles the all-time college football roster. The local USC and UCLA representation are the names you'd expect -- except Marcus Allen gets shafted again and a couple of Trojans and Bruins you may never have heard of are now worth a Google search.
For starters:
O.J. Simpson, No. 32.
Who else? Jim Brown? C'mon. Fireball wore No. 44 at Syracuse, not the No. 32 he made famous with the Cleveland Browns.
So what does O.J. get for such an honor? Perhaps a real Rolex? Just don't go trying to steal that autographed jersey off his table or else (the rest was deleted from the transcript due to pending litigation)
Richard Deitsch explains in his accompanying column that the easiest choices, along with Brown, were Roger Staubach (12), Tony Dorsett (33), Dick Butkus (50) and LeRoy Selmon (93). Somehow, former UCLA defensive back Eric Turner (29) lucked out by having a number that wasn't so popular. (Eric Dickerson, who wore No. 29 with the Los Angeles Rams, was No. 18 at SMU).
No. 20 turned out the be the most star-studded. USC's Heisman winner and current AD Mike Garrett (who didn't win it) had to battle with Earl Campbell (the winner), Johnny Rogers (the runner up), Billy Cannon, Billy Sims, Mel Renfro and Bernie Kosar.
Here are the Southern California athletes who made SI's 1-99 all-time college football roster (and, no, unlike the most recent USC roster, you can't have the best guy on offense and defense both have No. 10):
The winners:
No. 5: USC's Reggie Bush over Notre Dame's Paul Hornung
No. 11: USC's Matt Leinart over Florida's Steve Spurrier
No. 16: UCLA's Gary Beban over Tennessee's Peyton Manning
No. 28: USC's Anthony Davis over San Diego State's Marshall Faulk
No. 29: UCLA's Turner over Bruce Smith of the Great Lakes Naval Training Station in 1942
No. 32: USC's Simpson over Notre Dame's Johnny Lujack
No. 83: USC's Richard Wood, over Missouri's Kellen Winslow
No. 84: UCLA's Jerry Robinson, over LSU's Abe Mickal
The runners-up:
No. 3: USC's Carson Palmer, a runner-up to Notre Dame's Joe Montana
No. 39: USC's Sam Cunningham, a runner-up to Texas A&M's John Kimbrough
No. 42: USC's Ronnie Lott, a runner-up to Pittsburgh's Marshall Goldberg
No. 71: USC's Tony Boselli, a runner-up to Utah State's Merlin Olsen
No. 77: USC's Ron Yary, a runner-up to Illinois' Red Grange (recently named the best college football player of all time in an ABC/ESPN poll)
Note: In our recent all-time Southern California roster, we had another USC No. 77 as the winner -- Anthony Munoz, over Yary. Should we reconsider?
No. 78: USC's Grenny Lansdell (a quarterback from 1937-39), a runner-up to Virginia Tech's Bruce Smith (Lansdell wasn't even considered for our list ... why? No one raised a stink about him being left off. For the record, Lansdell was an All-American in 1939 on the Trojans' national championship team, played in two Rose Bowls, led the team in passing all three years and in rushing and scoring his last two and was put into the USC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003 ... he's just been added to our list, OK?)
No. 80: UCLA's Don Moomaw, a runner-up to Oklahoma defensive tackle Rick Bryan
No. 86: USC's Marlin McKeever, a runner-up to Penn State's Courtney Brown
Those listed as "worthy of mention"
