While you're feeding your pie hole, so will they
The first interesting counter-programming announcements to the Feb. 3 Super Bowl halftime show -- going opposite of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers -- is Spike TV's decision to offer a commercial-free, taped (sorry, not live) version of the Major League Eating competition of ham and egg swallowers (no sausage?)
Joey Chestnut, the reigning hot dog king, is one of the competitors, but Kobayashi did not participate because of what's reported as "an injured jaw." The other Lipitor-seeking contestants include Tim "Eater X" Janus, Tim "Gravy" Brown, Patrick Bertoletti, Juliet Lee, Rich LeFevre and Juris Shibamaya.
The warm-up competition involves a hard-boiled egg eating contest, trying to break the record of 65 in one minute held by ... does it really matter?
This is nothing new for Spike TV, which recently aired the “Turkey Bowl,” “St. Patrick’s Day ChowDown,” and “Wedges N’ Wings," all contests of MLE (which does seem to be in concert with the International Federation of Competitive Eating).
ESPN is in charge of the MLE's July 4 hot dog eating contest, live, where we last saw Chestnut "do a reversal" in his competition against Kobayashi.
