Frank TV ... frankly, we've had enough
It is drilled through your head yet that "Frank TV" returns to TBS on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 11 p.m.?
At least eight promos per TBS MLB playoff game - including two per commercial break at times - aired Wednesday during the tripleheader -- much like last season. Even though half of them promote the show, and others seem to be promoting The Dish Network.
Even funnier, the first promo that comedian Frank Caliendo did for each game seems to be one where, as President Bush, he says:
"If you electificate me president for a third term, I promise more 'Frank TV' ads during the playoffs . . . until you throw up."
At least this time they acknowledge it's a force-feeding effort, which is why TBS has spent $70 million per year (for seven years) to do this round of the playoffs - and promote its fall lineup.
Caliendo, on a conference call with some bloggers yesterday to promote the show even more, said his new favorite impersonation is of TNT's Charles Barkley (more cross Turner promotion).
"Barkley is still pretty new," said Caliendo, the Fox NFL Sunday morning comedy provider. "(In Barkley voice) 'I can say whatever I want and not get in trouble. I'm bulletproof, knucklehead.' Barkley is all over the commercials now, so it hits a different demographic and a different audience. (Bill) Walton does the same thing as Barkley, commenting on basketball for sports fans, but more sports fans know Walton, and Barkley is all over the place, so more people get it.
"As for (John) Madden, I really don't care if I ever do him again, but when people hear it live, that's their favorite. It's cool people react to it. It's the thing I'm still known for, but if you listen to the Madden I did eight years ago, it sucked. I get paid to practice. Basically, that's my job."
