2006 Bishop Amat football schedule + analysis

They use the buddy system over at Amat.

New coach, new QB, no established leader on defense - what's going to happen to Amat's football program in '06? It doesn't take a genius to see that Amat will enter Spring training, passing league, hell week, and finally, the season with way more questions than answers.

OK, new coach Mark Verti was there last season, so the transition, especially on offense, won't be anything to sweat. The schedule, the new league and of course the new division is. Here's the schedule:

9/1 at St Paul (toss-up)
9/8 at Valencia (toss-up)
9/15 Hart (loss)
9/22 Rancho Cucamonga (win)
10/6 Carson (loss)
10/13 St Francis (win)
10/20 at Chaminade (win)
10/27 Crespi (win)
11/3 at Notre Dame (loss)
11/10 at Loyola (loss)

Here's what Bill Lumbergh thinks of the schedule:
PROJECTED RECORD: 5-5
LEAGUE: 3rd (out of four)
PLAYOFFS: Yes, but no threat.

Supposedly, last year's sophomores are a very good group. Many of them were on varsity last year and got some playing time. Running back Dominique Gaisie is a bona fide star, but he needs to stay healthy (something that didn't happen in '05). QB is a major problem. Three-year starter Daniel Robles is gone and Matt Castaneda, who should be this year's starter, is calling signals at Los Altos (interesting). Besides Gaisie, there just isn't a gamebreaker on the roster. And what will the defense do without Jonathan Cornell?
The schedule is very tough. Fortunately for Amat, many of its opponents also have to replace some big contributors. But anyone who's been paying attention knows that Amat isn't exactly drawing the Valley's top talent anymore, thus replacing standouts won't be as easy for the Lancers as it will be for Hart or Carson or Loyola or Notre Dame.

BLUORCA- finally someone gets it! Playing in the Serra league against the best of the best is a level of footbal and commitment most SGV/Inland Empire schools can not imagine! De La Salle while on their run played Mater Dei LB Poly and Amat. Did they knock on anyone elses door? SH, CO, WestCo, Los Atlos? Anyone else? No. Example-Loyola lost four games during the regular season and still won Div. 1 Championship! Nuff said! When the BIG DAWGS bark--bow down! and stop hating . Recognize their commitment and school/player pride! You have no idea otherwise. You doubters have no idea of the skill level. Conparing Former Loyola Coach Grady or current Mater Dei Coach Rollinson to Farrar, Gano or Pasquerella is nonsense.

Bluorca I agree with your post that Amat schedules and plays at a higher level than any other SGV team, and when I say that I wish that West Covina would have played them this year instead of Mater Dei I just mean that I would like to see West Co. step up to play a div 1 power that is considered to be in a rebuilding year,I do understand that even against a rebuilding Amat team, West Co would be underdogs
but I would hope that it would be competitive, like a few years back when Glendora and Damien
had some close games with Amat.
By the way last seasons team was probably the best team talent wise in the past 5 years
that Amat had, its to bad they had such a rollercoaster season beating Mater Dei and Loyola
then losing to teams like St.John Bosco.

It's difficult for people to understand what football is to Bishop Amat high. It's also difficult for them to understand the level that Amat has had to compete in for many years. Other teams like Loyola, Mater Dei, Santa Margarita, and St. John Bosco are of the same caliber. If any of these schools finish their seasons with less than 7 wins, they consider that season a losing one. These schools seem to be graded on a higher scale and people expect more from these programs. For example, if West Covina beat Mater Dei this year, it would probably make the front page of the SGV Tribune. If Mater Dei wins it will be no big deal because it was expected in the first place. In my early opinion, Mater Dei is probably going to destroy West Covina but we will see in time. Bishop Amat has built and earned its reputation as a "football powerhouse." No other SGV school can match Amat's history of not only strength of schedule but its overall success with these schedules. It is tradition that Amat schedules tough opponents. This is how you build your program because win or lose...your learn...you grow. I dont believe Amat is afraid of playing anyone and if they were, I dont believe Damien would be anywhere near the top ten though Damien has a good football program as well. And just because Amat did not make the DIV I playoffs does not mean that YOUR local high school (DIV ?) could compete and/or beat Amat that year. I thought that comment was pretty funny up above. All one has to do is look at Amat's record againts SGV teams (it would be cool if someone could post that) Last year was considered a disaster for Amat and yet Amat still managed to beat Damien, Charter Oak, Glendora, and St. Paul by a combined score of 126-31. Can you imagine what would have happend if these schools (which were considered to be able to compete w/ Amat last year) played teams like Loyola, Edison, Los Alamitos, and Long Beach Poly? These schools are consistantly ranked nationally year after year. I do not think it would have been pretty for those SGV schools. Amat fans have been dissapointed these past few years because the talent has been there but something has been missing from the program. Many are welcoming the change in coaching staff but unless you are in the locker room, you really cannot understand the dynamics and politics relating to any football program. Its a new year, and it will only get more exciting as the season approaches...Go Lancers! =)

Rick, with last seasons Amat team you might have been right as they were stacked with talent, and when they were firing on all cylinders I don't think any local team would have beat them.[the easy wins over Mater Dei,Charter Oak,& Damien are good examples]
But this coming season seems to be a rebuilding year for them so I think your statement of no competition in the SGV for them is false. With Amat rebuilding this year I personally would have liked to see West Covina play them this year instead of West Covina playing Mater Dei, as I hear Mater Dei will be loaded with talent this coming season.

rick hello, is your mind there or what amat did not make playoffs and they wont make it this yr either no qb and new coach

Excuse me please name me an sgv league that was tougher than the Serra League, what other D-1 team is their in the sgv, have them play Mater Dei, Loyola, Servite, Santa Margarita in league plus a very tough non-league schedule. Lets not forget that when Amat played the top local teams, Glendora and Damien, they dominated them. Enough Said.

WOW! is this guy seriously saying theres no competition...did you make playoffs last year? enough said.

Rick Bonds said:

No fear, not playing sgv team because there is no real competition for amat in the sgv except for los altos.

Aram said:

I would also like to know this. I doubt it's because they're scared, which is what's kind of being suggested. The Yellow A did pretty well in that game last year. Maybe someone from the Amat nation would like to comment.
