Myspace.com

This is a hot topic. The LA Times recently did a great article about it.

I have to admit, I actually have an account ...

Here's the thing, I find it useful to contact the athletes I cover using Myspace as a method. Sometimes going straight to myspace is easier than going to a coach or thru the school.
Many of the all-stars in this year's Tribune/Star-News All-Star Basketball Classic were contacted by me via myspace to relay info about the game.
Rather than calling 30 different athletes, I can send out a bulletin on myspace to tell let them know when/where practice is.
There are safety concerns. How do you really know who is talking to your son or daughter? What about pedaphiles? Indeed, there are some valid concerns. But what's the difference between myspace and going to the mall? That's just one thought that I came up with. I am sure some of you have takes on the growing myspace hysteria.

Unfortunately there is no way they can accurately monitor who opens a myspace page. If you look at the posted age on most of the pages it says 18 or 20. We know these are high school or junior high students.

I think it's just the world we live in. In my case, as it states on my profile, the page is dedicated to the athletes I cover or have covered. The No. 1 friend I have is the "A Local Sports Show" myspace account. That is a TV show I am involved with and it's totally dedicated to the promotion of the local high school athlete. I recommend everybody check out that page

Supposedly, anybody under 14 (I think) can't open a myspace account. I wonder what people think about that?

re: myspace.com

My daughter,17, has one and I don't have a problem with it. I trust her and know she wouldn't get in trouble with it. Some kids go way overboard on how much info they give out and how they act. Can be scary. Not so sure how I would deal with someone from a paper contacting her on it. But personally contacting a child through myspace and sending a bulletin out to many at once are different things. Bad people can be anywhere. We have to teach our children to beware.
