I like the idea of the top 3 of the San Antonio
combining with the top three of the Miramonte league, that would be one tough league, very competitive.
There is no way around the fact that there are many pros and cons to the new divisonal allignments.
Mission Viejo will finally (once again) compete in Division I. (The Southcoast League was D-I in the 1990's.) Any team who is ranked nationally should compete at the highest level locally.
Playing against new teams is always exciting. However, it is great to have playoff rivalries between leagues.
The Valle Vista League used to play the Los Padres League back in the mid-1990's. Covina battled with Lompoc a few years in the playoffs and finally beat them for a CIF title in 1995.
Geographic Proximity: I always enjoyed the long bus rides. Also, the bigger the geographic span, the closer the feeling to a state championship. However, it may be easier to have more meaningful divisional rivalries with more local teams playing each other.
I just dont like accepting the term "competitive equity" when re-alligning the CIF divisions. It seems to be a slap in the face to some teams as well as an acceptance of mediocrity for others. Realligning divisions seemingly makes winning a CIF title easier, and thereby of less significance, for some teams while making it more difficult (almost unlikely) for others to win a title.
Winning a CIF title should be a challenge, though, not a given.
Way back in the day, only the league champion made the playoffs and there were far fewer CIF divisions.
Food for thought: league reallignment should be considered across the southland. Take the old Baseline and Mt. Baldy Leagues as an example. A few years ago the top few teams from the Mt. Baldy joined the top few from the Baseline to form the current Baseline League in Division Two. The historically less successful teams from those respective leagues formed their own leagues in a lower division. I would love to see a league that combined the top three (+/-1) from the San Antonio League with the top three (+/-1)from the Miromonte League.
If the CIF does not want the same couple teams to trade respective CIF titles every year, then it should also address leagues that are dominated by the same couple teams each year.
Whats going to happen to the new d.7 or southeastern confrence without the san antonio league. Whos going to step up?
