Swimming coverage ...
I think the problem is that there isn't much coverage besides CIF finals. I think our coverage of that is good. This is because it isn't easy to find out what meets or league matches we should cover. I would love more dialogue with local coaches. And if anybody wants to give me a heads up and what might be some good meets to cover, I will try my best to get out there.

That's Walnut's Rachel Grant, by the way.

How was the Walnut Mt.Sac Swim Invite??
MT. SAC WILL BE CULMINATING THEIR 4TH ANNUAL MT. SAC SWIMMING INVITATIONAL SERIES WITH THE MT. SAC/WALNUT INVITE APRIL 21-22, 2006 AT MT. SAN ANTONIO COLLEGE. THERE ARE 28 SCHOOLS REPRESENTED FROM NEVADA AND CALIFORNIA WITH CALIFORNIA TEAMS COMING FROM BISHOP, PALOS VERDES PENNISULA, ORANGE COUNTY, SANTA BARBARA, AND MANY LOCAL TEAMS (WALNUT, CLAREMONT, GLENDORA, AYALA, DAMIEN, AND MANY OTHERS). THIS MEET IS ALWAYS A VERY FAST MEET, AS IT IS THAT TIME OF YEAR WHEN TEAMS ARE STARTING TO GEAR UP FOR THEIR LEAGUE AND CIF CHAMPIONSHIP MEETS. PLEASE CHECK ON http://events.mtsac.edu FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE MEET (START TIMES EA DAY, EVENT ENTRIES, AND OTHER PERTINENT INFORMATION. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS AT mruh@mtsac.edu.
I'm a local swim coach and the co-meet director of the Walnut High School Invitational. The invitational will feature some of the best high school teams and most elite athletes in the San Gabriel valley. There are currently 18 teams in the meet including Walnut, Damien, Upland, Glendora,St. Lucy's, Diamond Bar, Temple City, and some schools from OC and even out of the state. There will be some great races with outstanding match-ups, so it would be a tragedy if this event were not covered. These athletes work just as hard as athletes in the "higher" profile sports and get far less coverage. It's time that they get recognized for what they do and how good they are. I sincerely hope that someone can come out to cover the event. Please contact me if more information is needed.
I am a little out of the loop but I enjoy reading about swimming. I will see if I can get my daughter to get the information from the High School coach. I know she stays in touch.
I will have Lani Ruh the Walnut High School Coach let you know. I know they swim on Friday night and the Finals on Saturday afternoon but I do not know the exact times.
I also thank you for your coverage. I know you have to play to your strong hand and that is Football, Basketball and Baseball. I also know of several people who subscribe to the paper just to see their kids names on the swimming results.
I there is something we can do to help you get more coverage let us know.
Eventhough our program (Brea Aquatics) is a club program we have swimmers who swim for Walnut, Diamond Bar, South Hills, Nogales, Covina, Los Altos, Glendora, Ayala, Rowland and more of the local high schools. We can get the word out to the local high schools that if they work with you that you are looking to promote swimming more.
Once again thank you.
Re: Swimming
Listing the top ten in swim at the schools is a great idea. Or at least a few from each league. There are things I would love to say but it would only come out as me tooting my childs horn. My daughter doesn't swim club but she has posted fast times for her league. Let's just say that some swimmers who have never done club still deserve to see their name in the paper.
Uncle Donald or somebody - please provide me some info i.e. start time, location and some locals for this weekend's Walnut Invite. I believe I've secured the services of correpondent Brian Baiotto to go cover it. But I need info. Somebody send it! Aren't you all happy? You're requests are being heard.
Now, about swimming coverage as a whole. I will admit that the only time I've covered it is the CIF finals for the past two seasons. I have a great time when I go, and I really enjoy it. The sport is good there aren't many athletes in the area who are in better condition. But unfortunately, we must play to readership and what people want to read about. The Big 3 sports - football, basketball and baseball - aren't to be touched in terms of interest. Everything else just doesn't even compare and I should probably put football on its own pedestal (it's that popular). We try to spread coverage around to the other sports and make sure that, at the very least, we're not missing the really big stuff. I wish it were different. I wish there could be one person in charge of swimming coverage, another in charge of track, another in charge of volleyball ... and so on. Our resources just don't allow it.
It's a strange predicament because no matter the sport, people just don't feel like the coverage is enough. That goes for football as much as it does badminton. In swimming's case, however, it is really true. Covering only CIF finals isn't good enough and we'll try to work on it.

I agree, swimmers are always lower on the totem pole than other sports and are some of the hardest working athletes. There are swim meets everyday locally in which swimmers are always doing very well in. Especially the invites, if there were more coverage at the invites the swimmers would probably be more excited to swim. Its also pretty exciting when the high school swimmers see their names in the tribune, even if it is placing 7th at an invite. Keep up the good work though! I love reading your articles!
This weekend is the Tribune/Star-News All-Star Classic, so there's no way we can get out to cover the Walnut Inv.
I will check out the website, but please remember, we do not cover club teams at anything for any sport.

There is a lot going on with the local swim team. A 7th Grader named Gretchen Jaques who will go to South Hills High School in two years just broke the Southern California Record in the 100 IM with a 59.00. She swims for the same team as Rachel Grant, Brea Aquatics. There are a lot of good area kids that come out of this program and they should get some mention. Check out their website and look at some of the team records that these younger swimmers hold. www.breaaquatics.com They work out at Mt. Sac so they are the local team.
The Walnut Invite is coming up this weekend. That would be an easy local meet to cover and has swimmers coming in from Orange County and also the Inland Empire as well as local teams.
Also I have noticed that the Orange County Register has a top times area, that lists the swimmers who have made CIF cuts in Orange County. This could be done for our area if the Coaches submit those times on a regular basis.
My kids are all older but they did not even do a swimming preview of all the leagues this year. I know 3-4 years ago when my child was swimming they always listed the top kids from each school just like they did with wrestling and other sports.
