2006 Covina football schedule + analysis ...

The guy couldn't sleep on his side for a while after the Tesoro game ...
Covina QB Mike McDonough

Glendora (win)
Ontario Christian (win)
Walnut (win)
Montain View (win)
Sonora (win)
Pomona (win)
Northview (win)
Baldwin Park (win)
San Dimas (win)
Ganesha (win)

Projected record: 10-0
Valle Vista League: Overwhelming favorite
Playoffs: Championship contender depending on what side of bracket Oaks Christian is in.

The first thing that jumps out is that the schedule sets up very well. Glendora will be a challenge in the opener, but I DON'T think the Tartans will simply push Covina around. And I DO think the Colts' speed will give Glendora similar trouble to last season.
It's hard to think Covina will be better than last year's team. This is a veteran team, however, but running back is a major concern with Art Combest graduating and no apparent replacement. The defense will be good again. Soon-to-be sophomore Jazz Daniels is a beast and could develop into a scary D-Lineman. Obviously, the offense will be strong with McDonough back at QB and receiver Jamal James playing a bigger role. Daniels could see time at tight end. If so, he gives McDonough another scary target.
I expect Covina's offense to slow it down this season and not spread the field as much in its core formations.
There's a good chance that Covina will get the No. 2 seed in its new division and thus make the playoffs on the opposite side of Oaks Christian. If that happens, Covina stands a solid chance at making the championship game. Getting a high seed and being on the right side of coin flips would be a big plus for the Colts in a new division where every opponent could be located an hour or further away.

well i think well be coo for next years season even if we dont have a running back but i also think that our defense is going to be hard to pass so we be ready come that first game against glendora no dout

Joe, well see, even the game you are suppose to win could be easily lost. I still Covina will have a target on there back and teams will be playing a little harder to take them down.

rod, first of all glendora is rebuilding it well take a yr and second it ontario christain and not oaks christian its a big difference and walnut well be a joke this yr lucky to be 5-5 face the facts its a easy lineup .

Easy line up, Joe are you nuts? Glendora, Oak Christian, and Walnut will be tough games. There is nothing easy about there schedule. They had to make a change to start playing better teams to improve there program. Don't you think that any body who plays Covina, wants to prove that last year was fluke? They will be gunning for them.

with that easy lineup they better run the table

Aram Covina will be tough. There are some big boys moving up from JV to control the line. Jazz will be a great target for McDonough opening up more field for JJ. The team will be good. They do have a good chance of running the table.I know the Coach Thomas will just have them play one game at a time. The team will be alright.

Aram have you heard of any passing leagues or tournaments for the local SGV schools this summer? If so who & where?

Obviously, this is a preliminary evaluation. If you think Covina gets by Glendora in Week 1, then what's to think the Colts won't run the table?
It's huge for any high school team to have a playmaker at QB returning. McDonough puts Covina ahead of the game. And the defense is going to do just fine.
The record might be better, but the team may not be.
Covina loses receivers Clark and Sutton. Combest was the best running back in the area last season and he's gone. Also gone is leading tackler Frankie Olivas.
Yes, the lines return many contributors and JJ at receiver is one of the best around. Is there a running back? I spoke to offensive coordinator Kevin Glaspy this week and he said RB is a major concern right now. Keep in mind that Covina isn't Los Altos or Charter Oak or South Hills. Teams like this don't come around often and it's hard for the Colts to simply reload.

Aram you said "its hard to think Covina will be better than last year" Do you think they will be close to that level this coming season? Sounds like this McDonough kid is something special, I'll definately go to a Covina game this year.
I wish they had a tougher schedule though,if they are real good it will be hard to gauge them with the easy schedule they have.

wow 10-0...that would be impressive...however i dont think that Coach Thomas and his coaching staff well let there team believe all the hype...For those who did not get to see the colts last season...get there early, cause Farm is going to be running wild...Oh and while Jazz Daniels is a man in a child body...there also return an all cif defense of end and another impressive sophmore who i think played both nose tackle and defenisive end..ask san dimas about him
