2006 Glendora football schedule + analysis ...
The Butler did it!

Glendora has had some nice success over the past two seasons. Coach Mark Pasquarella turning around the Tartans program was something many local pundits saw coming. Glendora has finished second and third, respectively, in the past two seasons in the very difficult Sierra League. The Tartans didn't make it out of the first round of the playoffs in either season mainly because they played in omni-tough Division II. Glendora's opponent in both seasons was Hart.
The question as the 2006 seasons beckons is can Glendora take the next step? With the current coaching staff, it's reasonable to expect Glendora to maintain where it is right now. But without more speed, it's unreasonable to expect the Tartans to be much better.
In order to win in the Sierra League, there must be a combination of size and speed. In order to compete in Glendora's division, the same combo must be present. When analyzing the Tartans, I always get the feeling that just one piece of the puzzle is missing. It's not quite all there.
In 2004, Glendora had a dynamic offense behind QB Jacob Crook and receivers Brandon Bryan and Andrew Kenz. Bryan and Kenz actually earned All-Area honors at receivers in each of their senior seasons.
Last season, with Crook and Kenz graduated, the offense was much more ball-control and had a dynamic running back in Ben Rodriguez and a simple passing system that relied on Bryan to "go up and get it."
Entering 2006, it's anyone's guess as to what the complexion of the offense will be. Rodriguez and Bryan are gone. The QB position wasn't a team strength last year and Garrett Crook, Jacob's brother who got some time under center last season, is likely to take over full time.
The ground game is also a question mark. It's unreasonable to expect another player the caliber of Rodriguez to emerge. Zack Butler and Jordan Edmond are both speedy weapons and the offense will likely be built around them.
Glendora took a step back defensively last season. The Tartans didn't offer much resistence against quality opponents - Covina (27), Amat (31), Arcadia (25), Chino Hills (43), Chino (31), Damien (29) and Hart (27). Basically, if you had speed, it wasn't hard to get behind the Tartans' defense. The secondary was the main culprit and made fans hold their breath when the opposing QB dropped back. I don't see much in the way of improvement coming for the Tartans' D.
Here's the sked:
at Covina (loss)
at Duarte (win)
Charter Oak (loss)
Capo Valley (win)
at Rowland (toss-up)
at Damien (loss)
Chino Hills (loss)
Chino (loss)
at Ayala (win)
Diamond Bar (win)
Projected record: 4-6 or 5-5
Sierra League: Fourth place
Playoffs: No
As of now, I am not optimistic about Glendora making the playoffs for the third consecutive season. Chino Hills looks far and away like the best team in the Sierra League. Chino won't simply evaporate just because Monger has retired. And Damien has the edge on Glendora right now because the Spartans have a playmaker at QB and more overall firepower.
Glendora just has too many question marks heading into summer to feel optimistic about this season. Not being sure about the QB position or the defense is a bad predicament to be in. The coaching staff is good enough to prove doubters wrong, but this is the Sierra League and the division formerly known as D-II we're talking about here. Coaching only takes you so far before horses are needed to go the rest of the way.

Apparently aram you havent been to a glendora summer practice so how would you know how the tartans are going to be this year. You say the tartans have no speed or size well you havent seen jordan edmond lately have you. The tartans do have size everywhere. They have gotten bigger and faster. There is no dept at widereciever? yea they have lost a good receiver with a torn acl but he says he will beable to play and we have hight at reciever to. so before you start saying stuff about the tartans you better go out and actually watch and see what they have.
Coach Mark Pasquarella is one of the greatest football coaches in the area. Look for GHS to do alot better than you Aram or any of the other 'naysayers' around. The season is on the horizon, good things will continue to happen for GHS Football.
I look forward to the COHS/GHS game where the Mayor's Trophy will be on the line for the first time in years. Glad to see this game back on the schedule. Hopefully it will generate as much buzz as the Smudgepot Game between Bonita & San Dimas.
undertone of the mayor trophy game: Coaching Staffs
Mark Pasquarella, Bill Strycula (yes, from the COHS family), Paul Lopez & Co.
vs.
Lou Farrar ("A Local Sports Show's 2005 HS Football Coach of the Year") along with his stacked and experienced staff of proven winners - Dom, Roger Lehigh, Steve Smith, Craig "Moose" Evans & Justin Perri
Glendora has other problems, such as coaches wanting the kids to concentrate on one specific sport. The rumble from the kids is that SOME coaches not ALL are pressuring the student athletes to stop playing multiple sports and "specialize" in just one during the year.
Too bad some talented kids have quit some once outstanding programs due to this un- written rule. That's ashame!
Andrew, you make some very good points, BUT why would you waste this year on a kid you been grooming to start for you after you lose two class acts like Johnny Garcia and Jacob Crook.
You could tell Brad Stockham was not comfortable back there. But don’t blame Brad he hadn’t been taking a majority of the snaps at the lower division. And to further my point in the 2004 season when Jacob Crook went down against Bishop Amat and was lost for a couple of games. Wasn’t it Garrett Crook backing up Johnny Garcia at Arcadia? If my memory is correct I even saw the younger Crook take snaps during the final minutes of that game. So obviously the plan at that time was to groom Garrett Crook to take over after Garcia and the elder Crook left. I think you will recall when Johnny Garcia took over, wasn’t Garrett his back up. Johnny did such a great job stepping in when Jacob Crook got hurt Garrett got few snaps. And by that time Jacob returned Garrett dropped back to the number three slot again and was the J.V starter. Maybe I am wrong and correct me if I am.
Oh well this is just the QB spot we have been talking about. Other spots seemed out of whacked also this year. I just think we are back to square one again with a quarterback this coming year whom has missed out on a golden opportunity to gain some experience this year.
We can arm chair all we want. What’s done is done! Coach P is the boss and I stand by him. Glendora is my team!!! He has done a good job so far. I just think ‘WE missed some chances to have some very, very good years. One thing is for sure I love my Tartan Football.
But then again what do I know!
P.S. Hey congrats to Brandon Bryon for making the shrine game. Brandon you were a joy to watch and this fan enjoyed watching you make some really spectacular catches. Way to go Brandon!!!!! Aram, you are right on! When the college recruiters were in town talking to Jacob Crook they should have been sitting on Brandon’s front porch also.
P.S.S. Oh and one other thing, I wasn’t reading to many bad things about Jacob Crook’s accuracy in all the college recruiting magazines. Wasn’t he was being recruited nationally by some heavy hitters in college football. Somebody was seeing something there in that kid. What ever happen to him? Last time I heard about Jacob Crook he was playing in the Tribune All-Star baseball game and going to UNLV on a football Scallie!
Mike, I can see why you think the window has been shut in the past 2 years but in all honesty the reason Garrett Crook hasn't played is because we have had other players (Brad) that fit in better. He wasn't quite ready last year but this year he is. Now Garrett has an arm, not a Jacob arm but he can definetly throw the ball.
What people did not realize about Jacob was that his accuracy was not very good. Don't get me wrong, he was a hell of a player but he overused the power on his balls. Garrett has the arm but not only that he has the touch. I think in the past 2 weeks of spring practice I have either said or thought "Man, good ball Garrett." I remember thinking the same thing when he played JV.
I think if we execute this year we can go at least 7-3. A lot of people on other Sierra league teams lost graduated as well. So I think the league won't be so cutthroat.
i think that chinohills is over rated they had all seniors and 4 star sophmores last yr with no oline the only reall threat is cory harkey michael harris and wade oneil i think if glendora can get some early points they could stop them
Something is going on at Glendora and some of us here can't figure it out. We had kids on this years team who should have started this year and didn't. We had a chance to groom some talented kid's but lost the chance.
This year’s club should have been a lot stronger than they were. Something just wasn't right; you had the kid's in Glendora's lower division teams when Kenz and Jacob Crook were juniors ripping up their opponents. It almost had the old Temple City High School feeling of the 70’s where the kids were being groomed into the system. In the stands this year the question was being ask why are these kid's whom are now juniors not getting any playing time and necessary experience.
Perfect examples were in the offensive backfield and the Quarterback spot. Jacob Crook's younger brother has an arm just as good or better than Jacob, but he got only a few snaps this year. The kid was the #1 quarterback his freshman year and sophomore year and if I remember right he took some snaps behind Johnny Garcia at Arcadia when he was a sophomore why wasn't he the quarterback this year? In fact the kid at quarterback this year wasn’t even on the radar screen behind Jacob Crook and Johnny Garcia. If you spent all this time grooming him why wasn’t he your guy this year. We could not throw the ball down field without it looking like a flailing duck every time and hoping that Brendon Bryan would come up with it.
Our offensive backfield with Zack Butler has game and has shown the same kind of desire that Ben Rodriquez has. Ben Rodriquez is the high school equivalent to John Riggins. That kid has desire and was never one to quit on anything he will be missed. We just don’t have the size at Glendora. Our kid’s have the desire I will give them that.
I think you got it right. Glendora will be right where it is now, or maybe even drop a few more than expected. This upcoming season in my opinion was Glendora's year to shine but I think we missed an opportunity without experience we are just a so- so team.
But then again what do I know!
Glendora is better on offense than most people think. They have some younger players that are going to step in and they have depth at receiver. Crook has learned for 2 years and should be fine running this offense.
As for the defense you are probably right about that, the secondary is still young but should be better than last year.
Transfers by students is common not only for the sports programs but also for the learning programs and the student safety aspect.
To transfer doesn't the prospective school have to offer a course that the primary school does not?
Would you want your child going to a school where they do not offer challenging courses?
Would you want your child going to a school that only tries to get them graduated or a school that emphasizes going to college?
Would you want your child going to a school where there are gang related incidents happening daily or would you do whatever it took to get your kid into a safer school?
My point?
Not all transfer students are on the football teams.
all i can say aram is we well wait and see and like i am all the time i well be right.and by the way chase never gives the play away.
Probably some of both. Sorry to be on the fence...
I'd say that LA, SH and CO have winning programs such that athletes want to go there to win championships and be recruited by colleges. It is likely that current players encourage their jr. all-american and pop warner friends to transfer in.
I have no sense of whether or not respective coaches actively find players. It is possible that it happens, and of course it would be unofficial. What is the term the CIF cites? Undue influence? Realistically, too, players are not going to transfer unless they think they can have a starting position right away...how do they get a feel for that?
With school crowding as intense as it is across the SGV, would those schools admit non-athletes who want to transfer into the district?
I know of a couple coaches from a long time ago on the West side who had an informal agreement with each other. They were cool with cross-border players as long as those players were in a respective school beginning freshman year. There is a huge difference between the situation of a kid living outside a district but attending another high school for four years, vs. a kid who transfers later in high school.
At the end of the day, though, these are high school kids whose parents/guardians should be concerned about their futures. I'm sure most people involved with a transfer think they are doing what is best for the kid in the long run. I just hope that transfer decisions are not made irrationally, especially since they can have a significant impact on the kid.
Is it the schools on the East side who are cherry picking the athletes or the athletes cherry picking what schools they want to go to on the East side?
I think people mostly have it wrong - Los Altos, South Hills, Charter Oak - aka the three schools with the largest amount of transfers - sell themselves. The kids seek them out, I am not so sure that it's as rampant the other way around.
I don't think anybody can argue that Duarte, Monrovia and John Muir all have an abundance of skill positions. They certainly do not have the plethora that you see at LB Poly, and all that talent does not always translate to victories and championships, but those schools have some football players living within their district boundaries. Also, just think how good they would be if the schools on the East Side did not cherry pick....
According to some people ... Duarte has up to 20 D-I prospects at all times.
Speaking of Duarte ... Falcs coach Wardell Crutchfield gave me a nice Duarte Football poster and I put it up on my desk. You know what? I never got one complaint. Now, if the poster was from South Hills or Charter Oak or Amat, people would be saying even more crap behind my back than they do already.
Not to re-open the OC discussion, but is Capo a guaranteed win? They are used to playing tough teams in their conference as well.
To acknowledge discussions on the other threads: It sounds as if some of the locals think G-Dora would benefit next season from sweet-talking some of the Duarte freshman and sophomore DB's after they beat them this season.
If I thought Rowland could come out and pass all over Glendora, then I would feel comfortable with saying Rowland will win. That's not Rowland's style, as you know. So, if the Raiders think they're going to come out and simply push around a Sierra League team and win a ball control game over Pasqy and the Tartans, then I think the game will end up being close. I can promise you that Pasqy will know that Phillip Chase is going to run the ball if he touches his mouthpiece a certain way before the snap or if he lines up a certain way under center. I would take Rowland's weapons over Glendora's, but I think the Tartans will do just fine at the line of scrimmage in this game. My vibe is that it will be something very physical. I am thinking like 21-14 either way. But you can't sit here and act like Rowland winning is a foregone conclusion. And stop saying that I don't give Rowland its due. That argument is OLD!
Again, Joe, you give me the address and I will come down to your office and tell you how to do your job. LOL! Remember that line, my friend? That was some funny stuff from last season.
By the way, thanks for posting on this site. I like to read your posts.
how in the hell is the rowland game a toss up ,come on aram rowland well hammar them quit putting rowland in the back seat.
