2006 Monrovia Wildcats football schedule + analysis ...
Is this a church or a football school?

Big time recruits, flashy skill players and championship fever are what Monrovia fans have to look forward to this season.
I did some calling around because Monrovia is not a team in my coverage area. I do follow the Cats nearly as close as I do my core schools because Monrovia is one of the schools discussed on a TV show I am a part of.
I made an interesting comment about Monrovia athletics during our final show of last school year. I said the school is experiencing a sports renaissance. No disrespect to Ms. Gates/Mrs.Sumulong, but the biggest renaissance taking place on campus has to do with the football and baseball programs. The baseball team just won a CIF title and now many people feel it's the football team's turn.
The excitement leading up to this season went from palpable to hysterical when the Wildcats got two skill position transfers that, when added to what was already returning, give the team one of the best offenses in the SGV.
QB David Potts is one of the top weapons around and is fully experienced entering his senior season. He gets Los Altos transfer James Davis at running back to hand the ball to and a speedy target in Damien transfer Tyler Thompson.
Potts arguably benefitted most of any player in the program by these two arrivals. As good as Monrovia will be offensively, the only thing tempering my optimism is the defense. M-Town's 20 points per game allowed last season looks OK on paper until you see what quality teams did to the Cats' stop unit. West Covina put up 42, Charter Oak 34, Rosemead 27, Temple City 27, Crespi 32.
If Monrovia wants to take the next step, it must prove capable of making stops against good teams. This isn't exactly breaking news, so one would have to assume that improving the defense is Coach Steve Garrison's biggest concern given how good/reliable the offense looks right now. Here's the sked:
at Montclair (win)
Duarte (win)
at Arcadia (toss-up)
West Covina (loss)
La Salle (win)
La Canada (win)
at Blair (PCC) (win)
San Marino (win)
Temple City (win)
at South Pasadena (win)
Projected record: 8-2 or 9-1.
Rio Hondo League: Overwhelming favorite.
Playoffs: Yes, championship game contender.
The newly added game against Arcadia appears to be the acid test that will tell everyone just how real the Cats are. If Monrovia rolls thru the Apaches, they'll probably give West Covina a better game than I currently envision. Don't sleep on Arcadia, however. From what I've heard, the Apaches have gotten some ringers of their own.
The game against West Covina, if M-Town somehow wins, could propel the team to a No. 1 seed in the playoffs because I just don't see the Cats being touched in the Rio Hondo League.
Coach Steve Garrison turned around Monrovia's program in the 90s, but the fun has kind of stalled in recent years. That's about to change and M-Town fans can get ready to see some primetime football again.

Let's talk about some TC. According to Coach Mooney, TC should be tough this year. They have a new lineman transfer, Doug Howard and return many more. M-town might not be a lock for the Rio Hondo.
TC won RHL this year, again. Monrovia is not what its cut out to be. Douglas Howard is not a starter, and it seems unlikely that he'll start next year. TC will have some trouble next year, considering they are losing many of their senior playmakers.

Wondering about Damien transfer Tyler Thompson. This kid can't catch a break. Leaves Damien because of playing time at running back and Los Altos featured back transfers back to Monrovia. Damien doesn't have a running back to speak of and Tyler certainly would have gotten a serious look. Speaking of tough breaks heard his shoulder was separated? He's a great kid, with big time speed but "How's he figuring into the MHS offense?" Go Tyler-- big fan! Best wishes.
Your right about 02 & 03 New York, M-Town killed us with speed in 02 & won a close one in 03, but in 01, West Co won easily and I'm pretty sure they won in 00.I don't know If they played in 99,but if they did then West Co won in that year cause they were 6 wins & 0 losses in pre-season, so overall I would bet the series is pretty even.
By the way...enough talk about West Covina's dominance over Monrovia. WC has won the past two years. M-town crushed them in 02 and then, with a struggling and reloading year, M-town beat them again in 03, the year before WC won D-7.As I noted earlier, we beat WC in 94 and 95. I'm not sure when the series was renewed, but I'm confident that from 96 through 01 M-Town probably would have at least been 4 and 2 against WC had the series been played every year.
A separate point: Coach G and Coach M both deserve a lot of credit for awakening their respective sleeping giants. Coach M brought home a CIF title, and now it looks like G should bring one home as well.
Maggiorie started his coaching at West Covina,
I know he's been the coach since the 99 season when D.Bar won the div.2 title, I'm not sure
but I think he started around 97 or 98.
The 'Cats got their equipment today... and are in shorts tomorrow through Friday. The hitting starts Sat morning... right after breakfast!
Makes sense. Thanks for clarifying that. How long has Maggiorie been HC at WC. Where was he before that?
Did Monrovia open camp this week? Any word on how they look?
New York BigM was posting to Steve not about him, he was actually posting about Mike Maggiorie
the W.C. coach that played for Oregon St., as far as playing next to Pellum McDaniel I'm not sure.
Did Steve of WC play alongside Pellum McDaniel in the late 80's?
Top-down pride will certainly make a difference in the often overlooked high school trenches.
So true, NY... but a big, smart, athletic line is as good as football gets!
Steve... The coach at WC is a former DL from Oregon St. He takes pride in his line and I'm sure they will be formidable.
A big line is not always a good line.
what do you think about west covina o line this year they have so big kids.
oops...
"...which is lacking not in name..."
Those In-N-Out gatherings were a good time, and I am very excited for the rebirth of this grid-iron match-up. It will prove to be only a good thing for both cities. La Salle is a necessary game for the time being, but eventually I'd like to strengthen the schedule a bit. We need PHS AND Muir as well as Arroyo back on the schedule. Of course, it is fun to play teams from the East Side (the past couple years have not been much fun, but that will change imminently).
You're right about G's enviable task of distributing the ball to his playmakers. Some of you out there might say, "with all that talent it should be easy." Well, it would be an easy decision for Mike Mooney if Davis were added to the TC roster. Guess who would get the ball just about every time... However, there are a whole bunch of other guys wearing the Green & White who need some bones once in a while. Distributing the rock becomes a challenge when you are blessed with several play makers. It can be done, though. They should take notes from Thomas over at Covina. They seemed to have an efficient distribution this last season.
A decade is far too long. It will not happen again. Saturday morning was great. I felt like we were all there in some Odessa diner discussing Gary Gaines leading the Permian Panthers (G and the Wildcats) into a championship season.
"...which is lacking not in fame..."
NY -
It was great to see you and the guys on Sat. Let's not wait another 10 yrs., ok? As far as the Green and White... another season and an even better chance at CIF glory, is what awaits the Cats. With the weapons they have, it will be an enviable task for Coach G to distribute the ball to his playmakers.
I love the addition of Arcadia and La Salle. It's about time the Apaches step up to plate... as opposed to poppin' off at In-n-Out on Friday nights. I hope we can add Arroyo to the mix... or add PHS. Let's make the non-league sked a regional round robin.
"There's a high school in the Valley..."
FreshmanDE,
You are right. The players that have come out of Monrovia's Frosh team can play with anyone. The key has always been having the whole group maintain focus and a deep, burning desire to win championships at the varsity level. What you do now will prepare you for your success... or failure, at the next level. NewYork is right... get off this site and hit the books, run the sprints, train in the weight room... and make us proud!
"There's a high school in the Valley..."
Great info. about the Hitchcock family...I did not know they were Monrovians.
The talent is always deep at Monrovia. We need to execute.
FreshmanDE,
Good luck with your career. However, you should probably stay off this website and get back in the weight room. I'm sure your coaches will not be happy when they hear that you are participating in this dicussion. Come back and join the arm-chair-athlete fun once your playing days are behind you.
Go 'Cats!
It sounds like West Co. will have their hands full with Monrovia this year if Potts,Davis,Tompson& Brooks are that good, it looks to be a great game. I do remember seeing
Monrovia at the bonita tournament, and they beat Rancho C. in one of their games, they just may live up to the hype we'll have to wait & see.
I know MHS has some real good talent this year. We have David Potts, James Davis, Tyler Thompson, and Eric Brooks. All these athletes are very talented. And you have to think of the players going into Varsity in a year or two. The Freshman team have alot of talent and size. I am one of our freshman. I am 6'2 210 pounds. Think of how big i'll be in a couple years. We have good recievers and running backs too. If we dont see anything from the Varsity team we will see alot from our Freshman team.
Bob Hitchcock was also a Monrovia Resident. He would come out to all of the Pee Wee games and scout for some good talent from the monrovia bobcats junior all american teams. His Son was scott who was a TC finatic He went to one of the toughest Jr. High schools in the area at that time. Yes Santa Fe jr High. If it were a high school it would have won league a few times. Every good athlete seemed to have passed through that school. As Scott hitchcock got a little older and a little wiser he himself realized that TC probably would'nt have won nearly as many championships in the 70's Had MHS been in the Rio Hondo league. But hats off to TC...they allowed MHS into their league and both teams seem to be kickin A...s. I think that there is definatly a mutual respect for each others game. Ultimately MHS will be dominant when it comes down to having just plain born athletes.
That link would be cool Aram, since I don't have Adelphia cable.
Dan,
It's called "A Local Sports Show" and it's an Adelphia production that goes out to Adelphia cable TV customers in the foothill communities ... San Dimas, Glendora, La Verne, north Covina, Monrovia, Bradbury. We don't solely keep it to teams in that area ... we try to discuss the entire local area. Uh anyway, I am trying to see if I can get a video link of the show from the Tribune's prep sports website so that more people can see the show.
Aram what is this T.V. program you do what time is it on & o you talk about SGV schools?
I suppose grandiose is all relative. Besides, it would not be MY program, it would be The Town's.
Go 'Cats!
Nice NY,
Your philanthropical side is coming out - starting your own Jr. All-American League? I take it this will happen when your run in the market is over? Funny things happen to people when they go big time and move to the Apple. They start getting grandiose ideas. I love it!
Uh, about TC - yeah, the kids were prepared to run the system and that certainly helped things.
Monrovia does not have a Jr. All-American program. Maybe when the dust settles I will help start one. Most MHS skill players grow up playing in the Duarte Jr. All-American program with a handful coming from Arcadia's program. And of course, most linemen don't get into pads until high school, anyway. I've always been impressed with Arcadia's youth sports programs: Little League baseball, AYSO soccer, and the Jr. All-American football. The level of parental involvement is what makes it work.
I'm psyched that MHS has Arcadia back on the schedule. I hope the match-up becomes permanent. It should be great for both programs.
Time to throw AT a bone: The most successful Jr. All-American program I can think of would be Temple City's during the time that Coach Hitchcock was at TCHS. By successful, I mean it was an integrated system that prepared kids to play at TCHS. That's when Hitch set a CIF record for consecutive championships in the 1970's.
Aram, speaking in third person, doesn't pretend to be an Arcadia expert. The Apache Nation isn't a part of my panoramic coverage zone. They're part of the Star-News zone. So, I will have to deflect this one to the other readers or yourself because I honestly don't follow. I do follow Monrovia nearly as much as one of my local teams because the TV show I do includes M-Town as one of its core teams. I also follow TC, because it's my alma mater. I guess I could follow Arcadia because that's where momz lives, but I don't.
Aram, being such a great insider, what do you of Arcadia's schedule? From what I heard, they have some quickness, speed, and size.
A left field note for everyone, did you know: arcadia's jr. all american program developed many kids that play for monrovia.
Knightmare,
Way ahead of you, sir. Check the May archives on the right side of the main page and you'll see Arroyo's schedule + analysis as the third item down.
yea aram, you need to do a schedule analysis of ARROYO asap. Alot of big games, huh? at TC in week 1, always fun. Alhambra and El Rancho at A-TOWN in weeks 3 and 4. Then the rivalry game with rosemead at ARROYO in week 8. I can already see Singiser with the MVL Crown on. GO KNIGHTS GO!
AT,
It sounds like these guys from Arroyo need their own thread.
Did you guys know that Arroyo was Monrovia's big rival in 1960's? I'd like to have that game back for historic purposes.
Hey ur worst knightmare :
I'm with you on everything you said except that I would not label him King just yet (Prince maybe), don't get me wrong I do think he's a good coach and has done a pretty good job but when it comes to Coach MacKinnon I'm just bias. I know coach (DJ) is still involve and I talk to him at the games, But it would awsome to see him with the head-sets on.
I grew up watching DJ MacKinnon coach the knights for many years. I witnessed countless MVL titles thanks to his brilliance. He is without a doubt a legend. But I can also proudly say that Singiser has stepped up and rightfully proven himself as the new king of Arroyo. Singiser has an incredibly bright future ahead of him. MacKinnon is still involved with the program, offering advice when Singiser asks it, but I too desperately want him back on the coaching staff. Talk about a dream team of coaches that would make. The dream is that our beloved coach will some day return to coaching and help lead the knights to another CIF Championship. I believe! GO KNIGHTS GO!
I also forgot to mention at the passing league tournament. How talls is Kendall Boggs? He seemed extremely tall, 6'3 6'4? I also happened to notice the fullback for monrovia. This kid must have looked like he was 5'10 250 and benches 340 pounds. Arcadia also had some stout kids. Their linebackers were 5'10 230, 6'4 245, 6'1 230. Pretty good sized kid. The 6'1 230 pound kid was a upcoming sophomore who I had a chance to speak with. Great kid, very respectful and very quiet. He said he ran a 4.9 40 but looked a bit faster than that. He said the linebacker that is 6'4 has a scholarship offer from Wyoming. Just thought to add that.
I was at the Arroyo Passing League games and I watched Arcadia vs Monrovia. There were possessions where Arcadia just looked dominant. Arcadia just received a transfer from UCLA defensive coordinator son Dewayne Walker. His son, Kevin walker is about 5'11 185 pounds 4.5 40 and is extremely well coached. Walker and two other receivers, one looked like he ran a 4.4 40 the other was a bit slower but with sure hands. Monrovia looked like it had a lot of talent but and will be very good in these next couple of years.
Monrovia has a great football staff and is well organized from the lower levels to the varsity program. Monrovia will prevail any outcome they face on the field of dreams.--Football. Success starts at the helm. Leadership and discipline wins championships.
Coach Alonso, Monrovia HS-Line coach-Frosh.
More good news for M-Town is that the school board and city recently approved a large school bond, which will be partially allocated to a new football stadium equipped with Field Turf and an all-weather track. Improved facilities should make it more enticing to keep kids home. Although, it will be disappointing not to see the end zone painted like a checker board.
Yeah, you know you're in trouble when you're banking on a choke and not simply believing you can run a team over. Hey, Mooney and The Dealer are shrewd coaches and they can spoil all of this, no doubt. But back when M-Town had its truly stacked teams, the Cats didn't choke against other RHL teams. I hope Coach Garrison has a monster season.
hsfbfan: As BigMLover said, MHS would do just fine with the home grown talent. I think it's safe to say that McAlister and Towns would have been welcomed additions to Monrovia's 1994 squad. McAlister's old man was part of the infamous "Blair Pair." It's no surprise he ended up at a Pasadena high school, but I bet he would have stayed in town had the MHS program been competitive in the early 1990's.
AT: You summarized all of the arguments against MHS well. It sounds like the haters are banking on MHS losing games rather than their opponents actually beating them. (Of course, you think WC will actually beat them). Admittedly, MHS has choked and underperformed in the past. But it is tough to assume that a team will choke when putting together pre-season predictions, isn't it?
The ones who tranferred out of MHS was Ryan O' Hara & Jason Martin and attend U of A. Ryan O' Hara never developed and Jason Martin left U of A O'Hara, I believe went to Loyola, lived in Arcadia, left loyola and moved to monrovia, then went to Muir.
Chris McAlister from PHS/U of A/ Ravens went to Santa Fe, same with Lester Towns.
Win or lose, Monrovia talent is always deep. Hardnose makes a good point, although I believe Tom-tom(Thomas Herring) transferred to Fremont after starting as a freshman at MHS. That same year two kids transferred to Muir who then ended up at UofA. Also that year were several talented juniors who left, most notably Eddie Gilmore who tore it up at Claremont. That all fed into a terrible 2001 season.
The team this year reminds me of the 2002 season. Potts has underperformed his first two years, but who had heard of anybody on the MHS 2002 team prior to their senior year when they lit up West Covina.
Scfbfan: predicting MHS to win the Rio Hondo is not hype. Hype would be predicting a 14-0 season. TC was strong and very well coached druing Reid's senior year. Although Reid dominated in every way, TC still did not have enough.
I did say he's done a good job. But that's my point (we have a legend who retired to watch his son play) but should have been back at Arroyo. Your not telling something new, since the early 80's it's been about a good talent base, discipline and tough hard nose football (That's ARROYO football) I happen to think we lost a bit in each of the areas I just mentioned and that DJ brought all of that to the table. But I am definitely pumped about the talent and what I just read about our chances. Go Knights
Not the same? The guy had to replace like 18 starters his first season and he still won the league. The next year, Arroyo is 12-0 and in the semifinals where they lost to South Hills (no shame). Last year the team was two players and upset a league champ in the first round of the playoffs and gave South Hills a battle in the second round. It doesn't get much better than what Singiser has done and to sit here and act like DJ would've done any better is ridiculous. Following in the footsteps of a legend is hard for anyone, but Singiser has done a great job and possibly even exceeded expectations.
About this year, I've caught only glimpses of Arroyo thus far and I can tell you they look talented. I've heard good things about the new QB but that's mainly passing league info and they supposedly have a solid deep threat in receiver/defensive back Marcos Sanchez. Perhaps the team won't lose its offensive versatility with Salmon and Leon gone. The MVL is real simple this year (from what I can tell) - Arroyo and Rosemead.
Arroyo, like Rosemead, always starts with a good talent base and a good breed of tough kids. This year will be no different. They might need a little time to gel.
I have no clue what DJ is doing. If he wants to jump back into coaching he could've had most any job around that was open last season. Or maybe he wants back in at Arroyo. I really have no clue what the deal is. If Arroyo insiders want to enlighten us, please do.
NOT THE SAME.... He has done a good job but he's not DJ. Why was he not on your Best coaches list ? How do you think Arroyo will do this year and what's the talent like....
... yeah and you have one of the best coaches currently in the sgv coaching them now.
Let me be the one to change the subject since I just read hsfbfan comments about the Arroyo tourney. How is Arroyo looking this year ? I need some info about my knights, it's hard to watch them play knowing that we have one of the best coaches in SGV history not leading our boys... I know Mackinnon still works at the school, It just doesn't make sense........
Let's keep it real....MHS has players who cant even join the team because of some league infraction such as grades, that if recruited anywhere else would be all american. I remember a time at MHS where they litteraly had players who could have started anywhere that could'nt play because of their grades that ended up transferring out to play at much more notable High School programs such as Long Beach Poly, City schools such as Manuel Arts(Thomas)(USC) 6'8 300 Lbs. Believe me the talent is there, It just takes a good coach and Great Fans like the wildcats have to bring it on. And speaking of post season Play, I would bet anyone in the San Gabriel Valley that MHS has been in more playoff games than pretty much anyone and has gone to the Final games more than anyone, so as for the last two years things got a little laxed but from what I know the talent will rise back to the top, not only this year but for years to come. No one has even mentioned probably the most talented running back at MHS who is only a sophmore and the fastest kid on the team (Kendall Boggs) I think as a freshman he played like most teams seniors, with the experience he will get this year He will head right into a division 1 school from MHS. Last but not least, I think the reason that MHS has such a good spirit is that it is one of the most racially mixed schools in Southern Cal. That has always been a factor. Lets face it you need great people from all walks of life to have a winning program. MHS has that.
I heard MHS played Arc in a passing game this summer at Arroyo HS. From what I heard, MHS had a difficult time covering Arc's receivers. I was told they are around 4.5 40 yard dash speed and they also return the pacific league 100 meter champ. MHS as some quick kids, too. Then again, passing league means nothing.
I can't wait for the season! I am fired up too, Aram. So many great match ups this year.
No D1 talent at TC for sure is what I have heard too..... easy scfbfan..... easy
Aren't my Rams breaking in a new QB this year? And didn't a certain all-everything running back nicknamed "Sushi" graduate? Sounds to me like LC and TC rooters are banking on an M-Town choke more than believing they can simply stack up. Sometimes teams are too talented to choke. Crap! Am I going to have to sweat west SGV football like I do my own beat? Because you guys are getting me fired up!
scfbfan, you made a great point about the MHS pre-season hype, but lets get real about throwing around the D1 word. As far as I know, TC is stacked this year but they do not have any D1 kids.
I am so sick of all the hype Monrovia gets from the star news every single year... the last three years, monrovia has been the "overwhelming" favorite and how many times have they won the RHL championship? they only shared it once in 04 and almost lost to blair that year. Since he was a sophomore, Potts has been highly touted but is he really living up to the hype? Plus monrovia isnt the only team that has D1 type athletes. LC has peterson at running back, while TC brings back Dwiwht Broadnax and dominant O-line/D-lineman Brian Soumakian not to mention a stifling defense with lots of young talent spearheaded by another D1 type talent, junior linebacker/fullback Williams Do. TC has won for years with Mike Mooney's and Randy Backus' run and defense combination. The front seven has always been the rock of the D but TC has something that its been missing for the last couple of years, shutdown db's in Matt Moreno and Dwight Broadnax. Plus both TC and LC can completely outcoach Monrovia, which usually gets by on its underperforming talent. So please enough with the Monrovia hype.
We play Saturday games out here. Wierd, I know. But then it's off to Pipers' Kilt in the Bronx to catch the college night games and the Pac-10 games.
G and Bell would definitely be welcome, but it may be tough to pull them away from their local dive. And of course, I'm sure they want to scrutinize that night's film as well as get a jump on the following week.
First person who says "Hooters" gets a cyber c-punch.
I'm definitely looking for things to besides eating at Alfredo's after Fridy night lights. But going to Spires with Garrison isn't one of them.
Freddie Robledo has it so right in Pasadena at the Star-News office. He goes to his game, writes his story and then it's on to Old Town Pas for some night life. I've gone with him before and it's a beautiful thing. But at the Trib, all you have is The Well. Anyway, I goofed up this thread by accidentally deleting some posts. I had posted, Reg and anybody else, that I'm looking for a good spot to go to after the games. Preferrably one where I can get a drink, eat salad and hang out. Let me know!
If I can get him to join us, can I bring along Coach Garrison & Randy Bell?
AT,
Spires dinner is the best after a Big M victory. Half a fried chicken dinner and ice cream sundae in a down home environment. It's a great place to sit around and recap a great night on the grid iron.
Hey New York
I like Spires. Plus Aram does too. Furthermore there is a barber shop West of the one on Huntington Drive in Monrovia......
I hope MoHi beats Arcadia and WesCo too. Only time will tell......
Talent, leadership, and a little bit of luck. I think John Wooden said that's what it takes to win the big one. The talent seems to be there. I suppose we will have to wait and see on the other components.
Correct. No team is ever a lock for anything. The game is played on the field where anything can happen. However, if MHS is focused from now through December, with no off-weeks, I would be shocked if they do not run the Rio Hondo as well as the playoffs.
Whatchu wanna know about TC? That I brokered a peace deal between Mooney and Gano at the 2004 playoff draw at CIF offices? It was almost broken and the missiles could've been flying if Dwight Broadnax transferred to Los Altos per the spring/summer rumor mill.
TC is my alma mater, so I hope it does well. But anytime an RHL team has up to four D-1 prospects, it's hard to see that team losing. That's what Monrovia has this season (supposedly). Who knows, the Cats haven't exactly been the most clutch team in the area recently.
Let's talk about some TC. According to Coach Mooney, TC should be tough this year. They have a new lineman transfer, Doug Howard and return many more. M-town might not be a lock for the Rio Hondo.
I can't believe we are even discussing La Canada and West Covina on the same thread.
Regarding the past two games against LC: See my previous comments about people on campus taking their collective eye off the ball as well as BigMLover's comments regarding "off-weeks." While we're on the subject, I'd like to know the aggregate scores of the MHS vs. LC games during the past 12 years. It would not be pretty if you are an LC fan.
Regarding the past two WC games: Perhaps the same people who took their eyes off the ball were also afraid to go against WC, and that fear trickled down to the players. Coach G did some house cleaning in the off season. I hope the new staff is confident in what their players can do. Regardless, MHS has not been playing "M-Town" football the past couple years. If "M-Town" is back this year, then Arcadia and WC had better stand by.
will you guys be putting schedule + analysis for arcadia and when
I wasn't as excited about WestCo's chances before I spoke to Coach Maggiore as I was after. Coach Maggiore isn't about hyperbole and he's never really blown his team up to be something it's not. But some things he said stuck out to me ...
1. New offense - More like what Covina did last year so it takes the pressure off of Munoz to throw deep. Also gives a chance to get ALL of the weapons to get their touches, which could be dangerous.
2. Size/strength - Maggiore singled out some guys as being very good lineman and said this is the physically strongest team he's had. I believe WestCo will have some very good lineman this year, which was a worry for me before.
3. Defense - I really like WestCo's psychotic defensive coordinator and his schemes. The five DBs thing is just great and when you start thinking about the athletes in the secondary, it's obvious the defense will be very good.
There are some more things to mention that will come out in the Trib's football preview issues, but I think WestCo, if it stays healthy, is going make some big noise this year.
Hope your right about how good West Co will be
Aram, but sometimes it makes me a little wary to hear this good talk about them, I know their run game will be good but I hope they will have an air game to balance it out. I know they got the QB so hopefully they'll have a go to reciever or two so teams won't stack the box on them.
South Hills & Rowland will be tough this year and those games will come down to the wire.
Hey, I don't like M-Town's chances in that game because I don't think people realize just how good WestCo is going to be. It's not because I doubt M-Town will be good.
Aram, be optimistic, maybe they'll score this year.
How about LC, 69-6 the past two years. Talk about getting pushed around... The LC v. MHS game will determine the league champ.
Wow, 80-0 the past two years against West Covina. Put that on the bulletin board. The Cats are going to be breathing fire.
A look at MHS the past two years.

Being that I am a Monrovia Fan living in the pasadena area knowing Monrovia football The way that I do I can expect them to beat anyone at any given time. I was at the diamond bar game a few years back when Diamond bar won the Div. 2 championship. Monrovia Had a back by the name of Akil Harris who only a year before was the back-up running back until he made his self known in the Temple City game. But what a lot of people did not know is that the star running back from Diamond Bar was a transfer from Monrovia as well. Both the Wright Brothers who were running backs at that time had a difficult time deciding whether or not to send his sons to live with the mom or try and compete at MHS for what ussually becomes a running back haven. He chose the latter but ended up with the big trophy as a result. During that same year Monrovia traveled up North to play what was one of the best games in the high school Division Championships I have ever witnessed. Losing by a couple of points to Paso Robles. I think that what everyone is say is pretty much correct about the team needing to focus mostly on defense. I think that if Coach Garrison lets them do what they do best and they get a running start on a team like Arcadia, Forget it they wont look back and it could be a big embbarassment for the Apaches. Monrovia Beat WC three years ago when everyone thought that WC had a much better team. Monrovia just flat out had much quicker athletes who can change a game in a heartbeat. I think that If you ask WC that year they just were'nt prepared for the speed. The last two years MHS was trying to get David Potts to work on his QB Skills, his main problem was really his running game. If the Coach lets him lead the team and run the ball like I think he can, I dont think that anyone is capable of stopping MHS offense. They have way too many good qality running backs that could start at any of the high schools in the SGV. Think of Potts 6'4 195 and it brings to mind Vince Young......Ex Muir Fan gone MHS.
Reg, Monrovia vs. San Dimas would be a joke. You have all athletes vs. spoiled non-athletes. San Dimas sucked last year and the team this year is a bunch of JV kids who really never played a varsity snap. Seriously, people might get hurt in this game. I wouldn't want something like that to be on Garrison's conscience. I can't believe you made the statement that this would be a good game. I know you had to be joking. Please! San Dimas: affraid of contact and horrible fundamentally. Monrovia: Not great fundamentally but hey, athletes make coaches look great.
I do not expect most people to do anything other than base their future predictions on anything other than the recent past. I know WC is strong, and they used to be even stronger. They used to be a division two school, right? I think Miguel Merriwether led them to the D-2 semis in 1993. I think they were still D-2 when Monrovia beat them in their first match-up in 1994 (when Monrovia was D-8) and then again in 1995. These were Garrison's early years as a head coach and the program was still learning how to win. I'm not certain how many times the two schools have faced off, but I do know that it has not been that long since Monrovia dominated them during the 2002 season. I thought M-Town and Garrison still had a winning record against West Covina.
I told you that I bleed Green & White. Of course I think M-Town always has a good shot at beating anybody on their schedule. The truth of the matter is that M-Town has the talent pool such that they should always be contenders. This renaissance is a bunch of BS and the need for it is the result of people within the program taking their eyes off the ball during the past few years.
The last time Arcadia and Monrovia met was in the early 90's when Monrovia was going winless in the Rio Hondo. That's clearly not the case anymore. Garrison has wanted these guys for a while. It's time to bring the Bell back.
I may fly out and watch those games with you guys. Dinner at Spires on me if we don't at least split those two games.
A shaved head? We all know that Reg's female fan base wouldn't like that. Wow. The stakes are going up and we haven't even started fall practice.
My confidence in West Covina winning that game has nothing to do with Monrovia not being a good team. I just think that West Covina is a train that some people see coming, but don't know how fast. I spoke to Coach Mike Maggiore and he told me that they're especially strong along the lines. I didn't expect at all to hear this, but he said it and it sounds like the Dawgs are very strong (literally).
Having said that, if Monrovia is a legit CIF title contender, they'll have at least a fighting chance in that game. There will be some awesome athletes on the field that night!
I can alreay tell you I know two games I will be covering this season - 1. M-Town vs. WestCo and 2. CO vs. Glendora.
By the way should the Wildcats beat the Apaches.... I'll shave my head for that one too.
Monrovia should be playing San Dimas instead. Now that would be a great game.
NY:
You bring incredible insight, great points and presence on this blog that AT & I are both appreciative of but I must say you asking for AT to predict a "toss up" between MoHi & WC this year? C'mon man. WC blasted MoHi last year 42-0! I too love Monrovia and think that Coach Garrison is the best however WC is a D7 CIF Championship contender and last I checked MoHI is returning to glory with the renisance thingy AT describes. Sorry but there is no way WC goes down in that game. Should MoHi win that game I'll shave my head or do some other stupid stunt on our show for being wrong.
Go Wildcats.
Go Garrison.
To the best of my knowledge arcadia has not received any kids from Monrovia in recent years. Last good kid from a MHS that moved into Arcadia was about 9 or 10 years ago. Many MHS kids like Potts actually live in Arcadia, but the county part of arcadia that is monrovia school district.
I don't see MHS doing well against Arcadia's skilled offense. Arcadia has a solid group of kids not just one or two stars like bailey & gowan but like the arcadia '02 team that went 10-2 that beat Div. II teams like Rancho Cucamonga that had 4 college div. one kids, like Patrick Chung (oregon), Arvell Spicer(usc), Brian Abraham(ucla), Tyrell Thomas (usc).
If MHS does not start fast out of the blocks, the kids will lose interest fast, like Jesse Canada's junior & senior year.
TY posted the following on the Wilson thread:
"I've seen M-TOWN at a few passing league games this summer, let me tell u, these guys are the real deal. noone on their division should even be close. Also, their lineman were at a lineman challenge at Baldwin Park H.S. and are very athletic and fast. I hear they have a new O.C.,
is this true A.T.?? any insight on this."
The Cats were GREAT at the Bonita tourney, but were quite pedestrian at the Claremont tourney last week. What that usually means is that we are trying to analyse KIDS! They tend to be a bit unpredictable (which makes me grin at your win/loss predictions, AT).
The new OC is Randy Bell, the school's co-AD, and an assistant to Garrison for 10 years. He played QB for the Cats in the early 80s and continued at Santa Barbara City. He likes the 2-back O... so, we should see more max protection and less spread than Cat fans have seen in the past.
Very thorough write-up, AT. But, I wouldn't call the Cats "Overwhelming Favorites" to win the Rio Hondo... not until they show that they can handle TC and LC. Even with strong showings in the preseason, they have stumbled against these two league foes the last three years.
I too am interested in the new "D" for the Cats. They always have tremendous team speed... it's just a matter of getting them in the right positions to make plays.
Arcadia is a game that the Monrovia faithful have wanted for a long time... eh, New York? I hope it lives up to all of our expectations. And I hope that it is a series that stays on the schedule for years to come. I like the addition of La Salle as well. Clifton and Santa Fe (the middle schools that feed MoHi) have sent some quality kids to Arcadia, Duarte and La Salle. With these schools now on the sked, Garrison has the opportunity to showcase his program to the talented kids that he is losing.
La Canada returns Peterson, right? They have a strong team this year. What I am trying to say is that I believe the LC v. M-town might be a toss-up. Everything else is a great estimate.
If I told you that I bleed Green & White, would that be any indication?
However, I still try to be objective in my commentary.
NY,
Davis played his frosh season at Monrovia (frosh team I believe), then transferred to Los Altos where he got the majority of the carries as a soph and was the undisputed feature back as a junior.
I think that LA could've been in trouble without Davis had Ira Thomas not transferred in. From what I hear, Davis left LA because most of his friends graduated. Personally, I think he saw the potential Monrovia had this year and wanted back in. He's a very good player and if he gets behind on the defense, forget it.
NY, refresh my memory, are you an M-Town fan?
Defense wins championships as well as big games. No doubt about that.
Very insightful write-up and fair assessment, although I would prefer to see the WC game as another toss-up.
Was James Davis originally and MHS guy prior to going to LA?
