2006 Wilson Wildcats football schedule + analysis ...
Two seasons have past since Wildcats coach Robert Oviedo led his program to the semifinals of the Division VI playoffs with a team that would've likely walked away with a CIF title in most other seasons (Los Altos def. Orange Lutheran in championship).
Unfortunately for Wilson fans, and you guys remain a good fan base, the team has fallen back on hard times. Granted, 2003's team had some great talent. But going 11-12 the past two seasons just isn't going to cut it, especially after fans got a taste of what it's like to win again.
Fortunately for the Wilson contingent, there not only is talent for a big season, but the coaching staff remains one of the of best in the area.
Wilson had its problems finishing games last season. Many halftime leads were squandered under some often bizarre circumstances. The defense also betrayed the team, allowing over 30 points per game. The offense was one of the best in the area, averaging over 30 points per game.
Wilson entered last season with some unproven skill players and a very good offensive line. The opposite is true this season, minus an established QB. The Wildcats have arguably the area's top overall player in running back/defensive back Daniel Bernal. Receiver Iran Blandon is an explosive target. All-purpose threat Tim Gilmore showed signs of greatness last year as FRESHMAN! Gilmore suffered thru some injuries, but is a player ready to be burst upon the local scene.
If Wilson finds a QB and some form of decent protection and push from its offensive line, the Wildcats could have another year like 2003.
Here's the sked:
Sept 9 - La Puente (win)
Sept. 15 - at Glenn (win)
Sept. 22 - Schurr (win)
Sept. 29 - at Montebello (win)
Oct. 6 - at South El Monte (win)
Oct. 13 - Bonita (win)
Oct. 20 - Diamond Ranch (win)
Oct. 27 - at Los Altos (toss-up)
Nov. 3 - Rowland (toss-up)
Nov. 9 - at Charter Oak (loss)
Projected record: 8-2 or 7-3
Miramonte League: 2nd or 3rd
Playoffs: Likely; darkhorse semifinals contnender.
Wilson's schedule goes from favorable early to insurmountable late. The Miramonte League is going to be ridiculously tough this year with Diamond Ranch joining the fray. A nonleague game against Rowland in the second to last date of the season is no great shake. Playing Charter Oak in the finale with either a league title or playoff positioning on the line is also a big task.
I think Wilson is good enough to beat Los Altos and Rowland. But most likely a split is the safest bet.
It's no secret what Oviedo and Co. will do this year - Bernal is going to get the ball in a myriad of ways with Gilmore and Blandon popped in for big plays when teams key on Bernal. I have no clue who the new QB is, but Oviedo and OC Willig (not sure of his first name or if he's still there) have done a good job developing signal callers.
Wilson is again going to put up major points. The question is whether the defense will give them back just as fast? Put simply, with only improved health and luck, Wilson's defense will be better and that is Oviedo's strength.
This literally is a team where the phrase "anything is possible" aptly applies.

Touched a nerve sh? Why don't you read the post a little clearer. I don't talk about how good West Co is cause I really don't know how good they are going to be, I talked about their strength of schedule compared to other valley teams. If you've read my post throughout this blog I've always said that the games with West Co and South Hill's and Rowland will come down to the wire, the truth is I really don't
know who will win, but thanks for the locker room board material you put up for West Co. hopefully their reading your post. As far as your team putting an end to their season we'll just have to wait and see, keep on talking,
we'll see if you can back up your big talk on the field, and don't be too jealous just because West Co. is getting a little share of the attention this year.
i cant wait for the season to start so we can put a end to west co's season or better yet put closer to all this talk.its making me sick yu win 1 cif in 50 yrs and all of a sudden your the greatest team on earth lol. every yr in high school fb any team can step up it dont matter who yu are its who wants it the most.
I agree with your assesment on Glendora's Sierra league Will, there are some great programs in that league and Glendora's schedule is a tough one but I still say D.Ranch & Amat easily have tougher scheduls than Glendora, remember that the playoff teams you mentioned
like C.Hills, Chino etc. that make the D2 playoffs consistantly lose in the playoffs to the teams on Amat's schedule, and the teams on D.Ranches schedule are of similar caliber to Amats sched.
Glendora's league schedule is a little tougher than West Co's but West Co has a tougher non-league schedule so I think it evens it out between the two.
in glendoras league... Glendora, chino, chino Hills were all CIF D2 participents. Damien also was a contender. Their league alone had a vast portion of the D2 CIF bracket. no other league has a statistic like that.
Da Ranch I forgot about your tough schedule but I still say Amat has the overall toughest schedule in the valley, your preseasons are close with you having Edison, CH.Hill's, Servite, & Oaks C.[who's starters may be the best in the southland this year]. But Amat has just as tough a preseason this year with St. Paul,Valencia, Hart,Rancho C. & Carson, the difference is the league their in which is much tougher than the Miramonte league.
Rob, Glendora's schedule is tough but its clearly easier than the schedules of Amat & D.Ranch. Like I said earlier I think West Co's
schedule is on par with Glendora's I see about 6
big games on both teams schedule & possibly with Ayala it could be 7 on both teams schedule. Also remember that Mater Dei [Week 1] would consistantly be considered an easy favorite over any team on Glendora's schedule.
There is no tougher strength of schedule than Diamond Ranch. They dropped Covina and Northview only to pick up Edison and Oaks Christian and already have Servite. They may go 0-5 in preseason before heading into CO, LA, Bonita and company.
glendora has to play covina, Duarte, Charter oak, Capistrano vally, and rowland. then in their league they play Damien, Chino Hills, Chino, Ayala, and dimond bar. do not say that there is a harder schedule out there.
dan, the only problem with passing league is the game of football is played in pads, most passing leagues are for the birds but i agree with yu except for the nogales team and i here walnut doesnt look that good but than again i guess well see.
Amat by far has the hardest schedule in the valley, I also think West Co's schedule is as tough if not tougher than Glendora's with Mater Dei, Monrovia, Rancho C., Charter Oak, & Ayala.
Then in league they have South Hill's & Rowland.
I also think Nogales will suprise a few teams this year as they looked good at the Bonita Tournament against a highly skilled J.W. North
team, both teams were tied until the last play
of the game where North intercepted for the win.
Also, in West Co's league don't forget that Walnut was a CIF semi finalist [2004] and finalist[2002] not too long ago.
you think that they have a hard schedule, you need to look at glendoras this year. they probly have tyhe hardest in the vally.
I understand why you pick Rowland and Wilson over Bonita, because of athletes. But lets be honest here. Podley does a great job and there is no way Bonita loses more than 2 league games. I know Los Altos and Charter Oak. But seriously, these guys overachieve every year and I am sure they will do it again.
easy a rowland coach its a blog its just good old fashion fun where just trying to light a fire under someones @** ..... god knows they need it sometimes.
A.T. CAN YOU PLEASE POST MY MESSAGE IN THE MONROVIA FOOTBALL COLUMN INSTEAD OF THE WILSON FOOTBALL COLUMN????
Will the Rowland Athletes please shut their mouths! Let your play on the field this fall show your talents. Good teams don't need to do a lot of talking, they let their actions speak for themselves. We had a fine season last year, lets build off of it, not live off of it. Lifting, Speed Training, & Skill Development are all that we need to concentrate on right now! Do your talking in December when the season is over. Now get off the computer and get to work, someone is gaining on you!
I've seen M-TOWN at a few passing league games this summer, let me tell u, these guys are the real deal. noone on their division should even be close. Also, their lineman were at a lineman challenge at Baldwin Park H.S. and are very athletic and fast. I hear they have a new O.C.,
is this true A.T.?? any insight on this.
I agree with Aram, the Seoul players didnt make up the team but they certainly add to a huge loss to the whole defense. Injuries are a part of the game, but they do affect wins and losses, and can sometimes make and break a season. I've been hearing a lot of things about Rowland, (mainly from Rowland players). Rowland isnt the type of school that can just rebuild at anytime like CO, LA, and S-Hills. Well all just have to wait n see how good Rowland really is.
sorry my bad i forgot 2 guys make a whole team i guess i dont know crap
Yeah Joe, players like Reagan and Gorb Seui just fall out of trees around Rowland. What are you guys, South Hills? Two of the school's better defensive players in recent memory just graduated and you're not sweating it. Alright. I have to see this team practice.
im tired of hairing about teams that werent at full strength ,injurys are all part of the game what makes a good team is a team that can play through all those injurys so quit making excuses for those teams that get beat because of injurys or the ones that are so called not a full strength.also the seui brothers were good football players but not that good that yu cant replace them.
Joe,
I don't think Wilson ever had its full strength lineup together for the same game past Week 1. Can any Wilson honks verify this? From what I recall, the Cats were a shell of themselves at that point of the season, yet were still good enough to beat Bonita and reach the playoffs.
I've said before that I'm just not sure how certain you or any Rowland fan can be about the team being better than last year with the Seui twins gone and Burgos gone. So therefore, I don't see how you consider that game anything more than a toss up at this point.
All this Rowland talk has made it so that the Raiders are one of the teams I will visit during August practice. I've got to see if you guys are really going to take a step forward or regress.
how is the rowland vs wilson a toss up last yr rowland crush them and they have that big returning class so mr aram i would like yu to explain where yu get that from especially when wilson is going to have a new qb and by the way rowland was one of the only teams to shut bernal down completely and they well do it again this yr.
You said the defense let some games slip away and that the DEFENSE let the team down.... You mentioned who the OC was (Willig) who is the DC?... Please don't say it's Oviedo....
2006 Los Altos schedule ... please remember this is a Wilson thread, so lets keep the Conq discussion to a minimum. Control yourselves if you can, but if you can't, that's cool too.
Week 0 - South Hills
Week 1 - Rosemead
Week 2 - LB Wilson
Week 3 - Damien
Week 4 - St. Francis
Week 5 - Western
Week 6 - Diamond Ranch
Week 7 - Charter Oak
Week 8 - Bonita
Week 9 - Wilson
Week 10 - BYE
aram-Wilson will definetly lose to Los Altos and Charter Oak and probably Bonita-by the way, could you please e-mail me the Los Altos football schedule?-thanks.
I heard the offensive lines on Covina and Glendora are pretty good. Who are some key blockers protecting the QB's.
Honestly Aram I think you may be giving Wilson a little more credit then they deserve. They will run away with their non-league schedule starting 5-0, but they will have problems when league comes around. I have no doubt they will lose to Charter Oak and Los Altos, and they will have trouble againsed Rowland and Bonita. At best they will be a solid 8-2, if that. Wilson has great skill players and speed, but with no line DL/OL and an unproven quarterback they will have a hard time against physical teams. Bernal & Blanton are good but I cant see them making plays when their o-line is most likely gonna get dominated.
Aram please post Diamond Ranch's schedule n talk about their game aginst Oaks Christian with Clausen, Tyler n Jones.
Wilson's Pre-Season this year should not be enough to save Oviedeo's job over there at Wilson. Maybe going 5-0 then 0-5 is not the best way to schedule your teams season... They have great skill, but no heart, Plus they lost 2 coaches from their strength positions... Lewis (Running Backs to Citurs)and White (Rosemead Defensive Coordinator)... Plus being known around the Valley to practice more hours a day then wins in a season is not that smart....
