PRESEASON: Top 10 receivers in the SGV ...

| | Comments (37) |

I feel bad, but I can't find action shots of these guys ... trust me though, JJ also plays receiver.

Covina receiver/defensive back #4 Jamal James

Receiver has been a deceptively strong position for Valley football teams in recent years. This year is no different. So much of what any receiver can do is contingent upon having a good QB. That's why you'll find that many of the guys who made this list also just so happen to have a teammate on the Top 10 QBs list. Glad I could provide the obvious statement of the day.

1. Michael Johnson, Charter Oak - Hands down the best D-1 prospect in the area.

2. Jamal James, Covina - All of Covina's explosiveness tihs season comes down to JJ. No pressure, though.

3. Travis Eschardies, Damien - Around Damien, "hooking up" means Mendrun-to-Eschardies.

4. Rex Foss, Los Altos - No longer playing second fiddle, Foss will put up big #s as the Conqs' No. 1 target.

5. Iran Blandon, Wilson - Outstanding breakthrough season in '05, Blandon will do even more this year.

6. Jordan Edmond, Glendora
- Not quite sure if he'll get carries or catch passes. But Edmond needs to handle the ball more often this year.

7. Nic Curry, South Hills - Part of a very mysterious Huskies' offense, as it currently stands. I think Curry is going to see time at WR. One of the SH honks around here please help.

8. Jon Joe, San Dimas - It's hard to see J-2 stuck in a Wing-T offense, but hey, the program is clean.

9. Mark Gutierrez, Mountain View - Most people will know Gutierrez's name by season's end - not just track followers.

10. Tommy Cogburn, South El Monte - Tipped his hand last year while scouring for PT, Cogburn should be used in a myriad of ways for the Eagles.

NOTE: Eugene Palmer, formerly of Diamond Ranch, would've made this list, but I heard he transferred to Muir. Maybe he didn't like the Panthers' schedule.

Travis E. deserves a new look ( from recruiters and fans ). Great off season. The kid can flat out get after it, on Offense we know , but watch the picks add up for this free safety ball hawk. Travis is just a baller! But don't forget the soph. burner, Taylor Herrera, remember the name. This kid is the real deal. Hands, speed and runs the sweetest skinny post this side of Isaac Bruce. Tall talk for sure but 20 years of coaching says he pushes Travis to new heights and plays on Saturdays. No more doubling Travis, Mendrum just became a two fisted fighter. Welcome to the show!

any idea on when the LB top ten is going to be made available???

TY said:

First of all, the times are stupid and not very realistic. but on a serious note, Rex Foss is another Baldwin Park kid. Looks like Gano is back in rare form........

Rex Foss hugh... a 7 second 100 meter dash you say? wow. he beat the world record by almost 2 seconds. get real

Matt Lienhart said:

Rex Foss will tear tear the miramonte league a new one. he is quick off the line and only gets quicker as he goes. his 40 time is 1.2 seconds with a 7 second 100 meter dash

T.O. said:

South Hills did win the championship beating Diamond Ranch, but it was a freshman tourny.
other schools were, B.P., COVINA, NORWALK, BOSCO TECH, AZUSA, S.EL MONTE. it was a good tourny to watch. South Hills beat B.P. 30-24 in one semi, and Diamond Ranch beat Covina 28-14 in the other semi.

Did anyone see the Azusa passing tournament
this morning[Sat.the 22] I heard South Hills took the championship, how many teams were there
and did the Huskies have to beat any good teams
to win the title?

onda_island said:

If your going talk about linebackers you gotta say Ricky Montoya from Baldwin Park! 6'1 245 124 tackles last year and 5 sacks. being recruited by colorado, colorado st., ASU. All valle vista league 1st team, nuff said.

Aram said:

Haha, I do have a soft spot, but it's for dark-haired women, apple fritters and Petrillo's pizza.
I put Gutierrez on the list because I legitimately believe he's one of the top receivers in the SGV. Also, I think that MV will beat more than El Monte. They could beat South El Monte, Gabrielino and the afforementioned Lions, thus making the playoffs! How great would that be? Gabrielino's downfall has opened the door for any of the MVL's other three teams to join Arroyo and Koffmead in the big dance.

Ralph said:

I'm not saying he won't open eyes. THe kid is fast. But okay they'll beat el monte. They are excited because they might beat cross town rival and that is it. There are other great wide receivers out there. But good for you for having a heart and thowing Mountain View a bone. Aram, you do have a soft spot. Cool.

Aram said:

Say what you want, but this is the most excited they've been at Mountain View about a season or two players in a while. Good for them. I think Gutierrez will open some eyes this season. He's going to embarrass some people. Hopefully it leads to more MV wins.

Ralph said:

The list looks pretty good, but lets be real. You can't put a Mountain View guy on the list. Sorry, he might be fast but you can't put a Mountain View guy on any list. No offense, but until they win some games, they don't deserve anything. I can think of kids at other schools who would fit. Covina has another receiver to compliment JJ. The kid is about 6'1 and big.

Some Glendora linemen are Preston Hoppers, Jared McGarry, Brendan Holmes, and Austin Sefton.

AM,

I don't mind discussing any school from any part of the country. My in-depth knowledge decreases the further away from my coverage zone the discussion gets.
I know quite a bit about the Star-News schools because I follow many of the teams from that area even though I don't write about them. That's the area of the Valley I grew up in and live in, so I follow it.
I'm hopeful that the writers in charge of those two zones of our company will soon get their own blogs so fans of those schools can get their fill.

AM said:

Aram, just a quick thought. I know I'm not discussing the topic at hand, but this has to be said. You give much love to the teams in the SGV and rightfully so; they deserve it and you have the chance to cover them the most. You also give props to the schools in the Pasadena area although not as much as the SGV schools.
But where is the love for the Whittier area schools. I could be wrong, but the only coverage I've seen about a Whittier school on this blog was the St. Paul baseball team getting in a fight.
Now don't be too quick to say that SGV and Pasadena teams are ridiculously better. La Mirada, La Habra and Santa Fe have been contenders for CIF championships in recent years while El Rancho and St. Paul boast huge football traditions that are paralleled by few schools in Southern California. By the way The Ranch and St. Paul will play each other this year which renews a SUPER HUGE rivalry.
Take note about the Whittier area schools. I guarantee even more people will look at this site. After all the Whittier Daily News is part of your company too.

Aram said:

Anthony Hile is on the list. This is a very good group.

Uncle AL said:

Aram if you are working on linebackers i am sure Anthony Hile of Damien will be high on your list. He lead all juniors in the very tough Sierra league last year in tackles and was Damiens leading tackler. Also making all league

Mike said:

Aram,
Along with the o/d-line i think you should do a strength of schedule it would be good

steve said:

i agree we need an offensive linemen breakdown. You have all these great skill players ranked an bilboarded...they couldnt function without the linemen down in the trenches.

Aram said:

O-Line and D-Line will be very hard to do, but if it happens it will be closer to mid-August when I can talk to all the coaches. I might just do unit ranking for those spots and not individuals. I am working on linebackers and DBs right now.

Ralph said:

Aram. Do we get a breakdown on offensive linemen?

M Mend 07 said:

Forget about all of those other guys like Jones and Johnson, Travis Eschardies is the best guy on this list hands down he is big, fast, strong, agressive n a train. He will start at wr and get most of the balls n he will play a lot at safety. So watch out for Travis to be a standout on O and D!!!!!!!!!

BigMLover said:

Are u going to have a separate discussion on TEs? If not, Eric Brooks belongs on this list.

The TE from Monrovia is ranked #80 in CA for all positions by Rivals.com. He is also being wooed by the Sun Devils (http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news?slug=rivals-35889&prov=rivals&type=story_recruiting)
With the addition of Davis in the backfield, the Cats should run more this season, but that doesn't deminish the effectiveness or value of Brooks.

Aram said:

Look at P-Chase man-ning up saying the Rowland passing game is going to crank this year because his arm strength is improved. Way to bring it. I hope u make your boy look good. Don't worry baller (pronounced uh), we're watching you.

chase #6 said:

yeah i know Rowland isnt known for their passing game but thats been mostly my fault cuz i havent had the arm strength but this year i do and im telling u leonard moreno is unknown right now but go to a couple of our passing leagues and youll see how good he is. just to give u a little hint about his talent his cousin is sergio leon. the guy is just a beast im telling u i hope you keep this blog to look back on after the season because hes gonna be very well known by then. I PROMISE

footballfan said:

i go to all of the Glendora passing leage games an realy only see one reciever, mason segura. at the clarmont 7 on 7 tournament, he had 23 catches for over 150 yards with 4 touchdowns. that steve kid you talk about doesnt have the heart to play football. in fact, i think that was his first. mason works much harder and it shows.

tom said:

Hey aram a little information on these three kids from glendora.

Mason segura- good hands but isnt very physical.

Kyle kunka- questionable for this year has a torn acl. has okay hands but he is kinda physical

Stephen chakeiren- Great hands and hight and is physical. i think he is glendoras go to reciever.

I was there said:

hey aram do you have any information on these three kids from glendora? Mason Segura, Stephen chakerien, and Kyle kunka? would like to know more about them cuz i heard they are pretty good thanks

KnightStalker said:

Marcos Sanchez from Arroyo has been tearing up teams this summer. His play on defense at FS and on offense at WR will make him on of the top players in the MVL. Based on everything I have seen he is a top 10 candidate... and he has a very good qb that will get him the ball. Go to South Hills on Tuesday and watch. South Hills - Los Osos - Colton & Arroyo.

Aram said:

ooh nice, a sleeper. Never heard of him. I am going to do a list on the top players nobody's ever heard of who will have breakout years. It's all hyperbole until it happens, but it's nice to just get some names out there.

I was there said:

Aram,

I keep hearing about this kid from Glendora named Mason Segura do you have any information?

joe said:

were in the hell is leonard moreno from rowland i know he can play with any of these guys.

DHS4LIFE said:

AT you are way wrong Travis is way better than Jones of Covina he had more yds, tds, and catches. Also you shgould put him ahead of that "little whisper johnson" who was only a whisper last year and never was go to in their offense, Travis had more catches n tds than him. Travis is a huge target with big time leap n a college ready body. Watch out for the combination of Mark Mendun n Travis Eschardies to take the Spartnans to a league championship n maybe more!!!!

SidelineCoach said:

If Eschardies can catch it, Mendrun sure can throw it. Ask the guys catching his passes, they are all wearing X's on their chests.
