Bishop Amat vs. St. Paul ...
Some rivalries I understand, and some I don't ...

Aram needs a history lesson ...
... Don't get me wrong, I felt the intensity at last year's game and I liked it. But honestly, I don't get it, when/where/why did this become such a big rivalry?
I've been told by Amat people "You just don't understand, this rivalry is as big as it gets." You're right, I don't understand. What the heck made it so big? They're both Catholic schools. Do you think other rivalries of common interest i.e. Tarbut V'Torah vs. Valley Torah or Mesrobian vs. Holy Martyrs Armenian has the same blood stakes to it?
Maybe there are other people out there like me, who don't fully understand the depth of this rivalry. Will some Lancers or Swordsmen please explain?

THe amat-StPaul rivalry became big because they were born at the same time. They both rose to be SoCal powers at the same time. That is why They were put together with mater Dei SErvite Loyola. THey just became a bigger rivalry because they share a region. The same for the Servite-MaterDei rivalry. It was also fueled by big games like the 1981 leauge championship game.\
Great rivalry game last night, Carrillo has a decent arm. There were two touch passes he made and were dropped, possible TD's. Give St. Paul credit down 6-20 they kept coming. Moralles is a good hitter but he didn't look like he was used to the big hitters. I think the running back rfrom St. Paul is one of the best that I have seen in many years. Note to St. Paul coach get your running back a form fitting jersey and give him a break on defense some time, he was dead at the end and still almost made game winning play to end the game. The jersey was out most of the game and it was what brought him down at times. It was the last thing that the Defense could grad onto and they did. As for Amat, they need some work on special teams. I don't think the long snapper got on to the punter. But a great rivalry game, packed house again.
Amat - Los Altos rivalry? Maybe a Amat - Charter Oak rivalry? After Amat's Bienemy single handedly destroyed LosAltos in the 80's and last 2 years drubbin of Charter Oak... it is no wonder these schools do not want to schedule the Lancers, hence no chance of such a SGV rivalry. It is what it is, Lancers will dominate any school in the SGV, and that is why there are so many anti amat mongers out there.
DENNIS MALDONADO stop your hate towards ST PAUL you sound jealous. I know you know a few kids from St Paul very well including ME. There is no way St Paul should be playing D-1 when they only have about 300 male students at the school.
Does anyone recall a few amat guys trying to bleach the St Paul football field during the 02-03 season?
Aram, I am looking forward to Thursdays edition of the tribune sports section. Yes! prep football finally ready to take off. One of the reasons I suscribe to the tribune and not the Times is because of the local prep sports coverage. Especially football season........Good job. GO AMAT!...
AMAT73, You are right Amat vs Los Altos would be great for the local community and we do know why it doesn't happen.
Amatwillshine, You missed Benett from last year. UCLA
Bluorca, The slime thing, you are right. When our bus landed in 1978 at St. Paul my freshman year with 90 players and coaches on one bus and got off the stench was something you do not forget. I remimber the coaches saying that is why we need to beat the St. Paul Slime.
Dennis, we no longer play Mater Dei and Servite. Those teams got together to form the Orange County league but they included Bosco (LA County Team) with the addition of Orange Lutheren and J. Sierra next year. The word was for transportation reasons, I personally will miss those games, I have a lot of respect for those programs. St. Paul of old would have taken the challenge and stayed in D-1.
As for the AMAT loyalists, I hear that they are looking good, I hear Wagner is tearing it up. Lets hang on for the ride.
You probably have to be alumi to understand the bad blood between Amat and St. Paul . The history between these 2 schools goes way back and it does not just pertain to football . You have to understand we were in the same league for many years and the wars on the football field would carry over to all other sports. We would love to have local rivalries with schools in the valley but they have only recently started to play us and you can see what happens to them . Example Charter Oak and Glendora. You would think Amat vs. Los Altos would be a great rivalry but it doesn't happen . Can you guess why ? Either way it's our game and we love it because it brings out the fire and pride we both have for our schools.
The simple fact is, the rivalry got started because both schools opened at the same time. They were the closest Catholic co-ed schools to each other, so they naturally leagued together. The rest is history.
Caballero, is that all you have?. this is a blog where we talk football not slam each other. Surprised Aram let that thru. lets keep it to football and the Big Game. Its good to find out how both teams are shaping up from a outsiders point of view leading into this critical first game for both teams. I guess if you are a my space fan that shows where your mind is. Definitley not on Football. Thanks bluorca for the that history on both schools...makes sense where "Da Slime" originated. Amat will Shine Sept. 1st.
No I don't have a problem with the way you handle your beat. I think you do a fantastic job and this blog is an example that your readers are connecting with you. I was talking in general terms about how I believe in being objective in the press, though it seems you have a good handle on your assignment. Can't wait to meet you as well, and the rest of the tribunes stringers and staff, After all, we're all going to be in the same "team" sort of speak.
the amat-st.paul rivalry goes back to the sixties. It has been one of the biggest rivalries in so. calif. Unfortunately the reason that it was discontinued is because the schools were put in different leagues. St. Paul refuses to play div. 1 which they should. St. Paul is the school that stopped the rivalry. The only reason they are playing now is that the schools signed a 2 year contract for presason game. Come on St. Paul stop chickening out, go to div. 1 and play amat every year along with servite and mater dei!
I am so proud of the players from Amat that have gone to the next level. They seem to be getting the attention they deserve. If you get a chance, look at the rosters and media guides on the athletic websites:
Jonathan Cornell - Ole Miss
Vincent Federico - University of New Mexico
Tony Valenzuela - Iona College
Go Lancers!!
Even God herself puts on her Royal Blue and Gold jersey and shows up when the AMAT DOGS battle the ST. PAUL SLIME!!! These are the rivalry rumors a former Lancer remembers from way back when. They are probably NOT true (and I'm too lazy to look it up but ya'll can...) but they were rumors that were very common thoughout the Amat student body when I attended there. 1. The schools were built at the same time making them "sister" schools and therefore instant rivals because they were almost mirrors of each other in all aspects. 2. The very first football game (or scrimmage) played by both schools was againts each other. It was a freshman game which St. Paul won..BOO!. 3. St. Paul High was built in a former landfill which made all Swordsmen instantly slimy...hence...DA SLIME! 4. St. Paul used to constantly destroy Amat in the 60s/70s beating my mighty Lancers like "dogs"...dirty dogs that had no game. Simple names for each other compared to now but this was the 60's people! =) 5. The mascots are also similar which fuels the rivalry as well...A Lancer that dismounts from his steed becomes a Swordsmen and vice versa. This is all I can think of for now but I know there were other rumors/ incidents, etc. As I had said earlier, there are just old fun rumors that have stood the test of time. I would love to hear of any other rumors like this or any input on anything I have written. I asked my Magic 8-ball if the Dogs were gonna beat the Slime this year and it responded with a steady "YES"
WHO..WHO WHO WHO WHO!!! WHO LET THE DOGZ OUT!?!?!
Its good stuff quality game. Hahah slime I love it. Cant wait. Should be good there will be some key differences to this years St Paul team that have been missing in the past. A passing game for example we have a nice looking qb and 2 stud recievers. Should be a good one....
Hey jmoney & Ba 24/7. why dont't u 2 go out on a date or something ? U 2 should hook up on my space !
Yeah, we lost some good seniors from last year and I am sure you had your crop too. This I agree very intresting for both new coaches, no one want to start their season with a loss especially these two coaches. Grigsby reminds me allot of Amats last year senior Johnathan Cornell whom is playing at I believe Mississippi St. this season. I know exactly where that eye clinic is right by the post offfice. I think I have seen his ad in our program before. We do have some seniors that can bring it but there will be some juniors that have cracked this starting line up this year. We started a Sophmore in our secondary last year and this year he even looks better. Not over powering or strong but just knows how to play the game from a intelligent standpoint. It is always good to see kids from our areas make it to the next level on a fooball Schollie so we can track their progress in college. For Jo Mo it is not so far fetched. No one thought Vincent Federico (last years Amat defensive lineman)would go on to play college ball but at the end he ended up a New Mexico Lobo........Games are won in the trenches and O lines and D lines are where the real game to me is played because that dictates scoring. It will be intresting if your O line is big and quick this year because Amats Dline is pretty big and quick this year. Makes for a intresting matchup.........Dude I am pysched for next Friday. It is going to really get going as far as build up come Monday.......I am already hearing St. Paul slams around campus and school has not even begun.......one of the slams is calling you guys "SLIME"..pretty funny what they come up with.........I would say a 1 toughdown favorite to Amat but not 2.
I am sure Amat is about a 2 score favorite at least. They had quality young teams at Amat last year and should be up for the game this year. I will be there tommorrow watching the blue gold frosh game. I know some kids on that team and enjoy watching them play. The irony of this story is my wifes entire family went to Amat and her dad is still very much involved in helping out the community. He owns the Eye clinic on Amar and Hacienda by KFC and Washington Mutual Dr Ed Hernandez. man he loves your school. Can you believe we live right down the street from Amat. Talk about torure for me, uuurggghh. LOL. He even wants my kids to go there man that is gonna be interesting when it comes down to it. Well anyway they look pretty good not great but solid. Around 6-7 new kids and they look hungry. Our RB Grigsby is a man on a mission and ready to take down anyone in his path. Our line looks really big and strong not fat for once, lol. Should be interesting. With all the offseason ocurrences at both schools this game is a guarantee make or break for the new coaches. Manb its gonna be a great one..Vague discreption but I will feed you more after the blue white game at SP. Oh and Morales from SOuth El MOnte got to meet him and he is a class act kid real class kid. Saw him bringing the wood on the Oklahoma drill he told me he was having difficulty picking up the speed of the game but as of today he has it down packed. He is a great kid I hope he gets the schollie he wants, kid deserves it.
SGV Athlete - Amat being D-1 and having by far the biggest fan base/readership in the area is only a small part of it. I construct my coverage with a plan in mind. There is timing to everything and right now one of the biggest rivalries in SoCal is getting set to take place locally with Amat playing St. Paul. Nobody on this site knows what coverage is coming next, but I can assure that I'm aware there's more than Amat in my coverage zone.
Ariel - You're going to be covering games for us this year? I can't wait to meet you. That's great, because if something about the way I handle my beat is "troubling" you, I'll be right in the same office to help you figure it out. Can't wait!
JMoney it is going to be a good game. We had a good team last year and may have done damage in the playoffs had we not lost that damn coin flip. We had come off impressive wins over Loyola and Mater Dei....but that was last year. This year talent wise I think we are better than last year altho some may disagree. Youth is my concern here. These guys are young but they are quick and can play from what I can see. Can they hold up all season long is the question. How is St. Paul stacking up.?
Ariel, the only reason Aram focuses on AMAT so much is because it is the only D1 school in the entire valley. Honestly, if i was a journalist and there was only one team that has the amount of tradition and prestige AMAT has, i think i would focus on them a little bit more than others.
So here are the stats on 'The Rivalry'
AMAT leads the Series 23-14-2
Between the two schools there have been:
33 League Championships,
17 CIF Championship appearances, and
8 CIF Championships.
And that’s just in Football. This rivalry stretches way beyond football. This is goes into Basketball, Soccer, and Baseball. I remember during the 2002 soccer season a full out brawl in the middle of the field at AMAT. These two schools do not like each other. Sports Illustrated said it best by naming this rivalry one of the top ten rivalries in the nation. It does not matter if both teams went 1-9, as long as one team beats the other, the winning team's whole season is worth it. USC vs. UCLA can't hold this rivalry's jock-strap.
RIVALRY WEEK, gotta love it...
I don't think journalists should favor one team over another they cover. I know that we are all human and we all have teams we prefer, but reporters are supposed to be for the most part unbiased and impartial are they not? I find Aram's focusin on Amat a bit troubling, but I am new here so I will reserve my opinions until further research is done.
Has anyone seen LONGARO ???? I'm getting worried ! He has'nt called me !
I hear that BA 24/7 its all good brotha. Its all fun and games just a little banter. You know I am just hoping it is close this year. You guys better not run us over like last year, I admit we got whoopped, lol. So how is Amat looking this year???
JMoney, you did get under my skin........all good tho....may the best team win Sept 1st....I cannot wait. what a way to kick off the season. This season's schedule for Amat is brutal. they will be in a dog fight every week. Go Big Blue!
Let the thread above be an indicator to those of you who wonder about why certain teams dominate the discussion on this site. I see no comments about Bassett. What, are all the Bassett fans in Hawaii with the team? Some fan bases are bigger than others, and some fan bases are gigantic. Believe me, I know what I'm doing.
I have to defend Aram as well regarding all of the amat coverage. Let me put it to you this way, home much coverage does the minor leagues get in baseball? Home much coverage does DII or DIII get in college football? Do I need to go on? The fact remains, Amat is and will forever be the class of the SGV. Enough Said!
As for the rivalry between the lancers vs swordsman, let me see if I can sum it in just a few lines. Both schools were founded on the same morals and values which is what makes the rivalry so special and what it is today. Such things as socio-economic backgrounds, geographic locations, kids growing up together, epic games (see johns post), fights between parents and kids, but more importantly, students caring about their respective schools and each other. It is very difficult for people that were not directly involved with the schools or programs to understand. The only downfall is that the game is now the first game of the year as opposed to the final game to win the league championship. So grab a seat and enjoy one of the best games you will see all year.
I'm a parent of an Amat player and I wanted to thank other parents & alums for answering the questions regarding the rivalry. Aram is just asking a question that current parents may not know. I sent my son to Amat because of the great traditons, academics, the football program, and other reasons. Some of us parents & players really don't know about the rivalries and past history of Amat Football. It's good to read the positive comments and it reminds me why I sent my son to Amat. Dispite all the negative comments about any players or coaches, Amat Fans still remain loyal and classy! At every practice there's still is a large amount of fans, students, parents, alums watching. Love us or HATE US The haters can call it what they like I'm glad I'm apart of this. Go Amat
St Paul used to be there more constant winner back in the 60s and 70s. St Paul won in 81 and didnt win again till either 99 or 2000. And they won in either 2002 or 2003. Amat has the series advantage and they won the last 2 meetings. It is a great rivalry our senior year it came out as top 5 highschool football rivalries in Sports Illustrated. Pretty cool stuff. I love getting under Amats skin those damn dogs, lol. But I truly respect them as a school and program it is a great game.....
aram dude stick with amat if you start talking about workman or walnut this website is gonna turn into trash!....best rivalry in the valley los altos-charter oak
It is Garfield v.s. Roosevelt type classic. Most Alumni have family on both sides and most existing students and players have family on both sides. Fathers, mothers, uncles, brothers...this is as good as it gets....It is all good for bragging rights at the table over the holidays.
Has Amat dominated the all-time series? That would make sense to me, at least the most recent games ... 80s, 90s and whatever has happened this decade.
It's North vs. South....it's legacy vs. legacy...it's our turf vs. their's...it's all about bragging rights. Ask Mater Dei how they feel about playing Servite...you'll get the same answers.
This rivalry goes back to the 70's, there were the great clashes that happened every year. It was always the last league game and the winner would be league champs (Angelus). There were those epic games such as the 1981 4 OT game with 12000 + fans jammed into the PIT. These games have always been the hardest fought games and they were intense. But as for the Catholic School issue, whenever one or the other would make it to the Division Championship game the other would be their biggest supporter. This is probably the biggest rivalry in the Valley if not SOuthern California. Even last year the amount of people jammed into Kiefer Stadium was out of the ordinary, and Aram you stated that you where there, than you saw it. Some people may say that was the past but at the Catholic Schools, the past alumni support is what makes tradition what it is. This is why along with skepticism with the Verdi hiring there is excitement to see the tradition restored. Not many people realize that former Coach Mark Parades played at St. Paul in the 70's (not his fault) and was a very successful coach at AMAT in the lated 80's. But even with him as a coach he kept the rivalry going and strong.
Aram, I've got no conspiracy theory against you. I always enjoy reading your artilces in the saturday paper about amat. You seem to have been the lone supporter of amat as a writter. The Times bailed on amat after they stopped winning championships. Everthing they ever have to say about amat is negative. Back to this topic, "scholar at" is right. Maybe you can do some research before asking questions.
"sh", C'umon man...Walnut or Workman? Not to bang on their programs, but they are not exactly SGV powerhouse schools. Amat is on here many times because first of all they are the D1 representative of the SGV, second of all there is a new head coach and along with it comes new hype, and third It would seem that right now they have the largest fan base on here and have had the most responses. Unfortunately Aram cannot cover every single high school in the SGV. It would seem that he covers the schools whith a lot of hype surrounding the season: Amat, CO, Glendora, Bonita, Demien, WesCO, South Hills... Look at it this way, its nothing against the smaller programs, it is what it is. Again, good luck to every team representing the SGV this season.
Go Lancers....
Why question it? It is what it is. Enjoy it for what it is. A game that gets both sides fired up for the season. Every team has got an intense rivalry with someone and sometimes it is forgotten why. Amat happens to be geographically close to St. Paul and I'm sure many of these kids have played against or with each other since Pop Warner.
Dude, what is it with you and Amat? I've only recently started reading this blog and you seem to spend a lot of time on Amat and it doesn't all seem to be positive or it is like you are looking for something.
If you are going to discuss rivalries lets hear some stuff about some of the other schools you cover. There are some pretty good programs in the SGV that no one knows about and could use the ink you use on your Amat rants.
Do your research then ask questions. Back copies of sports illustrated will help. Also Old football programs.
aram, im sick of hairing about amat my god who gives a sh... about amat there are so many other teams in sgv move on dude besides if carrillo is the qb there done ,season is over before it starts.every other topic is about amat talk about workman or walnut or someone but no more amat until they redeam them selfs from last yr.
Stop with the conspiracy theories. I just want to know what makes this rivalry so unique? Have there been some epic games I don't know about? I am 30 years old and have no clue about it. All I know is that the teams didn't play for a while until last year and experiencing what I experienced last year, I want to know what makes this tick? Why did they stop playing anyway? Maybe there are other people out there like me. Maybe some young people just don't know. If people aren't comfortable answering the quesion, then don't. Good luck to you, SD and your way of thinking.
Aram, as an amat alumni I can say this: the rivalry is what it is and unfortunately you are fishing for a story you are never going to find the roots to. Its the same kind of rivalty as the dodger vs giants, sox vs yankees, kings vs ducks....It is what it is. Aram you seem to be trying to stir up the pot even more with this thread. I would urge any lancer not to speculate on this thread or think real hard about what you post on hear.
