PRESEASON: Last Trib Top 10 before the first Trib Top 10 (huh?) ...
Should West Covina be No. 1? Or is No. 2 too high?

This is the final Tribune Top 10 until the 2006 Football Preview issue hits racks, driveways and bathroom floors on August 31. There could be changes between now and then, depending on what I come up with in my research and practice visits.
Early August Tribune Top 10 ... with sick humor built in.
1. Charter Oak - Charter Oak isn't a city, but it might be after this season.
2. West Covina - Spread offense has been implemented, as has William Wallace's repaired knee cartilage.
3. Los Altos - Can anybody translate what "We're gonna be OK" means. That's what my job is like. The more I hear about LA, the better the Conqs sound.
4. Damien - Offense should put up more points per game than the head cheerleader tallies in text messages in one day - around 30. Wait, is there a head cheerleader at Damien?
5. Covina - The Colts repeating as Valle Vista champs is as certain as 10-East traffic after 1 p.m. on a weekday.
6. Rowland - Could put the hurt on WestCo or South Hills, maybe both.
7. Bishop Amat - The news on Amat this summer is like the rumors a high school senior hears about his ex-girlfriend over the summer - not good. We'll see.
8. South Hills - This team needs time like somebody seeing a BJ's menu for the first time. You want pizza? You want fish n' chips? You want the waitress's phone number? You want Parham or Lamaison at QB?
9. Wilson - If there's room for two Sam Woo BBQs in Hacienda Heights, then there's room for two good football teams.
10. Arroyo - One carne asada fries, a 10-horsepower Cessna flying too close and a Partida-to-Sanchez TD pass, please.
Glendora gets the boot for Arroyo. Bonita is also on the cusp. As are Rosemead and Diamond Ranch. This Top 10 won't be easy, but it will be fun to put together.
Post your own Top 10 ... or keep it to yourself. I don't care. Just be prepared for one of the best ever seasons in SGV history!

outstanding post! great advice, will take on board!
myself and two freinds attended week 1 @ covina on 9/7 and the pitt and c/o game 9/8. we will say spartens bubble busted and hearts broke, and just blitz charter oaks big O line, and stop #48 on glendora's defense. could this be the beginning of the end for a sports writer who just guesses on his picks or are we to intelligent for h.s. football.
Coaches and players are developed. Can we all agree on that? Damien never lacks personnel (size or speed), heart or discipline. What they've lacked recently is a solid coaching staff, top to bottom. This year they are woefully under staffed at the JV level.(read- Next year's varsity) Last year's Freshmen staff was a joke! Coaches showed up sporadiacly TO PRACTICES AND GAMES !( Coach Aaron)- They were unorganized (Head Coach Thompson,Coach Chris and Coach Farrar) and petty(Coach Hernandez,Coach Pucci, Coach Brewster) and who suffered the players. This is the third Freshmen Head Coach in 3 years! The third JV Coach Head Coach in 3 years! Maybe I'm out of the loop but is that normal? Morrison/Damien really needs to get a handle on developing a quality junior coaching staff. Maybe its the money or other internal restraints on Morrison and he's trying but with the size , money and history of Damien someone's asleep at the helm. My two cents.
You have to be kidding me with all these comments about Damien's Defense. John Caroll is one of the leagues toughest D-Coordinators to plan against, and this year he has more tools than most are seeing. Damien will record two shutouts in route to a league and possible C.I.F. championship.
Damien is going to be a great team this year everyone knows about thier offence but their D is great to
Hey Aram,
How about a weekly online poll for top ten sgv teams to see how the stack up to all the other top ten lists ?
damien should be number 1! three reasons
1.mark mendrun
2.travis eschardies
3.phenom sophmore receiver
I think you need to take another look at glendora they have crook who is very underratted and being backed by butler and edmond is only gunna make him better .....there defense is inexperienced but has the guys to do the job i think there defense is also very underrated
You guys are entitled to your opinions. I think you're way off. Maybe there's an axe to grind. I like talking to Lou or Dom Farrar and I think they have the hardware to prove they're doing just fine as a coach/coaching staff. I am not going to censor people's comment unless they get too abrasive, but I think most of us can tell the difference between a legit argument and somebody blowing steam.
coalumni, you are 100% correct. C.O. folks you need to take the blinders off and see what is really going on. Your being robbed, great talent and horrible coaching. Aram, if I leave a turd in the toilet long enough, does that make it "Legendary?"
Jeremy Mater Dei isn't the team you want to give locker room material to, Get your team together & hit the weights & practice field hard and prove it on the field not on here on this board, you guy's have some potential this season so pull together as a team & experience this season together, do it for one another without the talk. Good luck this year I'll be at every game watching you guy's, go Bulldogs!
hey mater dai just telling you guys to watch out because don't think your just going to roll over west covina be prepared for a fight .
wow coalumni those are some harsh comments dominic farrar must have really done you wrong you spoke very strongly about the offense and tight end production the real question is were you a part of the offense or were u the bitter over looked 4th string mop up tight end
If you are going to call out a family like that, you better be willing to say who you are..I'm not totally disagreeing with what you have to say, but wow, don't hide behind a computer screen and publicly call someone out like that...thats pretty weak buddy
Charter Oak will never be successful unless "Big Lou" and his "family" step down and let someone else take over the program. His son, Dominic is the worst offensive coordinator in the valley. He has all the athletes and speed in the world and he always runs between the tackles. What about some plays to the outside. Try and throw to the tight end more often or run some screen plays. They probably don't throw to the tight end, because when Dominic was tight end in 1989 he could never catch the ball. Hell, he couldn't even block my Grandma on the defensive line on the other side of the ball. Gee, I wonder how he made it to the Charger Hall of Fame or became offensive coordinator? Um, Dad. He couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag. Lou, you need to step down and retire already so a new era at Charter Oak can be established. Charter Oak School board give the head coaching position to either Roger Lehigh or Joey Strycula. What happened to Roger Armijo, he's Lou's godson and had enough of Lou's controlling methods so he left his staff to coach girls basketball. Come on, Roger was one of the best linebackers in 1989 he led the valley in solo tackles that year and Lou didn't even help him out in order to attend Division 1 colleges. Now, he hangs out with coach Podley from Bonita at hero's Pub in La Verne. I wonder what they talk about?
To be a part of the top ten is a honor when yu look at how many schools there is but we will have to what and see what all these coaches have to say when aram gets out to talk to them there is so much false hope on this blog but its alot of fun anyway only time well tell who is good or who sucks lol but please when your team starts losing who ever yu are dont come up with lam ass reason why your team is not winning because we all talk trash.and we think were all coaches.remenber in the end only one team stands not two per division.
Im curious to see wat Damiens Run game is going to be about-- I heard they lost a runingbck but aquried a very big and fast runingack named Marcus Williams..I havent heard about Marcus since his freshman year.
So I think that Damiens offense will be shocking on the ground too!!
and im curious to see how this young fellow will do!!
Jerimiah Tollerman
Upland High
1.Los Altos- to many weapons, solid team
2.West Covina-Didnt do to good in summer ball but things change when pads come on
3.Damien-Mendrum and Eschardies run a solid offense, defense is questionalbe
4.South Hills- A lot of shoes to fill, but they can do it
5.Covina-They will go as far as the qb takes them.
6.Bishop Amat-Solid young team should do damage this year.
7.Rowland-Solid qb and rb they will do damage in there league
8.Glendora-One of the best coaching staffs in the SGV. If the players do what the coaches tell them they will do very well this year
9.Charter Oak-Good qb and wr, but most overated team in SGV
10.Bonita-Sleeper team last year might be the same this year with a good reciever in Cole.
Cant wait for the Mayors Trophy to be on the line on 9/22/06 for the first time in 3 years.
Charter Oak (Lou Farrar) vs. Glendora (Mark Pasquarella)
@ Citrus 7pm
Charter Oak (Lou Farrar) vs. Damien (Scott Morrison)
Glendora (Mark Pasquarella) vs.Damien (Scott Morrison)
ok, heres mine..
1. Bishop Amat-it doesn't matter if they went 3-7, they could still beat any team in the SGV.
2. Charter Oak-if AMAT wasn't around, they would be #1.
3. West Covina-program still moving along and staying strong.
4. Los Altos-Castaneda is about ready to explode...BEWARE ALL SGV SECONDARY.
5. Covina-Tribune Player of the Year is returning this year. Has a decent recieving core.
6. South Hills-lost alot of talent this year, but might still be able to make a title run.
7. Damien-always physical, but this might be a rebuilding year.
8. Rowland-show me something and i'll move you up.
9. Glendora-always solid, but there is alot of more talented teams
10. Rosemead/Arroyo-undecided

Watch out here come THE ROSEMEAD HIGH PANTHERS . Never get any respect ....I think 10-1 last year should earn a little more respect . Let's just hope their O looks better than they did in That playoff game .
Hey x
Lighten up buddy, everybody knows that these rankings and pre season talk mean nothing once the season starts. Its just a fun way to kill some time until the season starts, I look forward to comming on this sight and reading
everyones opinions and insights, and by the way,
I love all the West Covina hype, you must be a South Hills fan. LOL
nick rowland qb and rb are good but thats just a small part and thats why yu dont know about rowland the o line and d line are huge and fast and by the way i have followed los altos for yrs i know just what they have, i graduated from there and i know its a great program and rowlands defense is well thats all i have to say.
good luck buddy.
ARAM TOLEGIAN
make a best returning lineman list dont for get the only offensive 1st team all league junior in the SAL PUT HIM FOR DEFENSE AND OFFENSE
NUMBER 64 FOR ROWLAD
ALSO THOSE TO BIG GUYS FOR SOUTH HILLS
Joe Ur prob have no idea what LA has do you? I know Rowland has a talented QB n RB, but stil I Can go from the past because Rowland hasn't done anything! They're good but like I said not good enough to beat the likes of Damien, CO, LA, n WC........well all just have to see tho..
co's "monster line" is very over rated
if you want a real line look at chino hillz glendora and damien that is what a monster line looks like
I just want to say that all this top ten crap is overated, how can you rank teams that havent even played...passing tournaments and all that B.S. is not football wait till Wk. 14 and see who is still left...and im especially tired of reading all this stuff on West CO...cause its all hype.
Here's my opinion.
1 Charter Oak- Michael Johnson,Johnny Crespo Drew Carreon,A.J. Pasalo,David Altamirano & Company will be hard to beat, especially with that Monster line they will have.
2 Los Altos- I got a feeling they will Reload this year, looked good in the Bonita tournament,& Gano & Staff are hard to beat
3 Bishop Amat- They may under achieve, but I think they might still beat anyone in the valley.
4 South Hills- Because of their success these past few years I will give them the pre-season
edge over West Co., but with their heavy graduation losses I have a feeling
the Bulldogs may turn that around this season.
5 West Covina- My favorite sports team, I feel they could end the season at a higher ranking than this,[maybe top 2 barring injuries], but as of now I will go conservative cause I have a few question marks that must be answered in the first couple of games.
6- Damien- QB & reciever looked top notch at the Don Lugo tournament,& you know they will always have a monster line.
7 Rowland- I got a feeling the Raiders might be as good as Joe say's they will be, if so look out San Antonio League, but if not, they will still be a tough game for anyone in the top ten.
8 Glendora- solid team, their coach always gets the most out of them.
9 Covina- Still a good team but lost some good skill players.
10 Bonita- Edges out Arroyo for the ten spot, another team that over achieves in a tough league.
nick yu dont even know what rowland has do your homework boy.Dont look at the past, the past is over its a new yr my friend and by the way los altos #1 please.we will soon see.
Joe its very obvious you are a Rowland fan, but there is no way they are in the top 5 let alone #1, I seriously doubt they can beat West Co, Damien, CO, & LA, .......and Wilson is lucky to be on this list and they're defenitely not top 5 and can barely hang on to the ten spot.......my thoughts tho
my top ten goes something like this, rowland and west co should be tied for the #1 spot because, they tied as freshman, west co won as sophmores, and rowland won as juniors this yr well be the show down, they with out a dout are the best teams in sgv to start the yr the rest goes something like this
2-DAMIEN
3-COVINA
4-CHARTER OAK
5-WILSON
6-LOS ALTOS
7-ARROYO
8-GLENDORA
9-SOUTH HILLS
10-BONITA
but than again perdiction dont mean jack lets get this games going and will see who is who .
Condolences to West Covina's Nick Field & family
as they lost little brother Jacob Field to brain cancer, he was ten year's old, there is a touching article on Nick & Jacob in the sports section of both Friday's & Saturdays Tribune, my thoughts and prayers to the family.
I am backlogged with things to get done for the site, but I'm trying to get those up. I return from vacation next week and I want to make sure I do the proper research and talk to the right coaches before putting them up. Stay tuned ...
and what about the top lb and db
when are you going to do a top 10 linemen in the sgv?
i have 2 reasons damien should be ranked #1
1 mark mendrun
2 travis eschardies
theres nothing better than that
As per ranking Los Altos:
Maybe Gano's "we're gonna be OK" is being regarded as one of those cartoon policemen telling the crowd "move along people, nothing to see here". Like that ever works.
Frankly, the only guage anyone really has on Los Altos at the moment is their fairly strong (though limited) showing in passing league. Obviously that's a very incomplete picture, but it has showcased the fact that their defense has been getting to the ball a -lot- quicker than the teams of the last two years.
I think the bottom line here, though, is we really have no idea how good anyone is going to be, so we're grasping at the quality of the existant programs top athletes.
Good point on the pointlessness of pre-season record without context. Heck, Wilson should be 5-0 going into league, and nobody will have any idea whether or not they're any good at that point.
Here is my top 10 for 06-07
1- West Covina- speed kills and a physical line.
2- Bishop Amat- would run the table against any other local schools schedule.
3- Rowland- See West Covina + motivated to prove all naysayers.
4- Damien- very skilled and disciplined
5- Covina- best QB in the valley.
6- South Hills- coaching is simply the best
7- Charter Oak- high expectations, will find a way to choke.
8- Los Altos- solid all around
9- Arroyo- always tough and hardnosed.
10- Baldwin Park- Harris will carry this team.
That's three of you now who have Los Altos No. 1. What the hell is going on here? Keep these Top 10s coming with comments. LOVE the comments!
Okay here's my list for all of you.
1. Los Altos - This years silent assasin who will be gunning for SH and CO and a Title
2. West Covina - Great Athletes who will be solid contenders
3. Damien - Offense is steady enough to win games, but defense is a question
4. Charter Oak - Well see if the sophs now juniors can step up to the hype and win
5. Covina - returning QB will take them as far as he possibly can
6. Bishop Amat - Records havent showed why they should be any higher on the list
7. South Hills - Rebuilding but still have solid athletes to make some noise
8. Rowland - The most hyped team from the players and fans, good RB and QB well all wait and see what they can really do
9. Glendora - Good coaching and a decent football team will have to deal with their rough schedule
10. Wilson - There skill players are great, unfortunately no line on both sides of the ball will be their fall.
1. Los Altos--They'll just be flat out solid
2. Damien--High powered offense..they will wear teams out
3. W. Covina--Some solid returners, very physical
4. Rowland--Skill players.coaching staff might figure it out this year
5. Charter Oak--Biggest O-line, but blows it every year
6. Covina--Best QB in the valley
7. Bishop AMat--They would beat every team below
8. Rosemead--Watch out for these guys..no joke
9. Wilson--Breakout year for them
10. South Hills--too many question marks..always seem to get it done though
Go Blue... I agree that Amat could play with anyone in the SGV. And could certainly beat many of the teams I would have in the top 10. The bigger issue is... why is this an issue? Why isn't Amat a pre-season #1 every season? They have so many distinct advantages over much of the SGV. Find another team on that list that has 100% free reign to get kids from anywhere, a tradition packed with championships, scholarships & NFL alumni. And yet in recent memory Amat fans have been paying money in Nov/Dec to watch many SGV teams still playing football. They underachieve against teams of their own caliber and the have no excuse why. How long ago were Amat fans looking forward to being a California power or even, perhaps, a National power? Bottom line is I feel (just my opinion) they underachieve when just about every other team I mentioned hasn't.
OG and Go Blue - That's the (Amat) dilemma when making these rankings - What do you do with Amat when it can beat most teams in the Valley but can't handle the rest of its schedule? I agree with Swarm, a 5-5 Amat is hard to have in the Top 10 this year with so many other good teams (if that's how it happens). It's not enough to simply gauge who beats who, you have to give credit for who's having the best season according to their own situation. Amat beating Glendora and getting blown out by Servite doesn't constitute a good season.
OG - Love the CO comments "the Aram jinx" classic!
nono of this matters all that matters is who comes to play and who wants it more . rankings dont mean a thing mission viejo rk. #1 in the nation but didnt even make it to the big dance. ..u.s.c lost in the championship anything can happen
Here is my top 10:
1- West Covina - Best athletes returning (Wallace x 2, Tyler), the spread puts up points faster than you can blink.
2- Damien - Will definately make some noise and earn the respect they are craving.
3- Amat - Do you rank them higher because they can beat everyone else around here or rank them low because you know they will underachieve to the SGV expectations and end up .500?
4- Los Altos- you know they will be looking to clobber SH in the opener to make a statement. Good skill positions.
5- Covina - If they get past the first two games they could be 10-0 waiting for Oaks Chrisitian (Ouch).
6 - Rowland - If they live up to the talk their players and lovers keep posting here they will be solid.
7 - Glendora - Overachieveing every year, they should still be a solid team with good coaching and a good program.
8 - Charter Oak - Their receiver can only carry them so far, Aram's biggest overhyped picked in years. Can you say the Aram jinx?
9- Bonita - will find a way to win some games and surprise in gamse they were not supposed to win but do.
10- South Hills - Is there an impact player at all coming back on this team that saw action? Rebuilding year for them, revenge for everyone else.
There are my rankings abuse them as you wish...
Swarm: I understand that Amat may not be what it once was but to make a valley pre-season top 10 and not include the Lancers doesn't make sence. Even worse, is the fact that Arroyo and Bonita are on there but no Amat? Punishment for lack of production in recent years? How is this for "lack of production"? In the last 2 years Amat is 6 - 0 against 3 Valley teams (all 3 are in your top 10 by the way) with a combined score of 186 - 56. That doesn't earn even a little respect? Is the pre-season top 10 based on the best teams or the teams with the most winnable schedules? If its about the schedule than you are right. So I guess all Amat needs to do to get a little respect is to fill its preseason with valley teams and go 5 - 0. Now would they make your top 10, or would there still be a "lack of production"? Since there are so many SGV teams that are better than Amat, I wonder what their records would look like against Amat's schedule this year (or any other year). Would they still be ranked ahead of Amat?
Guru, is that because of schedule strength or because the Chargers aren't that good? Don't tell me that CO shouldn't be No. 1 and then not tell me who should. If I wanted to make the ranking based on who I think will be 3-0 after three weeks, then Covina is No. 1.
Aram im sorry but C.O. should be in no way number 1. I wouldnt even give them a top 5 vote. After their first 3 games they will be 1-2
Nice Swarm, nice!!!! That's what I like to see!!! Where is everybody else's write ups? I can put you guys to work!
1. Los Altos- Good staff, fairly quiet summer... watch out!
2. West Covina- Spread offense will create more room for Wallace & Co. Like they need it?
3. Damien- Only question is will their defense match their high octance offense?
4. Charter Oak- Too bad those guys don't have use of a weightroom! The absolute biggest CO team I have seen in a long, long time.
5. South Hills- Anyone thinking they are rebuilding needs to stay away from sharp instruments in December when the Huskies start making another run.
6. Covina- Will go as far as their QB wills it!
7. Rowland- I dunno? Can you possibly finish 3rd in league and be a top 10 team in the SGV... YES.
8. Glendora- Don't play like a bunch of silver spooners. Excellent staff and solid, tough players.
9. Bonita- Deserves a better break than 05' Football Gods will help get Podley through league. Certainly a playoff caliber team.
10. Arroyo- New faces with more weapons and a better line... 5 playoff games in 2 seasons is a notable achievement for most leagues... especially one from the MVL.
*** Bishop Amat- Yeah I am punishing them a bit for a lack of production in recent years. 5-5 won't land you mid-pack in the Tribune this year!
I like this list Aram, I know when the season comes around the list will change, but numbers 1-5 are about right. Some solid contenders......Los Altos Week 1 vs SH cant wait!
82 - The Top 10 is updated weekly in the Wednesday edition of the SGV Tribune. The first official Top 10 will be out in our preview issue on August 31.
Dan - The comparison I've heard about WestCo's new offensive philosophy is Covina last year, which is basically Urban Meyer stuff. Whatever, lots of shovels and short passes and hopefully tons of touches for all the weapons.
Aram you said West Co. will implement the spread
offense, do you think this will be on occasion or is this going to be their main offense?
There are quite a few names on the Damien team that are unknown, but give it 2 maybe 3 weeks and they will be household names so expect to rearrange the list. On that will these change week to week during the season?
aram, yu can put what yu want all i can say is we will put closer to all this bull shit when the season starts and than yu can buy me lunch or dinner or we can do the buffet line what ever works for me to forgive yu for your sins lol.PEOPLE this is the yr of the raiders and i dont mean the sonora raiders or those big time losers the oakland raiders good luck to all.hey aram maybe yu should listen to knights he makes alot of sense. But i do like what yu wrote next to rowland and i thank yu for it ill take what we get.
Nice. I like it Aram, the list looks good.
It's great to see Arroyo getting the respect we deserve. I think your right on about CO, but with all I'm hearing about Rowland maybe they should be switched with Westco. Can't wait till kick-off the season, Go Knights
Wassup, with Number 8....The BIG E is gonna roll you, when he sees you...."CAN I TALK TO YOU FOR A SECOND".....Go Big GREEN!
The BIG MPK!
only 4th that will change by maybe 2 weeks
... and the Bulldogs started 6-0 before the meltdown which began against South Hills. The Trib didn't see it coming.
okay yea you might think glendora is goign to do crappy this year but you put arroyo and wilson up there. come on aram. glendora is better then both those schools an you know it.
For the second consecutive year, West Covina is ranked over South Hills in the pre-season standings.
At the end of the year, SH was ranked #1 is the valley.
Will history repeat itself???
Nice Go Tartans. You see? That's what I like to hear. Things will definitely change when I've had a chance to go see some of these teams practice. I may not like some of the teams currently in the Top 10 or I may like them more.
Wow you dropped Glendora thats cool i guess, i'll make sure that is changed. Just give it a couple of months
Pretty damn close at. I think Bonita & Glendora should replace Wilson & Arroyo. Is Amat there on name alone? Switch SH & Rowland.
