PRESEASON: Top 10 linebackers in the SGV ...
... let me just say this, linebacker is a loaded position. Let the debate begin.

Norys as in Chuck Norris as in Lone Wolf McQuade as in punishing.
I asked around to try and get other opinions about this group ranking. What I took from those conversations more than anything else was that everybody interprets the position, and how it's played well, differently. What makes a good linebacker to me is somebody who plays the position like AJ Hawk or Brian Urlacher. I like LBs who run down plays. I like LBs who fly to the sideline and either force the runner out or destroy him before he gets out (of bounds). I DON'T like guys like current USC stiff Keith Rivers who can't run down a play from behind (see embarrassing Rose Bowl performance for example) or get stiff armed and hold on for dear life until a teammate secures the tackle (again, see Rivers). Another thing I learned is that many people like LBs who play the position by simply letting every run play fall into their laps before making in the tackle. Do the words "Stay home, Zavala" mean anything to you?
1. Chad Norys, Rowland - The area's version of Troy Polamalu. It's chic now to be an LB/SS combo.
2. Carlton Fletcher, Bishop Amat - Was returning a fumble for a touchdown everytime we turned around last year.
3. Anthony Hile, Damien - Never thought I'd say this ... "throwback player."
4. A.J. Pasalo, Charter Oak - Psycho.
5. Shaun Rosenthal, West Covina - Part of WestCo dynamic duo ...
6. Nick Field, West Covina - ... the other half of the best LB tandem in the area.
7. Mike McDonough, Covina - QBs shouldn't hit like this.
8. Damon Kulkinski, South Hills - Have a vibe he'll be higher on this list at the end of the season.
9. Manny Esquivel, Covina - The forgotten rock of the Colts last season.
10. Anthony Chavez, El Monte - As sure of a tackler as anyone on this list.

Comments
Norys was the best lb in the area end of story.

one of your backers up there made the cover of the paper Damon Kuklinski of south hills high school...he wiffed on a 1 or 2 tackles early in the game but once he got the jitters out made some plays i think that vibe looks to be right

J Moralles looked strong at times against AMAT, he can hit. I don't think he was used to a school that keeps coming at you and I bet he wishes he transferred to AMAT right about now.

Ryan Farrar's @ Chaffey. He's the starting safety.

ba 24/7 Did you also forget the win/loss percentage that BP had?. The big tackles name i think is robert he was at covina for a while and transfered out. I never got around to seeing him play but as far as the coaches are concerned no worry just a big body in the way.
Posted by: t0y | August 30, 2006 5:38 PM
baldwin park has has a 6'1 def.tackle anthony witty #54, the rosemead kid #58 is going to be a monster this year. bp has that big offensive tackle too #78

Carlton Fletcher is going to have a great year if his knee can hold up through this rugged 10 game schedule Amat has. Amat O lineman: Junior Dominque Austin has got to right up there with the best of them. Also Los Altos has a huge lineman in Nick Longoria....Rosemeads D Lineman Anthony Gonzales is a Manster this year.
Posted by: BA 24/7 | August 29, 2006 1:39 PM
Sam Gaxiola of Northview was the #1 tackler on the team even with Damien James breathing down his neck

Keeping it real,
You act like you were a teammate of Farrar's so how is it that you got your info so messed up? Were we on the same team? Farrar and Mendrun were battling it out all summer. Weren't you at any of the passing leagues? They shared the position unless Farrar's arm was hurting ( I he overused/hurt it at a football camp he went to early in the summer) Farrar is a great player and leader and I think he can go far! Good luck this season,Ryan. Stay out of trouble. You're gonna be great where ever you end up!
Posted by: fb06 | August 28, 2006 6:05 PM
Attention Ryan Farrar insiders: How about one of you post what happened to him at the Shrine All-Star Game? We ran a feature on him leading up to the game and then he was a no-show on game night. I never got the info as to what happened. I know his mom was there wondering the same thing. Can somebody please inform?

By the way, where is Farrar going to play on Saturdays this year? Aram posted that it was New Mexico a while ago, but there is no mention of him on their athletic website, and their weekly press release only has one freshman letter winner on the team and it's not Ryan. Just curious. Considering his speed and size, if he is at New Mexico he would probably play SS in Coach Long's 3-3-5.

Hey what happen to the bonita football team, they have beyond excellant players this year. Remember they went 8-2 last year!
Posted by: d.aguayo | August 28, 2006 12:01 PM
Jeff You're right. Ryan didn't do much last year except throw his arm out during the summer practices because he was the only QB during the summer. Mendrum joined the team late. Ryan almost missed the season, quess that was his fault, then Mendrum comes back and thanks Ryan , "How's the shoulder?" Also Ryan never played middle LB, Miller and Hile did. Ryan will most likely play ss or free depending on the system they run. Good luck Ryan ( on Saturdays ) Thanks for your leadership, friendship and bone jarring hits! Ya kknnnoww !

I think all top ten linebackers on the list deserve to be recognized. Good List.

Keeping it real-
I said Farrar didn't do much last year. Your response was he has potential and time will tell. Maybe we're both right. I agree that he has potential and could be very good player someday soon, but what you think about his upside doesn't change the fact that he didn't do very much last year.

You can get soft coverage of high school sports almost anywhere. Most media outlets that cover HS sports do it with kid gloves. The Tribune and extensions of it won't be one of them, so long as I have a say about it.
I post these Top 10s or my feelings about things like "Wanted to spend more time with my family" as matters of opinion. Anybody who's been in this business knows that you can't make everyone happy. If any reader disagrees, then he/she can post a comment and say so. If any reader really just doesn't like it, or me, then kick rocks. This blog will roll on whether it's getting one hit per day or the over 1,500 it's currently averaging.

My point is when you list players as best 1 thru 10 you have started a dialogue. Which means people can state their opinions. Mine is his ranking, not him personally. I'm sure he's a very good football player. But here's the problem rating High School players- parents and loved ones get offended. That's why this is a public discourse. Some people won't agree. If you want positive, feel good musings, look in the back of your school program. Where grandma and grandpa say I love you! Rating HS players is difficult but remember this- the games haven't even been played! As far as Ryan Farrar not being a baller please wake up Jeff and come out of the sun. Ryan had/has better upside and time will tell. Remember this systems make or break players ask Ray Lewis which he prefers the 4-3 or the 3-4 ? Is he less of a LB, no, but he is more successful in one and not the other is all I'm saying. Now ask yourself is he better than Joe Morales with 100 plus tackles? I don't know systems, systems, systems Sorry about the coaching perspective I thought we were talking about football

Hey Aram, attended the taping of "A Local Sports show" in San Dimas today at the Philly sandwich place. I have to say that it was really good. I was impressed by Reginald Miller's professionalism and Traci is a really nice lady. You're lucky to be working with such professional and talented folks

hey xyz,
South el monte had a pretty good schedule last year. Bonita, wilson, are competative against charter oak and los altos, arroyo, rosemead, westminster, and south hills.
Joe Morales still racked up over 150 tackles last season. He is a stud!! and if you dont know why he transfered to st paul, you ask somebody. Come watch him sep 1st against amat at st paul.
Posted by: mvlchamp | August 26, 2006 5:01 PM
who cares about joe morales he played donkey teams and than he ran to st paul
Posted by: xyz | August 26, 2006 3:56 PM
Joe Morales would have been No. 1 on the list were he still local.
Norys played a combo ss/lb last year, but was much more like a linebacker than SS. He will be more of a linebacker this year. If you've been watching football in recent year, the chic thing for most defenses is to have these combo type players - LBs with DB speed. Check what the Raiders do with first round pick Michael Huff this year.
There is no Top 10 position players put in print by the Tribune. We do have an All-Area team after the season.
Posted by: Aram | August 26, 2006 3:04 PM
norys is a strong part in the rowland defense. he can shut down the run or defend the pass. go ahead and look at game film, he shuts it down.
Posted by: 56 | August 26, 2006 2:19 PM
Keeping it real. If you knew anything about Damien's D or Anthony Hile you would know that they got out to 6-1 record in large part to him, in the early part of the season teams were running at him because he was young and he shut them down!!!! Then teams figured out to run away from him and Damien had problems stopping the run. The word Throwback definatly describes him to a "T" he is as tough as they come and very humble. Ryan Farrar was a good player "when he wanted to be" but how many games did he miss because of injuries his junior season???? To many!! Comparing Farrar and Hile is like Apples and Oranges Physically and attitude wise.

RICHARD... brian slover graduated last year and is attending c.s. nrthrdge on a baseball scholarship david slover however is a lb/de from that school we played them in passing leauge klusklinski was a ball hawk and little slover(235)lol...was very physical...it was a pretty nice four way passing tourny at shhs that day
Posted by: RICHARD UR WRONG | August 26, 2006 1:44 PM
Anthony Hile should be #1 o this list because even if he is undersized he takes on all blocks and is a great tackler proven last year in his 70+ tackles as a junior. He has the haeart of a lion and is a great leader and captain who can back it up. Watch out for the Damien LB Corp of Anthony Hile, Brian Gomez and Trevor Stokes to be the best group in all of the area!!!
Posted by: DHS4LIFE | August 26, 2006 1:43 PM
HEY ARAM JUST WONDERING HOW YOU WOULD HAVE RANK JOE MORALES ON THE LIST IF HE WAS STILL AT SOUTH EL MONTE?
Posted by: MVLCHAMP | August 26, 2006 1:16 PM
keeping it real i dont get your point a ss could be considered a linebacker in some defensives just stick to being a fan and not a coach amen.
Posted by: sh | August 26, 2006 11:54 AM
Ryan Farrar was in the middle of last year's Damien team. He didn't do much of anything all year.
Posted by: jeffrulerson | August 26, 2006 10:37 AM
i think brian slover shoud be on this list too. great team leader, goes both ways, and loves to pursue and "stick" you. kulkinski and him compliment each other well.
Posted by: richard | August 26, 2006 8:36 AM
Mr. Tolegian, really? LB/SS Troy Palomalu clone as best LB in area? Don't really get that one? LB are LBs and SS are SSs. Stay focused. You really can't compare Ray Lewis with Steve Atwater can you? Apples and Oranges. Hile 3? Throwback? They ran on Damien's defense all year long, Amat, Canyon Country, Chino, Chino Hills, did you see the second half of the Glendora game? Running clinics! Sorry to say. Hile #3 ? He was surrounded by a defense that started 9 seniors! Malady, Turner, Fulham, Chris Lucero,Casrita,Frank Lucero, Dawson, Miller, Thompson, Farrar ! That's alot of speed, experience and beef! And yet when teams decided to get into smash mouth football Damien came up on the short end. Top ten LBs shut down running backs. What running team did they shut down? Stats are tricky. Tackling a runner five yards down the field and stoppping a runner for short or zero yardage, between the tackles, separates the pretenders from the contenders. Hopefully Hile will step up to the challenge and merit his lofty status. But throwback? please. Put Ryan Farrar in the middle of last year's team and THAT'S a throwback...Willie Lanier style! Can I get an Amen!

trevor stokes from damien will be a good candidate for a later list for linebackers...he is a beast in coverage and blitzs

unknown,i get a kick out of a guy who puts unknown he probably lit yu up last yr lol ,seen this kid play last yr norys and was totally impressed with him one of the true lb/ss around whats funny is yu say he wasnt strong in the box thats because from what i understand, is he play ss most of the time so he wasnt in the box gets your facts straight.
Posted by: sh | August 25, 2006 11:46 PM
aram i think that u did a bad job putting chad norys first i was one of the teams he played lasy year and he wasnt very strong in the box....just watch game film instead of the stat sheet and ull c wat i mean
