Showdown Friday is coming ... Who's for real? Who isn't?

The first truly huge Friday of the season is upon us ...

Tribune No. 1 West Covina vs. Star-News No. 2 Monrovia
Tribune No. 2 Los Altos vs. Tribune No. 3 Damien
Tribune No. 5 Charter Oak vs. Tribune No. 6 Glendora

Inside scoop from Los Altos: The Conquerors coaching staff can't buy that there's a better team in the Valley than Damien.
Inside scoop from Monrova: Call it the hangover effect from last week's win against Arcadia, but the Wildcats think they have a good shot against WestCo. Or should I say coaches are cautiously optimistic.
Inside scoop from Charter Oak: Receiver Michael Johnson has been suspended and won't play against Glendora. The Chargers' offense is in big trouble.

It doesn't get any bigger than this! OK, maybe when a league title is on the line or late in the playoffs.

Sierra League at a glance:

The Sierra League consist of Ayala, Chino, Chino Hills, Damien, Diamond Bar, and Glendora.

Each of these programs on any given friday could beat the best.

As of Oct 2, 2006 Chino Hills could to be the front runner for league honors, but the season is long and I'm sure each program will test thier strengths and attack thier weakness to make each game count.

Damien has gotten some good ink time of late because they have played some good ball. The O seems to be jelling. Thier D is questionable...so the final whistle will reflect thier successes as well as thier falures on the field.

Chino is a program that has lost thier beloved champion head coach...his replacement is qualified...but the gene poll at CHS is not part of the picture anymore...so, they will stumble more then we have seen in the years past.

Ayala could be good..and we know that they have the talent, but are they committed to being a success?...personally- for 2006 they do not have what it takes to be number one in the Sierra League.

Diamond Bar has no more O and D strength like they had years ago. The opening of new HS's in and around thier area has hurt them in a big way. But, I still think they could be the big spoiler on any given friday.

Glendora has been the tick-tick bird on the neck of the Sierra League for the some time now. Coach P and his staff has what it takes to be a champion. The Tartans have a solid D and a maturing O that will soar when they open league play against Damien.

Game of the year: Glendora vs Chino Hills

Outcome: Glendora 24 --Chino Hills 20

CHARTER OAK 31, GLENDORA 17
MONROVIA 21, WEST COVINA 21

Good Comment Sliver....

Remember parents, these are the years that your kids need to enjoy playing whatever sport they desire! There is more to life than athlethics, and when it's all over, hopefully the memories will be positive ones. Keep it clean and POSITIVE, if you can

Aram: my advise to you and the tribune is to stop highlighting Harris on a weekly show! Way over kill and opens up many problems and bad feelings from other good talents. Harris is a good talent, but many more in the valley to cover as well.

BraveHater, I can't believe my eyes. The painted red?????? Hasn't happened in years and won't happen anytime soon. If Heggins lets harris play he will rush for 300 yards. Your lucky that Heggins is to good of a guy to disrespect other kids like that. I just hope you and your "boys" in red don't do anything stupid and try to hurt a kid trying to do his best to earn a college scholarship. Play the game straight and let what happens happen!

I have enjoyed reading all of the comments about all of the teams each week. But this bad-mouthing of teams, players and parents is going too far. Our boys play hard, coaches work hard teaching and training, most parents raise their boys to respect those in authority, and what do we read from some of these postings...nothing that builds school spirit, team esteem, and player comradship. All of the teams in the SGV work hard and play hard. Regardless of win or loss, they are still kids giving moms, dads and grandparents pride for their efforts. Yes we know some teams may be better, some players may excel more than the guy next to him, but all-in-all it's an amature sport, and they kids should be treated as amatures. When they get to be Pros, making all the big bucks then you can down-mouth them or their team, love 'em or hate 'em, support them financially by paying the expensive admission price to a game and argue over who's No. 1, but for now, they're high school kids enjoying what they love to play this time of the year - football! Go support them, cheer for them, but be kind in what you say. Remember, words do hurt!

Betty B:

You have hit it right on the mark! This site should be more professional than it is, but seems like everyone loves to bash eachother.

Take note ARAM! Your are part of the problem and should have better business judgement!

BraveHater,

What do you call "The Weekly Aaron Harris Game?" I don't see any Amat, CO, LA, South Hills or other school's players being singled out weekly on this site with their stats displayed for all to see. What do you call the feature on Aaron Harris that was the display of last Wednesday's sports section? No love for BP? You better guess again.

"Showdown" Friday??? Hurts man.

Ok Aram, you never give any love to the baldwin park schools. I know we are the damiens, west covs or even covina, but come on. Friday's game is huge in the city. Its so big there is even a dance planned after at the citys teen center. Give it some coverage! Especially since its going to be at the best football stadium in the city. Sierra Vista is going to shock the city, and the valley when they beat bp. When the beat bp they are going to paint the bell at the 50 yard line.

wow Aram,

These boards have become pretty brutal of late. The negativity is seeping into every comment. I come in here to read about the pride and honor we have for our favorite teams but all I am seeing is petty fighting and namecalling. And the ones doing it are the adults. Go figure.

What are we teaching our kids if we can't even hold a decent conversation without attacking each other. I can't understand how anyone can post something so negative about any program let alone one they say they support wholeheartedly. Airing dirty laundry for all to see does no one any good.
I hope we can all get back on track and speak of the good we see in these kids so they can enjoy their sport and not dwell on the bad.

hey quit bagging on each other its not right if u dont have anything good to say about ur team or another team dont say it im sick of hearing about damien dads so SHUT THE HELL UP

aram. get your but to the rowland game tomorrow night and yu can see what i been talking about,do yu ever go to the other side of the 60 fwy.

Mr. Corona,

The amount of time you waste on "coaching" us is funny to say the least. You claim to have a life, yet from what my kids say, you post on here nightly. I had to check you out for myself after meeting you after a Freshman practice last year. I'm surprised we all fit in your world next to your ego. I just have one question for you...if your so disgruntled about Damien, why is your son still here? You know no matter how much you try you will never get a job here. Move on with your son and take over another Home Stand where you can bark and fart and point and dismantle every play and every coach. At the end of the day sir, it just sound like bitter grapes. As for being asked by Thompson to coach, need we look any further at what type of coach you could possibly be. I mean we all saw how much butt kissing it took for you to get in his graces (and your kid still didn't play) but boy, your lips must be sore. Enjoy the rest of your season, at least your son has a uniform.

Mr. Jeff Chieves,

I'm glad to hear people stand up for their friends in the city of Glendora. The Kovar family is very fortunate to have such a decent friend. I wrote Pt.II because I know first hand the peripheral damage that these detectives cause. Sooner or later someone was going to guess wrong and embarass the wrong person, and how do you unring THAT bell? My guess is that "can't take it anymore" will crawl anonymously back under that rock where he belongs. At least he'll have company- GetReal's already there!

DONS, are you seriuos?? I'm not sure S.V. will have any players left by the 4th quarter. Last year the stands emptied because the game was so bad. This year will be even worse. Baldwin Park and Aaron will turn this game into a laugher by the end of the 1st quarter. Did you not see the game last week vs. West Co? This team is MUCH MORE than Aaron. In every boys sport the past couple of years Baldwin Park is dominated this so called rivalry. Is Sierra Vista going to win a game sometime?

FYI - Michael Johnson is out for one game. The comment that he touched an official is dead wrong. Two players were ejected not just Michael. Just so you know he is not will Harris. He is a good kid that got caught pushing back. Now both players pat the piper this week. People this years CO team has a much class as any in the top ten. Don't throw CO of 2006 in with a team that is now gone. Will was a great player that exibited some poor behavior in games. He never missed practice and never talked back to coaches. He just struggles when he was in front of the crowd. This team does not. Friday will be a great game with two classy veteran coaches battling head to head in a cross town rivalry. Ariam you are right the council is pulling for G - High. Thoes of us from "Baja Glendora" anways know that. Why do you think they won't allow us in their district. The only differnce between us and them is that CO is a football school and Glendora is a Basketball School.

"Can't take it anymore",

Several of the postings you have contributed to "Mr. Kovar", is wrong. I'll take credit for a few of them, not all of them. I'm not certain he is aware of this blog, but I will make certain he is after reading your posting. My name is Jeff Chieves, a long time friend of his family and others on the team. I have every right to post my observations on this blog without having you or anyone else for that matter (See postings re: Mr. Corona)trying to "oust" posters and trying to be Mr. detective. I am a major fan of West Covina (last 15-20 years)and also support GHS having lived here over 30 years. Not to mention, I have known the Kovar family 25 years and have watched all their boys grow up.

Just wanted to clear this up.

now i am the first to admit i am a huge Los Altos backer, and ive actually seen Damien play once this year, and if i was betting with Aram's money, yea, id pick Los Altos, but since realistically i would have to lay down my own money, i would have to go with damien, the overall skill level might favor them and the guys in the trenches, well i dont even wanna go there. Nowe that is speaking with mind, enough of that!!..My heart says GO LOS ALTOS!!!!
Aram, who do u think has the egde friday nite?

Why embarass the son for the sins of the father? Tell the dad yourself or ignore him. It's THAT easy! I'm sure you do that in person, right? You ignore him don't you? Do you tell a son his Dad's making an ass out of himself? Well you just did! And everyone else at the son's school who's laughing at his dad and by extension him as well. Next time just ask the son to wear his underwear over his shorts and parade around school for a week. That would be kinder but certainly not as grand! By the way what's your real name? Oh, Exasberated One!

Allright! That's it. PLEASE Mr. Kovar, STOP.(or is it Will or Hal or...) Your son is a nice looking D-lineman at GHS, but let his play speak for itself. Quit posting all over with names like "HS football lover" and "Damien will lose" and "Luv the sport" and on and on. At first it was all about the Tartens great D-line (a bone the the LB's here and there) then you started mentioning Kovar #71 (even "Kovar?" in one post)by name, along with some other facts. Yes, the Tarten D is looking very good, but it's the LB'ers who are probably most impressive and the DB's look every bit as good as the D-line. I even laughed when "Help" posted under the Week#2 results about the stats being "soooooooo wrong", cause I knew it must be you before even looking at the stats. Then to see Kovar with 1 sack (not 2 or "several" as you posted earlier as "Rodger" and "OLDQB") and 4 total tackles (a solid game), you must obviously have seen his results differently. The fact is, its the team's coaching staff (or some designated person by the staff) who I believe reports those and the team keeps their own stats during the game or from game film later. It's tougher to get credit for a tackle than you might think. Anyway, was mostly entertained by your various postings, but your last post as "Not impressed" above did it for me. Posing (Hmm, Poser?) as a WC fan but using the Tarten D-line as your example? Come on. Back away from the Poppy seed muffins. Of course I'm probably as myopic for reading & responding it all, but there is some entertainment value in this Blog. Thanks Trib & Aram. To sum up-Go GHS; I'm cheering with you, let's support the TEAM.

PS - I'm hoping the "the answer man" wasn't you as well, but I fear so.

jus like to let everyone know that the person that said they are # 46 was not the actual 46. i didnt say those comments

so im guessing we moved down to number 4 in your top 10 aram its koo though. im jus wonderin how that happens after we thrash montebello 28-0 in the first quarter.i guess its cuz we have class and didnt bust an OAKS CHRISTIAN and post sum outrageous score.but it was fun seeing EVERYONE(SERIOUSLY) on the team play almost a quarter!!! but to us thats what high school footballs all about.

All right already there are too many people here trying to jump on the "Bagpipers" bandwagon.

As a "bagpiper homer" I liked where Aram had us. Not even mentioned in the pre-season polls and now we’re trolling the bottom phantoms of the “Tribs top ten. Aram, get us out of that top ten your going to “jinks us. Imagine that “The Tribune Curse move over Sports Illustrated. Next thing you know Aram you going to be trading in that “Property of Bishop Amat Athletic Department sweat shirt for a “Bagpiper Kilt.

Yeah, that’s what I want to see you doing your post game interview with Pasqie in your Kilt………..NOT!

Our defense has had some epic hits and swarms like killer bees being ticked off by the smoke from Uncle Joe's illegal Cubana cigar.

Now if our passing game clicks and the offense gels then who knows! Or better yet Who Knew!

The CO game should be interesting.

The “bagpipers hopefully will be ready as they begin hanging with the big dogs in the following weeks.

I’m out!

tartans by 40 this week...i wanna see if that lb pasaeo is really psycho like u said aram, he looks pretty soft to me

Mikey! Maybe I'll give Romie another chance that was CLASSIC ! Still laughing. Needed someone to lighten the mood! Thanks for the laughs! Heard the G-line at Glendora's tough. Big hitters at linebackers as well. You and Bluorca are neck and neck for top BLOGGER!

Not Impressed- Do tell?

Yeah, I can hear it already some little whinnie “Chris crying a river if my “Bagpipers pull out a “W against Charter Oak. Who cares if you haven’t got your gun on the field it’s part of the game....eeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr in this case maybe not. The deal is, if your going to go T.O.(Terrell Owens) on the field and within earshot of an official, you need to sit. You are a “student athlete act like it!

If one of my “Bagpipers smacked a zebra I’d expect Coach P to sit him too! But then again the "Bagpipers" are held to higher standards.

This is high school football, not x-treme sports where some neighborhood loser spouts off a plethora of f-bombs to some pony tailed hippie judging a skateboard competition at the Home Depot Center while showing off the latest mess he just had tatted to his dome.

Caught the broadcast of Damien/Claremont and wasn't impressed with either team.

Damien's QB and receiver connection is top notch but I thought both of Damien's lines were soft...VERY soft. Huge lines are meaningless if the kids are slow and over weight. I would take smaller guys who are strong and fast any day. While I am a West Covina fan, I will use the Glendora D-line as an example of great strength and speed. These guys aren't the largest D-line I have seen, but I don't think there is a o-line in the league they can't penetrate. Furthermore, Glendora's LB's are quick and hard hitting. All in all, next to us of course (WC), Glendora's defense must be one of the best in the valley. Wish we were playing them this year!! Would be a great matchup.

B.P. vs S.V, The bell will be painted red this year. S.V. has something coming to B.P.. Harris
will not rush over 100 yds against our defense. Lets see if he makes it through 4 quarters. Were gonna hit him like he aint never been hit before, and with Harris out, B.P. has no chance. We'll make sure that that QB throws the ball, and from what ive seen he has no chance. S.V. in a blowout................

I don't mind the Dodger talk because after last nite it's warranted and because 9-out-of-10 prep sports fans were watching. Just don't bring any rah-rah stuff for USC or the SF Giants to this blog, no matter what. Those won't even see the light of day on this board.

Another Catholic School baller! GarciaParra's a SJ Bosco alum ! Welcome home, Boston didn't deserve you! And marrying the best soccer player (male or female) America's ever produced is just icing on a stellar life! Let's see Agassi/Graf vs. GarciaParra/Ham now how's that for a gene pool!

I know this is a high school football thread and all, but GO DODGERS!!!!!!!! One of the greatest games the boys in blue have ever played.

I don't care what any of you say! the game of the week is the battle for bragging rights in Baldwin Park. The Aaron Harris show rolls on into Sierra Vista. Playing for the Bell Harris and the boys will roll by 40.

I hope after Glendora's victory this Friday against Charter Oak, we don't hear "you won only because Charter Oaks' Michael Johnson wasn't playing".

These kind of statements hurt the kids on both sides as it sends a signal that the worth of a TEAM surrounds just one player.

You don't always hear about injured players or players absent due to disciplinary actions. Glendora played Duarte last week without the services of Tartan top tackler, LB - Horn (#2). D-Line Coulter (#75) was out a quarter due to injury. This Friday's game may see other players out as well. The point is not all teams will disclose "who is out" as this advanced info may help the opposing team strategy.

So who ever may win this game or any game, "who is in and who is out" is part of the game. Lets let these kids enjoy their hard earned victory without excuses why they won. Save the excuses for why they lost.

Hey Tagalang,

Watch out for the bullitin board material that you are giving to Los Altos, not a smart move. Remember what happened when you guys did that to Amat last year. Let your playing speak for itself.

NY,

Anytime you have guys like Potts and Davis on the field, anything is possible. But West Covina's defense isn't a joke. Their LBs are smart, physical players and the DBs are all athletic. There's just no edge to be had on them. WestCo's offense I heard didn't really look good on Friday, but it moved the ball well against Mater Dei. If the good offense shows up, lookout. The bottom line, and I am going to say this quite often this season, West Covina has William Wallace and he's going to be the difference when the Dawgs play any SGV team.

Well let him know that I say WestCo is the best team Monrovia will play until next year, including the playoffs.

You don't think a Monrovia victory is practical??? We're talking about 17 year-olds playing against other 17 year-olds! Well, at least you did not say possible.

NY,

I actually told Maggiore what I had heard and he said he agreed with it. He thinks it's totally practical that M-Town could beat his boys. I don't buy it, but hey.

Come on Aram. The Dawgs are good enough without you creating bulletin board material. HAHA!

Damn right we're cautiously optimistic. This is high school football. We should always be optimistic. Also, we're playing West Covina. It's good to be cautious against those guys.

By the way, what happened to our boy Reg? Hey Reg, looks like Spires on you!

Aram, I will just say this: Monrovia by a Sean Kelley field goal

Come out and watch our game asinst los al we are gonna kill them cause they only have Castaneda who is 5"7 and our DE ends are 6"5, they alos have Ira thomas a rb who we can stop with hile n gomez. The reciever Foss isn't that good and DHarper can stop him like nothing. Look out for Mark, Travis,Marcus and Jeff to step up big n lead us to victory. I'll be playing alot im #46 in the pic above.

Sad to hear about Charter Oak Michael Johnson out for the Glendora game. I also hear several key Glendora players on defense and offense may not play due to injuries. I wanted to see both teams square off at full health and strength. Nevertheless, I believe Glendora's exceptionally strong defense will be a major factor in what will be a slim victory for Glendora.
My concern is Glendora's passing game. I heard it was pretty weak against Duarte. Unwise to rely on the running game alone.

I missed the charter oak game, sick, what happen with johnson? anyone know?

West Covina isn't playing Damien. They don't play at all. Damien is playing Los Altos. That's where I'll be. West Covina is playing Monrovia.

As long as Mendrum stays healthy at QB for Damien...I see the Spartans not only ripping through West Covina but the entire Sierra League. Its too bad you Spartans aren't playing Amat this year. Though you guys usually lose to Amat, with this Amat squad at this point of the season, you guys probably would have beat us. Respect to the Spartans and good luck !!!

Even without Michael Johnson, Charter Oak still has a good chance. From what I saw they weren't relying on him as much as everyone thought they would.
