POSTGAME: Talk your smack or cry me a river ...

They're back!

CO downed Bo-Hi and it's looking like a two-horse race in the Miramonte with D-Ranch.

Thursday's results
Glendora 33, Chino 10 (I know, I was there. Glendora played possessed and Chino isn't Chino anymore)
Duarte 56, La Puente 0 (It's time for a temporary, one year only, league change for the Falcs. Mission Valley maybe?)
Covina 55, Baldwin Park 25 (The Colts are absolutely rolling now. McDonough is flat unreal.)
Crespi 35, Bishop Amat 14 (I got a halftime score for this and was pumped when I heard 14-14)
Los Altos 38, Wilson 14 (Wildcats are done; LA is still hanging by a thread)
Charter Oak 17, Bonita 14 (CO defense is starting to remind me of the 2000 Ravens)
Arroyo 27, Rosemead 23 (Fire Singiser!)
South El Monte 27, Mountain View 7 (The Eagles are starting to roll)
Rowland 52, Walnut 20 (I want to remind you all that Rowland is 7-1 and the only loss was to Glendora by a point)
South Hills 23, West Covina 3 (Don't look at the record. Just know that SH is very good)
Damien 35, Diamond Bar 3 (Bring on Chino Hills)
Gabrielino 21, El Monte 15 (El Monte always does this)
Sierra Vista 12, Gladstone 0 (SV hadn't been playing well on defense until tonight)
San Dimas 68, Ganesha 0 (Can't split SD, NView or BP right now ... they're all taking turns on each other.)
Saturday's game
Pomona 34, Northview 10 (hurts man)

Aram's Baldwin Park vs. Covina thoughts: First of all, I want to say how impressed I was by the fan support Covina had. It might have been because of homecoming, but I hope that's the type of crowd the Colts always get. To the game - it went just how I thought it would. Covina's offense wasn't stopped and it was going to take BP trading points to stay in it. Having said that, I was impressed with BP's QB Angel Acevedo. He has some speed when he runs and he throws pretty well. I think that Coach Heggins has done a good job there. From where BP was to where they are now is nite and day (Al B. Sure). Anyway, what can you say about Covina? The offense is rolling again. Mike McDonough is a monster. This guy really just can't be stopped. The Colts run the ball with him or Tre McNair or they throw it deep. There was no in between last nite. The funny thing is that whatever they wanted to do, they did. If they threw deep, then Brad Gomez was wide open. If they ran McD or McNair, then they got yards. Like Heggins said "Pick your poison." As I've said before, outside of Amat or Damien, the rest of the SGV teams are dreaming if they think that Covina wouldn't give them a game. Players like McD, McNair or Jamal James would play for anyone else in the Valley, no question. Everyone I've spoken to already has Covina penciled in to be playing Oaks Christian in the finals. I wish I knew what the rest of the division looked like. It seems to me that if Covina is the No. 2 seed, they'll probably have to play Oak Park to get there. I wouldn't go too crazy on postseason projections for the Colts yet because the rest of the division is a question mark that nobody can answer. Covina is very, very good, though.

Thanks Kit, that's probably it.

There's 25 players that must fall in that catergory. Let's see , do you play the second string when you're down by 25 with 4 minutes to go or when you're up by 25 with 4 minutes to go in the game? Remember Kit it's JV football and shut outs at the JV level mean what exactly? Losing or winning by 17 as opposed to 24 means what exactly?

Kit, we were up 21-3 by half and won 28-3 or 35-3. You have 65 players on the JV team, 4 Jrs. start on the Varsity this year and 1 Soph. Last year's Varsity started 4 underclasmen, do the math.

I must have missed that part of coaching after 20 years. Maybe you missed the most recent blogs when people praised "Varsity" coaches for playing the second and third strings by half of blowouts.(Covina vs. San Dimas) (Damien vs. Diamond Bar, ect. ect.)

And I don't think you read it clearly he the "2nd" string MLB, not 3rd or 4th, and yes he plays and starts for the scout team at MLB and makes plays. He's a 15y.o Soph, 5'8" 195lbs and should top out at 6',rock solid muscle and can run. He plays on the kickoff team because a fellow player switched with him because "he" plays DT and FB. I think it was just a classy act of kindness on Austin's part and appreciated by my son. Again my "point" was that the coaches told him he was going to play, called him over in the second quarter to go in, and told the team that everyone was going to be rotated.

Invite you to a game this Thurs at Damien, maybe you'll have a different point of view. Not really looking for a response as much as venting. Clearly my bad, just broke my heart to see him trust his coaches and see the affect it had on him "that" night.

But I thank you for your perspective, most bloggers understood my point/pain and did not respond fot two days! But you did. In the end, I'll find comfort knowing Justin Luiten (6'4" 285) and Brad Walsh (6'6"245) never played more than a couple of plays, at the end of games, their Junior years and are now "STARTING" as part of the "BEST" Defensive Line in SGV bar none. Both probably will make 1st team ALL League by season's end, so what do I have to complain about. I heard alot of BS about Luiten not playing last year and said it was BS that he wasn't playing more at the beginning this year but look at him now-HE DOMINATES! God only knows the ass whoppings bruises he must leave on those that have to deal with him in league. ( There is NO substitute for playing time.)

If you read my most recent blog about Salesian Sr. Rafael Recendez who died after weightlifting on Tues. I don't have much to complain about. My brother is the defensive coor. there so I know 1st hand their pain.

Promise not the vent like that again. It was just my parental fustration that got me going. Is he good enough to start? Maybe only playing time works that out. I know he's big enough and strong enough and fast enough to play OG, DT, MLB,WSLB, SSLB, FB.

End of my rant and buried my fustration enjoying Luiten kick the tar out of Chino and seeing his family enjoy his success. By the way you coming to the Pizza Blast! Hope we have a big turnout!

Damien Dad,

Am I reading your blog correctly? Your kid doesn't get a lot of playing time, and you blame his coaches? Maybe...he's not as good as you think.

One last thing before I hear the stupid your kid doesn't play coward statements. I've been at Damien four years, not two like the "nut" who always has something "stupid" to say!

If it wasn't for Coach Morrison sending Coach Fed down to JV, and he's a very skilled, solid defensive mind, this JV team learns next to nothing on defense. Yesterday they left the starting line up in the whole game. Ask youself does Zac deserve 6 total plays in 6 games! When he's the second string MLB and plays scout LB all the time! After that BS with the freshmen team, and the blog drama this year he's played no more than 14 plays in 14 games over two years, that's just stupid.

They should have hired Coach Jim Duffy, yes Duffy's dad. He coached for years at the JAA level with West Covina and I've seen his players across the SGV landscape and they're ALL fundamentaly sound, aggressive and hit like a ton. Ralph Diaz from Covina's a monster, Dominique Austin is Div I and Erik Valdivia Special teams baller play for Bishop Amat, Alex Thompson, Ryan Farrar played for Damien last year all learned the game with Jim Duffy as their coach. And I bet they're others on other SGV teams I don't know about past and present. Why he hasn't coached at Damien is a mystery. Maybe he's too qualified. God knows he's better than what they have now.

Same with Jake Cannon's dad who has years of high school coaching experience and played Big Ten basketball, coached most of last year's graduating class in travel basketball, coached at Chino last year and gets turned down to coach at Damien because he has kids on the team! (don't even go there!).

Maybe it's their character or some other BS that keeps these men from being hired as coaches. Doubt it they both work for the D.A.'s Office.

I've seen games where we're being blown out by 29(Glendora) and the starters stay in, we're beating people by 30, (Diamond Bar, Chino) and the starters stay in, it's a close game and the starters stay in! Against Ayala and Diamond Bar they put everyone in on defense with two minutes and both teams run one back for a TD (50 and 60 yrds.)and the starters go back in -that's just stupid! JV is were people get reps to prepare for Varsity. Just look at what happened when they gave the second string QB a chance at DB, he looked for real. Too bad he got hurt, but he'll be back and start again. Do we even have a second string offense other than at QB?

When a coach tells you you're practicing well and are going to play you trust that your coach is telling you the truth. When the starting MLB gets hurt and you practice all week with the starters and make tackle after tackle @ practice you expect to play more than two downs in the game. When you ask a coach if there is anything more to you can do to play, you trust your coach. When a coach tells you in the second quarter to get ready cuz you going in and you never do, do you still trust the coach? Coach Eric calls him with 30 seconds left in the game to go in on defense and Damien has the ball on offense and the clock runs out-that's just stupid.

I'm not bagging and the kids,(and in fact have made many, many comments to praise players for their play and mentioned those I thought should go to Varsity) or bitching to bitch (more fustrated than anything), but fair is fair and this not. This is just stupid.

Remember I'm saying this, not my kids. Leave it there for those that just HAVE to say something stupid.

Okay bleeder- It took you a long time to ask "3" questions but I see only one. Check back over the blogs and see I already answered the question before. D-Coor. Fair from Los Altos schemed a great game, Los Altos played a great game and Mendrun was coming off the bruise ribs. No excuses, he played the best he could and lost at the goal line. What's to argue. Every great player, or very good player gets "shut down" if that's a word you find comfort in. If you would have seen the SJB game before he was hurt he torched them all night with tough accurate throws. Hey his TEAM is winning, RB Chris Marine has 10 TDs in 3 games and the Damien Offense is becoming more balanced. What's the problem. It's a non issue. Look at Los Altos' 4 game slide, case closed. Damien plays them now Damien rocks them 42-21, hell what would Damien do to Walnut? They are both different teams now, don't you think?

Remember Damien now has a solid running game, is deadly in the redzone, has made 53 and 50 field goals, runs a four man front and has dismantled Claremont(smoked),CO(worked), Glendora (out classed),Ayala (TCB), Diamond Bar(played everyone) and plays Chino tonight, so we'll see. One game at a time, plus Damien doesn't have the grades, suspension or character issues that other valley schools seem to have.

Is Mendrun the best QB in the Valley? Haven't seen Bonita's Chavez so couldn't say. But I seen Mc D last night and he reminds me of Wilson great Ron Cuccia only stronger and plays a wicked LB. Plus Ron Cuccia had Steve Martinez (Wyoming) and a better defense. Is Michael Vick better than Tom Brady, Is Donavan Mc Nabb better than Drew Brees who knows? I've said it before "Systems, systems, systems make or break players" Mendrun in a West Coast Offense and it fireworks city. First he's a pure passer, great arm strenght, is a leader and is he better than Casteneda? Who knows, Who cares? Different teams different responsibilities. I'm a big Casteneda fan, big Mendrun fan and former sloppy QB myself so unless you played QB what would you know unless you've run a squad?

You going to the Pizza Blast?

But this arguement is what game 4 old? Nice try bleeder but let's work on supporting Amat against ND. My prediction is Amat 28- ND 32 close game, why because I hate to be a defeatist! Love what Verti is trying to do, know Coach Canales and Coach Spooner are getting players ready for Varsity, so there.

If Damien ever hired solid coaches at the Freshmen, JV level they'd have a dynasty. And no that doesn't mean me "NUT" case so let THAT go.

So much to comment on and no one honest enough to listen, green hacks out there damien is good football team and deserves a great deal of credit, nice to see them winning and making valley teams look strong.

But you still need to answer the 76 yds against Los Al shotty performance please answer direct question stop playing dodge.

As far as mendrun being better than bishops Qber of course he is thats not even a discussion issue here.

There are at least 5 great Qbers in valley who could put bishop over the top this year, and who are head and shoulders above bishops kid, we all know this. Not attacking the player just easy to see if were being football honest.

My question is why say this thats like saying brady quin better than west virginias Qber, of coure its a no brainer, now is Mendrun better than anyone else Qber, thats the question here.

In big games how has he faired, only game ive seen him in is the Los Altos game, and he looked like a reciever playing Qber, fast but no accuracy and many passes overthrown, and has a tough time throwing to his right or at least back then he did, clearly the Los Al kid way better that night.

Have seen the bishop kid twice not in the same league as the others, seen most of the Qbers in preseason top 6 and still hard to honestly decide whos best, Mendrun,Castanada,Mc Donough, now my question is at Qber, not multy position. That includes, please accuracy, timing, speed of delivery and of course who we have played against
We cannot throw out these important aspects of playing the position, and we need to include strength of schedule..

Does covina's Qber rack up more yards than mendrun if he played the same schedule as mendrun, i really dont think so now my opinion is only speculation but so is everyone else's, castanada has 18 tds against who damien st francis, and teams like that and thats in the air, why is throwing the ball so important because thats what the position is coached to do.

It is also my opinion that mendrun castanada or chase or even corillo for that matter would have far greater numbers than mc donough in that league and in that schedule, and also would be able to play both ways and be all leaguers at both positions.

Its kind of disrespectful to these schools and the players for adults to not aknowledge the strength of schedule and how tough it is to play against tough defenses week in and out, all these Qbers are good atheletes but I know somekids numbers would go way down if thier schedule were beefed up and some kids numbers would go way up if they had an easier schedule.

Thats why the daily news is still ahead of us here at least they have a small school section and a large school section.

WRITE BACK IF YOU'D LIKE DAMIEN GUY OR ANYONE ELSE, but please answer the QUESTIONS HERE.

FANatic is in the house!

Aram,

A lot of "anti-Tartan" posters on this blog don't realize Glendora has had to "re-build" the team after losing so many outstanding seniors/starters from last years team. Even with a re-building year, the Tartans have posted a impressive record against a very difficult schedule.

Aram, out of curiosity, do you know of any other Sierra league team or any league team for that matter, that had lost, as you put it for Glendora, their top passer, top receiver, top tackler, top rusher, etc.. and still post an impressive record with a difficult schedule?

Please enlighten us oh mighty one!

FANatic has left the Blog!

lets talk about bishop amats spectacular winning season their having........................o wait

Bleeder-

Make "3" concise points. I'll answer them. Just "3" without the name calling or non sense. Wasn't in the "flunkie" mess so don't go there.

You "in" for the "Season Ending Pizza Blast!"?

Might do well for your disposition. Anyway would like to get it started and Amat is always welcomed when football's on the table. Think you can be civil enough to attend without Mike having to feel he needs a Police "escort" to come down from those hills?

Don't know Mike and have had my own "run ins" with him but it'll be a good way of showing the kids the parents/alumni know how to act like adults. God knows this blog wouldn't illustrate that to them!

Remember just "3".

Where are you Damien fan oh where have you gone to, maybe another blog, still waiting for response from you to my earlier points, oh well I guess your just like Mike the Clown making crazy statements and then fading away and waiting for someone to rescue you.

Hey everyone im IKE the DRONE and your not.

Just my opinion but all little league baseball players coaches are Flunkies.

what a joke both mike the clone and you should get together, no fact hacks.

Just wondering...

Let's put the past in it's proper perspective.

How many games would any SGV team win that they lost this year in a rematch?

Amat- would you beat anyone of the teams that beat you this year? Carson, Valencia, Crespi, Hart

Los Altos-would you beat anyone of the teams that beat you this year?

Glendora, Bonita, Charter Oak, San Dimas?

Now does anyone think that Los Altos could beat Damien now? NO
Anyone doubt that Damien could probably beat SJB in a rematch? NO
Could Charter Oak, Glendora, Claremont beat Damien in a rematch? NO

I know Rowland and Covina sure believe Glendora got lucky and would welcome a rematch.

Hey Bleeder- WHO"S #1 (Hint : Their helmets are the same shade as you. Green ..as in green with envy!)

John- Carrillo better than Mendrun? No offense to the X-man but, Mendrun on Amat's team changes everything for your team. Mendrun on Glendora's team and well ...you get my point. Mendrun, throws a better deep pass, better arm strenght, throws a nasty fade (since freshmen year), runs better and is a undeniable team learder. No platooning or QB controversy at DHS.
Case closed. Don't be a hater. Anyone see the SJB game and still say Mendrun isn't Top 5 is suspect. Better yet rank the top ten QB's and see.

CT- Film doesn't lie. Good luck against Notre Dame. I hear they're a monster team. Maybe Amat steps up and becomes a giant killer. Remember if you beat Notre Dame, Amat is #1 in SGV ..again! wow!

As far a "experimenting" in the middle of a 3 game league...that's total nonsense! Remember Amat has alot of injuries, has only one "Austin" type player on the team and well...never mind it'll fall on deaf ears. Better yet name another Div I prospect on Amat's squad. I don't see 3!

MATMTWTBAG &
LancerBlueandGold,

We've seen too much of this trend at amat. It permeates the athleic department. Sit behind the girls BB bench sometime - even their coach swears like a sailor. But his girls play and he's got some connections so they look the other way. I don't think that Kendrena (the last baseball coach) or Lokar (the previous basketball coach were that way, but the school lost them. Lokar even fired an assistant that apparently was a really good friend because he couldn't stop coaching the kids in an intimidating manner.

We will see how interested coach Verti is in the future of this team, this Friday. With ALL of the injuries and absent players this week, will he play ALL of the second string and get a feel for what he has to look forward to, or will he keep them on the sidelines for emotional support? I can hear the excuses now, "It was ND's homecoming and we had to make a statement."Give me a break.

The skill positions especially, with most juniors in those positions seeing limited time thus far. We know we will have a talented backfield at RB and FB. What about QB? Still haven't seen either of those guys. Is he just going to look past these two next year like they never existed, and then go with a junior or sophmore? Is that the right thing to do? Shouldn't they both get the same consideration this years QB got? Its their job to lose, right. What happened to that Senior priveledge he talked about being so important earlier in the year? I guess it will be different. We'll see. Same with the WR position, barely a handful have played, even with all the injuries and demotions this season. It is just wrong on every level.

Defensively, we better get a good look at the soon to be starting LBs. They are going to anchor the D next year, especially in our current D scheme. Our DBs are in good shape, they just need a set of ear plugs with all the F Bombs and whatnot they hear on a daily basis.

It all starts with our hogs in the trenches, they need to be coached up and on a serious and intense offseason program, so we can have mutiple Austin's on the field.

LancerBlueandGold,

I too have witnessed the profanity coming from the coaches as far back as summer and passing league. There was our indicator there that this staff was not going to "COACH" but intimidate their players to understand their philosophy. That kind of coaching worked in the old days, but in todays day and age where kids are protected moreso by the law, a kid gets turned off by that kind of treatment and much more will refuse to listen to you because at that age they do not like to be embarrassed and will turn on you...Most teens this age will tune you out if you show them up.....nowadays a lot is done thru constructive dialog between coach and player...dont get me wrong when all has been explained and someone screws up due to lack of paying attention etc., then that is the time to repremand the player, the bench to sit for a couple of plays, then back out there...this cussing and swearing BS is not working....As a coach you have to get in your kids heads and sell your program to them. It is sad to see our bench have no action and to also see those so called SCOUT players get their a$$es kicked in practice just to make the starters feel good about their play....Altho I like to say I have seen Scout player lay the wood to some of these starters.....even players that are not considered Scout players are sitting and in practice look outstanding...then there is the "were going to get you in the game" lie they tell the scout and backup players...game is out of reach for us and we are still going with the starters til the end.....it makes no sense other than you dont want the score run up on you....who cares you are beat already....In a close game I see this starters only...In a lopsided losing game two things, you get to look at your bench talent and you rest your starters for the next game..

Hey Da Bears & Tommy T ....here's a bit of flash for you....

With all the hype surrounding certain players, i.e. pictures, articles, blogs.....we still never hear anything about the Great Defense of Rowland. Norys has been a tremendous leader for this team, yet where are his props! This is why he will recieve a College Scholarship for Football, because he is a great player. Also, a proven Team Player. I don't know him personally, but I watch him play, and being a coach for many years, I know talent when I see it.

Next, it's not my style to rag on a kid, and I won't...but P Chase is like a Deion Sanders Clone...he is all show boat but is afraid to hit. He is a mediocre QB at best...but, he has led Rowland to a winning record and that's what counts. Rene could play college if he got his attitude adjusted and decided it was time to grow up and be responsible. I have never seen a kid run as hard as he does. He hits the defender harder then the defender hits him. he is a very storng kid. I could see him playing in Junior College and then maybe something from there.

The Coaching needs to improve. Let's face it, my 5 year-old could have coached that game against Walnut. I can't believe Walnut beat Bonita. Rene ran all over the field. Walnut was small and was really never in the game.

Wilson will be a test, and West Co is next. But, Rowland cannot overlook Wilson. They need to be ready and that is up to Snyder & Co. Message to the Offensive Coach....Be ready to surprise the Wilson secondary. Everyone knows your a running Team....but mix it up. Be creative. Again, my 5 year old can stand on the sideline and call in the play..."Uh. let's give it to Rene up the middle, then call a no-huddle...repeat first play"

That's it for now, I will be rooting for Rowland as well....I am a fan of football and look forward to a Rowland Win. Hope you enjoyed your Halloween....you never know, I may have been lirking in your neighborhood.......Van Earl is Out!

MATMTWTBAG-you have so eloquently put the TRUTH in your last statement. I agree whole heartedly!

The Varsity coaching staff @ Amat doesn't have adequate leadership through Verti. Verti has allowed coaches to use profane language on the field since day one, although he himself uses colorful words to depict profane language, but doesn't use profanity. From his choice to abstain from the use of profane language he feels strongly about this. So, why isn't he making it known to his staff members, especially the F-word swearing defensive coordinator that it is not acceptable under his leadership?

This should be a simple item that requires simple correction. Why can't Verti deal with that? There are so many other small items that he has not dealt with that it is not surprising that he cannot or does not know how to deal with the much larger issues. I agree with another blogger that indicated he knew the job would be tough when he took it. Let's not forget he was former player and is an alum of Amat.

Verti would have been in a much better position at this point if he had taken help from experienced staff people. He would have written his ticket. He would be in a position to make history. He has so much talent on the sidelines that sit and rots each day, each game! He has dragged these kids through the mud, placing blame on them for his and his staff's mistakes. It is sad that a grown man who has been given the gift of molding young men to possibly play at the next level does not have sense enough to get to know the players he has and their abilities. Had he been able to do this then he would be considered a winner, a hero, the man without the cape who rushed in as a novice and saved the Amat football program. It is sad that Verti is so one-dimensional and so unsavvy that he has led this football team, program and players down losers lane for no reason other than he "does not think" this player is a this or cannot do that. It is a sad commentary.

I too am tired of the "we are young" /" We are getting better" / "We are banged up" excuse. That is a band aid of an excuse for this teams demise this year. We have the talent right now but like I said earlier our coaches are not getting the optimum out put from these kids. This is not due to lack of talent, it is due to lack of knowledge..I am not saying I can do better but I know there are other experienced candidate that can do the job better then the present staff we have....the only brite spot I can see is Verti and maybe Coach Zamano, the rest need to be replaced with more experience. Business is business and coach Verti needs to drop his buddies and move this team forward. I know it is tough on Mark Verti to make these decisions but it is time to grow up and protect number one "The Team"....Your holding the cards Verti make some coaching changes. As far as the "Mouth"....I for one think we have said enough about this topic. It was in bad taste for me to point out #37 in the program to state my point but I was just hoping it would open up some peoples eyes as to what kind of disarray this staff has the team in....It starts for the leadership on down with this team and I am sure as I stated before that if we would have brought "the Mouth" down to earth early and worked with him about team concept and accepting a smaller role, plus leading him into maturity with the team slowly, he may have learned and could be contributing right now for us. Need I say more again our coaches Lack of Experience. Older more experienced coaches have kids this age and have a rappore in talking to youg individuals. Younger minded less experienced coaches tend to fight the kid because they are kids themselfs...

Verti Fan,

You have contradicted yourself in saying that Vetri is a realy good coach and than going on to talk about the team not finishing blocks or executing. A real good coach(head coach) goes out and finds the supporting staff to acomplish this. He went out and hired a bunch of high school buddies.

I am sure that Verti is a real good offensive coach and works on details for the position that he coaches. Pollak was the same way, they need him back. I see a young coach that needs time to mature and if it takes letting go of one of his friends from the coaching staff that is not preparring these kids than so be it. A real good coach needs to seperate his friendship from the field. I keep hearing the same song, "we are young", We have the talent there and it is not too late this year to make a run. Two wins and we are in. A win against one of these power houses and maybe a wild card, strength of schedule. So coach stop with the we are young bit and give the kids credit and get in their heads that they can win.

As for the Mouth, is it true that Verti keeps asking this kid to come back to the Varsity. If it is true and he does not suit up it is time to say good bye to this kid. Every year parents are not happy with playing time for their kid, sometimes they are right and others are not. Sometime we have a bigger impression of our kids and many times the parents are not at practice to see what their child is doing. Who knows, in practice they may not be putting out. Just look at this year, the injury to Gaise gave others a chance and now the new injury gives someone else a chance. Injuries are a big part of the game, you need to keep your head up and when given the chance explode.

Mr. Volec,

Lets get on the Mendrum quotes, I was at the Los Altos vs Damien game. The kid can scramble but the 5-6 kid from LA showed him up and Rex Foss from LA may be small also but he showed up your defense also, this kid is a player. There may have been the one play at the goal line, but rest assured the better team won. LA played that game with heart and Damien played like they should have been bowed down to, and they got punched in the jaw. I have seen many QB's this year and Mendrum is not in the top 5, heck the Amat QB showed me more.

Verti Fan,

I don't feel anyone here is questioning Verti's efort. Its the decision making in game, as well as game preparation that is at issue.

MATMTWTBAG is right, CT is not the forum for those converstions, but I can assure you they do happen. Case and point, Michael Mancilla, who we both agree is a great kid from a great family was speaking to a family after the Crespi game. He was telling them how it "just killed him" to see their son on the sidelines and not playing. This is no rumor, I heard it first hand. He also said that he knew what this kid could do and "speaks to Verti regularly and didn't understand it. He new the kid could make a difference."It seems that the kid in question has worked out with Michael and other college players in the off season and really impressed them with his skill and work ethic. So much so, that Michael felt it necessary to bring it up. You would think an endorsement like that would go a long way, but I guess it fell on deaf ears.

Once again, effort is the the question, its decision making. If you ask any player on this years team, they will tell you they had the talent on the team to win EVERY GAME. Then they will tell you that the talent just wasn't used. i think Austin's father would tell you the same thing. You don't have to take my word, ask for yourself.

Mr VOLEK,

Were you even at the Damien Los Altos game what are you talking about, read the numbers skippy, mendrun 75yds passing and Castanada over 200.

Now are you saying that Damien is a Jr all american team, please respond to the numbers not your opion. Dont wright back I think or probably respond to the numbers.

This is why no C.I.F. titles for your boys, Los Altos smaller and possibly slower than Damien but still whiped the field with your boys, come on friend when your team meats a team that wants to get down and dirty they start blamming refs, your bigger, faster and likely stronger than Los Al but you still lost.

Why, this is the question you must ask yourself why, was it coaching was it the refs was it the little 5'7" Qber, what was it friend, in order for you to make that comment you made earlier about who is the best you need to start answering some questions.

Here is a little hint there is something inside of us that either rises or falls in a great time of stress its called heart and you dont measure it by size or inches.

Lastly in order for mendrun to be the best you must state that your coaching is not as good as Los Altos or that yor "D" line is worthless, you see you need to account for the low numbers and the shoty performance that night, very much had the fill of a 2nd or 3rd round playoff game.
Not to mention the running by your boy was almost all gained by one run in first quarter on second play of game against first time starter at corner who came up to tackle and would have been stopped short of a first but kid young and made a mistake, no excusses here just the facts man a jr missed the tackle. Other than that very subpar performance for the best in the valley.

D.E.s from Damien 6'5" and 6'6" Qber from Los Al 5'7", while D.E.s from Los Al 6' and 6'1" and Qber from Damien 6'2" , oh I get it your saying that the recievers from Damien arent worth a dam oh thats different, I thougt that it was because all of Mendruns passes were high or behind the recievers, gee I didnt understand you at first.

As far as I know most parents in CT hold in lots of what they have to say because come Friday nite after a loss that parking lot is buzzing with complaints about what we just witnessed after a loss. I am a firm believer that we are not accustomed to losing at Amat and Verti knew what he was getting into taking this high profile job. Most want to keep this fresh young mind but we also want experience around him. his present staff do not look like HS coaches...C'mon man Coach Chewie was a good player and looks allot Bo Schembecler but I see him giving no instruction. I hear just chewing out yelling type instrution coming from Coach Devera...I see no instruction....Practice is to be run like a football camp where instrutions are given to you. Like when a coach demonstartes how to do something...If these coaches think that Jr. All American taught these players everything they are mistaked....from the first day I have not seen one coach other than Verti And Pollack reall get down to teaching...the others are along to ride coach Verti's coatails....Seriously that is our problem..lack of instruction...get in the treches with these kids show them.........You think Mater Dei or Servites coaching is letting their kids "just play"...no way they are teaching and getting the maximum out of their kids...is that happening at Amat ....go to practice and observe.....thats where we need experience around our young and gifted coach...Coach Verti you are the President now go out next year and put some good men around you. Do this not for yourself but for the kids that will see the difference next year and will come out and work their A$$ES off for you knowing they have a legit chance of winning....closing ,,dont you think the players know that they are being led by inexperience...trust me they know.....Fire the coach at a basketball game??WOW that is low but it is a cry out for help....THEY WANT TO WIN!!!!

Verti Fan (rare but he still has some)...Yes CT is always broken down with professionalism and class. Most will ask decent questions but this is not a press conference where you can ask anything. No one would want to put coach Verti on the spot with real questions. That would turn that room into a battle royal..........it is not about having stone it is about respect for him. There are lots in the room that want to get to the dirty details in the way the team is running etc but we cannot put this young man on the spot like that....not fair to him and CT would go on till the mid morning....Talk about o-line and not playing the whistle etc, well by game 8 I think our coaches should have that drilled and instilled in our kids minds already , dont you think?....down year lack of talent?...we have the talent and we have been in contention the last 5 games from carson down...but we are lacking something...has our staff not figured that out yet....granted I know Verti is trying his damnest but we have got to find the answers to this before next year...

Chalk Talk was a blast as usual! Coach Verti is really a pretty good coach. I like what he's trying to do with his players and the schemes he's running. Second time there and as always the Amat faithful are very respectful and ask their questions without feeling intimidated. Class guys from what I see.

Great to see former player Michael Mancilla on the field again. Great kid, fantastic family! Austin was beast! Dad was all smiles and "could do better's" but I thing Austin is for real. He'll be fine. Loved the play of #81, heard he's a Jr. so it'll be fun to see him develop. Great instincts and strong outside contain technique.

Overall the Amat squad is doing well for the players they have. It's a down year, in terms of talent, size and speed but, you gotta start somewhere. It's basically the same thing as the last time I went. Players need to step up and make plays. Hit the hole and don't break outside all the time. Stay on your man on blocks "thru" the whistle. Know your reads and make the play. Punish people, ect. ect!

For example an O-lineman blocks his man well and the running back breaks outside for twenty yards and is pulled down by who? The man who was blocked well at the line of scrimmage but ran down field, at an angle, and made the play! That's why in a nutshell Amat loses games at this level. It's that extra effort. Carson did it as well. RB does a wheel route and the DB/LB doesn't pick him up, breakdown -6! It happens just enough on film to change the course of the game. Players not having that edge or commitment to play thru the whistle. Crespi had it Amat doesn't consistently. Is that coaching? No Ithink it's players hearing negative BS all the time, on the blog, at practice, before games and certainly after games and not BELIEVING 100% in their coaches. YOU GOT TO BELIEVE OR YOU"RE LOST! Score was 7-7 and already the players body language is betraying them. Stay positive for once and see if it helps-it certainly can't hurt!

One last thing. If I were the AD of Bishop Amat and some "knucklehead" football players came to a basketball game with signs that read "FIRE THE COACH!" They would all be suspended, ON THE SPOT!! Put up for review, disciplined and if warranted asked to leave! I would not tolerate that kind of classless gargage and misguided arrogance. That's how you win ! Bishop Amat know your worth and ask the classless asses to leave, you're better off without them. Man the nerve and arrogance of those players!

As far as I see the problem is Amat not knowing what to do with the little talent they have left. They're so scared of losing "them" they're handling them with kid gloves. WHO NEEDS WHO!

I remember reading what Giants TE great Mark Bavaro said after being notified that Gerry Faust had been let go by Notre Dame. His comment, "I didn't go to Notre Dame because of Gerry Faust! I went to Notre Dame because of Notre Dame!"

That used to be Bishop Amat's legacy.
Win Friday and it's a 3 way tie for first place in league! Imagine that!

The real deal on "the mouth" might be that his sister is a pretty good basketball player. We know how girls hoops has ruled the roost with the amat VP/assistant coach being married to the head girls coach, so they were probably afraid they would lose the sister if they boot the bro. They were already walking the tightrope with the McCarthy girl who might be their best player and has a ticked off family due to the boys basketball fiasco.

When punches are thrown and players calm down what happenes is the severity of your actions gets evaluated.

For better or worse the severity of the player's injuries dictates the punishment. The "mouth" gets expelled! Look at the player's eye and tell me that that did not warrant explusion.

That's the difference. Pretty soon you'll read more stories about this misguided kid and when will it be enough? Even Randy Moss was asked to leave a few schools (ND and Florida St) before he settled in at Marshall.

Some people never learn because no one takes the time to make an adult decision that's in the best interest of the kid, the other students and the administration.

As as Verti's mom being the secretary, well that's soooooooo low as to not warrant a response. "Have you no decency, man!"

If all three of you really know football and could do better, quit running your mouths and apply for the job.

Its real easy to sit behind your BS and pass judgment.

I would love to see all three of you come forward with some "Stones" and make an appointment with Verti and the Administration.

Your a disgusting disgrace to the coaching staff, players and school administration.

Booing High School

You pegged this guys, right on!

Voleck

Now to my point, those other 5 qb's have better stats becuase they play jr. all-american teams. Imagine if Mendrun played those teams.. it would be disgusting. Ive seen all the top qb's play and he still impresses me the most

WHAT AN INTELLENGIENT REPSONSE!

The bottom line is Mendrum's stats are well below the leader.

You can what if's all you want but the stats dont lie!

who knows why "the mouth" is even still in school. those that know, ask around about the cell phone/basketball locker room incident last year. why the baskteball coach took him back after that shows how inept and gutless he is, as well. but of course, another product of nepotism and a Msgr hire.

AMATaddict,
Lets see here the "MOUTH" size 6'3 175. #37 5'7 147. not exactly a fair match...do you see where this is going?....can you spell BIG "MOUTH" bully. Yes #37 had no right to attack but the Mouth has been the disruption from day one before pictures were taken...then continues to BS around to the point where they dismissed him to JV squad at practice for disruption... then his antics during the St. Paul game. then the outburst by the Senior linebacker after the Carson game......yet you claim Verti has asked him back.? for what? to lose what he has left on this team because most of the kids on the team cannot stand this immature kid and would quit....I dont think Verti is that dumb to run that risk of having star players quit over this Sophmore. We were doomed from day one when this kid was given (not earned the starting reciever spot)... His head blew up....#29 the junior may not have that Terrel Owens size as the MOUTH but #29 is faster and has better hands and is well liked by his teammates....everyone knew going into training camp that #29 was by far better at the position then MOUTH but it was the coaches whom did this because of size. It just goes to show how coaches get this tunnel vision when it comes to size for football players.... coaches fault here because there was no real evaluating of talent.....it was Big target "your my starter"....that is BS......I am hoping the Mouth sticks to Basketball because he really destroyed this team but not by himself but with the help of the coaches....

I for one cannot understand why "the mouth" is still playing at all. This kind of behavior would not have been tolerated during my years at Amat. I have never condoned nor understood trash talk on or off the field. If he is still there there, that does say a lot about the coaches, and belive me, it's not good.

BOOING HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES,

No bashing here, I just want to correct a couple of statements you made:

"As far as the recent Crespi loss. I had a feeling that the team would be distracted with all the talk about the "mouth" and the kid being assaulted and some Amat blogger pointing out the players face and #."

First, this incident occurred at the beginning of the season, before the first game. That is why the picture is in the program. Team pictures are taken BEFORE season starts. "The mouth" has been off the team for a few weeks now.
Second, the "assault" was actually a fight between the two because "the mouth" was mouthing off and the other kid took offense from a comment and took a swing at "the mouth". The mouth responded and that was the result. The other incident with the senior was basically the same scenario.

I'm not defending "the mouth". He should be punished, but someone talking about you does not give you the right to take a shot at them. Its like the old saying, "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me".

"Why the "mouth" wasn't arrested or kicked out of school speaks volumes to the "winning is EVERYTHING" attitude that seems to permeate most posts and Amat bloggers. I guess if the mouth is a good basketball player than all is forgiven? Somehow I can't see the assaulted kid cheering in the stands."
This statement totally contradicts the following statement:
"maybe he doesn't play the second stringers because of attitude regardless of ability"

As a coach, you can't tolerate this behavior. 1st or 2nd string, football or basketball, it should not matter.

By the way, the coach has asked "the mouth" to return to varsity on more than one occassion, but "the mouth" refuses because he doessn't trust the coach to do what he says. A lineman also quit for similar reasons and had to be asked by coach Verti to come back. Isn't that a sad commentary?

Like I said, I just wanted to set the record straight.

Darn, I meant to say "they DO NOT" call......
