West Covina dismisses Hockenhull from team ...

Tyler Hockenhull was one of WestCo's biggest weapons.
West Covina coach Mike Maggiore confirmed Monday that running back/receiver/defensive back Tyler Hockenhull has been dismissed from the team for disciplinary reasons. Hockenhull has missed time this season due to suspensions. Sophomore Demond Wallace has also missed time due to suspensions and injury, but he's expected to rejoin the team in an undefined capacity.
CAUTION: What you are about to read is Aram Tolegian's opinion and little disclaimers like this are now necessary (by my choosing) due to the many sensitive eyes we have on this site.
Aram's opinion: But first, please read the disclaimer above before getting upset.
Aram's opinion Take II: Now that you've read the disclaimers above, you're probably ready for some opinion on this matter. Here goes: West Covina is experiencing the season that never was. The SGV can only hope that the talented seniors who remain i.e. Shaun Rosenthal, Nick Field, George Munoz and William Wallace (among others) can get things together and put together a run in the San Antonio League and CIF playoffs. This would've been a very good team had everything clicked. Clearly, it has not. But there's still time. It should be remembered that West Covina started league 0-2 in 2004 and came back to win CIF. The players, coaches and most importantly the Bulldogs' fans are getting gypped out of what should've been a banner year. WestCo has some of the grittiest players in the Valley i.e. Field, Rosenthal and Will Wallace ... they deserve better.

" I knew it! W.C falls apart again. All hype once again"
Other than this year, When has West Covina ever been hyped, they usually don't get the hype that S.Hills, Los Altos, Charter Oak, Damien & Amat get, no knock against those schools cause they have good programs, & probably deserve the hype they get.
The hype that West Co got over the summer & at the beginning of the season was legit as the prospects of the season were good with the players that were returning, and they proved it in the first three games, believe me if they hung with Mater Dei for 4 qtrs they could have played with anyone in the SGV, by wk 2 they were missing 2 starters & stll handled a decent Baldwin prk. team their worst defeat to date, 26 to 6, but suffered more injuries, by wk three they were missing 3 starters & still beat a Monrovia team that has been tearing up their opponents ever since, & could beat several teams in our top ten. When they played Rancho C, thats when the discipline problems arose to go along with the injuries.
Who knew at the beginning that they would have these disipline & injury problems to key players,
but at that time the hype was legit.

I knew it! W.C falls apart again. All hype once again, and you missed Rowland.
Rowland is the real deal. Unless they lose some kids to grades.
Remember it is all about academics. Without it you go now where!

Where is the wantabe Politician AD MIKE MANZO? He as ATHLETIC DIRECTOR should have taken control and not let this kid continue.
Not surprising though.... kids parents are probably paying Manzo's BMW payment... Another kickback for that sleezeball.... not surprising.
Feel bad for Coach V. He's an upcoming/bright young coach, who has NO SUPPORT from his AD!!

Concerning "THE MOUTH"...(GOOD NAME BY THE WAY)....It is sad that he is bitter and now keeps talking his trash about the varsity and trying to spread it thru the JV...I am pretty sure three things will happen to him next year. 1.)He will not even come out and stick to basketball. He most likely is playing because his parents are making him due to all the costs that are associated with being on the football team.
2.)He will come out for varsity and be in the dog house from day one. A leopard does not change spots and this kid talks allot of trash so he will not change. The juniors right now will be seniors and that includes Dominique Austin and a loaded group of talent. I dont think the coaches will stand for it.
3.)He will be a outcast next year. The players will treat him like crap because they will not forget what he did as a sophmore.
***wonder how this kid does in the classroom??**

I am the ORIGINAL Bleeds Blue and Gold, accept no substitutions.
I knew Phillips went to BP but I had no idea he started out at WC. WOW, it history repeating itself? What a waste of talent but the sad part is that he was not the first nor will he be the last as we are witnessing now at WC, RHS, and possibly Amat. At least WC and RHS coaches had the ball$ to throw these punks off the teams but Amat? NO! This guy gets a starting slot on JV!
I talked to a JV player yesterday and asked him about "The Mouth". He said that this guy IS STILL talking crap about certain players on the varsity squad and that they are no good. WTH?
I feel sorry for next years squad if this guy is on it. I'm willing to say now that if he is on the team next year, he will tear it apart from the inside out and you bet your bottom dollar I will report it right here AND use his name instead of giving him anonimity. He is not well liked on JV either from what was told to me.
Anyway, these situations have a long way to be played out, let's just see if they get done the right way.

Good point Blue and Gold.
How could anyone forget the unflappable Lawrence Phillips? Sadly for SGV football fans, Google in "Who is most likely to end up in jail or dead among former NFL players and College players" and you will see his face alonside Clarrett. What lessons had this former BP Brave, former Cornhusker, former Ram learned from his mistakes and admonishments.....NOTHING!!!
Imagine had Mr. Philips played his cards right, ...MVP.....Super Bowl Ring....NFL superstar...playing golf with the Juice...collecting rare exotic cars and showcasing his multi-million dollar crib on MTV, perhaps even a role model????? This kid had it all but chose ignorance over intelligence, chose arrogance over wisdom, chose to have a Parole Officer over a sports agent, chose a hard, cold 5X8 cell next to a smelly toilet bowl over a million dollar crib.
The important question is what life lessons can promising but troubled young athletes learn from Mr. Philips?

Sometimes players are cancers on a team and coaches have to make tough decisions. I coached one year and had to drop 3 starters before a season ending tournament.
The parents of these kids made a big fuss and the Principal called me into his office and in front of the parents asked me to reconsider my decision to keep them off the tournament travel roster. I turned it on the Principal and told him that it was he who had a decision to make. " It's very simple. If these boys are allowed to play in the tournament you need to find a new coach. Because they were kicked off for the cardinal rule of sports. It is non-negotiable." The parents and Principal asked what did they do that was so bad? "Actions detrimental the the welfare of the team. That's what they did. And I'm not allowing good kids who bust their busts everyday and give me everything they have to have to tolerate that kind of behavior. And that final! So do you need a new coach for tomorrow or not!" Meeting over.
We played in that tournament and lost every game. We fought and battled and lost every game in the final seconds. At the end of our last game the director took the microphone and acknowledged our grit and determination. He handed out the Tournament MVP to a our QB the night before the Championship game. How rare is that!
All 3 of those "dismissed" players went on to tryout for Amat teams in High School and either quit or did not make the cut. They never lettered at Amat.
Amat should have sat that kid down for the year for "Actions detrimental to the welfare of the TEAM". Maybe then the players/parents would have rallied around the staff because standards are nothing if they are moved around to accomadate talent.

This bum at Amat shoulda been dropped like a terrorist trying to board a plane. Feel sorry for the JV kid that transferred out because of this clown taking aways his playing time. Saw this kid play against St. Paul and witnessed trouble written all over him with his mouth and overzealous on field demeanor.
Amat is class run program and do not need to lower its standards to retain this kind of trashy talent, let them go elsewhere. I think there is a position available for him at LA or CO.

Bleeds B&G,
You know whom I am talking about and in my days the whole team would have kicked his A-- together. No exceptions.......I am glad the LB took a stance there. There were others who told the coach if he is back I am not playing for this team...these were starters too......coach had to do it....I am glad he did it before league but I am with you that he should have been booted off the entire program and not go down to JV and take a spot from a kid who has been busting his A-- and most likely is a good student and respects his coaches....this is not fair at all.....This kid is a basketball player by the way and brings that trash talking basketball players attitude to the football field........It starts with the parents and it appears that there is no control there. Hope his parents learned something from this and got in his face....I sincerly doubt it tho...........It is a privilage to play Football at Amat starter or not. To wear that uniform and that golden A on your helmet is pride in yourself and the School. I am Hoping this kid does not go out for the team next year or even transfers...I would hate to see us go through what we went thru this year with this kid next year. If he wants to act like he is in the hood make him go play in the hood.....or go play pick up basketball in the hood and trash talk there but not at Amat, we stand for higher standards at Amat..

I am the ORIGINAL Bleeds Blue and Gold, accept no subsititutions.
MATMTWBAG, I know EXACTLY which player you are talking about. I heard that kid got his a$$ kicked by a LB in the locker room after one of his rants. In my days at Amat, that punk would have been booted from the program all together instead of being rewarded a starting position on the JV squad. So what's he going to do now? Infect the JVs with his BS?
These coaches can't handle the big heads some of these kids have. They need to send a message that you are either a part of the team or get the hell outta Dodge. I feel sorry for the kids who bust their butts out there day in and day out only to see this punk drop down and take their playing time away. I know of one kid already who left the JV squad just two weeks ago because of the changes that happened because of this and tranferred to another school. Too bad, he was a good, talented, kid too. He just got screwed by this sad situation.
Now the question is: If this punk comes in next year with the same attitiude, what then? drop him down to JV again? I don't think so. So what if they let him play, does the team go downhill because of him?
As far as those kids from WC and Rowland, if what they say is true, just tell them these two words - Lawrence Phillips.
Posted by: Bleeds Blue and Gold | October 25, 2006 10:04 AM
I my playing days, you screw up once and you're booted off the team period, that simple no questions asked and no one felt sorry for you.
Nowadays, it almost seems politically incorrect to just kick a kid off the team without first consulting with the school attorney.
Yes selfishness, immaturity and peer pressure can get any young athlete/kid into trouble. However good manners, morals, ethics and discipline should always start at home starting with their PARENTS!! Coaches face these challenges every season...but Coaches are not Dr. Phil and they can only do so much given their resources to counsel and discipline...so when everything in their power has been exhausted to help these troubled athletes straighten out their lives to no avail, then they have no other alternative but to cut out the cancer destroying the team!!
Let this be a valuable life lesson for this kid.
Good decision Coach M.

Amat had this problem as well this year. We had a talented Soph. WR...6'3 with some good raw talent. Coaches mistake tho. they fell in love with that size and instantly made him a starter going in. Well this sophmores head could not even fit in his helmet much less the doors to his classrooms....walk around campus like he was king SH--........did not care about the team but only himself....today he has been kicked off the team and is playing at the JV level.....The coaches should have seen that immaturity right away and worked this kid in slowly and they would probably have a good player playing for them right now...this kid single handedly almost destroyed the team....glad he got demoted and this did not get out of hand...at least the coaches finally recognized it and did something about it.........Parents as well as players all knew this kid was the cancer of the team and are happier that he is gone and that the team is one again. He will be up playing varsity next year....hope he has learned something because coaches only give you so many chances. HS football is a team game not a individuals game....allot of this could be coming from watching T.O. and Keyshawn and their sideline antics.....hoping more coaches when in put in this situation with a star caliper player, boot him to teach him the team is always bigger than the star player......just like in the movie Hoosiers when the coach elected to play with 4 and bench the star player that was giving him trouble.

Attention all high school footballers!
Every year it's the same thing. Players think their "fame" is forever or entitles them to special favors. It isn't and it doesn't!
Every year, after football season is over, I see Senior football players attend basketball games with their lettermen jackets and see that look on their face. When they realize "their" time has past them by and the adulation and attention is GONE. It's sad but when football season is over, it's over for many seniors! They will never play again!
Make the best of your football experience, and that's all it is, and enjoy every sprint, every hit, every cheer and every balling out! Win and lose as a team!
Too bad players let their egos and weaknesses get the best of them, especially seniors! Well life is about learning, Just look at Maurice Clarett or closer to home Lawrence Phillips! What a waste!
Posted by: Some kids never learn | October 24, 2006 1:30 AM
Well this is too bad for this kid but some kids get big headed when they are a star in HS and think they walk on water. The coach did the right thing by booting him off............there are kids whom work too hard all summer to have someone think they are bigger than the team and ruin it for everyone..............I hope all athletes learn from this....It is a shame when you have programs that let the stars get away with it....in this case it is a good example that the coach calls the shots not the player.
Posted by: MATMTWTBAG | October 23, 2006 10:26 PM
This is what happens when these players take it in all in their head, and forget morals, discipline and school. Without schooling youre NOTHING!
West Covina you can still hold on and win....

Aram,
You don't have to explain to me! You did absolutely nothing wrong.
So what, let them flip out your doing your job damn it! Sometimes when a boat gets rocked it makes people with tunnel vision open their eyes to what's really going on around them.
I had my own foray into controversy within my own "bagpiper" family. I made some waves on the Tartan "It's a Small World" ride. I was hearing things, ask around (not at the coffee shop either) and found out they were true and stated them here. Hell I'm the new Eddie Haskell amongst all of the Tartan "button wearers".
Granted you’re a journalist and I'm just "Mike the Clone" on some little blog and I do know the difference.
Oh well some people are soft, way to stick to your guns big guy!
I'm still waiting for the Aram & Nisha show!
I am Out!

Definately a major setback for the Bulldogs season, its kind of sad that he's ruined his senior year this way when he had so much potential on the field & it looked like he had a lot of fun when he played. I would imagine this would end any chances he had for college ball also. Hockenhull was a big threat for the bulldogs,he was almost like having another Will Wallace on the team, I can remember at least 7 TD's in the 5 games that he played this season. When the defense would key on Will Wallace, Tyler was there for a big play, or a TD.
Sad to say, but Hopefully by having this great privilage that he seemed to love taken away from him, He will realize there are consequences to what he does & he'll straighten out in the things that really matter in life.
Hopefully Demond Wallace will see the seriousness of this & straighten out, for his sake & the teams, & hopefully he can step up & replace what they are losing in the loss of Tyler.

Mike the Clone,
I've never held back and I'm not about to start. I put out a legit news item late last week and all of a sudden people start flipping out like I am calling out the coach and just repeating something I overheard at the coffee shop.
Hockenhull being dismissed and Rene Small being suspended for a game is news, whether people like it or not. I thank Coach Maggiore for commenting where others would not and I think you can see it makes for a much better story. You can read what Maggiore said in tomorrow's Tribune.
Posted by: Aram | October 23, 2006 6:25 PM
Nothing like having a different opinion huh A.T.
And too bad talented kids just throw it all away and don't understand that there things like consequences for their stupid actions
I had to laugh A.T. at the disclaimer!
Out!

Man what a big loss for the bulldogs, but I will be the first to say that things happen for a reason Tyler will learn to do better and get stronger with whatever is happening and the BULLDOGS will work harder and stronger to get to the top. Keep the faith and good things will come.
WEST COVINA will fight to the end. I hope Wallace will learn from this example as well.
TIME TO STEP UP......................
