Northwest Division Playoffs

Mike McDonough is ready to give the Northwest Division some pain.

NOTEWORTHY: Covina gets the No. 2 seed it deserved. The Colts are the highest seed of any Tribune team.

Aram's prediction: I have Oaks Christian and Harvard-Westlake meeting in one semifinal. Covina and Oak Park will meet in the other. The finals will be Oaks Christian against Covina, which I don't have to tell you who will win.

Aram's sleeper: There isn't one. This division will be very formful.

Thank you for your kind words. We will be there to support your Colts along the way.

The Senior Offense and Defensive lines of Morro Bay were simply just too strong for our young lines. They were good size kids and strong up front.

A perfect example of what the weight room is all about in the off season. Our boys really give it their all, but couldn’t out muscle them. Plus we had three interceptions that killed us again!

Oh, we’ll everyone seemed to make the road trip fun, and the kids had a good experience.

On Friday they went to Hearst Castle which was a good educational day!

Good Luck!

Tyler went out in the first quarter. OC STILL won with a score of 70-9. I'll repeat that...70-9! They have depth. Now they are dedicating the season to their injured star. Scary.

My take..I'm a Covina supporter 100%..BUT..if Covina comes out flat in the first quarter like they did last night with the rest of their games they will dig themselves a big hole. OC averages 21 points in the first quarter alone.

Congrats to Covina for their first round victory over Nordhoff. I predict a final score of Covina 32
St. Josephs 21 for round 2.

Well..since they left out our league in the new blog..I guess I'll post here.....

First I'd like to say hats off to San Dimas and Baldwin Park for their seasons. I know nothing can be said to make up for your losses last night but you went down fighting and represented the SGV with pride. To the San Dimas parents and fans that made that trip...I have the utmost respect and admiration for the dedication that you showed for your kids. In my book you and your kids are both winners.

Covina you now have a shot to win this. Marc Tyker injured his leg and now it is confirmed that he suffered a compund fracture in his leg and now his season is over. Now you have a shot cause OC is just 1 demensional all passing. Go COLTS!!!!!!1

for crying out loud people have their opinions. there IS this thing called FREEDOM OF SPEECH. As a matter of fact, this is what makes football/sports great... rivalries and trash talking. can't stand the head, get outta the kitchen. OR BETTER YET, do your talkin on the field and prove them wrong.

your comments remind me of that one episode of southpark where Stan's dad gets into a fight with all the other little leaguer's dads from other teams. take a chill pill homie.

I spoke to Tyler Barbone's Dad yesterday.

The doctor put a small cast back on for his safety. Wrist is 85% healed.

Believe me, this kid will go regardless of the situation.

Go Saints and good luck to all VVL teams.

Stanuton, your a real joke putting these kids through this geographical trip and any other league that has to endure the same crap! Stanuton needs to be FIRED!!!!

No major injuries, TBone does not have the cast anymore. He told me it still hurts, but he will play against MoBay. He was the only player for the Saints who was nursing an injury.

We have to find a way to get Jon Joe involved big time tomorrow. Just think if our running game set up the pass, or the pass set up the run.

The word on Morro is big tackles and guards, good size LB's, but not necessary real fast. Speed may get them from the outside.

As far as injuries, we only know Tyler Barbone will still be playing with broken wrist. Can't keep this warrior out!

Good Luck Braves and Colts

Looking at the numbers and they are just numbers, San Dimas matches up with Morro Bay. I hope that they are healthy. I think if they can pound the ball with Nico that should open up the passing game for Jon Joe. SD has a good chance to win. I wish them all the luck.

Absolutely nothing wrong with "Dan's" comment at all...."my son is a colt" ..way too sentimental with your asking him to not comment or keep it all to himself. Stuff like Dan's comments below help inspire upsets. This is the fuel that fuels the fire in underdogs, hearing over and over and over again how they have no chance against a certain team. It is commonplace, around the valley and the southland, and nationally that Oaks Christian will run right thru this divison on their way to the title. I have read some other verbage on other sites where they have no one coming within 40 points of Oaks. and that in some eyes may be taking it lightly. look at last years scores on their way to the title, no one came within 35-40 points of them, and they have relatively the same squad this year, and one year wiser!
If im a covina fan, which im not, but i am a SGV football fan, i am inviting all this sort of "no chance, covina cant beat Oaks, they will get blown out, they are playing for 2nd place" stuff...its what drives upsets.
I mean Covina is the valleys best bet to make a finals appearance, and if they are there, ill be there pulling for them. My heart says Covina, but my mind says Oaks.
Good luck all....

Dan..I for one don't see anything wrong with your posts. You gave your views and this is what this blog is all about..predictions, views, etc....
Again, I don't see anything disrespectful in any way. I'll be the first to admit that at times I have been thinned skinned with a couple of replies that I have given on these boards. I just step back, take few, and try to see where the other person is coming from. Sometimes what I perceive as a slam is just my built up defenses going into overdrive..but again, that's my fault.

I will agree with you that Oak Park is a damn good team and Oaks Christian is a monster. I think Oak Park is a pretty good matchup and if we ever get to Oaks Christian..well...I just hope that Covina gets that far first..we'll cross that bridge when the time comes....but OC is a great team. No one can deny that.

"My son is a Colt" I'm not here to go back & forth arguing with another poster so this will be my last post on this. First of all, the post I made, well post like that are all over this board, its nothing but a prediction on your school,& if a post like that bothers you then you have some very thin skin. Second, where have I ripped or talked crap about anyone on this board let alone somebodys kid, I don't get into personal attacks on this board. There is nothing wrong with saying Oak Park & Covina would be a toss up, cause in my opinion I really don't know who would win between these two, I am familiar with Oak Park cause I work with someone who's son play's there, & I know Covina will most likely have there hands full if & when the two teams meet. As for the blowout by Oaks Christian prediction, again , that was no insult or rip on Covina it was just another prediction, Believe me if Oaks C. can blowout St. Bonaventure 59 to 13 [ who at the time was ranked
# 2 in the state] what would one think they could do to Covina or for that matter any other team in the sgv, but anyway, if the favored team always won the game what would be the use of playing, good luck to Covina & the rest of the sgv.

I totally agree with you. I am a SD fan and well family member.
If SD can keep the ball in their posession and block so Barbone can run run run...than we have a chnace. The team that showed up to take the win over Pomona was not the same team that lost to Covina. I was very proud of the way the team played as a "team".

If they keep that up on Friday and the Coach listens to what the above says...MAKE ADJUSTMENTS where needed, we have a huge chance of taking it!!!
Plus we should take it because it is complete BS that the kids have to go that far. If anything they should meet half way?!?!

OK guys listen up- Ricky you played amazing last Friday- do the damn thing again.
And I think iit was #23 (or 26) sorry I don't know your name...but you were on that ball like I have never seen before.
Jon Joe-You have lots of angels watching over you...play your heart out.
DF-Borzilerli (Jake) and Barbone (Tyler) keep the Defensive team in line. Do not let those boys get by you...It doesn't matter there size-you guys can do it. Look at how Carter went- they only one by an inch- hold that line!!!

Last and definetly not least Nico Barbone- No worries for you- we all can tell that it is just a talent that comes naturally. So do what you do best and kick some a$$....

As for Oaks Christian, what can I say? They are probably the best team in Calif. Covina will see that first hand if they make it that far, and if they do make it to the finals props to them, now

Can Mike McD come up big in these games or will the opposition key on him and make Covina look normal. As the games get bigger the competition becomes physically stronger. Can McD continue to go both ways and not get injured along the way.? just a thought.

H-W only beat Carson by 1 point, and they only lost to Pasadena ( first game ) by 1 point. Covina fans can relate to losing the first game of the season and and are unanimous in wishing they could play that game over. I'm sure H-W feels the same about Pasadena. H-W is a V-E-R-Y respectable team. BP has their hands full but have the talent for an upset. Going to be a lot of scouts watching Harris
this Friday and I truly believe that he wants to do a great job filling out his resume.

Also..on the looking past the Nordhoff game for Covina... I can't do that. Taking one game at a time. Kinda like being on New years Eve and looking ahead to next Christmas. Gonna stick with what's on our plate right now...

Lets get by Nordoff first! We have along way to go before I worry about what field I playing on 3 weeks from now.

First of all i would like to say congrats to the three VVL teams for making the playoffs. This is my break down. Covina is hands down the best VVL team in the post season. The Saints face an uphill battle along with the Baldwin Park Braves, but i beleive that the Braves can give Harvard Westlake a run for their money. The only way the Braves will have a shot at winning Friday night is if the offensive line shows up to play and division 1 college recruit Aaron Harris has a career game. If Harvard Westlake stops the Braves running game it's pretty much over. The Braves must also find a way to penetrate Harvard Westlake's OL since they post a quartet of linemen all bigger than 6'3 and 250lbs on their roster. The braves have nothing to loose and everything to gain, thus they might get over looked and pull off the victory. My prediction on a good day for the Braves is 31-35 in favor of Harvard Westlake. If the Braves do not post a good showing.... well, i don't even want to think of what the out come might be. Good Luck Braves.... you can do it, just play your game. Oh yeah Covina and OC in the finals and i hope Covina sticks it to them.

I will be drafting a letter to Mr. Staunton this week. It may not help, because he probably doesn’t care one way or the other, simply because it doesn’t affect him.

I will be copying some of these posts also, so he can see that maybe CIF needs to “Step Up and take some accountability for their stupid decisions.

I run a distribution branch of the one largest retailer in America. The logistically information and technology today is just amazing! Maybe CIF should consider hiring an outside source to fix their mess!

Some of the big companies out there like Wal-Mart, Target, Coke, Pepsi, Costco, and Frito Lay deal with all the logistically problems every day. Just think if the trucking industry could lend a helping hand.

Good Luck this week!

There are some kids that could start on a few teams, but the way some staff's work(favoritism)would probably not start.

About the recruiting thing...I can't fathom any kind of logic that puts any team that recruits in with ANY state funded schools. But we have to take on what is put in front of us and do the best we can.

If any team knocks Oaks Christian off their high horse you will see me on the evening news...probably being arrested while running and screaming naked in the streets. I may not break any ordinances..but arrested just for the sight alone....

The way the division it set up is a little bizzare. I really don't understand why teams like Morro Bay, St. Joseph, Templeton are condsidered part of Southern Calif. This is a new one for me. I think that that this Division (NW) alone compared to the other divisions in the area is truely screwed up. The Los Padres League should not be considered part of Southern California. Thus my understanding is CIF-Southern Section. Santa Barbra should be the cut off for Southern Cal. Dam those schools are past Santa Barbra. It is unfair for a group of football players to have to travel that far to play a game. That alone is a added pressure. What they had no room up North for these guys??? Now the players have to miss a whole day of school to ride a bus for 4 to 5 hours. I wish all those schools traveling that far all the luck. I know that the SD and BP will put on a good show. SD I hope that Jon Joe is back and Nico can pound the ball on Morro Bay. Good luck and have fun. I really feel bad that yall have to drive so far. Should we win there is a possibilty that the Colts will have to play at St Joseph. We will be in the same boat next week, but no one will have to miss school.

Prep League Fan said:

I coach in the prep league so it is correct. I have seen it done in water polo with my school last season and their was a chance at a three way tie for the third playoff spot in football last year so preperations were being made for that eventuality. The "game" would have been started at 9:00 AM with enough time to submit our representatives. You are right that it would be asking a lot of the kids to do that but I think everybody would rather have it decided on the field. Of course if it is a two way tie head to head is used and if it is a three way tie for the three spots a coin flip would be used.

jenny craig said:

prep league fan, I find it interesting that the teams in your league would play a quarter. I have never in my 15 years in the valley as a coach, heard of that. First, each league must turn in their 1st,2nd, 3rd place teams by Saturday at noon. That is a fact! Second, to ask kids to come back after a brutal Friday night game and play two quarters on Saturday morning? I don't think you are correct in how the prep league solves their ties. Where a coin flip is silly it is the only way unless CIF relaxes when the teams must be announced.

Thank You 74 Colt said:

Dear 74 Colt

We plan on a Motor Home or Chartering a bus if we can get enough interested parents.

I wish to congratulate the Colts for an outstanding season or should I say two years in the making.

We over here at SD respect what you guys have been able to accomplish, regardless of the criticize you face regarding your schedule. That’s an issue that could be debated until the next election! Who really cares, if you're in the playoffs, something had to go right!

We’ll for us maybe if we can get a win on Friday, then the SGV can see Oaks Christian at San Dimas High the following week. I can’t see CIF making us travel for a second straight week if we win. It will be a great experience for our young group and a way to end the season.

No disrespect to our kids here, but sometimes you just have to admit when another team is just better. I hear Morro Bay is very big upfront, but can be beat with speed. We’ll give it a go on Friday!

If you guys get to Oaks, then I’ll be there hoping someone can knock them off! Nobody can convince me they don’t recruit or the large pocketbook at Oaks doesn’t help that private school. Just think if Covina or SD could recruit and have the Barbone Brothers, Jon Joe combined with MCD and some of your great athletes. Then, it might be equal!

Anyway, what if’s are just that, so good luck along the way!

Prep League Fan said:

Their has been a lot of griping regarding how CIF chooses playoff teams and leagues. It is important to remeber that CIF does not actually do this. The schools align themselves in leagues and choose the method for determining playoff participation. It does not have to come down to a coin flip. There are several leagues that actually play it off on the field if their is a tie and one or more teams would be left out of the playoffs. For example, if the prep league had a situation similar to the Miramonte league, Los Altos and Diamond Ranch would have played a quarter on Saturday morning and the loser would have played Bonita for a quarter to determine the two playoff representitives. Regardless of their preleague schedule all the teams "earned it" the same amount during league and I wish more leagues would use a method like this.

CIF does control how the leagues are grouped in the post season. I think a combination of the Valle Vista, Rio Hondo, Montview, and Mission Valley leagues would be very comepetitive year after year and allow for some great local rivalries to develop. Right now these leagues are mixed in with small privtae school leages that are often far away. Hopefully the coaches and AD's could push this alignment during the next cycle.

What's the answer? Looks like you people already have it figured out. You do whatever needs to be done. It's a nightmare for a bunch of teams and I myself am lost at the reasoning ( or lack of ) that CIF put into these matchups. If and when Covina has to make a visionquest as far as you guys do I will rent a minivan and pack as many people into it as possible. If other do the same and split costs it works out pretty cheaply. Have done that in the past. You have my word that I have asked the powers above to grant you a pleasant and joyous trip..BOTH ways!

Again, seeing the sacrifices and dedication that you put in for your kids is something that helps renew my faith in mankind after reading a lot of the outright spew and negativity that I see posted around here. Too bad they don't hand out trophies for parents too because I definitely think you peole deserve one.

Jenny Craig said:

CIF is a freeking joke. Is this the way they truely realigned the divisions? San Dimas 400 miles away. Did they not take into consideration the cost of transportation to these games. The schools will use the money they made during the season to pay for the trip. This is terrible but what could you expect from CIF. At this point I am ok with San Dimas backing their way into 2nd. The Braves travel to a very beatable Harvard Westlake. Braves pull off the huge upset.

Hey Road Trip,

Glad you got the memo. There is really no end to the hilarity for anyone with a road map and the first round pairings. Obviously the guys who set these games don't buy their own gas.

Northern Division sends San Luis Obisbo 100 miles down to play Dos Pueblos ) which is isn't all that bad of a way to spend a Friday afternoon if you have a seat on the right side of the bus) and St. Bonnie up 160 miles to play Paso Robles. Hey, maybe this could give them something to do on the ride. You know, school bus A leaves San Louie at 1PM heading South on 101 traveling 55 mph, well, until they slow to a crawl through Santa Barbara anyhow, and bus B departs Ventura at noon on the same highway going North. You know, where do they meet?

Atascadero's reward for winning PAC-7 is a 380 mile round trip to Saugus, wheee! Hope they let the boys out for a soda and walk around at the James Dean crash site in Cholame.

Mid Valley, (should have called it the Various Valleys), sends Workman to Santa Barbara to play Bishop Diego.

The grand prize winner seems to be the North East Division which is sending little Saddleback Valley Christian from San Juan Capistrano up to play Mammoth Lakes 350 miles away. The only thing I can figure is that CIF wants SCV to see why it put them in the San Joaquin League.

What is your recommendations on how to deal with the NW region travel problems? Everyone knows the kids, parents and coaches will overcome, but it simply makes no sense.

Can't they do better?

To Don and all the other San Dimas Fans and parents. Seeing the itinerary that you have drawn up and laid out for your trip up north is truly amazing. My hat's off to all of you for the time, effort, and dedication that you are showing for your kids. I know your kids must be just as proud of you as you are of them!

Hello yall,
Covina did its job and has to work even harder now. Lets take this one game at a time. We can not afford to look past any team. Game 1 is Friday and we must show up for that one first. It's all good to think that we will make it to the end. I hope that we do!!! But lets not jump the gun and put us in the championship and we haven't played one game yet. I know that the Colts will be fired up and ready to play on Friday. I know that they will get the job done. I am very proud of my Colts. They have played some really good football. This is a good team and I know that the other teams are looking past us. We will rise up and strike down all who stand in our way. We will show all the haters and doubters what we can do. To all the Colts Football players and Coaching staff, Good Luck and keep up the good work. The road will be tougher but the reward at the end will be great. Go Colts!!

TO MY BOYS, I AM VERY PROUD OF BOTH OF YOU! YOU ARE PART OF A GREAT TEAM AND FOOTBALL PROGRAM. KEEP WORKING HARD!

SaintB,

I AM A FAN OF ALL FOOTBALL!

High School ball anyhow; I do, however have great disdain and enmity, (not sure what those meant, but I googled dislike and that's what I got), for any governing body who happily sends busloads of teenagers on 400+ mile long roadtrips to play first round playoff games.

I have children/friends/children of friends who coach at/attend(ed)/play(ed) for San Dimas, Damien, Charter Oak, La Habra, Bonita, South Hills, Northview, Covina, Santa Fe, St. Paul, Bosco Tech, Amat, La Serna, Claremont, St. John Bosco, Cantwell, Loyola, and Lutheran HS of La Verne. I've attended games at and rooted for all those schools over the years.

At the La Habra/So Hills game this year, I spent a half on each side; same thing at the Smudge Pot, Bonita/CO, and the La Serna/Santa Fe games.

To Jim Stanton:

What kind of logistical steroids are you and CIF on?

Having Los Padres and Valley Vista teams traveling 4/5 hours to play a Friday Night game. Tri-Valley is no better having to drive to Covina.

This is truly the worst joke of the year! I thought the BCS had problems, you guys are complete f----- MORONS.

Hey fellow Covina fans...don't let the negative posts get to you so much. By all means respond to them and show your school pride but don't let them get under your skin! I've been dealing with it here for the last couple of weeks and there are a few out there that live to bash Covina. Don't worry about it and keep showing your support for our Colts! Just be prepared for them to come here and spew more garbage when their teams are sitting at home after week one and they have lots of time on their hands.

If any of the kids from the team come here, or any parents of those kids, I just want to say that I can not put into words how proud I am to be a Covina Colts fan. You guys have done a fantastic job the last few years and you should be proud! Players and parents alike. I know I speak for a lot of fans that don't make it to this board in saying we are all proud of each and every one of you and THANK-YOU for the job you are doing!

Wishing you good luck and continued success in the weeks ahead and NO MATTER WHAT you have already done your school and your community proud.

Why is their alot of people that don't want covina to be a success ?why does everone want them to get blown away in the playoffs?these guys on this colt team have been putting up these kind of numbers for four years now ,when they were freshman the games were over at halftime in the 40's and 50's to 0, JV it was the same thing , and now that they ars seniors it's still the same ,they are a very special group of kids with alot of talent that only comes around once and a while so lets get behind them and wish them a great post season ,and wish them a 4-0 record in the playoffs ,you never know they just might supprise the world with four great victories ,the last one being aginst O.C.but first we need to take one game at a time, never look past your first game,GO COLTS ...GOOD LUCK!!!

Covina got a great draw, or at least the best draw one can get that ends with Oaks Christian stomping all over you.

I don't know enough of the teams to make predictions on all, but I do see Covina making a run since they avoid Harvard-Westlake, who I think should have got the three seed.

Covina vs. Oaks in the finals. And remember this phrase Colt fans. "We're just happy to be here."

Braden said:

for the final my predication OC 56-12. Covina can't hang with clausen and tyler

I'm hoping the colts can make believers out of some of the doubters out there ,this is no cupcake division (northwest),the road will be rough, and the trips long, no doubt, but in the end I hope the colts will have some of your respect for their accomplishments. all we would like is some goodluck comments instead of all the negative bashing....thank you ,the boys are only human and it feels better to have the community behind them instead of spitting in their faces.
