POSTGAME: Talk your smack or cry me a river ...

| | Comments (343) |

Northwest Division
Oak Park 17, Covina 14, 2 OT (burn the tapes of this game)
Southwest Division
El Dorado 14, Los Altos 7 (Sounds like a good effort)

Five thoughts about Covina vs. Oak Park:

1. Covina lost the game when it didn't go up 14-0 despite numerous opportunities. The rest is conversation.

2. Oak Park is the least impressive finals team I've ever seen.

3. Oak Park had one thing in mind - allow no big plays. It worked.

4. There were 10 plays that, if Covina makes any one of them, they win the game. They made none.

5. That was one of the worst HS football stadiums I've ever been in. No visitor stands?

WE WILL SAY IT AGAIN IN PLAIN ENGLISH...JAMAL JAMES IS ONE OF THE BEST IN TRACK IN THE STATE. IS MJ...NO!!! HE IS BEING RECRUITED BY A PAC 10 SCHOOL...OPEN YOUR BITTER LITTLE EYES AND GET A DOSE OF THE TRUTH. YOU ARE SO JEALOUS BECAUSE COVINA GETS THE RECOGNITION YOU CRAVE SO BADLY FOR YOUR TEAM. GET OVER IT!!!!

your fired said:

your obviously a covina fan HE COULD...and hey covina people since your season is OVER you guys can all come out tonight and talk about how u coulda shoulda woulda beat charter oak...i mean thats how you people live...its a dream world where you guys blow out ganesha and get so much confidence that you think your the best in the valley...michael johnson over jamal james every snap...every day of the week

He could said:

The Washington Huskies are pretty biased don't you think?

your fired said:

i asked for a biased fans take...not some guy whos on this kids balls

He could said:

From scout.com.. I believe you are the idiot.

"Jamal James is a 5-foot-9, 175-pound cornerback/receiver prospect from Covina, Calif., and word around the Washington internet community Tuesday afternoon was that James had verbally committed to the Huskies. James is close, but needs to make at least one trip up north to confirm things."

HE COULD: your an idiot

He could said:

He could definitely match up with him. He definitely has the speed and can hop and is a DI recruit. It would be a nice matchup for sure.

is there any neutral parties out there that think jamal james could stop michael johnson??? doubt it

dumbest, Johnson, fattest, varsity, sophomore, guaranteeing

THE COACH said:

Your Fired,

honestly (your fired) you must be the dumest person on this dont try to talk smack unless you know what your talking about. micheal jhonson is good but shows what you know. if anybody that would cover him it would be Jamal James #4 hes only the fatest guy in the Valley. been on varcity since is sophmore year on varcity track since is freshman year and went to cif every year so i think that #4 might be able to do something. just a lil bit not too much huh? well since i proved you right again lets see what you have to say next. ohh yea covina doesnt play them no more i dont really know why but im still gauranteeing that covina would beat them this year and i never said Mcdonough was the only person on the team. dont forget about #4 ha ha

McD Fan said:

You're fired-

If anyone saw the Damien vs. Charter Oak game no one...and I mean NO ONE would think Charter Oak would be in "ANY" Championship Game. That's not a cheap shot that's being honest! They looked terrible on both sides of the ball. Although CO fought like hell they were over matched and would still, on the eve of their Championship game and 9 game run, still get a beat down. As far a Covina, you're right one player doesn't win a game. And I do think that Covina has the coach to stop MJ but the real battle would be to see AJ Pasalo and McD give a LB clinic! That would be something.

A switch at QB proves the "leadership" value of a QB as being "Job #1". Look at UCLA vs. USC. UCLA doesn't win with Olson at QB that day! QBs make all the difference in the world. Teams just follow different QBs differently. Look at the Dallas Cowboys with Romo instead of Bledsoe.

I think that's McD's value. That's Mendrun's value. They "lead" teams to victory. And apparently that's your new QB's (Allen) value. But comparing Allen to McD is premature. Best of luck against Eldorado. I'll be there cheering CO on! Talk about a coaching job by Farrar..would have been fun to see Gano vs. Farrar but hey that's life in the big city!

your fired said:

THE COACH how could u say covina is flat out better than charter oak??? last time I looked 1 guy doesnt win a game...co is way bigger and deeper top to bottom...do u have anyone on that roster that could cover michael johnson?? los altos south hills trabuco and d ranch didnt so why would you...ask your coach why he doesnt play co anymore...big #'s aginst weak teams thats all covina is...

THE COACH said:

McD Fan

thank you for knowing whats really going on with Mcdonough. (NOPE) makes some good points but you know exactly what to say and its all true. i think the kid from Charter oak is good but he isnt no Mcdonough. i wouldnt even compare him close to him. if covina and chater oak played this season, covina would dominate with mike playing both sides of the ball it doesnt matter who covina played if they were good or not. covina is flat out better than charter oak so (nope) mcdonough will get POY and your Charter oak QB will just get 1st team all CIF maybe so will see what happens i will be attending the game friday night at citrus so i'll see how good this team really is.

McD fan said:

I have this nagging question that still hasn't been brought up regarding McD.

Why would Aram, who has NO agenda, reward McD with the POY Award as a junior and then McD doubles and triples those MVP stats of his "junior" year and Aram again calls McD possibly the best MLB in the SGV if it were NOT true?

No other QB in the Valley plays both sides of the ball. No other athlete except "Foss" has the "double sided" impact on both sides of the ball at a high level as they do. No one.Yet people still hammer McD? What gives?

Poll the MVP candidates and have them justify McD performances on film, on paper or in person and it's hard not to give it up to McD for his sheer will to win and mental toughness.

Is Boise State/Damien's Ian Johnson any less an athlete because USC or Notre Dame or UCLA did not recruit him? Is he any less worthy of his "stats" and fame because of the division he plays in? Talent is talent and heart is heart but every so often talent and heart come together and a special player is born.

Is McD capable of starting on any SGV team at QB? I wouldn't put it past him. Could any SGV QB play MLB like McD? I doubt it.. Even Vince Ferragamo and the fans at last year's semi final game recognized this warrior in pads. Maybe OC saw something "WE" won't/can't/haven't accepted.

mcd is very talented how could u say otherwise...but i cant say he would start anywhere in the valley at qb...i feel this way mostly because he did all his damage aginst poor teams hes very unproven...and its not about pickin the best players...its about pickin the right ones...co's SOPHMORE qb is undefeated and hes actually played some competition 9-0 and by the way if you havent seen a game lately he doesnt just throw hail marys to johnson

Nope said:

"Coach",

Based on Aram's criteria for P.O.Y. Your boy McD doesn't really hold up....let's review:

Aram's post:

For those of you arguing about who it should go to, you should know a few things:

1. I put the most weight on performance in the playoffs.
*McD had three interceptions...the colts were HELD to only 14 points in a double OT game, despite his HALL OF FAME PERFORMANCE against (in Arams words)"the worst finals team EVER!" Apparently, it's tough to run when the wind is blowing!

2. I poll the other guys who have covered games for us and whose opinions I trust.
*Good luck with that...

3. All-league voting is NEVER considered. *Obviously we know this, so his MVP in the Valle Vista League should not be considered.

4. Coach's opinion or nomination is NEVER considered.
*We know this too!

5. It's an impossible award to decide BEFORE the playoffs are COMPLETELY over.
*MVP should go to a kid from C.O.

THE COACH said:

NOPE.....

this is for you. Mcdonough starts at QB anywhere in the Valley im not saying the other QB's arent good im just saying there not as good as him. Aaram made some good points but NOPE, he is the best and he will peobaly Be player of the year again back to back. i do agree with the fullback though because is sophmore year on varsity he played running back and started at Dline and did a very good job too.

Nope said:

Aram,

I'm being real honest here - the reason those other teams aren't CIF Champions (with the exception of CO..since they are still alive) is because they don't have the talent to surround the QB...Look at the kids that jack up McD's numbers for the last two years....James, Sutton, Clark, Combest...none of those other teams have that. The kid is versatile and athletic..I give him that. Bottom line...McD would NOT be the starting QB at those other schools. He needs a supporting cast and the right system to be AS successful as he was at Covina....Linebacker?? Are you kidding me??

Aram said:

I'm being real honest here - some of the teams you mentioned would be CIF champs with McDonough at QB. Don't fool yourself. Also, I think he might be the best middle linebacker in the area.

Nope said:

"The Coach",

FALSE! He doesn't start at Los Altos, Damien, Charter Oak, or Bonita.....McD would be a full back on most successful teams in the Valley.

Charter Oaks Mom,

That was "nuts" ! 74-Colt is one of the classiest guys on the blog and has been for the whole season. He did not deserve your blog statement at ALL!

Did you even read his post? Or did you read "super awesome's" put down of Covina's great season?

Charter Oak may be in the Championship Game and we "all" are happy for the SGV teams that make a name for themselves but the YEAR LONG COVINA BASHING IS JUST RIDICULOUS !!!

I see nothing wrong with 74's position. People talk out of the wrong side of their body when it comes to Covina. Most never saw them play. I did. They were united, solid at the skill positions, had great pursuit angles and intensity on defense and were VERY WELL COACHED!!!

I think Damien would have had a tougher time with Covina than they had with Charter Oak over the past two years. I saw your team get man handled, beat up, and out coached by Morrison and Co. And that last point's saying something!

When Damien beat up on Charter Oak last year everyone said you were young. A year later and the whopping was worse! More physical! Damien destroyed Charter Oak! MJ was on the sidelines "quitting" on the training table. And your "twin Towers" were crying from the beating Damien's D line was giving them.

At the time I said Damien made Charter Oak look like a very good JV team, nothing more. Maybe your players decided to finally listen to Farrar or maybe Carreon wasn't the "guy" to lead your team or maybe you guys play in a little boys league (as other might say)but "I" give credit where credit is due!

All Championship "runs" deserve to be respected. "ALL" playoff teams regardless of division deserve to be RESPECTED. That's why there are soooooooo many divisions because just like boxing , NOT EVERYONE IS GOING TO FIGHT IN THE HEAVYWEIGHT DIVISION!!

Soap box lecture over....pizza blast still on?

It is hard for me to put into words how hard the lose of Covina's game on Friday hit the players, the Coaches, the parents and the fans. I am a huge fan of Covina Colts and I am very close to all the boys on the team. They should be proud and hold their heads high. My son is a lineman and he works incrediable hard and takes it very serious and personal. I really feel like they all deserved better. They are the better team. Luck was not on their side. Our fans were all there and cheering for our boys. I am definitely disappointed that we will not have one more game to attend and see our young men play one more time. For a lot of them it is their last high school game. But I am definitely not disappointed in our young men. They did play a class act game. And being upset after such a roller coaster of a game just shows the passion for the sport. I love all our Colt players and am very Proud of all of them. The upcoming players have large cleets to fill. I just hope they can. C-Town Mom

To 74 cold alum: your first paragraph is very nice and accurate. The chargers did have a great game last night and they got the job done. They deserve respect for that. The rest of your statement sounds like a very childish rant of someone who lost. But then, your team did lose. I had great respect for your team and all they accomplished and had great sympathy for the boys until I read your entry this morning. What a shame that you have to taint your team by being so ugly. I haven't noticed and don't believe that the covina bashing that has occurred on this blog has been by CO. As a matter of fact CO is pretty quiet on this blog...........we love and support our boys and we go out and cheer when they play. We don't need to bash others to feel good about ourselves. I ask you to take a moment and think about what you're teaching your boys when you speak as you did. Is that truly the role model you want to be.

CO - GREAT GAME You guys were awesome! Can't wait to see next week's thriller. CO you know.

There should be no reason why your side of the field should not be packed with supporters from the rest of our schools when you play for the championship. You got it done and now we should get it done in supporting you.

And moving on..to "super awesome"....tell ya what slick..why not go over to Covina and see if you can borrow a uniform for a few. Then line up against McD and show us how YOU can stop him. I'm sure he'd love to hear from you face to face and put on a personal clinic as he's running over your ass. Please? Come on..you can probably get the Trib to come out and photograph it all. It could be your moment to shine...has to be more rewarding than crawling out of some hole to come here and post another of your idiotic Covina bashing threads with yet another log on name. You could probably sell tickets and donate the money to Charity...or at least what would be left over after you paid your dentist....

Confidence VS Arrogance, many times missunderstood there is a world of difference between the two, the word Confidence says Ive done all I can to prepare therefore im ready, Arrogance says because of who I am im ready dispite who my competition is.

Friday El Dorado kids didnt beat Los Al kids The Eldo coaches beat the Los Al coaches, plain and simple.

All coaches in league agree most explosive players on Los Al #1 and #84, but these two kids not utilized at all poor # 1 not even retuning punts great idea put two slower kids back to return punts how enginous.

The whole D6 knows how to stop Los Al, blitz the Q/B hard with 6'5' D/E/s, so why not roll the kid out, is there a problem with that I dont get any serious reason for that, the kid has an arm get him out of traffic to open area and then he could have thrown or ran.

Defensively was a travisty the secondary is by definition slow, cant allow corners that far off against average recievers, should have been physical with them at line and if they get burned deep so be it Eldo Q/B had no real accuracy or arm speed.

Lastly why # 1 not on "D" ive seen all the playoff games the best player out there or clearly the most explosive was #1 if he were in for a corner my quess is he intercepts one for a touchdown.

Hey good game but the O.C. showed why they are the O.C. bigger kids but mostly coaching was better, that team was screaming beat me but no one answered, and Los Al team seemed to have very little continuity and almost no identity.

The "goliath" reference was spoken of earlier on this thread concerning Oaks Christian and everyone else in the division. Funny but when Notre Dame and UCLA ran off 7 or 8 in a row against USC, I don't remember all the USC fans I see now.

Thanks Aram.

Like always you put the kids first. It took this hard headed ex-coach a while to realize that but you do. Always. Thank you for being a showcase for prep sports...warts and all. Remember sports isn't all glory and accolades sometimes it's painfull and regrettable. You're the man!

As far as the pictures of football players crying ...they stay! I said it at the beginning of the season. There may be NO CRYING IN BASBALL! but football players put alot of physical, emotional and mental output into their sport. Sometimes crying is the last emotion that's left inside you after a game that takes everything out of you...win or lose. I personally LOVE THAT PICTURE..reminds me of Y.A Tittle on his knees blood running from his bald head...a beaten warrior, but a warrior none the less!

To those that say they're tasteless or unsportanlike I respectfully disagree. That shows me the heart of a Champion. Someone who gives everything on the field and has nothing left. Besides no one complained when Aram had McD's picture from last year's Championship game on a week's thread.

I wish all my players played with that kind of passion.....wait they did! Great pictures and even greater story of the senior who's crying knowing the season is over and a knee injury in a passing league game limited his senior season playing time. I "feel" his pain in that wonderful picture and his emotional display should haunt EVERY player who has seasons/games yet to play. When it's over it's over forever. Hell there were tears all the way to Arizona (props to 74-Colt) and in the stands (props to BIG DADDY).

Absolute great seasons. And to all the season long Covina haters...in ten minutes no one will remember your silly poking comments but 20 years from now people will still remember this glorious 2 year run and the Legend of Mc Donough will never be forgotten!

I know I was choked up last night...but coaches cry at home when we lose and on the field when we win. Watery eyes don't count.

Bloggers Pizza Blast is ON!!!! and going to be awesome. See you there!!! EVERYONE"S INVITED!!!

Damien Dad,

I like that "a conjured up recruiting tool for rich parents to showcase their kids." That about sums it up.

To BIG DADDY, 74-Colt,and many ,many many, other Covina fans,

I had the pleasure to see Mike McD play and was surprised to see Ralph Diaz was also playing for Covina. Over the past few months bloggers have slammed the Colts without mercy. Every time the Covina fans just said they were fans of their team and fans of ALL SGV teams and took the high road.

I went out to see Covina last night and they were Champions! They played with Championship heart, desire, team work and class. Oak Park vs. Covina was the Championship Game and both teams played like it was. The game came down to DOUBLE OVER TIME! My heart goes out to ALL the Covina fans, coaches and players, and especially that bright comet that blew across the SGV sky and blazed memories of a lifetime...Michael Mc Donough. Back to Back San Gabriel Valley Most Valuable Player !

Oaks Christian is a cancer on the High School football landscape. A conjured up "recruiting tool" for rich parents to showcase their kids. They are a DIV I school and the recent NON -REALIGNMENT favors ONLY them, disgusting! I wonder were Clay Matthews and Wendell Tyler learned the football toughness that made them great players. Certainly NOT in this kind of "BIO-DOME Football petrie dish" called Oaks Christian. There is nothing "christian" about stacking the deck. I'll be pulling for Oak Park, the real Champion of this division.

First off I am not a colt fan..just an sgv football fan, this is for all parents...If what you want in a football coach is: intregrity, class, accountability, role model and the willingness to help teach your child to deal with adversity? If that is what you want as i want for my children, then Covina Coach Darryl Thomas is the perfect fit(not to say that there are not other gracious coaches in the area that fit this discription, cause there are. All I am doing is pointing out what i saw last night and have seen from Coach Thomas for many years and think he should be recoginized for it)....What I saw last night in Oak Park was a total class act right after a heartbreaking loss.

I was talking to parents last night in the stands and asking them about Coach Thomas and his staff. And all I kept hearing was good positive things about the coaches. But that could also be cause they were in the semis.

Even reading the paper this morning and reading the comments by Mike McD (back-2-back poy?) were made with such class and poise(this from a kid who just last in double over time). That is a testament to the program.

Lastly good luck CO...would love to have made it to the game tonight..but it is off to the UCLA-SC game

Greetings!

I am Mike the Clone and you are Not!

Let me tell those kids from Covina something...You kids keep your heads up because you have nothing to be ashamed of. You guys lost in a double O.T. That say's so much about the battle you guys have in your hearts and the fire that you carried onto that field last night.

DO NOT HANG YOUR HEADS! You guys are warriors.

Overtime losses are brutal to take, hell any loss is hard to take especially when you leave it all out on that field.

Guys learn from this. Some of you will never "pad up" again but the valuable lessons the game of football has taught you will be forever ecthed in your mind and your soul. Carry those lessons with you as you continue your life's journey.

Be proud Covina!!! You guys had a great run!

Out!

Attended Los Altos / El Dorado game last nite. Los Altos had them right where they wanted them in the first half going in tied at 7-7. Actually Los Altos first drive got them down inside the 30 and they came up empty (interception). It seemed like Los Altos was inside the 30 around 5 times in this game and could not come away with points, plus the coach decided to go on 4th down and not at least try to get points with his Kicker....maybe the kicker is not that good.......??....El Dorado did not impress me offensive wise but thet did impress me defensive wise...very quick to the ball, but it looked like they could be passed on...which leads me to the 5'7" QB Castaneda. This kid has a great arm no doubt about it and he is very Accurate BUT!!!! his size hurt him...how many of his passes were knocked down at the line of scrimmage?....this hurt Los Altos Offense big time.....it was very obvious that Los Altos could not get a running game going except for the touchdown run before the half. It also seemed that the team that got tired first was going to give up the go ahead touchdown. Well Los Altos looked tired in the fourth quarter...Poor Nick Longoria he was playing both ways all nite and maybe some others as well...Nick was huge for Los Altos last nite doing what was asked of him on both sides of the ball....but they were out of gas in that fourth quarter and that cost them as well.....this game could have gone either way...Some of the play calling was questionable for LA and they should have had Castaneda roll out more or throw quick slants....anyhow it was a good game and Los Altos parents, fans, Players, and coaches you have allot to be proud of, your team came to play last nite with lots of heart and was predicted to get blown out....you guys were impressive just came up short (no pun intended). Good luck next year....

L.A. sure had them worried. We sat on E.D. side and wow, they had never had a game that close. 7 to 7 end of 3rd qtr. Great job by L.A., I thought they might just win.

Hey SGVTribune,

Thanks for putting the bad juju on Matt Castenada last night with your recent story on his "lack of height" (a la Sports Illustrated cover jinx). El Do knocked down at least three of his passes last night at the line of scrimmage, and he had a generally crappy game (no dis to El Do for their part in that).
Same situation next near, write about El Do's ugly uni's, and maybe you'll put the bad mojo on them.

Thanks to all the Conq players for their effort this year.

Go girl's soccer.........(if I really just said that, somebody shoot me).

Looks like because the Covina offense had been struggling the whole night it was safer to go for the tie then to try and score on the ground and possibly lose. Given the way things were going IMHO it was definitely the right call.

I wouldn't begin to second guess any call by Coach Thomas. He got us this far.

My many thanks to the Colts for their dedication, their heart, and the pleasure of getting to watch these young men every week. Hold your heads high and be proud...just like your community is of you!

Wishing the best tonight for Charter Oak.

And then there was one....

i wasnt at the covina game but i do have a ? about it...im assuming it was 14-7 when they scored..your down 14-13 on the ROAD...u have this super legit athlete at qb...u only need 3 yards...and u choose to kick and go to overtime...i think i might of put the ball in the #7's hands and let him get the 2...but hey thats why im a blogger and not a coach...anyone agree/disagree?

my thoughts said:

LOS altos had there chances and so did el dorado, maybe the cold weather had something to do with it maybe not,los altos qb had trouble throwing the ball all night how many passes were knocked down, the bottom line is los altos got shut down except for one big play and the biggest thing i notice was they ran out of gas in fourth, all they had to do was stop them on all those 3rd down plays and they could'nt, maybe a little more conditioning would of help maybe not.But i well say this that el dorado didnt inpress me that much for a team with all those big dudes they were kind of slow and there was no real stand outs on that team if charter oak can win that could be a great match up because i think there better than la.

Great season Covina, Sounds like an absolute heartbreaker. Mcdonough is a phenomenal player and you guys should keep your heads up, only loss was to Glendora during the season and they are no walk in the park.

Dan said:

Your right Benny tone deaf, El Do had an overthrown pass to a wide open # 15, I was more or less rubbing it in on the posters that don't want to give the sgv southwest teams any respect and didn't think the SGV teams could play with the OC teams, El Do deserved the win with that last time consuming drive that kept Los Altos offense off the field, but Los Altos did have their chances.

bleedsblungold said:

Los Al had its chances but wasnt able to score, the most explosive player on the team the little #1 not even in most of game, too bad Qber rushed hard all night and never able to get set, D secondary horrible not out talented just 12 to 15 yard cushion on slower recievers and against a very shaky Qber what gives here, could have played man or at least 3 to 5 yard cushion and stopped that team for sure.

Not blaming the kids on this one the d secondary was where the game was lost even without #5 in game they stopped thier so called explosive run, problem all night was large cushion on slower recievers, even when this team went deep Qber not able to get ball there.

Offensively threw to #9 way too often good kid but not fastest on field, and #1 no where to be seen on field most of game, last week a 90 yard kick return and a 50 yard reception who did he piss off.

Well great game and I know Los Al feels it let that one slip away, should have been 21-7 but cant put corners 12 yards off when first down marker 8 yards away. And if #1 returns next year try letting him get in the game he was clearly a big part of team success last 4 weeks, oh and I hear he plays corner pretty good. Great effort by a underdog team valley should be proud.

Benny Tone Deaf said:

Dan, LA only had 8 first downs the whole game. Incompletions are part of every game. El Dorado had several bombs that were just missed.

Los Altos rushed for a total of 124 yards and Ira got 75 on one play. Your Defense kept you in the game and did a great job. Don't diss the El Do Defense you got one touchdown on a great run by a very good back but that was it.

The Los Al Players played with heart.

Dan said:

Los Altos vs El Dorado
Good game by both teams, 7 to 7 till mid 4th qtr.
So much for El Dorado being heads & shoulders above the SGV teams, They were good but Los Altos could have won, I can remember 3 missed opportunities, there was an overthrown pass to a wide open Rex Foss, and an underthrown completion to wide open Foss, he had to slow down to catch it, both of these would have been TDs, there was another over thrown ball to a wide open tight end at around the El Dorado 20 yard line that would have beena big play or possibly a TD.

Benny Tone Deaf said:

Los Altos made a game out of it. Ira Thomas had 116 yards (75 yards on one play) He was the only score at the end of the 2nd Quarter.

Good game! The Los Altos D played their hearts out. El Do had the ball the last 7:30 and just kept getting first downs. I hope #5 is okay!
