Say What?==
When we played Verbum Dei back in the late 70's they did the same thing at Jackie Robinson Stadium. We were from Boyle Heights so darkness didn't bother us.lol But when we hit the field to warm up Verbum Dei did something I've NEVER seen done since...They came out in jerseys, beanies and tennis balls! NO HELMETS! NO SHOULDER PADS! NO FOOTBALLS!!! Just full uniforms with matching colored Verbum Dei beanies and those bright neon tennis balls. And they looked HUGE!!! We ALL did "double takes" to see that they were really that huge without pads! They kept tossing those tennis balls up in the air and looking at us like we were "fresh meat" ! Coach Ruedaflores was pissed! He told us that "they" were the ones who were going to get their asses kicked!
They had us 21-0 in the 1stQ and stopped us at the goal line 3 times in the 1st half( fumble, fumble, downs). We tied the game 21-21 with 2 minutes in the game before they intercepted the ball and ran it in in the last minute to win. But we ran and passed on them ALL NIGHT LONG!!! They were in a fight that night!
AP-1983 NFL Defensive Rookie of the YEAR(LB with 11 sacks for the Baltimore Colts that year) Vernon Maxwell was a Soph. DT that year and I had to block him all night. Or at least try! That was a war! He was a man child even then. I've got my money on Verbun Dei!!!
Glad they saved Verbum Dei from closing down. Too much history, too many great players and too many Championships to see it fade away.
Intersting fact: The QB that night Rene Dominguez torched them for 330 yards. And later that year went for 44 points against their CIF Championship team led by USC bound Mo Williams and Marquetti! Final score Salesian 66 Verbum Dei 64! Rene Dominguez was a 6'1" center and our tallest player they were both 6'8" and had two other Div I players on that team. An he went for 44ponts. His son now plays on the Damien Freshmen basketball team.
The Shea Family from Shea home developers built their gym and built Salesian's gym and field as well as being major contributors in honor of their late mother. Props to the Shea Family for helping out!
Don't forget that Coach Gallagher, LaSalle's head coach, is an Amat grad- so it is not just Difiori that has put the Amat stamp on that program.
Don't forget that Coach Gallagher, LaSalle's head coach, is an Amat grad- so it is not just Difiori that has put the Amat stamp on that program.
DiFiori is running that offense. It looked like an Amat game. LaSalle is using all of the old Amat plays and they are working for them. Went to that LaSalle vss. Verb game earlier in the season. I saw first hand how home field advantage worked to LaSalle's advantage. From what I observed LaSalle can't really call that a win. The zebras gave it to them. I think they should watch out for Verb next game. You know what they say about payback?!
Why does Difioris name pop up with La Salle.?...He is not their Head Football Coach over there....assistant coach yes....Give the Head coach his props...Difioris name is linked to Amat, that is the only reason La Salle is even being brought up here...get over it he is gone to spend time with the family....the not going for it on 4th and inches at Cerritos College in the 9-10 loss to Loyola in 2003 is where he will be remembered most.
Luvthisgame,
Yeah, I don't follow La Salle close enough to know just how much of an impact DiFiori has had as an assistant, but he's certainly part of a championship game coaching staff. Looks like his decision to make his coaching hiatus brief has really paid off.
Went to the Duarte/Verb game also and yes, they are that good. I hate to say it, but LA teams do have something that SGV teams don't. I also heard Verb has put up 40 to 50 points through the entire playoffs and not many points have been scored on them in the playoffs.
I believe Verb will play La Salle in the Championship Game. They played each other during the season in a close one(1 point game), according to the fans. Hey Aram, I guess DiFiori is making a statement with his new team. He makes the Championship Game in his first year there.
That was no mistake when you stated Charter Oak has won 10 consecutive games..You just included the WIN the Chargers will have on December 9 when they will be the CIF Champions...GO CHARGERS!!
Anti,
Actually it was you who took things wrong. I was dead serious about the stat boy comment. I needed one. I made an error in my story. It happens.
Stop tripping about journalism degrees. I don't have one, so I don't know what you're talking about. I'm a sports fan who writes. That's all.
AT,
Hahahahaha, that first comment about "stat boy" was so unprofessional, unbelievable, hahahaha. In no way was i attacking your credibility with regard to the mix up on CO's last football title, jus merely pointing it out, but seems u thought i was. remember ohh GIANT one, u are the one with the Journalism degree, not me. Doesnt a beat writer have to carry themselves with some sort of decency, or did they teach u belittlement when called out and down in journalsim 101 as well. OK, AT clones, lets have it, get in ur mans corner and lets hear it.
lastly, to barrow a phrase from you, i also see tons of games all year in multiple divisions, but i guess because i dont own a journalism degree, i must not know, good, bad, or unimpressive?...Ok, u win ;)
Anti,
I needed a stat boy yesterday for my errors. I also wrote that Charter Oak has won 10 consecutive games, but it's actually nine. Here's my excuse - These things happen when you're forced to cover multiple sports for close to 40 schools. You try to write things like you're a team's personal beat writer, but that's really not the case. Oh well, mistakes will happen under those circumstances. Yes, sorry America, I made an excuse for a mistake I made.
About my Covina comments - I stand by what I said about Oak Park. It might make the area look bad if were a Covina coach or player said, but I'm neither. I'm a sports writer. Part of my job is to analyze/give my opinion. That's especially what this blog is made for. And, I am not going to hold anything back when I do have a take. There's no other way to say what I said about Oak Park. They're very unimpressive. That's my opinion. I see a ton of teams all year and in multiple divisions and I'm pretty sure I know good, bad or unimpressive when I see it.
In the end, that's the good thing about this blog. You've got your opinion and I've got mine.
First off, Congrats to CO and their title game birth next week. Talk about a team on a roll. Way to represent the SGV down in deep orange county. Secondly, AT, per your article on saturday morning, just to clear things up, CO did not win a Div.VI title in '01, they won a Div. VII title (beat LA 7-6 at Mt SAC) now some would say, what the difference?, but we all know there is a huge difference in winning division VI and division VII. But i guess we can kind of call you the swami and your gaze into the crystal ball, cuz looks like CO will be hanging a banner in their gym for a southwest (DIV. VI) championship.
Lastly, some of us all ask why is it that orange county, ventura county and even the inland empire dont give the SGV their due respect when it comes to football, we all know we play a good brand of football here, but AT, we all love ya here man, and appreciate the job you do promoting our area, but your comment on the thread below, about Oak Park being the least impressive finals team uve ever seen is just not called for. people from out of the area come and read this blog, and if that "very unimpressive" team beat probably the best, and if not the best, top 3 team in the SGV on a nite when both teams turned over the ball the same amount of times, what does that say about the colts. If the colts win that game by the score of 17-14, do you still make that same comment about them now being the least impressive finals team ever? Hmmmm....probably not, because uve had the chance to see them numerous times over the year and you know that Covina is a damn good football team. You saw Oak Park once and made a season long judgement over the course of one 32 minute long game. I mean even Covina fans gave them their just due in the stands, by the way, i was at the game sitting on the covina side, and you colts fans are very considerate and loyal, and were damn gracious in defeat.
Comments like that one are a main reason that we do not get the respect that we deserve.
let me guess, im alone on this one huh?
Good job Charter Oak,
your the last sgv team standing, way to peak at the right time, bring home a title boys.
Betty B, C.Oak Bro, & all the other charger fans
good for all of you & I'll be there in support of the Chargers as this years sgv representative team, good luck vs El Dorado, it will be a tough game.
As a Senior mom . . . I would just like to Thank You ALL for giving "THIS MOM" ANOTHER Fri. night UNDER THE LIGHTS !! L-O-V-E We love Our Varsity!!! GO CHARGERS ..........
I attended this game as a fan of h.s. football. Not a fan of Duarte. First I think that before the game Duarte came in intimidated. I don't know if this was on purpose but there was some pre-game gamesmanship by Verb. If the game was supposed to be at 7, I arrived at Centennial at approximately 6:30 for a 7 o'clock game and the stadium was completely dark, the parking lot was dark. I thought the game had been moved. But then in the faint darkness I saw the Verbum Dei bus. From what I've learned that if it was a 7 p.m. game most teams come out about an hour prior to kickoff for warm-up. First psyche! Then if the kickoff was changed to 7:30 when was this done, who was informed because I've looked on the CIF website and in the media. There were differing times posted everywhere. But even at that the lights should have been on at 6:30 for warm-ups and other pre-game prepartation for a 7:30 game.
It appeared that Duarte was intimidated at the start of the game. Moving very lethargically and wuz up with that Marx Bros. kick-off strategy. Upon kickoff, the Falcon player fielded the ball then the about 4 other players converge in a huddle, then they break out and I guess Verb was supposed to be confused. It didn't work and Duarte tried it twice. My question did other teams that Duarte played fall for that play?
...and going for it on 4th and 1 in the 1st quarter in your own territory?
...and finally it appeared at the beginning of the game that Duarte was afraid to tackle. They looked flat or was it that Verb was that good.
WTG BOYS!!!!
What a great win for you. Good luck next week. Keep playing like you are now and it's all yours.
Congratulations! The only valley team to play for a CIF title. See you there at Mt. SAC Friday night.
