« Way too early area Top 10 for the 2007 football season ... | Main | I'm happy it rained on the CIF championship bowl games ... »

UPDATE: Tribune Player of the Year (football) ...

I've received many inquiries as to who it might be, and from what I understand, there are a lot of people thinking that because they haven't heard anything yet, it means their kid/player didn't get it. I can tell you all right now that I simply haven't decided yet. The All-Area team is selected already. Player of the Year is not. This is a very difficult decision to make and I like to put a lot of time and thought into it as well as get the opinions of others. I will have a decision soon.

Comments

I could agree to that MATMTWYBAG, except I think both games would be close, anyway's I'll let it go
since this team never came to be after the 1st week was over. By the way I think Amat will be stacked like they were in 05 next year.

Does Amat HAVE to monopolize every football topic?

Better yet Amat schedule Norco, Canyon Country, Mission Viejo instead of Charter Oak, Los Altos,Ranco Cucamonga and South Hills. What does that prove?

Give it a rest with "We're the Best in the Valley" nonsense. This Valley only has one "dominant" team...and you're on a 3 year slide. Dominant teams don't limit themselves to beating Div 6,7 or 8 teams. I can tolerate the bragging but to put every area team and coach down in the Valley? ....to do so is classless.

Give props to Bogan, Farrar and Gano at least they produce good "teams", win Championships, produce Div I college players and are LOYAL to their schools even when they have had chances to go elsewhere.(Amat's list of former coaches that "left" for greener pastures or $$$$ is too long to list) When was the last Amat coach that stayed longer that one contract? Must have been the obnoxious parents and out of control Alumni that made them want to stay. What ever happened to DiFiori?

Get a grip Amat. When you bounce back and I hope you do...come back as a gracious King rather than a childish...King of the Hill moron.

I agree Dan WC had all the tools this year and the reason I did not mention them is because it was not a true team from beginning to end...Too much drama went on there with suspensions to players lost etc. If the coaches would have went to that Wing T earlier and not even started with that Spread Offense WC sits better in the playoff brackets and most likely gets to the dance....There is alot of "ifs" here tho...What a shame to waste such a talented team..Could they have measured up to Amat..yes and no.......yes given that Amat was in a transition year and you guys could have kept it close but not won (this would be early in the season)Later in the season NO Amat beats you soundly.....remember you did keep it close with Mater Dei but we also beat Mater Dei the year before....we also beat Rancho and you guys got worked by them.....full strength early Good Matchup......Full strength late mid season not a contest Amat big........

Dan I agree with you 100%. cant wait for next year we have alot of returning players.

I can't beleive someone is talking about the San Gabriel Matadors in the 70's, actually talked to Pruitt a couple of weeks ago, looks and acts the same, saw Skip Harrington and John Loyd earlier in the year at Doc Kerrs golf tourney. The mid 70's was dominated by the Matadors. Names like Clay Brown (BYU Holiday bowl catch from Jim MCMahon), Mark and John Betance (Damiens punters dad) Bob Rowe, Kerr,Escarcega,Meza,Crook,Chakerian,Blaney, some of those names should sound familiar if your a Glendora Fan. We had a section at Citrus where you had to show a San Gabriel ID to sit in there are so many transplants. Kinda went downhill in 79, a lot of problems but always loved Skip, he's a good man. I grew up with Kieth Jones, don't remember his football skills to much but I never saw him without a basketball in his hand, that boy could shoot.

MATMTWTBAG,
A full healthy West Co squad would have impressed
you too if you would have had a chance to see them, they would have had the best shot against Amat this year, & I really think they would have come out ahead in that game, its my opinion & we all have one but thats the great thing about this
board. As for West Co size didn't matter cause the lines were good enough when they had all their skill players, they hung with Matter Dei's line because of the many top notch skill players
on the team,Imagine Will Wallace, Demond Wallace,
Tyler Hockenhull,Shaun Rosenthal, Nick Field, Isaac Tucker, & Josh Thomas, Thats way to many weapons & speed for any SGV team to contain.

sangra, the qb's name was mark betance not maunuel bettancourt. the wide reciever's name was alfred varela not Barela. he has a brother michael as well that played for san gabriel high this year. there is also a betance that punts for damien maybe there related? other than that you got everything right. who was your dad and uncle who played soccer? those soccer teams won c.i.f. and were always in the playoffs. this year we went 3-7 but at least beat mark keppel!only 25 players on varsity but coach jones has the team ready to play hard. san gabriel matadores!

All the comparisons to Amat. Aram has a good point in that Amat would have taken and beaten all the other SGV teams. One team that I think would have given Amat a great game would have been Damien. Other then that I visited games at CO and Los Altos and Rowland and Covina. The team that impressed me the most was Damien. All the rest seemed too small for Amat. Los Altos thinks they have a arguement but your two biggest guys Longoria and Foss are very impressive but after that it looked like a JV team out there. Covina was McD but not much more. Rowland just too Small and not much Talent. CO seemed to fold when playing a true legit talented team....Talent believe it or not still shows up at AMAT, and we do have a young coach and we did not make the playoffs but you give our schedule to any of these SGV teams and they maybe, MAYBE win two games. Amat went 5-5 overall in a transition year and without their starting RB (Gaise) but they did not drop off that much with Mcbride. I am hoping all this talk of how your school can measure up to AMAT is all that, just talk because be careful what you ask for. If one of the above mentioned schools draws AMAT in their schedule next year be prepared to take the beating your going to get because players and coaches read this blog and next year is not the year you want to play Amat. This senior class is coming out with something to prove next year....out of all the above mentioned schools that I hope we play, I am hoping it is Los Altos.

"I don't think any SGV team would've beaten Amat this year. Not that it matters ..."

Gotta disagree here... I'd say if Amat played Damien, Charter Oak, Los Altos, South Hills, Covina, West Covina, and Rowland, they'd probably go 6-1, maybe 5-2. They'd almost certainly be the favorite in every game, but they aren't clearly so much better than the other local teams that they'd win on a night they brought their "B" game while their opponents brought their "A" game.

someone on WEST COVINA won MVP for san antonio leage this year and im hoping he will win SGV mvp.

que rifa san gabriel matadores!

matadores was kicking ass in those days in every sport. my uncle played soccer there as did my dad. the team was a powerhouse in those days.the football team had a the qb was a manuel bentancourt, i think, he played for san diego state or somehwere like that like in 1976. they had a reciever named Barela last year. where did he do play? he was short but fast and catched alot of passes.

Gotta disagree with you Aram, Amat was beatable
this year, next year, probably not but this year they were.

Conq. Alum, what you said was sometimes true, but most of the time the penalties that were drawn were countless backfield motion & false start penalties, it was frustrating to see Wallace put so much effort only to have it nullified so many times during a game & season.
When ever he broke a big run we would hold our breath & wait to see if a flag was going to be thrown.

I don't think any SGV team would've beaten Amat this year. Not that it matters ...

ok you and cal preps win...

A mature Los Altos team led by a great veteran coach in Gano barely squeeks by a very young Amat team (including 9 Junior starters on defense) and a rookie head coach (Youngest coach in the SGV and the Pac-5?), not to mention missing their veteran starting RB/DB in Gaisie all season...hahaha! CONGRATS on your virtual victory againts this subpar Amat team! All of these virtual comparisons are all very close games. With the "disaster" that was Amat this year, Cal Preps STILL thinks that these would be close games. The more people that post virtual scores, the better it makes Bishop Amat look because this was indeed a "rebuilding" year for Amat. According to Cal Prep's, this "rebuilding" Amat team could hang with the best the SGV had to offer this year...

What does this tell you about our Lancers?

Cal Preps is a joke...I would revisit how many total yards a fully healthy Los Altos team had againts a fully healthy St. Francis team. Just like Damien fans disregarded their loss to Los Altos, I see Los Altos fans disregard their loss to St. Francis.

Again and for the last time, Los Altos did not only get beat by St. Francis, they got statistically SHUT DOWN completely.

So keep posting those virtual victories...Every one of them is a compliment to the Amat Family.

LA vs. Amat

Calpreps predicts :
LA 24, Amat 21(@Los Altos)
LA 22, Amat 21(@Amat)
LA 22, Amat 21(Neutral site)

The Conquerors are the KINGS of the SGV!

"Dan"

That's just stupid.

Don't bring that; Coulda, woulda, shoulda (begging) crap in here. It's demeaning to the players actual effort.

The players who drew those flags, are the same ones that help open the holes that he ran through.

Aram on your William Wallace stats you also have to consider that he lost a few hundred yards and at least 3 td's because of several big play's throughout the season that were called back due to the penalty prone year that West Co was having
because of the offensive change. I also remember a 70 yard punt return for a td that he lost due to a meaningless penalty that didn't affect the play.

Since we are talking coaches, and not MVP'S anymore I want to give props to the coaching staff of the San Gabriel High School of the teams of 74 thru 76. which back in those days beat everyone in the old Mission Valley League easy. Schurr, Monrovia, Alhambra, Arroyo, El Monte, and Rosemead

Skip Herrington
Pete Zotovich
Jim Pruitt
Bill O'Neil
Bruce Boone
Bill Meza

my coach told me aram said that the covina qb is gonna win the mvp of the valley

" Amats victories over Rancho Cucamonga & St Francis cemented there throne in sgv"
Still trying to use that comparison Orca, you still won't consider West Co was missing 4 starters including 2 of their 3 speed threats, and Will Wallace was also out half the game [wich was when Rancho scored their 2 TD's], the Bulldogs never got the three speed threats together in the same game except for the Mater Dei game, if the rest of their team remained in tact & if they had the Wallace Bro's & Tyler Hockenhull for the whole season they could have beaten anyone in the sgv including Amat, they would also have taken their division., You got a hint of how good they were when they switched back to their old offense which cut out the penalties & fumbles they were making with their new offense, but you still have to consider they didn't have the younger Wallace & for the last 2 games & Will was playing hurt when they lost to Trab. Hills [so they had little speed again], & if you add in Hockenhull there would have been to many skill players on this team for anyone in the area to contain. The sad fact is that they didn't field this full team so they can't be given the credit that I wish they could have attained.
Now even with their dream team they could have had this year, they still would have lost to the
2005 Amat team wich was stacked with talent & beat matter Dei 28 to 7, so you see I do have a good sense of how good the better teams of D1 are.

joe no one cares damien and amat arent playing eachother anytime soon so quit living in the past.

no one cares we arent playing amat for a while so quit living in the past

No questions - just answers.

It looks to me like the Calpreps computer gives far more credit to Damien wins against their competition without factoring in strength of schedule. That's why the "computer" " predicted a close 21-17 ballgame, when it was really a blowout in which the Spartans failed to get in the end zone.

What that tells me is that the same "computer" predicting an 8 pt Damien win - could very well have been reversed on the gridiron.

It is a shame that in one of Damiens best years EVER and amats worst year EVER the Spartans chose not to find out for sure. Maybe they were concerned about what they might find out!

...Listen to us...we've been relegated to talking about "virtual football". Let's talk baseball...no - amat's got a couple of *National Championships this decade...how about basketball...wait- the Lancer's have a recent CIF championship banner on their wall too! How about girl's basketball...
Oops! Sorry ! Never mind!

LA preview...big deal your gunna be a star on a frosh team...what coach is gonna start a freshman at varsity, especially at LA i dnt think so...too much talent buddy

Joe Amat,

Calpreps was correct on the Amat victory for 2005. Off on the spread.

Any Questions?

"LA preview"

Stay at DE. The 2006 Frosh team already has a 6' 300# DT.

P.S. Don't be surprised if you're not the "biggest" kid out there next year. They tend to grow 'em big in these parts...

Everyone,

You all are really starting to act like BITCHES Amat, Damien, McD supporters, CO, Shut the f### up already and man up.

P.S. Elote man stays away from Covina afraid some punk might rob him after he gets loaded and disrespects his whole damn neighborhood

Wow that's pretty crazy to be talkin LA preview .... I go to LA n ur barely an 8th grader talkin smack ..... Just wait till u come and play for LA n show what u got on the field ... Until then keep your mouth shut you dont have any right talking about High School football yet.

Amat vs Damien?

Calpreps also says that if their was a virual matchup of
Amat/Damien in 2005 at Damien (La Verne, CA) it would be

Bishop Amat (La Puente, CA) 27, Damien (La Verne, CA) 17

However, we all know that that much up really occured and
Amat won 31-3.

So how accurate is Calpreps.com?

Any questions?

Score

He needs to make a varsity team first!

Bluorca,

I think LA Preview wants to play in CIF, that's why he is choosing Los Altos.

Well, being that a 06 matchup between Damien and Amat is not physically possible, perhaps a scientific matchup between the two teams is all we have.

This is how Calpreps would predict the outcome of this game:

If Amat did not offer you a scholarship, either you made no effort to talk to the right people, your grades are lacking, or your game just is not as good as you think it is.

Amat is interested in those who can keep their grades up AND play ball at the highest level. Best of luck to you at Los Altos.

I pretty much ignore any comment from anyone involving Damien and Amat. If Damien had been more of an opponent to Amat in the past, I would write more but most years Amat vs. Damien has been a mismatch. Damien had a GREAT team this year and Amat had a rebuilding team (including head coach) but because Damien lost to Los Altos who lost to St. Francis and Amat beat St. Francis, an Amat vs. Damien game this year would have been a close one. And this is significant because one would think, with all the troubles that Amat had this year, that Damien would rock Amat's socks. But I truly believe that Amat STILL would have been very competitive againts Damien and would have more than likely beat Mendrun and co. Damien has only managed to beat Amat like 5x out of the 20+ years playing each other. To be honest, I'm surprised it took Damien this long to stop agreeing to play Amat. Damien is a great school both in academics and athletics, but even to this day, Amat remains KING of the SGV when it comes to football. Many from Amat will consider this year's season a disaster but even so...Amat's victories over St. Francis and Rancho Cucamonga have cemented their throne in the SGV.

Every SGV team including Damien better pray that they don't play the Lancers next season...

Hey,

Any school looking for 6' 185 lb incoming freshman plays DE/OL 7 year vet.

SCHOOLS OF INTEREST

LA: strong verbal
BISHOP: to much $$$$ (I'll save my parent's some money for college)
Charter: to far of a drive (don't wanna be late to school!)
Cantwell: stick your scholarship up your ass!!! (with red hot pokey thing)

I guess my minds made up!!!

It was fun being on the blog for the most part. Without it I would have never seen Covina's Mc D and Ralph Diaz play and that alone made all the crap bearable. They were both awesome. Maybe someone else can take over the Bloggers Pizza Blast..I'm out. I know 74-Colt Alumni offered $200 to Aram and I'll match those $200 as well. This isn't about football any more is just personal crap.

I still wonder how with all the help some people got over the summer they never had the decency to log on and say, "Yes Frank or Sergio or Jaime or Beto helped my son" or "Yes Frank and Sergio or Jaime or Beto helped me (player)". But hey that's life in the big city and we're all responsible for our actions and inactions. It was a pleasure helping those players out. Heard Sergio's still working the phones on their behalf...if he only knew.

Thanks Mr. McDonough and especially "Wings" for the kind words. God bless you both.

Final odes to Coach Ruedaflores from the Star News/ Fred's Blog. Maybe others have similar feelings about "their" former coaches that will come forward and share before the ALL League and All Valley picks come out and people get "nuts" again.

Aram, As always..great job...even when we disagreed you had the kids in mind fisrt and foremost. You must be doing something right if you've got a Cal bearette in your corner.

I played for Coach Ruedaflores at Salesian High School in 1977. He was a legend even then. His determination and desire, examples to everyone.
I was a 4th string lineman at the start of my senior year after playing QB and safety the previous years at Salesian. I had never played lineman before that season. We had a "pride drill" to start every practice. Two players going head to head, firing out of three point stands. You left when you won or competed to his standards. I failed 18 times! In a row! Exhausted and at my breaking point I struggled to get up. I hear a voice in my head, "get up!. Get up! GET UP!!" I heard the whistle and felt the pain of a helmet in my back, Coach had blown the whistle with me on my stomach. And then I heard THAT voice in my ear, "Get up Corona! Don't quit! GET UP!" I looked to my right and Coach Ruedaflores was inches from my face. I looked at him and without a word I knew.
Coach said, "Corona! We're going to do this together! Me and you!" We both lined up side by side against another player. " Corona, we're going on my whistle!" At the whistle I gave it all I had. Driving my legs and feeling Coach there with me as we sent the player to the ground. "Corona!, see that's the way! Good job!" I'll never forget that day as I'm sure many other former players can relay similar stories. In my mind I played for a GIANT.

Later that season I became the starting right guard. Playing next to Rey Mero I started the last four games of the season. I was a game captain after starting the season buried at 4th string. Coach Ruedaflores taught me alot about football but he taught me more about life.

Years later I went to see my brother play a passing league game @Alhambra, In the middle of the game Coach asked my brother, "Hey Corona, how's your brothers?" He told Coach I was on the sidelines. Coach blew his whistle and interrupted the game!

He walked over to me and hugged me at midfield. Asked about my life, my future and wished me well."It's good to see you Frank. Come by anytime!" When I walked off that field, with both teams wondering who the hell I was to stop their game, I felt like I had won the Super Bowl.

Great men are remembered in the hearts and minds of the people they touch and the lives they change for the better. Coach Ruedaflores is a great man, a friend and my coach for life. Thank you for being there when I needed a strong hand to help me.

Coach Ruedaflores is the best coach anyone can ever have he is caring helpful and always knows how to get the job done. He doesn't just help you get ready for the game and football but he makes sure that you will be able to learn and be prepared for the things that you have to go though in life when you get older and have to make decisions also while being here at Alhambra High School. He has taught me alot of stuff about how to handle life when things get tough and to never give up on anything no matter what you do to, have pride in it. I will never forget the things that he has done for me and taught me to use in life. I will always love and respect him for being such a great inspiration and person.

No disrespect to Coach Ruedeflores whatsoever. He is a legend and represents everything that is good about coaching high school sports. I wish we had him, or someone like him at amat. We certainly understand tradition and the need to get back to that in our own house.

However, if I represented a different school I would never bring up the need to be like Phil Cantwell, Gary Marinovich, Dennis Mclaughlin, Jim Patricio, Mark Paredes, or Tom Salter. I'd leave that to the Lancers. Maybe another school can aspire to the qualities that made those coaches successful. And certainly ALL coaches should aspire to Coach Ruedeflores qualities.

Isn't it great to have all of those memories, and disappointing when players in the present may leave high school without similiar experiences.

Joe Amat,

Just thought people should read this piece by Fred Robledo that ran in Sept. Star News Blog/Paper about retiring Coach Gilbert Ruedaflores from Alhambra High School and Salesian High School. Coach Ruedaflores is loved and respected by his players for more than wins and loses. Maybe hearing it from someone else will put new perspective on Salesian Alumni's respect and love for Coach.... that's not living in the past.

In August, we profiled Alhambra High School football coach Gil Ruedaflores, who can win his 100th career victory at Alhambra when the Moors travel to face undefeated South Pasadena on Friday at 7 p.m.
In response to that feature, former Moors player Victor Barrios wrote in with these kind words, which I thought I'd share.
I just read your article regarding Coach. I played for him his first year at Alhambra in 1989. I moved to my grandma's house that year from Anaheim. I was a gang member from Orange County moving to the San Gabriel Valley. I remember first meeting Coach with my dad when I enrolled at Alhambra. To my surprise Coach was my dad's coach when my dad played football at Salesian. Coach knew my grandfather and many of my uncles who had attended either Salesian or Alhambra. Coach gave me an opportunity to be a part of something special. My new gang became my football brothers, some who I still stay in contact with today. I graduated in 1991 and unfortunately I moved back to Anaheim. Within months after graduating I was shot by a rival gang member and left paralyzed. I remember the Coaches visiting me at UCI Medical Center. Never have I felt that I let people that believed in me down. With his voice in my ear saying "Refuse to Lose" I went on to college and I am now teaching for the Anaheim Union School District. I have coached baseball, soccer, softball and basketball with the same passion that Coach taught me. I also follow in his footsteps of making the team a family and teaching my players to be loyal to the team. He is a father figure to me and I owe him for the best two years of my life when I played football for him.
Ruedaflores has indicated this will probably will be his final season. Thanks coach, for all the players you inspired and continue to inspire.

ALHAMBRA - A former player once thanked Alhambra High School football coach Gil Ruedaflores for - of all things - being hard on him during brutal summer workouts.
"He had just come back from Desert Storm, and he said if it wasn't for all the `Hell Weeks' we put him through, he would have never made it," Ruedaflores said. "When players come back and tell you something like that, it makes it all worthwhile."
Lou Torres, Alhambra's athletic director and a close friend of Ruedaflores, remembers the time a distraught former player walked up to Ruedaflores during a fund-raiser. The man said his business was failing and his mother had just passed away.
"Coach took him aside and had a real heart-to-heart with him," Torres recalled. "I'll never forget it. Before the kid walked way, he turned to Gil and said, `Thanks, and I thank God every day that you came into my life.' "
There are many such stories about Ruedaflores, who's entering his 19th year as head coach at Alhambra and 42nd year in coaching. Yet Ruedaflores says a career that started as a freshman coach at St. John Bosco in 1964 probably will end after this season - if he can stand the pain that long.
In 2004, Ruedaflores had emergency appendectomy surgery during the summer and was forced to miss the first five games of the season. He has had two surgeries since, most recently in June - both stemming from his initial surgery.
Thus he reluctantly is contemplating retirement, most likely following the season.
"In all the years I've known him, last year was the first time I saw him sit down on the field," Torres said. "This is a man who loves to coach with fire and refuses to change. I worry that he's putting his health at risk, but that's how much he cares about this program."
As much as he would hate to leave his job, Ruedaflores admitted it's becoming difficult to maintain the pace.
"I like to think I'm a tough guy, but physically being out here is really demanding," the 60-year-old coach said. "It's getting tougher to weather the storm.
"I'm going to have to sit down and take a knee from time to time, and I hate to do that. Even as a coach, you don't want to show your weaknesses. You have to show your strength."
For those who know Ruedaflores, his strength often has been in words and in the genuine way he treats his players and coaches, as if they were family.
"Last year he struggled, and we thought it would be his final year, but Gil wants to make sure he leaves the program in good hands," Torres said. "I can't become the head coach because I'm the athletic director, and you can't do both.
"Gil would like someone who's part of the program to replace him, and so would I. He's always taught us about loyalty, values and work ethic. That's what every player who has played for him has taken with them, and that includes guys who became sheriffs and doctors, who came from Boyle Heights and turned their life around. Gil doesn't just talk, he listens, and he cares."
There are no CIF championship banners . In fact, when the Moors won the Almont
League title in 2002, it was Ruedaflores' only league title and the school's first league championship since 1964.
"It was sure great to get that monkey off our back," Ruedaflores said of winning the school's first league title in 38 years. "We had other good years, going to the (CIF) semifinals in 1994. But I'm just as proud of the teams that over-achieved. Some (teams) might not have had as much success, but they had success where I come from."
There also is a milestone on the horizon. With 97 career victories, Ruedaflores stands a good chance of reaching the century mark by mid-season.
"That's for my current and former players and coaches to celebrate," said Ruedaflores, who has a career record of 97-86. "I've never counted victories, but I imagine it will be pretty nice to reach 100 wins.
"But in my coaching life span at Alhambra, I don't put a lot of priority in that. It's nice to accomplish, but I'm more proud to hear what these kids have done long after they've graduated."
And there's probably no better example than Torres, who has been with Ruedaflores nearly every step of the way.
"That man took a little kid from East Los Angeles and inspired him to be something," Torres said.
In 1974, Ruedaflores landed his first head coaching job at Salesian High School, where one of his players was Torres.
Ruedaflores always liked Torres, and after Torres graduated from high school, Ruedaflores sought him out in a Sears parking lot, where he was working.
"He asked me, `You gonna fold boxes all your life?' " Torres recalled. "He asked me to be one of his assistants (at Salesian), and he steered me to college."
Ruedaflores later coached at L.A. Harbor, East L.A. and Glendale colleges. At Glendale in 1983, Ruedaflores was defensive coordinator and helped bring Torres on as an assistant. Torres already had graduated from college and was in the process of finishing his Masters degree at Cal State L.A.
Six years later, when Ruedaflores became head coach at Alhambra in 1989, he brought Torres on as an assistant. He insisted he wouldn't take the job unless Torres was given a full-time teaching position, which was granted.
It wasn't until 1996 that Torres became the school's athletic director and Ruedaflores' boss.
"In 30-plus years of coaching, I've never been a head coach," Torres joked. "And I wouldn't change it, because Gil Ruedaflores is, and always will be, Alhambra football."

do i smell haters on workman??? i think i do. just because they aren't known yet for a winning tradition, but i think we have the best coaches in the valley. so be ready because a winning tradition will start. this is aram's blog site, at least show him some respect.

Wow talk about striking a nerve. Folks you have to remember something here. It is all about academics. This is HS football! The football program does not exist without it. If you’re going to select a MVP it must have a link to academics. The core purpose of any school sports program comes down to the grades. Just ask any of the coaches struggling to keep their ace athletes on the field. Without a 2.0 grade point average they don’t play, it is part of the CIF rules.

I see some of you are little hot and heavy about the morale issues. But let’s keep it real simple and focus on the two most important attributes. Is the MVP getting it done on the field and off the field IN THE CLASSROOM? Why make this so complicated.

Just keep it simple!

BTW: What do you do when they come for you?

I dont see why everyone gets all butthurt about the award. It's not like its a simple decesion made on the spot. It takes time, patience, and alot of research.

The reason why some schools such as charter oak,los altos, south hills, westco are all big headliners is because they have a rich history of winning. , so workman had an okay season this year and what?. Lets face it the montview teams have been blown out by non league teams year after year.

Got yo back you fool that is just one example of a team that didn't get its props.

shoulda been coulda been wilson had tons of talent but couldnt do nothing so i guess in the end it doesnt matter cuz now he is all by himself over there iran blandon is gone bernal is gone. lets not even get into there "d". all that switching schools crap wont work and if does we wont hear about these so called "stars" cuz when u get to the college ranks everyone is that good everyone is ur speed....yup big deal

well well well...if it isnt another one of the shoulda coulda woulda bloggers! we shoulda had bernal coulda had gilmore...but you didnt becuase theres no tradition over at workEDman...if my kid had a speck of athletic abililty...shoot if he could get in a dam stance i wouldnt send him to workman...so you guys went from horrible to bad...big deal

The cholo league??? are u serious thats the best you can come up with. dude come on ur wanna start throwing racial remarks fine we can go ahead and start doing that, BUT sum of us are mature enough to know RIGHT from WRONG but if u havent grown up thats cool u can stay where your at...on to football first of all i think the workman team should get there credit where credit is due, and to talk smack about a team that raley goes to cif and that to those kids over there that that season was there life, is absurd and wrong. all these other schools go out and find there guys. They have them come on down when sum of them are suppose to go a certain skewl with in there area. A good example is Tim Gilmore, who went to grandview middle but is at wilson right now...he my friends should be at workan. Daniel Bernal is another one who should be there. We got guys and coaches working with what they got. Homegrown players that probably never played football in there lives and find this oultet to stay off the streets. i dont wanna go on too much but give sum credit to that team. just a little input alex silva and fransisco "paco" ruiz should get something. Paco could play for ne school in the sgv. ok im done

respect is all i want

it was a great year. outs!

aram dude i got your back...dont listen to that clown talkin about workman...hey HELLO workman fan have you ever heard the phrase..." YOU CANT POLISH A TERD " how do u expect the guy to talk about workman theres nothin to talk about!!....whoa! everyone get excited workman got 1st place in the cholo leauge!!! lets make workman a topic on the blog and watch it go straight to hell

Aram,

All you do is talk about the same teams charter oak,los altos, south hills, westco all year long same shit you never give any other team props like workman what about the good season they had ,no instead you talk about a .500 team like south hills, what a joke because they won there first game by 7 points and than got there asses kicked in round 2 ,dude quit brown noses you look retarded start giving credit to all teams not just the teams of the coaches that recruit. You ask if i had a problem with you i have a big problem all in due time i will show you how big of a joke you are.

JOE AMAT

Another real life post!

Damien Dad seems to be a little to emotional!

As a competitor it is great to see someone flounder when they get backed into a corner. I remember, fondly, the look of some Monarchs at the end of a 1st quarter flogging. That's what D.D.'s last post was like. Haymakers against the ropes just trying to fight his way out. Nice to see the spunk though. I laugh at the "...never played...punk ass cheerleader...mind your own business, etc" comments. Almost like reverting to "I know you are but what am I?"

As I look at my big Championship Ring with the "Golden A", I think that I don't have to live vicariously thru others and dwell on what happened at some other school back in the day. The amat folk were not cannabalistic to each other, but were all over administration and staff that do not live up to the standards that have been set by those that have walked the field and hung banners before them
(I loved seeing ours unveiled - you?... Oh never mind)

Your sentence, "Any schools worse than Amat and Damien in terms of hostility towards each other?" can only be interpreted one way , grammatically speaking. But I guess you did not precede those Spartans headed to Cal. M.I.T, Princeton - or any where else. Again living vicariously through others. And don't start comparing alumni - not a good game plan.

As far as talking football, we incurred your rant about OJ, Denny McLain, and the moral majority after this simple post, that I stand by:

The Wooden Award, named after the greatest coach of all time, states the following:

Candidate Criteria:
Candidates must be full-time students in an accredited NCAA college or university.
Consideration should be given to scholastic achievement and aspirations. All candidates must have a cumulative 2.00 grade point average since enrolling in their current university.
Candidates should be those who contribute to team effort.

Candidates should be considered on their performance over the course of the entire season (pre-conference, conference and tournament play).
AND
Candidates must exhibit strength of character, both on and off the court.

Joe Mama, Damein DAD, PADM

GET A LIFE! YOUR A COMPLETE WORM OF A MAN!

Remember the phrase 0%

haha i think it's funny how people argue on a website like this
bunch of losers get a life.

Charter Oak will win cif next year and that's whats up

Well Joe Amat you are an ass and stupid at the same time....I said the "hostility" was internal to the Catholic schools themselves...as in Amat vs, Amat or Damien vs. Damien...remember when Amat bloggers asked for an "internal truce" between Amat bloggers and Damien bloggers did the same. Not that it was between Damien and Amat. You simple minded piece of trash. Do ANY other schools go thru that kind of mess other than the Catholic schools here on this BLOG???

As far as picking "one name" how many "new" names have I had to deal with...so mind your own business..I liked it better when the Amat "never played..always bitched crowd" was silent and all I had to do was chat with the Amat ballers who actually laced them up or were at least fans of "football" and not some punk ass cheerleader.

And blogger "Amat Rules"...or are you Damien Student (same format and you explained "Damien Student"s apparent joke but forgot to sign in as Damioen Student ...opps!)just like a bitch to look sideways and ask Bluorca for help..."Can you believe this guy"...I know punks like you back in th day..."can you believe this guy" (looking at the boys for help) please.

Talk football. Leave it there.

We're ALL making ASSSES of ourselves. Trying to be tough guys and clever anonymous bull shitters. Every "KNOWN" dad or individual on this blog has been thru this petty crap. Mike the Clone and Bluorca never mentioned who they are and even joked not going out for Pizza because of crap like this. I see there point! Even making jokes about security...lol If you really have a problem with someone "work it out" that's what you tell your kids right?

It's a football blog. Get over it. Don't make it personal. Besides if you really wanted to make it personal you would...because we all KNOW each other. You anonymous little twerp. Grow a set.

Hey Joe you coming over for Pizza? Bring your Amat guide and tell everyone all about....oh sorry dude..it's just about high school football..my bad.

Pick up a paper ...Damien CIF Water Polo MVP, Defensive Player of the Year and Team Captain...will be playing at Cal, M.I.T, Cal... that's why people go to Damien. Education. Last year Princeton, Yale, Cal...Year before that same....

This is in regarding the player's that make their teams rock. I don't see Matt Castaneda's name in that list. Without Castaneda at Qber L.A. does nothing these past two year's. Nobody has a great season at reciever, running back, tightend or anywhere on OFFENCE! He didn't play Defence this year, but he would of been a presense out there.

I think that I was right on the multiple personality thing. P.A.D.M., Damien Dad, cop/coach, Mr Corona, Beto's little brother, whatever. Pick one and stick with it.

Hostility towards each other? I think that it is a one way street. Kind of like the Lakers/Clippers. I NEVER hear amat folks that foster any hostility towards Damien - you have to win a couple of our showdowns first before the hostility is reciprocal. But I guess you can't do that since you dropped the game. Or maybe put up a banner or two in that sparkling new gym. You can put it next to the "mini-tron" on the wall. What the budget didn't call for a Jumbotron? My big screen is about the size of that wannabe Zenith that the Spartans have on the gym wall. But keep trying to follow in the footsteps of big brother. Remember that, basically, Spartans eventually evolved into Lancers. Unfortunately for both of us the only person that makes Msg. Carroll look like a good administrator is Father Travers.

Maybe the Spartans are hostile because there are females at amat . Or that the players get to test the waters at the the highest level possible instead of wallowing in the local public school league, with periodic success, and competing against all of the schools that they are stealing students from.

The Lancers respect the Spartans and there is room for both of us. In fact, if Damien administration would not continue to fight the releaguing process we would love to lock horns in the same league year after year. Damien, amat, St Francis, St Paul makes a ton of sense. Even throw in St John Bosco if you want. But they didn't ask me.

"Mind your own business"?!?!?...I thought that this was a blog...you know..a place where you discuss topics, share thoughts, exchange ideas, and even comment on comments. There is no "minding your own business! On a blog everybody's business is everybody's business - if you can't take it listen to your wife and stay off.

And as far as the "old Amat"...no one is living in the past - only trying to recapture it. At least the Lancers continue to fight for what is right within our own hallowed halls as opposed to trying to relive some glory days at Salesian or living through Coach Ruedeflores success while riding the coat tails of some player you happened to coach when he was a little tyke-and trying to take some residual credit for his improvement.

Damein Dad or now P.A.D.M.

I guess the Mahoney' joke went over your head!

Your right up there with Roger- No standards!

Bulcora

Can you believe this old fart!

THE PAC-5 IS CALLING YOU ALL TO GREATNESS!!!

WHO HAS THE BALLZ!?!?!?!?

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?

CAN YOU BE BOTH SCHOLAR AND ATHLETE?!?!?!?

NOW IS YOUR CHANCE TO SCHOOL THE REAL POWER OF ORANGE COUNTY!!!

IT'S HERE!
IT'S NOW!
FIGHT FOR PRIDE!
FIGHT FOR TRADITION!
FIGHT FOR THE SGV!
FIGHT FOR YOU!

AMAT!
AMAT!
AMAT!

LET'S SMASH EM!
SMASH EM!
SMASH EM!

ON BLUE!
ON BLUE!
ON BLUE!

MIGHTY ARE THE MEN THAT WEAR BLUE AND GOLD!

WE WILL SHINE!

After what I wrote to highlight McD I could see how that offends Damien Student ( yeah right he's a student..punk ass Dad more like it) or Jeffrulerson (came in just for that...what an ass wipe) Joe Amat what can I say...following suit as cannabalistic private schools do. Any schools worse than Amat and Damien in terms of hostility towards each other? Mind your own business Joe and clean your own house first. Amat's in "deep" already. The Damien crap is old, tired and gutless. Always was and always will be. Everyone apologized to each other ... other than the gutless punks that just never let up. As far as old Amat ...it's over. Guess the "mouth" won't win any MVP awards either. What was that assault and battery or just assault. Kid you have a year to file charges.

Damien "Student" errrr alias Punk Ass Dad....Mahoney has his time all tied up trying to explain how he let ALL those abuse cases go on for 20+ years and did nothing to protect kids from those abusive priests or why he didn't call the police instead of transfer priests to other parishes so they could continue their nonsense. What did Mahoney pay out last week $60,000,000 to settle 45 cases! That's sixty million dollars!!! Brother that's a whole lot of Hail Mary's and Our Father's don't you think? And he has 500+ more to go. Hope Damien's gym's paid off! Same goes for Amat...hope that gym's paid off! So maybe I'll refrain from asking Mahony about standards. He's in court this week, last time I read the LA Times, in the Baker case where the former priest testified he told Mahoney all about his "habits" for years. And yet Mahoney did nothing!

I apologize to all the bloggers for the Damien crap once again. I guess talking football offends my "Klan". It was fun talking about football and all but the wife said "If I can't play nice...go under cover before you find out who's pulling your chain." I knew I shouldn't have put Damien Dad that's everybody else's property. What a joke!

Why are my kids at Damien? Oh yeah for the education..it's been that alright! LOL! 99.9% of the parents are super cool at Damien...must be some E. Coli parent batch I contracted with the .1%.

Joe Amat

It's okay, critical reading isn't part of SAT scores over at Covina. LOL

Your a riot! Maybe you should be on Leno!

Colt Alumni

I think something flew over your head.

We're not talking about James, and that's great he's going somewhere or has that opportunity.

The discussion is Student/Atheltes!

Who cares about MCD, everyone knows he's going nowhere.

Joe Amat

Great post!!!!!!!!!!

Colt Alumni,

No offense taken, but here is a little blogger education for you.

Take a look at your post. Do you see how your name is UNDER the post that you wrote. If you did, you will also realize that the post you question was written by "Thinking beyond the white lines".

I accept the apology.

Joe Amat
Another great post!

Damien Dad – wow, maybe you can learn by READING AND ABSORBING below:

Role Models, Character, Honor, Code, Ethics, Grades, Citizenship, and leading by example are a standard in life and athletics.

Dear Joe Amat
Last time I check Jamal James of Covina was the second highest recurit in the area with offers from Washington, Oregon, Colorado,Utah State and others, so before you start talking about McD and how he has no offers his teammate has just as many as anyone in the area.

Damien Dad

Get over yourself! Now your trying to push back on us students that don't agree with your dumb a--

Maybe you should go speak to Cardinal Mahoney and discuss what standards such be!!

Wow! Schizophrenic is the word that comes to mind.

All season long our favorite poster talks about ethics , life lessons, and how it was in the "old days" at Salesian. Then when peopple talk about having standards he flips the script and goes off the deep end about OJ, Civics and only having standards if the award is named after someone!?! Then students call you on the carpet and you are concerend with their Christian behavior and that their Catholic Education has left them with poor standards. Next time just post as Sybil(if you're under 35, don't ask, just look it up).

I'm not sure if saying that Coach Wooden was the greatest coach is what got your panties in a bunch - because he may pale in your eyes compared to your revered Ruedeflores. Ask him what he thinks. I bet he stresses character and taught you that sometimes, even when you are only 16, there are consequences for mistakes. And this is not a condemnation of any single player, as I'm not privy to any facts involving our potential nominees.

But I do know that many little future SGV athletes are out there playing and competing on the fields and courts and they look up to the athletes that they watch on Fridays. (Lord knows you remind us of how many of them you coached) Your boy that you love to mention, Ron Cuccia, went to Harvard. Do you think that academics and character were important to him? I played Nerf football in the end zones of MSAC watching Haden, McKay and Sciarra do their thing in front of 10,000+ during the REAL glory days of Amat (before they became the amat of today) They were role models of the best kind. A future Rhodes Scholar, nonetheless. It would be a shame for our youth to aspire to anything less and model any other behavior.

BTW, Peyton Manning got beat by Charles Woodsen, a two-way player and punt-returner on a 12-0 National Championship team. Tough to argue that one. And yes, I am sure of the Wooden Award criteria. Rarely do I post something if I'm not sure.

After all, better to not post and let others think you are a fool than to babble and remove all doubt.

Take note.

hello,

do you have some sort of problem with me?

Damien crowd...as always you guys never disappoint. Instead of taking the high ground "and turn the other cheek" you come in here and lower yourselves to the least common denominator. Just like you to lay in wait and pounce from behind. That's pretty Christian of you all. I see that private Chatholic education and your high standards are in full effect. Amazing. sad but amazing.

This is not going to be the all area team its more like the all aram team, favortism

jeffrulerson,

10,9,8,7, TOO DAMN FUNNY!!!!!!!!!

He has proably been typing a response for the last 3 hours!!!

mcd had 7 td's against st joseph in the second round!!!!thats amazing!!mcd is mvp, even he is questionable, whos second? please!!!

Well, the reason McD is questionable as the mvp is...
- He had no real quality opponents.
- He didn't perform in the playoffs against easy opposition.

It isn't the scandal's but the fact that it is a true question fo how good he has been against nobodies...When BP was like your third best team that you faced...You know something isn't right..

Aram,

Thanks for this blog it really is a great thing. Seniors God bless all of you and the life decisions that all of you have to make.Parents thanks for the last 4 years on the field (Miramonte League) amazing to see these kids grow in talent from freshman year til now. I am partial to LA Rex I love you son God Bless You. And I swear this football season is done time now to blog basketball. may God Bless All of You

Foss' Dad

Oh great! Not again!

Awaiting response from Damien Dad in 10, 9, 8, 7, 6...

Damien Dad represents about 0.00% of what the school is about

Please do not think he is what Damien is about because its not anything like that.

Congrats to Damiens all area Boys!!!!!!!!

Damien Dad

Your a fool and disgrace to the Damien name. Change your post name, because standards are what make the student/athlete here at Damein

Damien Dad

Your are truly a JOKE!

Maybe you can learn something from the great Oaks Christian because Damien surely isn't teaching you much!

Like i said stats on maxprep are not correct kids get a hold of passwords and put what they won't and aram if you can say ww is more of a mvp then mcd that makes me laugh ww did good this year but mvp i think not besides westco didn't even post there stats on maxprep so were did you get them from ww himself.

Damien Dad:

You said in your post, "OJ killed someone in 1964 or when ever..
Then you went on to say, "O'Leary~ Civics Lessons...We're all presumed innocent...the plea is what it is..."

Damien Dad: History lesson, OJ was found innocent by a jury of his peers.

Set some standards...right and you would know. OJ killed someone in 1964 or when ever ....and he "didn't" do it in 1990 something. Let's go backwards...now and cleanse the record books...let's start with Denny Mc Lain Tigers MVP...three time felony!

Who would you nominated ...collegiate standards? They're kids!!

How would you feel getting an Award because enough "purists" eliminated the "one" who won it on the field..that would be pretty!

Just like Peyton Manning winning the Heisman...oh yeah...HE didn't win it either even though he was a model citizen...great player...high morals...great work ethic...model student..great role model... four year Academic ALL American...and stayed in school ALL FOUR YEARS!!!! Stop being the moral majority...talk about living in the past!!!

What are records if not the past? How do we measure greatness if not from Past performances...Talk about living in the past...okay Last Year's Player of the Year...McD! How's that for the past? He only doubled and tripled his out put from last year...this is getting old.

Let's just give it to someone from the high brow crowd....Guys like you belong at Oaks Christian or Orange County were they wrestle awards away from deserving players through politics and back door deals. And look into people's backgrounds to slime away merit when their player's can't measure up and compete.

Joe Amat~ "C" Avg. ? Are you sure? Besides this Award isn't named after ANYONE..It isn't a measure of a man award it's......Player of the YEAR! You want all this moral and academic and off field criteria find someone to name the Award after..then your arguments have merit.

O'Leary~ Civics Lessons...We're all presumed innocent...the plea is what it is...What did you do at 16 that you're not proud of?

JOE AMAT

THAT'S GREAT!

STANDARDS, STANDARDS, STANDARDS!

ENOUGH SAID!

Someone should look at the criteria of the Heisman- It will open your eyes!

Aram- Publish your standards prior to the season!

Candidates must excel in both offense and defense.

Candidates should be considered on their performance over the course of the entire season (pre-conference, conference and tournament play).

AND

Candidates must exhibit strength of character, both on and off the court.

WOW

Last time I checked, Aaron Harris, Wallace and Mendrun were getting D1 looks.

I guess the recruits don't do their homework!

Where's MCD going????

Dear Colt Alumni
Do not mention players personal lives on the blog its not necessary, stick to what happens on the field.

Lets just call it the OJ Award, since its only about performance LOL LOL

I guess all these old farts don't understand the meaning or grades, citizenship, honor, code of ethics, and role models.

Damien Dad

Quit living in the past! This is 2006 and the collegiate standards aren't just about performance anymore. They will spend their money on a complete package because there is too many good athletes that do have it all!

So just exactly - who would qualify as "Player Of The Year" I'm Just a mom with questions . . . No doubt it is a GREAT HONOR for the chosen, and I wouldn't want the job of deciding who's earned the Title! I would however hope that it's someone from Charter Oak! Let's see . . . You have MJ that has played both ways and played very well! AJ with his hits, Kannen - who's given us a good show, Lil Mikey Harrell that REALLY stepped it up at finals! Not to mention Chris Allen - they did not win the Title of CIF Champs, but without Chris where would they have been? I guess I would have to agree; and like to see the overall awards expanded - being that CO was never even expected to get as far as they did; I would give them an award. Yes a CHARGER FAN I am - and we should be proud of ALL our boys in the SGV ! Good luck on your decision . . . .

Most Valuable Player~

We all know what that means. At least the people who played the game know. Those that have been in the huddle know. Those that have coached the game know. Even the fans in the stands know this feeling. It's that feeling you get when "THAT" player goes down. That hush that swirls around the stadium...that silence you hear on both sidelines....that look of concern...that sinking feeling you get when "THAT" players can't get up. That stomach ache you get when the coaches finally turn and ask for the trainer...you know that feeling.."HE'S HURT!!!"

You also know that feeling when he gets up...stays in the game...goes back in the game and commands the respect of every person, player and coach in the stadium...HE'S THE MAN! I know we've all had that feeling that swells within us. We've seen greatness..."He's Back!" We look at each other on the field or in the stands or in the coaches box and shake our heads or pound our chest. We marvel when he looks pressure down..When he makes play after play...when he leads his team to victory...when he endures pain and somehow rises above the other players like a phoenix from the ashes and transcends the game. We die a little when he's the beaten warrior...we find solace seeing every opponent and coach congratulate our beaten warrior...We "see" the words..."Great Game! It was an honor to play against you" Our hero shakes every hand and struggles with the pain all great players wrestle..."Could "I" have done more to help "my" team?" It it his burden..the burden of all great players. How does "HE" do it? We mark it down in our sports memories. Log it down...I was there! I saw "HIM" I was there!...you know the story needs to be told. It doesn't need to be embellished...it speaks for itself. Twenty years from now people will remember their names...Ron Cuccia...Hardy Nicherson...Vernon Maxwell...Brigham Harwell...Shaun Cody....Mc Cutcheon...Brown...some are one year wonders and some are career busters...but all are high school legends. Part of our little world of high school sports. They are our heroes...I remember mine...The crowd shouted...Beto! Beto! Beto! Roosevelt High School's QB 5'7" 142 lb. Beto Corona 1974-75. He transferred from Salesain after his Junior year and lead a previously winless team to an undefeated league Championship and the Semi Final game!... I rememeber my "hero" do you remember yours? 30 years later people still ask if
