Alright, Alright who's the wise guy re-posting my Damien comments from a couple of months back.
OUT!
Mike the "real" Clone
And Randy please don't think I'm "mikey" OK...it's not me.....just letting you know that. You and I had our battle we're moving on OK. Besides I promised Aram I'd chill.
Aram,
Are you going to be printing all league in the paper when you find out who got it?
flatiron---....I'd like to see that number backed up on paper some where, but I will take your word on it for now....However, there can be no disputing that Claremont and Upland have a recent history of being more than formidable opponents, in FB...thx for the input on the santa fe league....and in the end I sitck to my guns, where are the CIF banners that say "CHAMPS"? Can Damien make a run into early Dec? recent history---says no.....I hear all this smack talk from the Spartan bloggers, yet....things get REAL quiet when that gets asked......
randy,
Damien had more Baseline victories than any other team in the league, overall. The old Santa Fe League was Pomona Catholic, Bishop Amat, San Gabriel Mission, St. Francis, and Bishop Alemany.
when is the game for cif players and location..
flat iron, I appreciate the history lesson, I really do, but as I recall.....Claremont and Upland usually had a say as to who the big dog was in Baseline league football...."ruling"...it just sounded like a bit a stretch....who was in that old santa fe league with damien?
Prior to ruling the Baseline league, Damien played in the San Antonio with Garey, Ganesha, Montclair, Claremont, Upland, Chino and later, Alta Loma and Don Lugo. When the Baseline formed and included Glendora, Damien went 12-0 against them in the first twelve meetings. Before that it was the Santa Fe, and when they were Pomona Catholic, they played in the Catholic League but that was back in the '50s. In the early 50,s they played Mater Dei...and in Yuma AZ. any game they could get. In the late 40's with coach Frampton it was hit or miss with anyone they could get and some short seasons.
I believe that in the early days (meaning '60s-early'70's)
that Damien was in the Sante Fe League.
other old timers??
question for the elders.......what league did Damien play in before the Baseline League? Have they ever been in all-private school league?
Congratulations Shaun Rosenthal, William Wallace, Nick Field, & Mike Natividad your all worthy of the honor & you definatly belong on that list. We'll miss you next year.
CIF, All CIF, means the best in your Division. That's a tall order. The best! The best stands out from the others. But there is the riddle...what makes a CIF selection. Here are some thoughts on the difficulty of CIF selections.
What constitutes best?
Body of work, career growth, exceptional individual performance, season growth, overall team performance, leadership, statistics, consistentcy, great big game performances, exceptional individual play, just has "it"?
A couple of players I saw this year had the "it" factor that makes them All CIF performers in my view.
1) Michael Mc Donough QB Covina exceptional in all areas. A consumate football player: "old school" tough, great field leadership skills, and a vicious defensive player and superior hitter. Big time performer in big time situations. Tremendous will to win. Great motor.
2) Mark Mendrun QB Damien exceptional in all areas. Great work ethic. Exceptional field generalship. A consumate football player: "old school" tough/"new school" smart, thinking man's athlete (great conditioning, great coordination and the will of a champion). Mendrun is a plug and play athlete, put him anywhere on the field and he's a star. Great motor.
3) Ralph Diaz Covina consumate football player. Great balance, exceptional closing speed, big time hitter, knows the game, plays as comfortable as anyone I've ever seen on the field. Handles big blockers, and plays the run as well as the pass. Could be an exceptional MLB for a Mid Major school. One reshirt year and away he goes. Great motor.
4)Jeff Lucero Damien exceptional game performer. Makes big plays in tough situations. Small, quick, fast, tough and a winner. If you see him play you won't forget him. But you'll be asking yourself..where did he come from because he covers alot of ground. Plays to win. Is not afraid to sacrifice his body to change the game. What a special, special player. Great motor.
These players, amongst others, are the players I really enjoyed watching play the game this season. They distinguished themselves because they stood out, made plays that changed the game and sacrificed themselves for the team's success. That's what ALL CIF means in my book . Maybe others have similar feelings about players from this season. Instead of slighting players let's rejoice in their exceptional play. Looking forward to others contributing their insights.
Joe, did you get a bad deal here in all CIF too? The Best, Only through a parents eyes.
Congrats to Jeff Lucero. He was easily a CIF caliber performer and yet Aram missed him as well.(All Area Honorable mention?) Lucero could have easily been Damien's Defensive MVP and yet...well at least the other coaches recognized Jeff's impact on the game. Anyone who knows football knows what goes on at all league and all cif meeting..you scratch my back I'll scratch yours. Ex-SEM coach Urias made mention of this in Aram's piece.( EM coaches voting "O" for every SEM player? Classless..even LB Joe Morales?) Ask any coach and it goes on far too often. Most of it's fair but sometimes you just scratch your head.
But for the most part...being ALL CIF is being ALL CIF..it's forever and well congratulations to all. Notice Norco two linemen Gerhart and Tello made Co-Inland Divisiob MVP's that's AWESOME !!!! (Yeah LINEMEN!!!)
Last point to Aram...notice how many players make 1st team? 4 running backs . 3 wide receivers...just like the Daily Bulletin. Could help out for next time...but people will still bitch. Present company included.
Too bad some kids get passed over. Smitty, Rabe from Damien deserved the 1st CIF Team nod and Luiten, Walsh deserved 2nd team. Must have been a numbers game.
In the old days( yup...those days) if you deserved it ...you earned it...you got it.
Case in point...one school once had 18 players winning 20 All League selections in one season. Wasn't a scrub league either (Loyola, St. John Bosco, Verbum Dei, Cathedral, Cantwell, Salesian). They didn't even win league. Their record was 6-3. That team of all league selections were 3 Sophs, 8 Jrs. 7 Srs. Tough to argue they didn't deserve it or "wait until next year" b.s. that I've noticed recently. Again that's Loyola and St. John Bosco and Verbum Dei coaches voting Salesian's 20 all League selections.( I'll post later what became of those players..)
Rabe not ALL CIF is a crime.
Best wishes to all the selections and good luck to the next year's selections.
Congrats to Amat's Fletcher! Hope West Point works out for him. Going to West Point and playing for Bobby Ross ..very cool!
Know that the CIF football teams are out, is there a game and if so when and where??????

for the mid-valley division, i have to disagree about the running backs.... i think it should've been James Davis and Lavelle Peterson.... I think that James is better than him and Dwight Broadnax... im not taking anything away from Peterson or Broadnax but they get alot of their yards because their lineman block for them.... James gets alot of his yards by himself...
What do u think Aram???

really now.....i'll bet Temescal Cyn has a different view on that, AND Los Altos, and SJB, and Chino Hills.....relax bro, they're good--but they aint no CIF champs.....
DAMIEN=MEN AMONGST CHILDREN
We should start talking about the school that had 5 players on the all cif inland division the Damien Spartans. 5 players in the very competivive inland division, they are Mark Mendrun senior QB,captain and Ut. Travis the man Eshardies senior start wide reciever. Steve De la Torre senior offensive lineman, Anthony hIle senior linebacker/captain also a kid that worked his butt off from the scout team last year to 1st team all cif senior defensive back Jeff Lucero. This kid is one of the hardest workers i have ever seen. Good job spartans
