CRISIS AVERTED: Amat loses three players, one starter to free agency ...
What looked like a potential disaster for the Amat Nation turned out to be not so bad. Amat coach Mark Verti confirmed Monday that three players left the school, but only one was a starter. Bryce McBride, as confirmed by Conqs coach Greg Gano, has checked-in at Los Altos. He's joined at LA by Amat back-up QB Blake Tillis. It could've been worse for Amat, considering last week that the hot rumor was that returning leading tackler Marcus Wagner was also headed for Los Altos and up to eight varsity players might be leaving the program.
Aram's thoughts: As I said when giving a way too early Top 10 for next season, Amat is going to be a very improved team next season. That thought was threatened by this supposed mass exodus, which really didn't take place. Despite McBride's exit, the Lancers look to still be in good shape with a good nucleus of returners. Amat's frosh team was very impressive this season and some of the varsity returners rank among the top players in the area. This week's events does not mean good times are here again at Amat. Those associated with the program should take heed in the saying "where there's smoke, there's fire." Fans are clearly fed up with the mediocrity, and that's being nice about it. The psyche of players should also be considered. Not winning and missing the playoffs makes Amat a undesirable place for kids/parents to pony up four or five dimes a year just to get so-so results. It does Amat no good for kids to see how much fun/success their peers are having at places like CO, LA or SH. Most Amat fans have an extreme amount of pride, but even the most die hard Lancer has to admit the school is in need of a great football season in a big way. If it doesn't happen soon ...

Blu,
For the record, I did not change my argument in regards to anything. If you look at my first post it compares Amat to both public and private alike. Agreed, the CO comparison was in error, but the LA report does show 70.4% of graduates having the required UC courses on their school website, with 75% of the students taking college prep courses. In addition, Newsweek listed LA in the top 5% of public schools in the country. Diamond Bar and Wilson were also on the list. Also, only 2 of the 4 private schools I used are in the OC.
Regarding Amat being in the hood, no dis there. But how is it not fair comparing them to the same parochials that are named dropped when sports are concerned, i.e. anyone in the Pac 5. Loyola is also in the hood and has been forever. That school was built on academics, period. Is the tuition higher?, yes. However it is not exclusive, thats pure bull. They have students from all economic backgrounds and all areas of LA, OC and the SGV. They also ensure that any student that demonstrates the ability to compete in the classroom has an opportunity to attend. Financial aide info is on the home page. Your take is a complete stereotype. 47% of the school population is minority. There are also many scholarship students that attend Loyola that dont play sports.
Amat could be that also, if people like you who are so intense about sports, directed that intensity toward the academic progress of the school as well. Or are you conceeding that Amat can't be that good? I hope not.
What would Loyola look like comparing themselves to public schools in their area? Pretty ridiculous you would agree. Guess what, they dont and would never. Bottom line, the Pac 5 is the pond you swim in, as you and many others love to boast. Those are your true peers, so thats where the true comparisons lay. Neither you nor I created that.
In regards to the college prep courses, yes Amat students are required to take them. However, the Amat requirements for graduatiion does not match up completely with UC eligibility requirements. Sorry, I not slamming you, just pointing out info that should be mentioned. Maybe thats the disconnect creating your low college admissions stat. 66% is low, for any parochial school, anywhere. If you think that is acceptable or something to cheer about from AMAT, then the education system is a bigger problem then any of us think, because your paying a pretty penny for 1 of every 3 AMAT students to go to a JC. Loyola had a total of 3 graduates total go to a JC. Thats on their web too.
Blu, you and I both know its easy to throw stones, but I'm saying its not very smart when you live in a glass house. Good luck to Amat on and off the field. You have a long road to go.

HAHA! I just saw this one!
Ya have to admit Academian, you looked pretty foolish making a ridiculous comparison in academics between Amat, Charter Oak, and Los Altos. Charter Oak "on par" and Los Altos "better." muahahaha!
And then when you are slapped with some cruel hard FACTS....you change your argument to comparing Amat with other ORANGE COUNTY parochials.
Do not insult our true intelligence by denying that you were attempting to downplay the quality of Academics at Amat. I hope you have learned your lesson.
To share a bit more info with you, EVERY student that graduates from Amat automatically qualifies for any UC or Cal State university. Taking university prep courses is not a choice at Amat... It is required in order to actually graduate from the high school.
Amat is located in LA PUENTE! RESPECT! ...NOT some rich OC neighborhood. Of course they have a higher percentage of kids going off to universities....MOST OF THOSE KIDS COME FROM PRIVILEGED FAMILIES (Mater Dei, Santa Margarita, Notre Dame, etc.) These schools also cost a hell of a lot more than Amat does as well. And as far as Loyola is concerned, it is a very exclusive and a very expensive school to attend. Rich kids only need apply.
P.S.
The percentage of students from Charter Oak (42%) and Los Altos (29%) that have actually completed their university prep courses is appalling to me. Academics are drowning in southern california. And yes, as the Amat Lady or Gentleman stated below, these numbers do not say how many ACTUALLY got into 4 yr universities.
On the flipside, 100%...yes...100% of all Amat graduates complete their university prep courses. Of these graduates, 66% WERE ACTUALLY ACCEPTED into 4 year universities.
If your sick of hearing about Amat, stop talking smack!

nd as far as my son, He has good grades and has had a great time playing football\track. And as far as the new transfers from Bishop Amat or from anywhere else, be ready to earn a spot. Its not going to be easy. Amat Good Luck!

The worst thing about homophobes is that they desperately wish to come out of the closet themselves.
I don't hate anybody, as you could plainly see by my posts. I just point out to the real haters how they are blinded by their own small-mindedness. The haters, such as you, can't comprehend their own existence for what it is, and have to settle for playing in their own little sandbox, while spewing their venom to all who pass within earshot.
Someday, when you grow up, and acknowledge all that is around you, you will understand. Until then, your life will be full of frustration, and dismay.

As I said.... This info is either on the web or IN THEIR BROCHURES. Reading is fundamental.....It is also available in their counseling handouts, if you care to truly research. Rancho Santa Margarita is still 10+ points higher and Mater Dei is still 20 points higher also, using your numbers. But just for kicks, lets use a 10% margin of error. That would still puts ND, Servite at 85+%. That is still almost 20 points better than Amat to 4 year universities.
Im not playing down Amat, Im merely debating the stance that others have in regards to SGV private schools. By the way, if you can afford to sent you kid to Amat, you can afford to sent your kid to a Cal State, at the least. There is not a huge difference financially. Also, there are student loans, work study programs, etc. if academics are the focus. No disrespect, but anybody with a GED can go straight to a JC. No need to shell out the money, if there's going to be a financial dead end. Save the tuition from an average "college prepatory" high school and invest it for the cost of the more important college education. If you are in it for your kid's education, then it should be all the way. That what college planning is all about, right???

BELIEVER,
Why so bitter little man? Just because your program is going through rebuilding doesn't mean you have to attack everyone else. You know, sometimes even free tuition can't draw them to the religious dark side.
Posted by: Mr. Hate | February 12, 2007 2:42 PM
Lets see Los Altos the Asians bring up the Academic standards and African American and Latino recruits bring up the football program...See how your football program would really run if you had to play with your real student body..you know the ones that live in HH....you guys would have Mark Keppel written all over you in football...Lots of players that should be playing for Wilson are playing at LA right now...
Posted by: BELIEVER | February 12, 2007 2:10 PM
Academian,
Mater Dei only shows how many kids are accepted. (88% not 95%) This does not necessarily mean that all 88% attend a four-year university. Their website shows that 99% attend college…it can be 4year or 2year.
Rancho Santa Margarita shows 95% attend college…they break it down 77% four year 18% 2 year.
Servite only states that 99% are college bound…no breakdown.
Bosco Tech only states that 99% will attend college…no breakdown
Damien, states that they send 96% of their students to colleges and universities…No breakdown
Loyola sends 99% to college…96% to four-year colleges
Norte Dame…states that 99% go to college…again no breakdown…
Perhaps Amat needs to be like Mater Dei, Servite, Bosco, Damien, ND and only show college percentage… Amat shows that 96% attend college…66% 4 year 30% 2 year.
Compared to the other SGV Catholic Schools we are sending the same amount of kids to college. Perhaps you can ask yourself…are all 96% of Amat students “accepted” but do not have the means to attend a four-year university? It is with great sacrifice that some of us send our kids to private school…we do not need parents like you…down playing our school.
The only school you have right on your list is Loyola…all other schools do not give a breakdown.
What percentage does Los Altos send to a four year University…what about Charter Oak?
This is from the CO and Los Altos websites…
Charter Oak: Graduates who completed all courses required for UC/CSU Admission…41.66%.
Los Altos: Graduates with UC/CSU required courses… 29.1%.
These percentages are not even acceptance to college…but just graduated with the required courses…
You need to do some research before you post!
I guess Bluorca and others are right after all.

It is interesting and even amusing to hear people such as Bluorca and others speak of academics at Amat compared to area public schools. For the record, there are area public schools whose academics are at par or better with Amat. Charter Oak is at par academically. Yes, at par. From an academic standpoint alone, Los Altos is one of those schools that is better.
Someone else made a comment regarding the Asian population at Los Altos. That is part of the very reason why the academic standards and success has been so high there. That is a good thing. There is a commitment to and the expectation of academic success that is a major cultural difference between the Asain culture that is the majority at Los Altos and the "other" majority cultures that make up Amat.
In addition, lets compare Amat academically to its private school peers. It leaves quite a bit to be desired, to say the least. Amat faithful boast a 65% graduation rate to 4 year univerities. Their peers, i.e. Mater Dei, Loyola, Servite, ND have graduation rates of 95% plus going to 4 year universities. This is not racial bias, its fact. Go on any of their websites or open a school brochure and the stats are there. Amat is not just getting beat on the field and courts, but in the classroom as well. So, parental irresponsibility from an academic standpoint, I think not. There is nothing lost academically from Amat to Los Altos, CO or some other schools not mentioned here.

How ghetto of us? Gang related deaths are up in SGV? Lower class areas? I see a common theme. Sorry if we don't fit in your idea of a perfect world.
Bluorca, get off your high horse or does the white hood you are wearing keep you from doing that?
Posted by: lower class area resident | February 11, 2007 1:28 PM
You resort to name calling and I'm the one that's classless...How ghetto of you and your thought process.
There is no excuse for what is being done to young Tillis. That last post was an attempt to hide or smooth over what everyone knows is the truth of why he has been to so many schools. It's his father refusing to accept reality and making his son pay the academic price.
Rather than kiss ass, you should stand up and speak out againts parents that put a greater value on some dead end, unrealistic dream rather than the academic needs of their children.
And people wonder why the quality of education and the quality of those educated in southern california is on a decline....
Hey but look on the bright side!
Gang related deaths are on the rise! Especially in the SGV!
If we are ever to change for the better of all humanity especially in lower class areas then that change must start with the PARENTS.
Posted by: bluorca | February 11, 2007 12:39 PM
wow Bluorca that was pretty classless.
"Teamate" comes in and clears the air and details the adversity that the tillis family went through and you make that comment? !
No wonder people are leaving Amat...assholes like you.
He's a kid and his family just made a decision, like many others will in the near future, that Amat just isn't what it USED to be...
Good luck to the Tillis family and sorry for your grief.

john,
You are right , we are restless already. MSGR must go !!! He has let CIF championship coaches go in boys basketball and baseball, they've had changes in a succesful softball program, can't keep volleyball coaches, the girls soccer coach leaves, and even drove Difiori out (who is a better coach than most give him credit for) prior to Difiori leaving MSGR let two promonent assistants go - and most of these coaching losses were alumni. they've all been replaced with coaches with low expectations and aspirations (read low paid).
Funny how the Star News coach of the year (amat alum) interviews and did not get the amat job. Then they drop St Bonnies coach, who would have come if not for ...MSGR ! Would have cost too much and asked for too much freedom to do his thing. MSGR brings in a St Paul cronie (coming off 4 straight last place finishes) to take down the basketball team. Thank goodness there were previous connections to the baseball coach, which looks like a good hire (although there are already grumblings as to his displeasure) We'll see how long before that coach jets too.
We are in deep trouble, and I'm not sure that the road out is very easily traveled.

bluorca,
you hit it right on the head, it is time to do something at Amat. Msgr. Carroll must go!!!!!!!!!!
The alumni are getting restless and when that happens the money does not come in. As for Tillis, with the team that we had last year he should have been put in to see what he could do. Heck, it was not like we were in contention to win CIF or something. I heard this kid has a live arm and is pretty good. What a loss, I do not care what spin the coaches put on it.
MSGR. Carroll must go!!!!!!!!!!

That's cool and all Teamate...
But what family tragedy caused the Tillis family to leave Damien and attend Amat? I mean, a tragedy besides Mark Mendrun.......?
Posted by: bluorca | February 8, 2007 7:47 PM
This Tillis info is all wrong. My kid played with Tillis in pop warner. Im not sying he's the second coming, but this slamming is uncalled for and more importantly, WRONG.
1st, Tillis never quit the team, he nor my son played in that Vegas game because of a racist incident that they both were victims of at school. It was a serious issue that needed immediate attention by my family and his. For anyone to say he quit is irresponsible. DeAnda was the Head Coach and Tillis was OC. Also, Tillis was never replaced in any game. I have video of every game this team played, if anyone cares to dispute this further. I agree we did have a player that ran backwards that year, but it was a younger RB on the squad. As far as the game against Diamond Bar, there was a final drive down the field with Tillis at Qb and the starting RB moving down the field. The younger RB was put in at that point and was stopped, end of story. Yes, this is all ancient history but get the history correct.
As far as the transferring, I do know the family experinced alot of tragedy this past year. Both of his grandparents died, on due to heart failure and the other was killed by a armed robber. My family attended the funerals. In addition his aunt had brain surgery this past year. Obviously, there is emotional and financial strain in such a situation. So please dont speak on matters you truly know nothing about. Many assumptions have been made, I felt it necessary to speak the TRUTH.

Again Cop/Coach,
Your points well taken. From the Amat side reguarding Blake Tillis. Quit in JAA does not surprise me. I do not knock Blake because as a kid you just want to play, but dad is different he believes his kid is phenom QB and will stop at nothing to promote this with nothing to back it up. Somehow Blake is doing what Dad tells him which he has no choice he is raising him. "Ah that coach dont know shit, your quitting son, let see how they do without you"...that kind of attitude I can see if your kid was a complete stud and the coach was a loser....leaving Amat shows his dad misdirected him again into quitting...Financial as some say,,MAYBE but I doubt it....I call it quitting..Now on to LA where they will take the same quitters attitude... and if Blake is not the starting QB the excuses and bitching will start from his parents. Face the facts Tillis let your kid play football and let the coach put him where it fits best and if he does not start dont take it personal..be proud of your son and back him to the fullest and dont knock him at home for not having the makings of a varsity football QB.....By teaching him quitting techniques when he does not get his way is showing him when he does not get that work promotion in life just quit...Sounds like Dad is spoiled not Blake.
Posted by: Believer | February 8, 2007 9:27 AM
Note to realist.
I don't know what happened to Blake Tillis in JAA or at Damien. I do know about him at LaVerne/San Dimas at the Jr. Peewee level.
My son played on the same team with Roland DeAnda as their head coach.
Tillis began the year as the QB. The team went 3-1-3 in regular season. The main reason was the defense led by LB Travis Hofstetter. That unit only gave up 6 TDs the entire season. Three of those came in one game against San Bernardino. The 3 ties were 6-6, 0-0 and 0-0.
Tillis had a hard time moving the ball and was good at scrambling backwards for huge losses. His dad was the QB coach. Coach DeAnda called the plays.
In the playoffs we lost to Diamond Bar. We were down 7-0 the entire game. Tillis was replaced by Jeff Collins (who now plays baseball at Charter Oak) and Collins led the team to a TD. D-Bar returned the kickoff for a TD to win the game.
Tillis quit the team just before the bowl game we were invited to in Las Vegas. We played a December game versus the "best team in Nevada" on their iced-over field. LVSD beat them, with Collins at QB, 27-6. With Tillis it probably would have been 6-6.
Those are the facts. The other poster may have been incorrect about the other stuff, but was right on about LVSD.

"St. Francis was not all that impressive againts LA either. But what they did do was hold LA to 167 yrds in total offense. That is an average of 42 yards gained per quarter of football. That is a defensive shutdown no matter where you hail from."
Interestingly enough, St Francis was held to only 226 yards total offense, about 70 of which happened on the same fluke broken play that was the difference in the game. A lot of "woulda coulda's" for LA this season.
Of course, LA's offense wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire against any other teams during that period, either.
"Los Altos' academic problems and such occurred after the St. Francis game."
LA's academic problems were a false alarm... when grades came out everyone was eligible.
"I doubt LA has 17/22 returning starters but I have not researched this."
More like 8, if you count Seanez as a starter. I think all 8 of them did something on both sides of the ball, though. Add another 6 or so reserves who saw significant action, one kid who would have been eligible and played if he wasn't stuck in Mexico for 3 weeks in the middle of the season, and a guy who started for Amat.
As for Foothill... they'd have beaten Charter Oak. Probably LA too if they played a second time. That team had some athletes.
Posted by: jhykron | February 7, 2007 9:21 PM
I was sincere with my last comments. It's good for the area for people to show their support for their schools. If more people did this, we would not see a mass exodus of quality people/players leave the SGV to go live/play in Orange County.
I'm sorry to say this but Los Altos was indeed at full strength and was missing no key starters when they faced St.Francis. Everyone knew this game was going to be huge because of the bragging rights involved. And they were led by an awesome coach in Gano. Los Altos' academic problems and such occurred after the St. Francis game. At this time of the season, no one was suspended yet. As far as youth of team goes, no other team in the valley had a younger team than BA. I doubt LA has 17/22 returning starters but I have not researched this.
St. Francis was not all that impressive againts LA either. But what they did do was hold LA to 167 yrds in total offense. That is an average of 42 yards gained per quarter of football. That is a defensive shutdown no matter where you hail from.
And we can study St. Francis' season further. Amat did barely beat them but I truly believe that this game was close only because of Amat's injuries to 3 starters. I say this because St. Francis got spanked by Chaminade 40-17 and St. Paul 21-9. In case anyone forgot, BA beat both Chaminade and St. Paul this last season. Can't blame anyone for saying that Los Altos would have lost to Chaminade, St. Paul or anyone else on Amat's schedule including Amat itself.
I did research the Foothill/Santa Margarita game once before and I did post something about this game. The game was really close, but only in score. Statistically, SM dominated Foothill and they were their own worst enemy at that game. Here are some stats from that game....
First Downs SM 20, FH 5 Wow!
Rushing Yrds SM 163, FH 45
Passing Yrds SM 118, FH 52
This was one of those freak of nature games and although I cannot find the article on this game anymore, I'm pretty sure it was played in the rain. It was hardly a game to compare to the Los Altos/Foothill game which was in the playoffs and meant life or death for both schools. And besides, teams "gear up" and prepare for Santa Margarita like it was a CIF championship game. I doubt Foothill got the same respect from SM. But all this aside, both SM and LA dominated FH...But to think that Los Altos would have beat or even be able to hang with Santa Margarita this year is completely unrealistic to say the least.
With all due respect, Santa Mararita would have completely tore into not only Los Altos, but any other team from the SGV including Amat.

Bluorca,
this may be irrelevant now, or just plain "old news", but I'll respond anyhow. Twelve-hour days suck. My apologies for the very late response.
First off, I don't know how sincere you were in commending my loyalty to the white and red LA, but thank you for your recognition. I also commend you for the blue and gold life that runs through your veins. Such loyalty and support is unbriddled, and admirable, especially during a period of questions. As an avid supporter of SGV football, it is rough even on my self red, white, and blue and all to see the mighty golden A struggle. The possibility of oblivion is NOT what I want personally. I don't hate Amat. I respect Amat. The program, the competition, the prestige. My problem lies with the many of it's supporters. The same reason that I could never be a Raider fan. Not the program, but the people. The very two reasons why I want Amat.(1) To see the looks on your faces, when we play you close, or beat you. (2)To win the SGV title. Only two programs have a right to that title based on prestige and history. This game NEEDS to be played. Annually.
You guys always bring up your(Amat)youth, and injuries, and that D@MN St.Francis game. 1. LA was missing players as well. Key players. 2. LA wasn't all that mature, there is a load of Defense returning this fall. 3. Grading on a curve to LA standards, this was a "B" team. This was a good Los Altos team, not a very good, or great Los Altos team. 3. Once and for all, the famous Los Altos Conqueror meltdown happened following the D-A-M-I-E-N game, not after St.Francis. That was a very sloppy "C-" GRADE game(vs. St.Francis). I know all you parochial people like to say and/or believe that it was AFTER Saint Francis, but it wasn't. It was after L.A.'s total Defensive domination of the Spartans that the Conq's had a virtual meltdown. There were some issues in the classroom, and in the maze of metal that caused that, and to the gentleman who called out LA's depth, give yourself a gold star, yes LA's big studs were a little beat up. Depth was an issue when it came to bigger, better opponents. Trust me when I say that it won't be this season, and from the looks of it the next three seasons atleast.
Blu, we can play your schedule. How would have handled Damien this last season? Santa Margarita 7, Foothill 6; LA put Foothill away before the half. I know you'll some "buts" to add, facts are facts. LA beat Damien more convincingly than St.John Bosco.
Trust me, I know LA needs to play some bigger boys, I am growing frustrated. Problem is I don't know who to be frustrated at. Though it seems that psychologically Gano and DeSpain maybe on the same page as far as reasoning for what I call a compromise in schedule. I say schedule the best, you'll recruit the best, they SEEM seem to feel that an asthetically pleasing record will recruit. It infuriated me last winter/spring when I opened up the Tribune and read that West Covina was scheduled to play Mater Dei, and LA scheduled Rosemead . . . . Rosemead?! What?! Are you sh**ting me?! West Covina vs Mater Dei?! WHAT?!? Bassett to Hawai'i my f**kin' g**!! That was my response the whole spring/summer. And of course Gano constituted a game with Rosemead in the paper. Some crap like going 10-0 in the regular season or some crap like that. So what, Duarte went to the Semi-finals in their crappy division, that doesn't I want to play them. I want LB Poly, I want Mater Dei, I want BISHOP AMAT.

It's HATE. You can say it. It's easy, give it a try. You should be very familiar with me, because I'm all around you.
I have no preference for any one team. I just enjoy viewing the pathetic goings on of all of you sad, miserable parents, fans, and others who have no lives worth mentioning. It's too bad all you losers keep forgetting it's supposed to be about the youth.
But, that's okay. You just keep poisoning your children with your HATE, and dogmatism, and I'll be here with welcome arms to take them in when they reach adulthood......Just like I did with you...

Mister H,
Cheaters always come up empty in all areas of life....Los Altos will come up empty and will fall hard this year..Worse this year than last year. It is called Karma and the worst is coming to get that LA team this year....No playoffs and egg all over that whole coaching staffs face. You cheat at cards you get shot..you cheat on a test you get a fail..you cheat on your girlfriend you get dumped...you cheat by recruiting you lose by injuries and overall bad luck with Refs and grades.....stick that devils fork in that LA team they are done before they even start..........AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....BARK AT THE MOON!

I "Got Real" With Amat Admissions
For the year 2006-2007, 605 students applied to become Lancers as Freshman. 430 of these prospects were accepted into the Freshman class. This means 175 students were unfortunately rejected. Yes, it is true that this number used to be higher (around 250-350 rejections). But the numbers have not fallen to the point were one would consider the Entrance Exam more of a Placement Test. No one has to take my word for it...ask the 175 rejected applicants.
Despite the lowered numbers, which is being witnessed at all Parochials, it's still difficult to get into Amat. You must have a good junior high gpa, have 2 letters of recommendation (faculty + pastor), and then you have to do well on the entrance exam.
the end.

We need a QB and RB for next year. If Wells replaces McBride then were going to need a WR. Speaking of D1 caliber players, several Amat players did real well at the Nike Combine according the site. James Mead made the All Combine Team and Dominique Austin was featured in a article & video as a up & coming Defensive Lineman in the area. Congrats to both players.
Posted by: jrod | February 5, 2007 3:28 PM
That is what Amat needs. What they have right now is Tamayo 5'7"...not going to get it done...good player tho just does not have the height....I am hoping the rumor is correct we need a good solid QB......altho I hear our freshman from last year was good and our sophmore is not bad...
Posted by: MATMTWTBAG | February 5, 2007 2:13 PM
Did Amat get any transfers ? Rumor has it a QB is transfering in ????
Posted by: caballero | February 5, 2007 11:46 AM
Realist 24,
No one ever told Bryce he was too small for RB..he started most of our games last season>?..he was penciled in to start again and we were looking for big things from him but he chose to jump ship and play down....and that's ok Bryce is good hard working individual and that was his choice. Keeping Wells in the 4th quarter well what game?..and if it is the one I am thinking about well if you know Dorian, he is a player and wants to be out there reguardless of the score..same with Fletcher...these young men want to be out on that field win or lose..as far as Castaneda he was small and Amat had Robles, altho Cataneda could have been his back up and got the opportunity to start this past year but his parents wanted him to QB now..ala Tillis.....but Castaneda was never knocked for his talent to throw the ball but because of height...he has a great arm...proved it for the years he played at LA....
Posted by: MATMTWTBAG | February 5, 2007 9:37 AM
Realist 24 or any other Tillis backers...How is it that if they are from the La Verne area where he went to Damien and then transfered to Amat and now at Los Altos (public school)...can he even go to Los Altos unless it was financial and they moved to Hacienda Heights...sounds like recruiting to me.....His dad knew he would not break the Amat starting lineup this coming season at QB...and thats where they want him in that glorified position ..nothing less...JJA numbers do not count here....tell me what has he done in his HS playing days up to this point..thats right, NADA!...his parents have wasted their time and their kids time bouncing him everywhere just looking for a opening for him to start at QB. Well from what I hear Walnut needs a QB and so does Workman and Bassett so if it is about getting the lead role to his parents why dont they take him there...There are lots of kids on the Amat team who will be seniors this year and will not start , just like last year...but they play in the program and graduate with that education and you hear no bitching from their parents..If your kid is good enough he will play and be noticed..if he is not good enough he will sit and be part of the program and accept the fact that he is not as good....but parents who move their kids because of this ,are flat out playing with their kids future...3 schools in 3 years thats sounds like a personal problem to me.....the coaches are always to blame but I dont think that is the case with Tillis. Papa Tillis stop living in your kids HS years....let him be who he is and stop making him believe he is some Hot Shot HS QB, which he even knows he's not....The Kid knows deep down inside the other kids are better but he is afraid he will dissapoint Dad so he continues to try...Dad give your kid a break man, he does not cut it at this level.....Nor does he need the stress....Should have kept him at Damien and let him ride the program out....Damien Like Amat is a good School for studying...Football comes second unless you have a stud bluechipper...and trust me you will know when you have one.....in this case that was determined long ago....Denial is a huge when it comes to some parents....Sad is it not?
Posted by: Believer | February 5, 2007 9:19 AM
I happen to know the Tillis family and to those who think his parents are trying to live through him are mistaken. His parents have always enforced academics come first . the Truth Sometimes hurts why couldnt it have been for financial reasons how would you know? Do you look at their bills month.
Posted by: realist 24 | February 4, 2007 10:08 PM
Bluorca,
I will agree with you on one issue. Leaving Amat for Los Al has got to be one of the most moronic decisions a parent can make. Unless their is a financial reason for the move, to do so solely for athletics is ridiculous. In Tillis' case, I do not think it was for financial reasons. If I'm not mistaken, did'nt he attend Damien as a freshman? Third school in four years, all in the name of athletics.
As far as the Amat admissions process, get real. Very few are turned away. The test given at Amat, which is the same one administered at almost all Catholic schools today, is more of a placement test than an admissions test. Maybe many years ago things were different, but not as of the last 5 or so years. Don't believe, call the admissions office and inquire as to how many prospective incoming freshman took the test. Then in September call back. You will be suprised.

Before anyone kills me,
The reason why my last post was so scathing is because there are literally hundreds and hundreds of applicants that get turned away from Bishop Amat each and every year. I had many a friend that did not make it in and many of them cried when they received their letters of denial.
To actually get into Amat is a great accomplishment in itself and to give that up is stupid. Perhaps I would feel differently if Tillis was indeed a special FB player with obvious skills who was being actively scouted and headed toward a D-1 school on sholarship. But with Tillis, this is not the case and nothing will change this matter no matter where he plays. What his parents did was irresponsible. I'm done with this issue.
Posted by: bluorca | February 4, 2007 6:45 PM
Caballero
Good point that you brought up. The reason why he has been to so many schools is because his parents refuse to accept anything less than him being a starter. They as a family were a handful at Amat and its unfortunate that his parents are living vicariously though him. They need to just let their son be the best player he can be...even if that means riding the bench.
I'll tell you one thing though, anyone that would pull their kid out of one of the top academic schools in southern cali has got to be a freakin moron. It's like they expect young Tillis to disregard his academics because they are so sure that HE WAS MEANT TO PLAY IN THE NFL!.
Strong Academics is one of the most important things in life and to give that up for a father's dream of retiring on his son's NFL paycheck is completely ludicrous.
Some parents need to wake the hell up, try for 5 mins to shake off their GHETTO handcuffs and do what is best for their children regardless if their children accomplish their parents goals or not.
Young Tillis getting a college football scholarship and then joining the NFL is completely unrealistic and even laughable. But I know thats what his parents think and it's a sad thing.
Your parents made a mistake pulling you out of Amat Young Tillis because you would not start. It shows that they care about their own dreams more than your academic future. And though you may laugh now at any sentance with the word "academic" in it...One day you will see and understand what I'm talking about today. Until then...I wish you all the luck in the world.
Godspeed!

bad luck with coaching and he has played this year a little bit. I am not saying he is just the best player i am just saying be fair give the kid a chance or if you talk about him know your facts.
Posted by: realist 24 | February 4, 2007 3:35 PM
if Tillis was/is so great, why has he not broken into anyones lineup ? 3 schools in 3 years ? just a thought ?????
Posted by: caballero | February 4, 2007 3:15 PM
Tillis?,
You need to get your facts right lol it is so funny how you are making an ass of yourself because you do not know what you are talking about. His dad was never the qb coach stupid lol. He was the offensive corinator. If he sucked so bad at junior all american why did they only lose 2 games hu? The year before that they won 8 the year after he let they won 3 so I dont think he left because it was to hard. Another thing Stupid his dad once again was not the qb coach at La Verne/ San Dimas he was the offensive cordinator. He did not lose his spot that was probably the year he left and played at JAA. Mater of fact that year he played at JAA i think he started over Andrew Carian who is or was the qb for Co right? At Damian again you are wrong he played he played on sat at runnungback. He had more passing and rushing yards that the starting Qb. So please when you speak again have your facts right thank you.
Posted by: realist 24 | February 4, 2007 2:29 PM
Believer,
If the coaches are right, then why did they tell castinada that he was to small and the only way he could play it would be at Db. If he would have listened to the coaches no one would have know how talented he was. They were WRONG, they said Mcbride was to small to be effective at rb they were wrong. How can you judge a player based on his size. Have you ever scene him in a game NO he may surprise you. How ever i have scene this kid play. I am not saying he will be the best in the state. You are making it sound like he is worthless and, if the coaches are not blind but they can be stupid. For instance leavind Dorian Wells in the forth quarter when amat was well behind no chance of comming back that was STUPID. So iI guess you are partley right they are not blind just STUPID.
Posted by: realist 24 | February 4, 2007 2:03 PM
Realist 24,
Thats my point with Tillis you have not seen him in a game...Why is that ...well coaches are not blind and they are coaches so they know what is the best to put on the field that gives your team a opportunity to win...........Tillis is not that...much less he is not a Qb...Great to dream and want but you have to perform. Yes Castaneda went from Amat to LA and for his size held his own at 5'6...He had talent...unlike Tillis...Convert Tillis to a DB thats is where I believe he fits best. I do question weather he can stick someone or not..... QB / WR / RB / LB...HE CANNOT PLAY THOSE POSITIONS!.....Trust me here you recruited a Lemon...Then his dad will bitch because he gets no playing time..all parents want and think their kid is the best...but this is HS football not Little League...The Tillis father and son combo needs to face the facts...it is not there..coaches are not all wrong.

Credo,
What has Servite done?..your days are numbered. this past season was suppose to be your year with Gallipo etc...did not happen so here you come on here banging on Amat. The OC does produce good teams as in Orange Lutheran and Mater Dei but there are teams from up North SFV that are also monsters. Canyon Country plus a little further Oaks Christian..Oaks C or CC would have beaten Orange Lutheran. Amat is the team that comes out of SGV and yes the tide has turned and is not in our favor right now but we are a Farm and we will be there again. Count on it...Also the Inland San Benadino teams are also big time coming around so dont bag pipe too much OC noise here that area is not cream of the crop by no means.

And speaking of getting your facts straight, their are reports on Roger Murray's blog that Diamond Ranch running Back Aubrey Haynes and Rosemead running Tra Sumler have transferred over to St. Paul.
In the case of Haynes, a first-team All-CIF selection, this would be a big loss to the team. Terrific player and hard runner.
Confirmation of this would be appreciated.

"All pride aside, they would not be able to. But you will disagree along with any other die hard Los Altos fan and I blame this on ignorance. Few in the SGV save Glendora, South Hills, and Chino Hills have witnessed the firepower of a true Pac-5 football farm. Unfortunately, the results have been routs of these SGV schools."
Well, let's get the story straight once and for all that your mind can be set straight. In 2005, South Hills opened it's season against Esperanza (who ended up losing the D-1 championship to Loyola by a three point) and the final score of the game was 30-27. Anyone who was at the game will tell you that SH more than held it's own against the Aztecs. And Esperanza was so fired up about the prospects of playing SH again, they refused to renew the contracts after that season.
So if 30-27 is a rout, then maybe your definition of football is a little different than everyone else on this blog.
So please get your facts straight!!!! I can't stand it when bloggers start posting stuff without the the proper facts to back it up!!!

The Anti Amat
Posted by: The Anti Amat | February 3, 2007 9:35 AM
Jeremy & Co.
Everything that you are stating is nothing new to me nor anyone that follows FB in the SGV. Your passion for Los Altos football is to be commended. If only more people shared the same passion as you do, Los Altos home games would not look like an Amat JV game. I mean really man...no one goes to Los Altos games dude. Even during a so-called "big" game, Los Altos has trouble packing their own stands. It's sad really. Los Altos does indeed have a great football history but it like the history that never was.
The people that represent Bishop Amat do indeed flash their Pac-5 badges. And they do it for a good reason...That reason being that Amat has competed in the "pac5" or the highest level of high school football in the Southern Section for as long as its existence. Amat pride comes not from the number of championships its won but rather the struggle againt enormous odds year after year.
The whole Los Altos vs. Amat thing has existed for over 20 years people and the debate has never ended nor will it. That's part of SGV football and it's always been this way. The debate about who is afraid of playing who and what program is better than whose is nothing new at all. So all we have is the facts and good ol stats...
The facts are that NO ONE can remember the last time Los Altos scheduled a DIV 1-2 football farm. Los Altos will never be taken seriously nor will anyone remember her history outside of the SGV because Los Altos plays NO ONE.
You cannot blame people for saying that Los Altos would be 1-6 with Amat's schedule because Los Altos has never scheduled anything even remotely as competitive as Amat's schedule. And we do not even have to go this far. We can look back as recent as the St. Francis game.....
ANYONE REMEMBER THE ST. FRANCIS GAME?
Allow me to refresh your memory of the situation....
A healthy and mature Los Altos team got completely shut down by the St. Francis Defense. Yes, the score was close but anyone that went or knows about that game will tell you that Los Altos got rocked and could not do anything againts that St. Francis defense. This was a huge game for Los Altos. The atmosphere was one of a CIF championship game...minus a few thousand fans. Los Altos did everything in their power to prepare for this game and the result was a complete shutdown of the Los Altos Offense.
Now lets talk about the school you hate. Big Bad Annoying Bishop Amat. A school that is breaking a new and inexperienced head coach. It's also the school that started 9 Lowerclassmen on defense and a crap load of other lowerclassmen in other areas. Amat is going to have 17 returning starters next season so that pretty much sums up the youth of the team this year. And its gets worse from here! When Amat played St. Francis, Amat was missing their #1 RB/DB in Gaisie, a starting offensive lineman, and a starting linebacker. This would be the equivalent of Damien missing Mark Mendrun or Los Altos missing Ira Thomas and then some.
How can you blame people for saying that Amat would have rocked Los Altos' socks when this inexperienced, young, and injured as hell Amat team BEAT BEAT BEAT St. Francis. And trust me, St. Francis was prepared. St. Francis and Amat used to butt heads a lot and there is a great respect held between the two schools.
You can bet ur ass or anyone elses you would care to wager but Los Altos did not and does not have the capability to do any better againts any of Amat's opponents this last year. If Los Altos got their tail rocked by St. Francis....How in the world would they have done againts the likes of Hart, Valencia, Carson, etc.
All pride aside, they would not be able to. But you will disagree along with any other die hard Los Altos fan and I blame this on ignorance. Few in the SGV save Glendora, South Hills, and Chino Hills have witnessed the firepower of a true Pac-5 football farm. Unfortunately, the results have been routs of these SGV schools. Los Altos would fair no differently. But don't take my word for it....ask any Glendora fan about Redlands. Redlands was the red-headed beaten stepchild of DIV 1/PAC 5 and they as a school chose to be demoted to the Inland Division. Please ask anyone from Glendora what they witness at the Redlands game and they will tell you about the phantom "level" that we at Amat like to talk about.
Someone once wrote on here that Gano had said that he would not schedule Amat because Amat plays and hits harder than any other school in the SGV. But this person was mistaken. It was not Gano that said this....it was was DeSpain that made this comment that is well remembered by myself and anyone else that has followed football here in the SGV. Was DeSpain correct in this matter?
I don't know. I'm no expert. Given the facts above you can draw your own conclusions. Could Los Altos have beaten Amat this year? My answer is yes. But if you really look at what was team Amat this year, beating this Amat team would be nothing to write about in any newspaper outside of the SGV. Nor is it anything to brag about either. The fact that Amat has 17, 17, 17 returning starters says it all.
So if anyone else wants to fantasize about their team beating this years Amat's team...go ahead. I think it's great for school spirit and such.
But to make any claims that Los Altos would have done better againts any Amat opponents this year or Amat itself is just plain unrealistic. Until Los Altos schedules anyone tougher than St. Francis, Conqueror fans will continue to have no right to make any claims againts any top football program. And I'm not talking about any BS, Punani filled Passing League Tournament or any BS, Punani scrimmage....I'm talking about Friday Night Lights.
Until this happens, no one will care nor attend any Los Altos games. You cannot swim in the big boys pool if you refuse to fight those same big boys that are keeping you out of the water...
The SGV has only one front when she's at war with the top programs in Orange County or any other region.
That front bears armor, a noble steed, and a deadly Lance.
Mighty Are The Men That Wear Blue And Gold.

The problem is not with the starters at LA being able to play possibly with the like of Amat year in and year out, the problem comes in the form of depth..any body with an ounce of football knowledge understands the best teams always have depth...If LA or SH or any valley team played the schedule BA plays, well you ass would be in a sling. Its True.
A couple of years back when LA had (older)Drayton, Brown and those guys they throw(passing league) against LB Poly in the summer...It did not take long for the LB Poly Kids to get bored, these kids from poly made Drayton and co. at LA look slow.
WOW....maybe you parents should really take a look in the mirror and realize that you are dominant against a watered down valley and water downed division...
To close..SH who have you beat in CIF..San Gabriel, Orange..world beaters?

Allright Jeremy,
After rereading you take I will man up and say I mis read that what it said to me at first blush was Amat has week 0 open.... well theres Norco , Poly and Corona....meaning we should face them in week 0 that we are not playing the best....My bad .......but like I said we face top teams and we play hard. there are times where we are in these games and win and there are times we get our Asses kicked all over the place. As a Amat Booster // Alum. we want to play the best win or lose. As far as your program you have a storied past and have had success but I like to see you play those top notch teams sort of like the way D'Ranch did and see how you fair against them...Play Amat we want that as well. at your home or ours who cares. It would help both programs as to where they stand....I am looking for Amat to have a breakout season and it does not help matters that we lost Byrce to you guys but hey thats life... we move on and put someone else back there. no hard feelings Bro.

Believer,
Hey man, did I offend you, or something? All I've said was that L.A. needs to play those teams. Yes, they need to step up the schedule, because they are MORE than capable of playing that type of schedule. I said nothing offensive.
YOU on the other hand my friend, displayed to me, and all other valley football fans once again, specifically why Amat isn't gathering much sympathy from the SGV. To say that LA would go 1-6 with that schedule, or any other valley power is arrogant and ridiculous. Once again you flashed your little Pac-5(D-1) badge like a proud little boy scout. If and when CIF "relegates" you guys, please request the Southwest Division, the Miramonte League will be glad to take you in. The likes of Tustin, Mayfair will be waiting as well. Maybe we'll meet half way in the Sierra League at the good ol' Inland Division.

Norco, Poly ,Corona Centennial....we duck no one we would play them we are D1...remember we scheduled Hart, Carson, Chaminade, Valencia, St. Francis and Rancho Cucamonga plus St. Paul. all good programs. Have LA play that as a non league schedule. we went 4-3 with that schedule. You guys maybe 1-6...LA is the one that needs to be tested in non league....Man up or shut up.
Posted by: believer | February 1, 2007 3:06 PM
Be careful of what you ask for..SOND is a soild program and returns their starting QB Crist and their starting tailback Thaddeus Brown. They will win the Serra again barring no major injuries or set backs. Amat Crespi and Loyola will have to battle for the number 2 spot. SH hats off to your program for having the stones unlike LA.

What do you mean "down"? Should the SGV be thanking it's lucky stars that the likes of S.O. Notre Dame would bless us with thier presence?
Los Altos has week 2 available, so does Valencia. Come on L.A. here is your chance. Schedule Valencia, PLEASE. . . . JSerra does as well, but that would be a consolation prize.

Well, it's not at the point of many of you want to see...BA vs. LA, but if you come to DIstrict Field on August 31, you will see Sherman Oaks Notre Dame scrimmage South Hills HS at all three levels frosh, JV and (most importantly) varisty.
We see it time and again that the Huskies are not afraid to lay hat against some of the most elite teams in So. Cal. Credit SOND head coach Kevin Rooney on bringing a class program down to play in the SGV.
