Knight-time in the MVL ...

Arroyo lost to league favorite Mountain View, but bounced back by downing South El Monte.

Friday night thoughts

Damien over Diamond Bar: My boy Big Reg from Time Warner asked me earlier this week what I thought of Damien's Griffin Ramme. I told him I hadn't seen him yet, but I did on Friday. What a gritty player. He doesn't very athletic, or like a scorer, but this kid gets his. Damien impressed me last night. I hadn't seen Sparty yet this season, but they're everything I heard - very solid defensiveley and balanced on offense.

Covina girls over San Dimas: It doesn't appear that the Colts will lose in VVL play this season. Covina star Blaire Egardo didn't do much last night, but the rest of the team was there to pick her up and play great defense. It's real simple for San Dimas - No Trotter, No Dice.

Glendora loses again: The Tartans were waxed by Ayala. Things are getting worse. I don't think this team will rally like last year's did. Glendora better come with the game of a its life on Wednesday against Damien. Although the Tartans are struggling, that's still the game of the week. Should be a great environment.

La Puente: Can anyone in the Montview stop the Warriors? Doesn't look like it. It's real simple, if you're taller, you're better. At least that's what LP is telling the rest of the league.

Comments

GTO, here's the problem. Alot of teams are outscoring Glendora. (That's not meant as a joke) That's the truth. Before Glendora would kill you with 3 pointers at the worst time. Then they would press and scatter a team into "mirroring them" and shooting 3 pointers as well (Bad choice!)With Glendora's always solid rebounding that meant long rebounds and fast breaks..with the knife being the 3 pointer "OFF" the fastbreak! Booyah!

That's how Glendora beat people. The system was executed come hell or high water. This year Glendora and Ayala have lost their last "big guns". Need proof. This is Damien's least talented team in four years and they're dominating the Sierra league. Don't get me wrong Damien is cohesive, hard working and confident but skilled, quality ballers they are not. They win because of two factors. Heart and individual hard work. Their bench isn't strong or deep but Damien starters are incredible individuals and Griffin, Riley, Hacker and McClendon are great kids who believed in themselves more than listening to the critics who questioned their toughness (read HEART). I've heard the doubters of these players for years and enjoy seeing all of them play B.I.G.!!!Austin well he's just bigger than everyone else in the league and has the sweetest shot since Sweet Lou Hudson (look it up)

Still believe Damien will win league and go undefeated in the second half, as long as Griffin holds up, and the down cycle continues. The real test will be in the playoffs where the "bench" comes into play and the refs "control" the game.

Griffin reminds me alot of Mendrun. He makes great plays off broken plays, is a great kid and is putting the team on his shoulders and leading the way for the Spartans. Both have the coolest Dad's and "get" what high school sports is all about....the moment.

But I believe you GTO,Glendora will be back. LeDuc is too good a coach to allow this to go on much longer. Sat behind the Glendora bench against Damien and Le Duc is a great high school coach in every sense of the word: composure, attention to detail and class. Hope Dunn was taking notes. Let's see how Dunn handles success. Best to both.

downcycle,

Yes, we do have some trouble handling the ball against very good pressure (which Damien gave us). As for the next 4 years... I think the JV & Frosh got thumped by Glendora, didn't they? Let's see if the Tartans can start something tonight against DB.

Patrick,

I missed the Chino game, that one shouldn't be used to measure DB's progress. Big game tonight, we've got to beat the same three teams again in the second go around. Looks like the big dog fight in the Sierra league will be for 3rd place. Damien and Chino Hills have established themselves as the upper tier.

I hope our guys stay focused on Glendora tonight, and don't get caught looking ahead to Diamond Ranch tomorrow. I can't make either game. Let us know how they turn out!

GTO...like I said Damien should go undefeated in the second go around, Glendora is done, and Griffin and Riley are awesome!

My analysis of Glendora is:

1) No one can dribble! Rebound, play defense and shoot YES! DRIBBLING AWFUL...NO!
2) Le Duc is an awesome coach but knows he doesn't have the horses this year.
3) Losing to Damien in a blowout means the best players from Glendora will be at Damien for the next few years.
4) Glendora has the prettiest girls of ANY Sierra League school! HANDS DOWN!!!
5) IGNORE #3 ! LOL
6) Did I mention the pretttiest girls!
7)ditto
8)ditto
9)ditto
10)ditto

@ Randy,

I dunno , that performance against Chino was not encouraging, eventhough i was not at the game...i saw the score...(TERRIBLE) I think perhaps we just are not up for the challenge or atleast it seems, but one more loss and we can forget about the championship because i dont see Damien or Chino Hills getting upset by any of the others ...so at this point, just making the playoffs sounds like the better thing to hope for.

Talk about special players and their stories...

Something that seems amazing to me....there's an outside chance that Cory Harkey of Chino Hills High will be All-Sierra first team in the three MAJOR sports in the same year! Historians please let me know when that last happened. Cory's biggest challenge will be baseball. But he is a very special kid, humble and with grest respect for everyone.

He'll need to follow up an excellent game against Ayala last night, with an even better performance to knock off Damien tomorrow. It should be real fight. The most important Sierra League basketball game of the year. See you there.

Hey Aram,

Not that it matters much (except that I hold out hope that my Tartans will not drop below .500), but you are missing one of Glendora's wins...they have 11, not 10. Good game Damien, you outplayed us. We have issues and were not overcoming them; not stepping up like we should, but give Damien credit for forcing us out of our offense and exposing some weaknesses on D.

they're 2-2 in league pat, they've got room to improve, if they thump Chino...just beat the same 3 chumps the second go around and we should be in the playoffs,....Cameron is doing a good job, fer sure!....hang tight...

Well as for my Brahmas, they now find themselves in a tight position to remain in contention for the title. It's POSSIBLE, but going to take some help from the other teams. However, im definetly surprised at how far the Coach Cameron has been able to take them in such a short tenure with the team. Next yr should promise to be interesting!

i think that lp will go down to workman next time they play eachother. workman was playing without both their "big men" Julian Marques(6'5) and Antonio Tomatani(6'3). you see workmans got size too. workman lost by 12 and they only shot 22% in the entire game. if they shoot even at 40% they would've beat lp. i also think that gladestone would beat them next time around.

he goes to workman

some guy from arroyo the best guard in the valley??? ha well i guess u havent seen danny uribe probably the best point guard in the valley a TRUE POINT GUARD im not talking scoring points

nobody set up like he does takes control like he does and lead a team like he does. If anybody for that fact gets a chance you should check him out. dude is for real

Please do not post comments using my name. They will summarily be deleted.

ur worst knightmare.....let's not go overboard. Yes, Arroyo has gotten much better this year. But to say you have the best coaches in the league is just a slap in the face to Coach Averill. Coach Averill has been in the league for over 15 years and has produce many championships without a whole lot of talent. What, this coach is in his 1st year and already he's the best. Give me a break. Mountain View did beat you guys or was I watching a another game. Coach Averill hands down the best coach in the MVL.

so how about those lady colts basketball? probably ranked first or second in the valley depending where amat ranks

Aram, what can you say? I said Damien would go undefeated in Sierra league play and without the last minute mistakes against Chino Hills that would have been right. (2 offensive rebounds off free throws to win the game in the last minute)

Damien's Griffin is a great story. Self made shooter, leader and basketball player. Dad donated basketball "hoodies" to all Damien basketball players last year.( Very cool!) You'll hear him shout "All right, GRIFF!" everytime his son makes a great play. Super individual. Great family. Everything Griff gets he deserves because he earned it and never gave up even when others doubted his ability. Great to see him come into his own. Couldn't be happier.

Tiger and Griff should put on quite a show come Wednesday. Two very good streak shooters. It should "rain" 3s that night! Best of luck to two classy individuals.

Mr. Workman,

I never said LP would go undefeated, but they are still in first place with the head-to-head decider over Workman. You have got to give the Warriors credit. I think they still win the league, but maybe I'll be wrong. Should be interesting when Azusa goes to LP next month.

Jeremy Morita is the Athlete of the week! GO KNIGHTS GO!

The kid from arroyo, jeremy Morita, is the best point guard i've seen in the valley in a long long time.....he would start for any team in the valley easily, will defin. not get the reconigtion he deserves but the dam kid can play....unstoppable last night.....can u say all valley first team?

Jeremy Morita is maybe the best basketball player to ever play at ARROYO and this year's team is absolutely the best basketball team ARROYO has produced since 1998, when the KNIGHTS last won a Boys Basketball MVL Title.
What turned it around? The coaching...
The ARROYO Athletic Director and Principal are both to thank for hiring the best coaches in the MVL.. If Morita keeps it up, ARROYO should consider retiring his jersey number. He's having an amazing senior year... ATTENTION ALL ARROYO FANS: If you havent seen the boys team yet this year, your missing out! 1/24 vs El Monte, 1/26 at Gabby, 1/31 showdown vs rosemead at AHS! 2/2 at MV, 2/7 at south, 2/9 at EM.
All of a sudden, ARROYO isnt just a Football school, but a Basketball AND Wrestling school too! I should investigate when the last time they took all three in the same year..I wonder when the last time a KNIGHT scored 30 points in a single game?
Thanks for the spotlight, Trib. GO KNIGHTS GO!

Aram,

The only reason why Arroyo lost to Mountain View last Wednesday is because they didn't have Jeremy Morita. It's simple, he plays, they win. This kid is the real deal. I think Arroyo is clearly the best team in this league. Please stop calling Mountain View the league favorite. South El Monte will beat them next Wednesday.

Keep talking ur smack now but will see at the end whos the Montview Champion. For information check the ur facts cuz LP got spanked by Azusa, so that does make them beatable.come up with a better article.
