well i got trained by the guy for three years and he's the reason that the whole program changed.. hes the best coach in the area our principle is nothing but a b**** because she doesn't want to look bad in front of the other principles she always treated the football team bad and had no respect for s. we're gonna do everything possible to bring him back because we have the best athletes coming back next year and you know that! so i am promising everyone that south will go undefeated next season!

To the blogger who went to private school I guess I failed writing class I also went to private school guess it did not help. You are very fortunate to have gone to private school but just to let you no there is more BS going on in private then public I think you no what I mean. So don't act like a snob this is just a blog session not an essay test so how much do you really no about what is going on at South El Monte High School?? or the District for that matter. I am glad Mrs. Montero has you as her voice are you a relative?
I would like you to name some positive things about Mrs. Montero I think this will clear the air maybe people will think twice is there anything???? You should come down and check out the situation and then you will have something to blog about besides telling everyone there dumb! Like you said Mrs. Montero she get's paid that's all she does is get a paycheck. I suggest you come down to the South side of town instead of being on the other side popping off! For all those haters like; scout, movin'on EM staff which are all probably the same person, get your facts before you go on the web posting. First of all Jerry wasn't recruting those players from EM. Those players were invited by someone well known in El Monte to get training at Jerry Speed camp. Yes, Joel or his staff were upset and probably jump into conclusing assuming that Jerry was trying to recruit them. People follow Jerry unlike other coaches.

To all the haters out there that make comments about why this is such a big deal, he's just an assistant coach (walk-on) and all the other crap, please read what Mares and the other people who's (parents and players alike) life has been touch by Coach Urias, this guy has done an outstanding job with these kids and that's why it's a bid DEAL, why parents are pissed-off and why this has hit home with the entire community and all of El Monte is talking about it.
This is not your typical coaching situation, Eric Escamilla is the head coach but everyone knows that Urias was running the show. Everyone who has been to a practice, passing league game, or regular game knows what I am talking about. Martin Mares is not alone, I know of a few other kids that Urias helped in everyway possible to get into schools, both D-I and D-II schools. Even kids now playing on the Jr. All American level that he has helped including my two kids. He takes time to help the kids, teach them and guide them in the right direction, sounds like a horrible guy don't you think. Let's take this for what it is, South El Monte's players have suffered a huge loss, and in some cases their only mentor. It's not every-day your going to get an ARROYO KNIGHT worry about the South El Monte program, but I truly feel for the kids.

In other words you have NO first hand knowledge of the situation. You do not KNOW coach Urias personally. Is this how you come to a conclusion? Though another person thoughts or experiences. This doesn't sound like an educated man. You do have your degree right? Because unless you know him how can you just write what you hear. I heard, your a bald, gay, pervert, who made sexual advances at some of your player. Does that make it fact? Get the point.

ConcernedParent, Urias was not a volunteer. He was a walk-on coach that got hired by the district to coach at SEM. Volunteer means that he worked for free, coaches don't get paid much but he did get paid. And Montero doesn't need a case to fire Urias. He is a walk-on coach and can be let go at anytime. There is no Union for Walk-on football coaches. I am sure she notified the district before coming to her decision. Now if Jerry got his degree from Temple and was teaching at SEM, Montero could still force him to step down from coaching but he couldn't be fired. Principals run each school and the EMUHSD generally supports them 100%. Walk-on coaches have almost zero clout within the district when it comes to job security. Which is too bad because at several EMUHSD schools the majority of their coaches are walk-on's. As for hiring coaches? You have to have teaching jobs available to hire on-campus coaches. With the district closing classes because enrollment is down they aren't going to be in a big hurry to hire a lot of new teachers. If you are worried about SEM getting coaches don't. All this just happened in the last couple of weeks and by May I am sure they'll have all their new coaches ready to go.

Be real. They are not going to keep a walk on assistant coach and fire a principal. It may be unfair or wrong, but it isn't going to happen, period. You can rip on Montero all you want but she is a college educated professional (with a degree), in charge of 1,200 kids and probably makes over $100,000 a year. I'm sure we'd wish all of our kids turned out that bad.

As for Urias, the guy is a good coach & he does care about his players but I have been told: He held several illegal practices & got caught by his own administration. 2 players from EMHS were recruited by and driven too Urias' speed camp by assistant coaches at SEM. He refused to shake hands with EM coaches & made an unsportsmanlike comment to the AD from Rosemead. Urias said (in Aram's article) that he was getting attacked by EM coaches on some message boards, but he challenged EM coaches to fight and called them names on the exact same message boards. He had illegal contact with players during the off-season. SEM has got way more than 1 transfer during his time at SEM. I have also heard the rumors about steroids but I don't believe that anyone would be so desperate to win a football game that he'd give a kid illegal drugs.

Those are the issues that I have heard about.
I know Urias is well liked by players and parents at SEM, but he got a scholarship to Temple & never got a degree. Urias is an excellent example of how an education will take you farther than football. If he'd got a degree he'd be a head coach right now. Urias is a good coach that made some bad choices. He'll land on his feet next season probably at Compton JC. He'll be fine and so will the Eagles so isn't it time to move on? I will start, I am done with this topic.

I wasn't going to put anything on this board, but once I saw a comment about Jerry's family being brought up and lies about him selling "substances" that pissed me off, but also made me laugh at how rediculous some people can be. I do understand how some people can think, "Why are people making a big deal about an assistant coach?" Those who know Jerry know that he isn't just a coach, and if anyone would have gone to watch one of SEM practices or games, he or she wouldn't think he was an assistant. Jerry is much more than a coach, he does so much for these kids on and off the field. Any player coached by him would agree that he has impacted their life in a very positive way, by pushing them to work hard and proving to them that their hard work does pay off whether its by helping them get faster, stronger, or getting their teqhnique done right, or having them compete for a championship.

Those accusations of him recruiting kids are completly false, he may have been a reason why a player would want to go to SEM, to play for him, but he never crossed that line and recruited or asked in any way for anyone to go to SEM. And another reason was for him cussing, wow, if thats such an issue I'm pretty sure every coach in the country would be out of a job. I think it has to do more with maybe that the principal thinks that the kids listen to him more than they listen to her. Whatever her reasons they're more tan likely unjustifiable.

Anyone that knows Jerry pretty well knows me. He began coaching me in high school and has continued to do so even now that I'm in college. He has helped me and many friends of mine and others to get a scholarship and continue playing after high school not only by training us, but by taking us to camps, talking to college coaches for us, and by helping us put highlight tapes together to send to schools. I'm honored to know him and to have been coached by him, because if it wasn't for him I wouldn't be getting a free education and also I don't know if I would still be playing right now.

Alright well this is getting pretty long if anyone read this whole thing thanks and I hope you have gained some or more respect for Jerry. And know this, not being able to coach @ SEM isn't going to kill him, he already has plenty of offers to coach at other schools. And being let go won't stop him from continuing to help out those kids at South either, they will still go to him for any advice they may need or for training, and he will still gladly help them.

I got coach by Urias, he was one of the best coaches that i met as a friend and coach.He never sold substances to anyone when i was there people just like to talk crap.Dont matter who ran the program if it was coach williams who ever ran the program dont matter We as players had fun..To Joel Sanches And to the coach form Mt.View did vote south el monte players last. what ever you have against the coaches dont take it out on the kids. Out coach them make your kids better beat them on the field not on the ballots you sorry asses.

I am hearing the same rumblings that some of our Amat boys will abandon ship and go toward LA and SH for more playing time. Well that goes without saying some parents are never happy with their kids playng time. Amat is a tuff nut to crack. Politics and talent is a tough hurdle for some. Everyone has choices to make and good luck to the ones that leave. The upside for Amat faithful is we have some good talent coming up from JV and Fresh. and it will only be a few that leave but we remain strong and play with what we have plus we will be getting rid of those malcontent parents and all their BS. No kidding, I've heard a few things myself. About 2/3 or so of these rumors end up being BS, but there is some serious rumbling that they might get more than just Amat castoffs next year.

There is a controversy but the full story will never be told unless Principal Montero talks. And she won't because she has class and has chosen to protect Urias. There are other people who know too but they won't go on record and speak. That story Aram wrote was a joke because it was all based on Urias's side, which was all based on lies. This guy has a laundry list of CIF indiscretions that will probably never come out. Let's just say Montero was tired of being embarrassed and put an end ot it so it wouldn't continue. SEM is better off.

I was pissed when I 1st heard that had happened, and other schools knew about it and expressed their concerns, but that's where it died out. Something Urias said should be of a lot more concern than an assistant coach losing his job. He said that one team voted players Last on all-league ballots. If that is true, the coaching staff of that team that did that should be given all the respect of pedophiles. It is certainly child abuse to allow kids from another school to be punished for petty rivalries. Where is the character and maturity that sports are supposed to develop?

Good to see all the Arroyo guys supporting other MVL teams. But let's go back to the comments and the news-paper article, the part that involves the EL Monte staff. I did hear about the problems with the Lions HC and his chicken-shit ways to take things out on the kids (from South). It's all about jeolousy and not being able to accomplish things on your own, this Joel Sanchez character played with Urias and wasn't even close to being the type of player Urias was. I had the chance to see them both play, and Urias was head and shoulders above him, and now he's ten times the coach he is. I think Urias did the right thing to avoid confrontation and showed him it was meaningless. Sanchez needs to quit acting like a baby and concentrate on his team, help your kids get better and improve your program, don't worry about anything else. He shouldn't even get a vote until he get's EL Monte out of the bottom of the celler. That way teams will quit scheduling you for their homecoming game.

If you know football you should know that it takes talent on the field to win ball games. Jerry is a fine coach no dought, but with the talent that south had in 2005, most coaches would had made a run. so did rosmead, an arroyo, the record stands for itself. now lets look at 2006 WHAT HAPPEN MR. KNOW FOOTBALL. SUDDENLY MVL, WIN RECORD WENT SOUTH WHY BECAUSE WE LOST ALL TALENT, it will take a couple of years to build up again. especially south el monte because student enrollment is so low,about 1,200 students. SO LETS GIVE CREDIT, TO ALL OUR HEAD COACHES, AND ASST.AND ESPECIALLY OUR PLAYERS BECAUSE THERE THE ONE THAT MAKE IT ALL HAPPEN. GO EAGLES. GO MVL.

A head coach is responsible for his staff. So even if Urias did the play calling it was Escamilla who led the team. Schurr High won CIF because Coach Dick allowed Joey Jordan to call plays from up in the booth. Jordan is a mastermind when it comes to offensive plays, but Coach Dick kept the team focused on their task at hand.

This guys Urias was a one man show at El Monte and All Conference at PCC, got himself a scholarship to play in the Big East at Temple and was invited to camp by the San Francisco Forty Niners, played professionally in Canada. Where do you get living through his newphew from all of that ?

From what I know Eric Escamilla is a really good guy, I was just saying that Urias made all of their success possible and put them over the hump. I know this is a bad situation for both guys, from what I hear they got along great and work together well. My take is the Urias is a better candidate for HC and knows how to get the best out of his kids, at the same he looks out for them and the players love him.

Wow, how many of you people actually know this man? Yet you seat there anonymously spreading rumors without knowing the facts. For those that do know him, know that hes made alot of sacrifices in his life not only for his nephew but for the entire SEM football program. Coach Urias has accomplished so much and touched so many of these kids lifes, it really doesn't matter what any of you say. The opinions that really matter are the kids who's lives hes touched. As far as I'm concern that school was lucky to have him for that long. I'm sure he will move on to bigger and better things.

hmm ... by arroyo, what are the good donut places I know of? I can't think of any. I know I've been to that one right by the Mobil on Lower Azusa and Santa Anita, but I don't think it was anything special. There is a decent spot down Santa Anita on Garvey. I tend to associate Arroyo with Alfredo's (Alberto's when I first started going there).

Hey 42 when Urias was that freshmen coach at SEM didn't they lose to Arroyo's frosh team (it was an awesome game btw!) & then lose to Rosemead the very next week? I thought they did, but either way those three teams AHS, SEM & RHS were loaded at that level.
You can't say SEM would be nothing if it weren't for Urias & follow it by saying that he was the reason for the improvement they've made... and it not be a knock on Escamilla. A head coach doesn't necessarily have to call plays, but he does have to lead. It is hard to be a leader when you leave your team for 1-2 summers to get your Master's & you turn control of the team over to a walk-on assistant coach. Escamilla is a really good guy, but the knock on Escamilla is that he isn't a leader. Leaders don't give up control of their program. From what you and other SEM fans have said, that has been the case. As for Urias, I think worst case he broke rules and got caught. Best case he probably made some questionable decisions. That probably means the truth is somewhere between.

First, I want to agree that THE SCOUT is this blog's equivalent of a village idiot, his posts are wrong on soo many levels.. I think that Arroyo 42 did a great job of setting the record, and THE SCOUT, straight.. but I am not convinced that ARROYO would want a guy who doesnt shake hands with coaches from his own alma mater of all schools..and Urias confessed to that because of some voting situations...? Thats not very sportsmanlike, is it? But then again, I know from first-hand observations that south el monte high has been known to have the least sportsmanlike teams in the MVL..especially in football. and they can hang that next to their tri-champ banner if they want...
In other knight knews, the boys basketball team at ARROYO is projected to win the MVL this year. If they do, with the help of first year head coach Lydell McCullough, it will be the first since 1998. Also, the Lady Knights will attempt to defend another girls basketball championship and the heavily competed for throne on top of the MVL this year. Long time Lady Knight head coach Mike Gorball is very popular and loved on the north el monte campus. Show your support as they travel to arch-rival rosemead on friday the 12th of January. GO KNIGHTS GO!

As one of the people that know football I can tell you that without Jerry Urias (NOTHING) would have been accomplished at South El Monte, this is not a nock on Escamilla. It's that Urias is a great coach. The run they have made in the last few years is because of Urias, remember he coached their Freshmen team to a one lost season while the varsity did nothing. Once he moved up then we started to see the turn-around. Like I said before I hope they do well and keep it up, I like to see the MVL do well, no matter which school it is. Oh, OK, maybe not Rosemead, by the way I like your comment on the 10-0 start.

Careful rosemead. lets see , um" remember the play nobody season 10-0, and can you please remind us what happen on the first round cif playoff, OH could be that you lost to a third place team, no, really. and lets see despite south worst game of the season six fumbles, and leaque star quaterback lee, hurt and out for the game. I will have a column of sorts to run tomorrow about the Urias situation. I think it's very interesting on a multitude of levels. And I think it's going to have some further consequences. These are very interesting times in the MVL. Believe me when I tell you, this is going to be one of the most important off-seasons in quite some time in the MVL.

I think the issues Urias had were mostly with EM. I do think your right about Cogburn not having as good a year if he played at Arroyo. The system they used was perfect for him. You also said, "Mares & Cogburn helped AHS win plenty of games?" Maybe you are thinking of different players? They played on 2 of the worst Arroyo teams in the past 20 years in 2000 & 2001. They did win one league championship (2002) & got to the 1/4 finals. Mares & Cogburn were great players on 2 bad teams. You also said hat, "Arroyo
hasn't done much since MacKinnon left?" They have won 3 MVL championships in 4 years. Just go buy a program everything is right there in black and white. I know they have more wins, titles & CIF wins the past 4 years than in MacKinnon's last 4 years. Your wrong on that one, but I do agree with you that Escamilla was smart to step down & let Urias call the offense. But is anyone saying Urias got fired for being a bad coach? I'd be really careful about throwing out comments about a guys family, though. What the heck does Urias' family have to do with him deserving to be fired? As for RHS always winning league, etc. Haven't you guys lost 4 out of the last 5 games to Arroyo? You guys are good and will stay that way as long as Koffler stays as Head Coach. One more thing, it's funny that every transfer you mentioned was under MacKinnon. Are you accusing him of recruiting?

Guess that Head Coaching job you were talking about just took a hit, huh? A walk-on coach that got fired from a MVL school! That won't look to good on his next resume & it probably killed him to be a head coach in that league.

Let's hear some of the so called circumstances.
Help me understand how a coach that puts' in time and effort to help the youth in El Monte (regardless of what school they attend) can be called out as controversial and fired, if we are talking about Tommy Cogburn then you need to ask his parents why they wanted him to go to South El Monte and not Arroyo. Believe me, I would have loved to see him as a Knight, but I respect his parents decision to do what's best for the kid. Well, anyway you look at this, it doesn't make any sense and leave it up to South El Monte to mess up a good thing. I hope you enjoyed the two consecutive victories over ARROYO, it had been 10 years and it's going to be ten more before you see another one. GO KNIGHTS GO.

All this talk about coaches leaving reminded me of a joke.

At A booster club meeting the coach explains that he must move on to a larger school that will pay him more. There is a hush within the booster club. No one wants him to leave.

If he was just a walk on coach, how did he get fired? Does anyone know why? Or what the circumstances were?

I agree with Cj Cano's dad about what a shame this is, I keep reading things like controversial, if that means not turning kids away when they ask for help then we should all be controversial. Let me also correct you on the comment that he WAS considered one of the top assistants, he's much more than that. He really has been the Head Coach at South El Monte and they need to be thankful to him for everything he did for their program and the kids at that school, without any support from the administration. He is one of the best coaches period. It's funny how much the Principal loved him during their playoffs run, how everything was peechy and non-controversial. He has taken the time to guide their player in the right direction, I know that's the only help some of them have had from anyone at that school. The South El Monte administration is a JOKE. That double digit midget that calls herself the Principal better get more involve with the students welfare and realized that athletics is a huge part of their everyday life, and the discipline and impact that will have in their future.
From what I am hearing around town from the parents, they are angry about what's going on and some of the players are talking about not playing. I would think any school would love to have someone with the experience and knowgledge he brings to the table, along with the drive to help kids get better on and off the field. Take a look at that website and see how many kids he has helped and ask around to see how many more he is helping now, then expalin to me how this can happen. What a JOKE.

after years of trying to get the right coaches for sucess, coach escamilla finds himself trying to find coaches for the 2007season. I guess winning is not top prioirty with the head honcho, at south. Finally after years of dissapointed seasons. the fans , parents,and community, found something to be proud of and full of pride to be part of SØUTH EL MONTE. JUST LOOK AT THE CROWDS AND FANS , PARENTS ON FRIDAY NITES, I hope that coach escamilla can continue sucess. and lets continue to support him and his staff.

It's a shame they fired him. Jerry has a lot to offer to any school. Jerry has a speed training camp during the offseason and summer. It definitely helped my son improve his speed.
